Referendum ready to go
Labor leaders looking to repeal the new collective bargaining law got the go-ahead from Attorney General Mike DeWine and Secretary of State Jon Husted on Friday.
DeWine certified the wording used to summarize Senate Bill 5 for the referendum petition and Husted certified that We Are Ohio, the group seeking to block the law, collected the 1,000 valid signatures from voters needed to kick off the effort.
We Are Ohio now must collect 231,147 valid signatures from registered Ohio voters by June 30 in put Senate Bill 5 before the voters in November.
Senate Bill 5 guts collective bargaining rights for nearly 360,000 prison guards, police officers, firefighters, teachers and other public employees statewide. It bans strikes by public workers, institutes a merit pay system, and limits unions to bargaining on wages, terms and conditions. It also requires workers to pay at least 15 percent of their health care costs and in some cases pay more toward their pensions. It blocks unions from collecting ‘fair share’ fees from workers who don’t want to join the union.
Republican lawmakers and Gov. John Kasich say the changes are needed to give local governments the tools needed to manage their budgets in the face of dwindling resources. Kasich’s two-year budget, now pending in the Ohio House, calls for deep cuts to schools and local governments.
Opponents say it is an unnecessary attack on workers and unions who are willing to negotiate concessions at the bargaining table. They note that some provisions, such as blocking fair share fees, are designed to weaken union power, not save government money.

I have had mixed feelings on SB5. I am still not sure how I will go when it comes to a vote. But it seems like it is the exact same thing as the health care bill/law. Good points and bad but cobbled together quickly while they had a majority vote. As a result there will be unintended consequences. Reps say you cant trust big govt. on health but you can trust big govt. to determine your salary and benefits. Incompetent teachers? Who hires them? If a team isn’t performing you fire the coach not the players. If a teacher isn’t performing and needs to be fired, why isn’t the principal and supt. held accountable. A tenured teacher may be fired for cause. All it takes is a principal to get out of his office and do a proper evaluation. Pay based on performance. Is it fair to judge a teacher with college prep students the same as a teacher with students who do not wish to be in school, never study and are simply wasting time. Yes there are a lot of things that need changing and restructuring. But teachers generally get less pay than their counterparts in the private sector. You get well qualified people who are willing to work for less because they look to a time when they do get a good retirement benefit. This bill should be reworked to prevent it from causing unintended consequences. When many good teachers quit, it will cost much more to get good people when they start to think that they will have to work for less and have less when they do retire.

public employees should not be bargaining with politicians who want their votes. nor should an unelected, unaccountable arbitrator be able to make decisions that force citizens to pay more taxes.

Monster, You should be embarrassed, and I am not being sarcastic. I’m growing very tired of hearing teachers whine about the sacrifices they make, and upset by what you feel is a lack of respect for your profession. Until a teacher like you actually takes responsibility for the real long term results of your policies and efforts, you just might be on the road to recover your lost respect. You have done it to yourselves by embracing and following the democratic and union machine without question. You complain about students and parents, but take no responsibility for the system you allowed and took and active part in creating. You are the ones who feel you have the responsibility to feed kids, teach them your version of sexual behavior (bypassing the parents), teaching your liberal political beliefs. Potential police officers in this city can’t pass a basic civil service test. I deal with young people daily, and its appalling how illiterate a good percentage of area of high school graduates actually are. You state that you have been in a position of authority, how did you address student problems? Zero tolerance policies? Is that about the students or about covering your butt? Is that what we get from an administrator with a masters degree? Are today’s kids so difficult to handle, that you have to put them all on Ritalin? Again is that how adminstrators with Masters degrees handle problem students? How many reported sexual instances occur in this state by teachers? Yes Monster, you have a reason to be embarrassed. Watching the behavior of teachers in Wis. and Columbus and the ones who post on these blogs, I have lost respect for you. The policies you helped create and embraced have a direct effect on your results. I’ve yet to see a teacher whose doesn’t cry about the predictament they now find themselves. I will never ever vote for another levy (always did in the past), I will be a active vocal opponent.

