Sen. Brown calls for extending help to workers hurt by trade

U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, on Tuesday renewed his call for a long-term extension of Trade Adjustment Assistance, the program that provides retraining, unemployment benefits and other help to workers who have lost their jobs due to foreign trade.

The program expires on Saturday, Brown said. In Ohio, an estimated 32,389 workers have been certified for TAFF assistance from May 2009 to Jan. 31, 2011, second only to the 46,800 certified in Michigan.

“If Congress fails to step in, the TAA program in its entirety will expire on Saturday,” Brown said in a press release.

“I’ve seen first hand how TAA can help Ohioans get back on their feet, which is why I am urging Congress to pass a long-term extension of this vital program this week.”

The 18-month extension called for by Brown would cost $1 billion, covered by customs user fees, Brown’s office said.

An earlier study by Policy Matters Ohio, a Cleveland-based research organization, found that from May 18, 2009 to May 17, 2010, Ohio had 208 groups of workers certified for TAA, covering an estimated 26,427 workers, including 2,512 in the Dayton area.

The issue isn’t with the accuracy of the numbers. They got those statistics from the Department of Labor and the ODJFS—They are part of the public domain. Policy Matters Ohio didn’t do any “study” or “research” in “finding” those numbers other than clicking on a government website—Something that Mr. Hershey could have easily done. My issue is with the “reporter” who claimed Policy Matters Ohio did a study to “find” those figures. That is not the case at all. Nor did he appropriately identify them—They are a Liberal group. If Policy Matters Ohio really wanted to do research they should explain why only 55% (national avg is 58%) of those workers certified in Ohio for TAA training re-entered the workforce and job retention is only 79% compared the the national avg. of 85%.

Mike - the citation says that Policy Matters found that from May 2009 to May 2010, Ohio had 208 groups of workers certified for TAA, covering an estimated 26,427 workers, including 2,512 in the Dayton area. Are you saying that’s not accurate?

An “honest” journalist? They don’t exist any longer. They’re just propagandists doing what they do best - lying.

William, if you’re going to be a journalist at least be an honest one. Policy Matters Ohio is a LIBERAL organization that throws its support only behind left-wing ideologues, like Senator Brown. William, go to their own web site and look who they partner with—Apollo Alliance (a leftist group funded by George Soros), Economic Policy Institute (a self-proclaimed “progressive group), and DEMOS (a group formed by their own admission to “create a counter balance to right-wing think tanks) which included then Senator Obama as one if its founding members.
