Kasich: ‘Dayton is going to be great again’
By Christopher Magan and Margo Rutledge Kissell Staff Writers
UPDATED AT 1:34 P.M.: In his first State of the State address Republican Gov. John Kasich went city by city, noting Ohio’s assets including Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, where he said there were untold research and other opportunities.
He called for an “enterprise zone” outside the base’s gates. “Dayton is going to be great again,” Kasich said.
Kasich outlined the state’s economic woes. He said the state’s “best and brightest” were going other places to realize their dreams. Ohio is “under siege” by other states and countries that are luring away the state’s jobs and “job creators.
We cannot afford to let that continue,” Kasich said. The state needs to be innovative to control costs and attract jobs for the future. We are putting a budget together to transform our state,” he said. “You ain’t seen nothing yet. We are going to transform this state.”
The governor thanked the legislature for passage of JobsOhio, a public-private partnership aimed at reenergizing the state’s economic development efforts that he called one of his most important initiatives.
“We’ve got to have people who can talk the talk,” he said.
Kasich said he wants to get the state back to a “growth agenda.” He foreshadowed his budget to be released next week, saying it will include “restructuring” of government to provide better services at a lower cost. The governor highlighted proposals coming to reform nursing home care, prison sentencing, mental health and Medicaid and schools.
“More dollars in the classroom will instead of bureaucracy will improve our schools,” Kasich said. “We are going to have a significant reform agenda.”
Kasich spoke passionately about education. He said he will screen the documentary “Waiting for Superman,” which is critical of the U.S. troubled education system in Columbus. “It will get you angry, it will get you frustrated, it will make you cry and get you to stand up for our kids when you have an opportunity,” Kasich said. “We better commit ourselves to this and get this fixed.”
Kasich said he was committed to battling prescription drug addiction in the state. “The cavalry has arrived,” he said. “The legislature will not let you stand alone.”
This is the first time in recent memory that an Ohio governor’s State of the State speech has been targeted by accompanying protests. Kasich has supported a host of bold ideas for fixing the state’s economy — including restricting union bargaining rights for 350,000 police officers, firefighters, teachers, nurses and other public sector workers. When he mentioned his support for Senate Bill 5 Kasich was booed by people in the chamber.
Democrats and labor groups are rallying outside the Statehouse throughout Kasich’s speech which started at noon. Hundreds of opponents of a collective bargaining bill marched down the sidewalks toward a Statehouse lawn an hour before the speech, with some chanting “kill the bill” and wearing firefighter and police uniforms.
Earlier, about 30 members of tea party groups gathered nearby to show support for the legislation and for Kasich and lawmakers who support it. Tuesday marked the fourth week of protests surrounding the bill, due to come before a House committee later in the day.
The Associated Press contributed to this report.

The American labor union has help raised the standard of living for the public. What would minimum wage be;if not for unions. If Gov. Karish is so concern about the budget, why doesn’t he cut his salary to the level of the state workers;he’s one of them. Also the state Congress and donate it to the budget.

Kasich - Kasich!! Registered voters should have gone out before he was elected into office. Republicans are not for the poor. Police, Fire Fighters, Teachers, and Public Employees serve the public. What is Kasich (formerly of Wall Street)doing. Hurting the public.

The tea drinkers have shaken up the status quo with the “tax-n-spend” Democrats and the Reagen-Bush-Bush “deadbeat Republicans”. The Gov’s reference to medicaid and nursing home reform looks interesting. I suggest that before families make their parents wards of the state the estate should be examined for history of transfers. If transfer was made at below market rates the beneficiary should be responsible for the direct care of the parents. That may make the old folks and the greedy kids think twice before making the early transfer. When my grandmother moved into our home at age 90+ she told my mother that she changed her diaper when she was a baby and now my mother could change her’s. That my mother did for the next six years. Welcome to the real world.