I have taught 33 years. I feel good and noble about what I do. I am not getting rich. Others with my education (2masters)didn’t start out at 8300 a yr. I pay union dues and have been the president. We didn’t rob anyone and I did not get rich as president. We pay 15% med, didn’t take raises, negotiated in a positive way with administration. I guess this was the WRONG thing to do? Sorry we EDUCATORS have damaged your children and our economy so badly. (I hope you hear the sarcasm). P.S. I WAS a republican; now I am just embarrassed.

Listen to Union Leader Trumka and his violent language. “We know where you live!” Listen to Union Leader Lerner, caught on tape exposing union plans to sabotage our banks and stockmarkets by asking their followers to not pay their mortgages and cause the banks to fail. This is how the unions plan to stay in business, by creating chaos. Their days of rage around the world “Workers of the World Unite!”—it’s not a coincidence that we are seeing this all at the same time around the world and here in the states. The progressives, this administration, and the unions are using every trick they can find to get more power and hold on to the power they have now. They are not too proud to be involved in criminal activity, and they have proven this to us. The main stream media has ignored this agenda and refuse to report on any adverse news that goes against this political agenda. They are attacking the youngest, the oldest, the weakest Americans and they have no guilt about it. Their hc bill is just another redistribution power grab. Obama’s bombing of Libya on UN’s R2P (Responsibility to Protect) orders and his constant attacks on Israel (as she tries to protect herself against the Palestinians) tell me that Obama does not think of Israel as our ally anymore. If you go to sleep now, you will wake up as Obama bombs Israel on UN’s R2P order. It’s coming. Code Pink is teaming up with Radical Islams to attack Israel and make her defend herself coming in May. UN is ready to attack Israel once that happens based on a retracted report that originally falsely claimed that Israel targeted Palestinian civilians, when Israel didn’t. Even though that report was retracted, UN won’t accept the retracted report and still eyes Israel as their next target. Time for America to withdraw from the UN and stop supporting their agenda to attack all free nations and ignore the torture of the communist nations.

The bill actually didn’t go far ENOUGH. Look at all the recent police officers busted doing things against the rules of employement who have been busted several times in the past and KEPT their jobs because the UNIONS demanded it. I wonder if any of those who SUPPORT the repeal of it would change thier minds if they had to deal with one of the officers who would lie to get them convicted or is just too lazy to do the job right. A good example is a freind of mine robbed at gun point last week. He managed to follow them and get the police there but the woman who robbed him claimed he had tried to steal pills from her. Now she had no CCW or right to even HAVE the gun there and he had witnesses as well as the video that would have shown it from the ATM. The DPD officer just said he could either drop it or they would ALL be arrested and no he wouldn’t go talk to the witnesses since they were on the other side of town by then. Instead he would just arrest everyone and let a detective deal with it in a few days when they could get around to it. Yup, that is a well paid public worker protecting your safety. Of course he could have gone ahead and pressed the charges, missed a couple of days of work and lost out on more than she was robbed of at the ATM. Same with my trying to report my ex-wife violating a protective order. It took 5 tries to even get someone to take a report over a week long period of time and then it turned out the county had LOST the order. They said I would have to produce the copy showing they had been served with it but they KNOW the only copy showing that is the one THEY have, you just get a copy showing you actually HAVE and order but it can’t be enforced unless it shows they have been served with it. These are the people the unions protect and ensure have a job. Meanwhile the res of us are supposed to pay more taxes for them while we are struggling.

Americans want their children to learn the basics like math, reading, proper English. Instead, we find our children can’t read but our being indoctrinated against Christian and Jewish principles and for socialism and hating America and believing in lies about America and capitalism. We can provide our children with a better education of the basics without funding indoctrination of socialism. We need to starve the socialism and get rid of the teachers who can’t teach the basics. Education in America has not improved since the creation of the Department of Education. I say get rid of it.