What are all these people who don’t like Dayton doing wasting their time making comments about how terrible Dayton is, and how bad they want to get out of Ohio? To those who profess to want to leave so bad - let me give you some advice that will expedite your leaving Ohio - stop wasting your time making comments on the internet about Ohio and use that time and energy to look for a job and housing in another state, pack your stuff and get out. The rest of us will be better off without you. Thanks!

an interview with Fox News’ Megyn Kelly moments ago, State Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald (R-WI), one of Walker’s closest allies in the legislature, confirmed the true political motive of Walker’s anti-union push. Fitzgerald explained that “this battle” is about eliminating unions so that “the money is not there” for the labor movement. Specifically, he said that the destruction of unions will make it “much more difficult” for President Obama to win reelection in Wisconsin: FITZGERALD: Well if they flip the state senate, which is obviously their goal with eight recalls going on right now, they can take control of the labor unions. If we win this battle, and the money is not there under the auspices of the unions, certainly what you’re going to find is President Obama is going to have a much difficult, much more difficult time getting elected and winning the state of Wisconsin.

Kasich has turned Republican conservative teachers, those who voted for him, into Democrats. Probably the same with firefighters and police officers. I really want to address his plan to incorporate merit pay into SB5…If I am a doctor and advise a patient not to eat junk food, and to exercise, if that patient dies from blocked arteries because they didn’t follow my instructions, I get paid the same. If I am a lawyer and I represent my client and tell them to keep their mouth shut and they don’t and then I lose the case, I get paid the same. But if I teach my students and tell them to study, yet they don;t and end up failing the OGT, then I lose money based upon merit. Really? And if a firefighter saves a life do they get a raise, but if someone dies on their watch they don’t get a raise? Or if the cop catches a criminal she gets a raise, but if they get away they don’t? DEFINE MERIT KASICH!

FDR? hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha. His BS started the meltdown and entitlement mentality that permeates todays society. FDR sucked..JFK once said “Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.” Today, thanks to the entitlement mentality, it has been changed to “Ask not what I can do for my country, what is the country going to give me?” Thsi country was founded on teh principles of hard work. Now, it is sucking off of others hard work..

The modern neocon movement is a remarkable coalition: Rich swindlers who have convinced ignorant working poor to participate in a massive redistribution of the nation’s wealth. And then they get their idiotic puppets to scream in anguish at any hint of modest change in this momentum. Kasich is merely riding the coattails of this phenomena…voted into office by the likes of those demonstators who carried signs last year saying: Keep government out of my medicare. Total ignorant morons who don’t even understand the adult conversation going on around them, but still vote nontheless. No matter that the past 30 years show that everyone, rich and poor, prospered after both Reagan and Clinton raised taxes modestly. And no matter that the country tanked after Bush lavished tax cuts on the rich. Just keep up the momentum of soaking the rich while police, fire, education and infrastructure services go down the drain. This country is doomed to despair. And then it will take another historical icon like FDR to fix it once again, if we’re lucky enough to find one.

Among the reasons people leave the state is the weather, and the state is not amenable to new ideas and new ways of doing things. There are no new ideas in Kasich agenda. Dayton nor any other city will be great again. We are in a new era but the old folks with thier dogma refuse to see that. Your not going to get the best and brightest to teach here if they are going to be hounded and degraded because they want to earn a living. How are we going to attract public safety jobs? Why would anyone come to Ohio if no one can read or write and everyone over 60 and broke? Sadly Kasich is not the only one who does not understand, but the citizens of Ohio.

@Patrick-I just looked up the salaries @buckeye institute because I was wondering about the triple digit salaries because $73000 is the highest teacher pay in our district. I would love to see Kasich take the same cuts as the cuts he is asking the state workers to take. It upsets me that his cabinet got $20k to $40k salary increases while he cut his administrative assistants from $34k to $24k. Only shows his agenda is to make the middle and poor classes poorer for the sake of a few who get quite significant increases in salary. What a hypocritical leader we have in Kasich. He surely isn’t walking the walk but thinks we are STUPID! Sorry, but I can’t follow a person of this caliber. He is shallow and only has him and his friends interests at heart. Think about this when we you are voting on SB5 and all his other ideas.

When we have teachers getting 6K or more a month in pensions, and making six figure pay packages for doing little more these days than baby sitting as public education goes down the drain, it’s way past time for REAL change. If you doubt these figures, go to buckeyeinstitute.gov and see this horror show for yourself. Then consider these folks work only 2/3 the hours the rest of us do.

never did I think I would see the day that teachers are so demoralized. there was a time when teachers were looked up to. Sure there are a few bad ones, but doesnt every occupation have some that need to be weeded out? we pay taxes too, we don’t get to collect social security. we pay into the pension that we earn. I am so downhearted that we are being blamed for all the economic problems. WHERE ARE THE PARENTS and what about their responsibility to prepare their children for school? why are children coming to school at 5 not knowing colors, counting, etc.? Every single one of you came through a classroom. Can you not think of one single teacher that made a difference in your life? One teacher that makes you realize how hard of a job it is? We are not asking for much. Why am I starting to regret telling people I am a teacher when they ask? this is so sad. when did this happen… It is NOT the teachers fault

We need reform in this state, starting with restricting collective bargaining rights and firing public employees who strike. Next would be changing the state tax code to eliminate state income tax and change it to state sales tax. Then all the libs can pitch in and start paying. Next would be to eliminate any state entitlements. We would then send our bums to other states, possibly Illinois. We would get other states best and brightest, who want to pay less taxes. Problem solved. Oh yeah, introduce teachers to the 401k plan that the rest of us enjoy. hahahaha

Pig, The reason there are no people working on the I-75 projects is this climate phenomena called “Winter.” The projects have been dormant for a few months - not a year. There have been days when work was possible, but it’s inefficient and costly to start and stop the work over and over again as conditions change. Also, the traffic flow got better when they started construction - not worse.

Highways provide for travel to the casual, vacationer, business and commercial drivers. The highway system in Ohio provides travel for hundreds of thousands of drivers PER DAY. The best estimate is that trains would benefit 50,000 travelers per YEAR. Clearly an abatross for the state. Kasich was correct in “de-railing” it.

Paul, if you are so concerned about taxes , then you would support a passenger train system over a highway system. Passenger trains cost alot less to build and maintain. Highways cost billions each year , and with gas prices rising they are going to become less unsubstainble to support. Ohio had better get a 21st century transportation view if it wants to compete for jobs and attracting busines to this state!

Karon, I’m assuming by Jobs created with train infrastructure you’re referring to More Public Employee jobs..FORGET ABOUT IT If Ohio can figure out how to do passenger trains through private sector, I’m fine with it. But the truth is, if it was a good idea the private sector probably would have jumped on it years ago. Rail travel is Not cheap and we certainly can’t afford the State of Ohio to “subsidize” it either. Subsidize = higher taxes

I still see all this road construction from the RIA. Why aren’t there people working at these sites getting this done? I-75 is a nightmare. Finish one stretch before you move to another and leave it for a year. Jobs….yeah they could hire a few hundred more and get this done. Traffic will flow and maybe businesses will move in???

The billionares Koch brothers know that passenger trains for this country will be a threat to their billion dollar fortune. Koch brothers supported Kasich , Scott Walker and Rick Scott campaigns, all these states that these men won, trashed to passenger trains for their state!

Buses are not attracted to ride compared to a powerful infrastructure of passenger trains! Building Ohio infrastructure of passenger train, creates thousands of new jobs that are high paying and cannot be outsourced!

Karon, please tell me exactly what you think you are going to get out of a train system that you can’t get out of adding a few new Greyhound bus stations? The answer is pretty much nothing other than a big construction bill and a few government paid jobs.

Skeptic, that is why passenger trains are important to maintain Ohio cities and make them productive! When you have people traveling through the Ohio cities, this creates a whole new economy for the cities and makes the suburbs stronger!

If he sets up a zone outside the Base, what does that do to help DAYTON? Most of the defense contractors are already in the suburbs anyway. If we can continue the positive momentum Downtown, the whole region will be better off. Check out all the new buildings by the Dragons’ stadium - looking good!

Very passionate speech by Kasich! I think Ohio is LUCKY to have Kasich, he clearly “gets” what it takes to attract business to Ohio. Kasich is a problem solver and he’s the type of leader who WILL make the hard decisions. He’s got a lot of horsepower. He’s going to spend our taxdollars WISELY. I like what I hear!

Kasich killed the passenger train jobs , those jobs would have created thousand of new jobs for Ohio and would have given Ohioians an alternative type of transportation! Senior citizens , college students , business travelers ,tourist and those just wanting to go from a to b to c without car dependence would have all enjoyed the trains!