I see that DDN left up all of the commenters that attacked me, yet I could not find even one of my posts remaining here. I think DDN believes I don’t have a right to express my opinions because they expose Obama and his administration’s agenda. I believe in God, and I believe that if our nation will turn to God and ask for His forgiveness, he will heal our land. But until then, I believe he has allowed progressives to believe lies because they didn’t want to know the truth. I do believe that people like Obama are posers and pretend to be followers of Christ when they, in truth, don’t know Him, never met Him, and in fact are working against God’s people. Example of UN’s R2P (Resposibility to Protect) from S. Power, wife of our regulatory czar, Cass Sustein and her apparent connection to Obama and the bombing of Libya without Congressional approval, without Libya being an imminent threat to America, and without Libya attacking America. I call for Obama’s impeachment. You can stick your foil hats where the sun doesn’t shine. Progressives have had to go in hiding after President Wilson and President FDR’s reigns of terror, and here they are again threatening us with blood in the streets, days of rage, union thugs beating up senior citizens at town hall meetings, and raiding our medicare and SS funds and redistributing it to their “green” projects. It’s time to stop Obama from sending our tax dollars to foreign countries like Brazil for drilling and jobs there. AG Holder blames Americans for being prejudiced and Obama’s anti-colonial hatred towards Americans can be blamed for redistributing our money out of country. Progressives were voted out last November’s election, and we will get rid of the rest of them next election. No shuttle for Dayton? Why are we not surprised by this?? Obama Politics is use them until they are used up, and then discard them. Just like Obama discarded Rev Wright who gave him “collective salvation”—what a bunch of crap! Congress needs to impeach Obama from bombing Libya w/o approval, and to keep him from bombing Israel who is next on UN’s R2P list. In May, the left wing radicals (Code Pink for one—supported by George Soros’ money) join with the Radical Islams to attack Israel and cause her to defend herself again, and UN will say they are targeting civilians again (the original report was recalled by the writer who said he provided inaccurate details and that Israel wasn’t targeting civilians—but UN won’t accept the refuted report, only the one where it said Israel was targeting Palestinian civilians). One world order, one world money system, Obama, Code Pink, George Soros, Cass Sustein, S. Power. Yahoo search: Bill Ayer, The Weather Underground, Undercover report to find out Obama’s plans for 25 million Americans and death camps.

Rather than fight the unions, do not elect or support the people who are bad negotiators. Who got the holidays for you? Not the company. Who allowed the great wages and benefit packages. The company. The union and company negotiated, the unions seemed to have done the best so far. Should could there be some adjustment in some sectors, yes there should be. We have Republican governors attacking the middle class on every issue. Nationally, the Republicans want to end Medicare and Medicaid, while giving more tax breaks to the millionaires and billionaires. We have corporations like GE and Exxon that pay no taxes, while the Republicans refuse to stop oil and Agriculture subsidies to corporations that make billions in profits. The republicans are also trying to dodge all environmental regulations and safety concerns at the state level to allow companies like Massey Energy(coal mine disaster) and BP to operate unchecked. The Republican ideology is fast becoming criminal.

If there was ever any question about the ignorance of those that claim to be right wingers, republicans or conservatives or you wonder why Ohio is in the mess its in, just read their posts and it will come crystal clear. These people are low information ideologs that regurgitate the spin, lies and misinformation spoon fed to them via faux noise, druggie limpbaugh or any other bought and paid for GOP liars. They do this to support their failed and corrupt ideology just like the media sources they follow and the poor excuses for leaders they chose. They dont care about the budget, they dont care about workers or workers rights, they dont care who gets screwed just as long as their poltical ideology is in place. Its ok to spend us into a hole in the ground, its ok to be as corrupt as you can get away with, its ok to take away rights just as long as its a republican doing it. As soon as the rest of us realize what were dealing with then maybe we can make some changes but until then just realize that we will live at the mercy of the multinational corporations that fund and pay for politicians like kasick, boehner, portman, dewine or any of the other power brokers Ohio chose over real public servants. Good luck Ohio, I feel sorry for you, your in a mess and Im not sure you’ll ever get out of it. It is a myth to say that union employees can still bargain over wages and working conditions. The way the bargaining is set up favors management in any dispute. School boards work hand in hand with management, and they decide whose offer to choose when sides can’t decide. Class size is removed from what can be bargained, even though it can affect safety of both teachers and students, it is not considered a working condition. How will parents feel when this law allows class sizes of 35 or 40?

I smile reading the panic/anxiety/threatshidden in the comments of the privileged civil servant class. They vote in their political bosses who control the purse strings/money, make sweet back room deals and maintain control of endless supplies of money to feed their pie holes. Employees in private industry are an expense, but offset/reduce their “expense” by producing a product that generates capital. Civil servants are a straight out expense…and now we’ve found out how expensive they are. They don’t like being found out…and the sweet monetary deals they’ve created for thenselves at our expense. The cookie jar is now off limits, non-producers. The protections you’ve enjoyed will soon be gone. Welcome to the real world. Sit down, strap in, shut up, and hold on.

Kasich obviously has no respect for public employees like cops and teachers. His comments about a ticket he received was reminiscent of Obama’s police blunder. Increasing spending for charters and vouchers, while paving the way foe unquallified teachers to compete for jobs in Ohio show a disrespect for those already teaching. This is just more class warfare, only coming from Republicans instead of Democrats. How about all politicians stop choosing winners and losers, and pitting Americans against each other?

Squirrelly girl what you’ve just said … is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

OMG I can’t believe how two faced Republicans are. Obama should be impeached for helping Lybian citizens but Bush was a hero for jumping into Iraq for no reason. Give me a break. I am so fed up with Republicans making up their own rules.

So when i post something that does not agree with everyone and does not use foul or abusive language it gets taken down? Why? Must be the anti religion comment. But us “evil Progressives” are the ones who want to supress freedom?

This ballot issue should read as follows………………….. “WILL YOU PAY HIGHER TAXES TO FUND BENEFITS THAT THE VAST MAJORITY OF MIDDLE CLASS OHIOANS WILL NEVER HAVE?”

Does anyone else see the irony in instituting “merit based” systems for teachers (who have to pass hundreds of tests in order to get a degree and certification) and the “dumbing down” of the requirements to become a Police Officer in Dayton? WOW. Also, think of Kasich’s comment about being pulled over by an “idiot” - well, that may very well end up being the case in Dayton. Strange times here in the rust belt.

@D Thank you! It’s nice to see a plain as day no “spin” explanation of the facts. Certainly you are not of the Fox News ilk.

To settle a few issues: 1. The state Constitution allows for referendums on laws passed at the state level. This is democracy at its best. If the people don’t really want the law, they will repeal the law. If the people really want the law, then it will be law. Referendums are not allowed at the federal level. You wonder why nothing ever gets done, but the people did not have the opportunity to look at this law when evaluating candidates last year. A referendum gives people a chance to help manage the laws that run them. No one ever claimed democracy was fast or efficient. 2. Obama is allowed to bomb Libya under the auspices of being the commander in chief of the armed forces and his actions also are allowed under the War Powers Act which says that the president is allowed to dispatch troops or make war wherever he wants for sixty days without Congressional approval. The only limitation is that he must inform the leadership in the both houses of Congress within 48 hours of action beginning. He did this. 3. The effort to repeal SB5 can’t choose when it is on the ballot. That is controlled by state law. If the bill were put in place before April 6 and the proper number of signatures were collected, the referendum has to be on the November ballot. If the law was passed after April 6 and the proper signatures were collected, the referendum election would not occur till November 2012.

Wow @ignorance and squirrely! I suppose we should all get out our tinfoil hats and make sure those commies don’t get in through Palin’s back yard! The fact of the matter is Scott Walker in WI has been qouted as saying that the “union bills have no effect on state’s budgets.” Its a cash grab to line their pockets from the koch’s. The fact of the matter remains that as this country is skewing more diverse, younger and athiest (i.e. more progressive) The Hardcore conservative movement will fade. This is a last ditch effort to institute as much corporate and faith based legislation into our government before the republicans crazy their way out of our culture for good. I for one dream of that day. So for you squirrely: Have fun in your nationalistic, ethnocentric, 1950’sish hell hole known as merka’

Think this through people - Do you really want this on the ballot the same time all the schools and police departments have leavies on the ballot? You may preserve your benefits but for fewer jobs. But when was thinking a requirement of union membership.

The unions can bargain for wages, but the management makes the final decision, which means that it doesn’t matter if the workers can bargain for wages - they have no power in the bargaining (the management will always decide). It’s pointless, and the current administration and general assembly thinks people are stupid and will fall for that. We are not, however, stupid, and that “you can bargain for wages” BS will not work…………

All you naysayers of SB5 don’t even know what it says. Maybe if you read a little bit you would know that “It bans strikes by public workers, institutes a merit pay system, and limits unions to bargaining on wages, terms and conditions.” That’s right the unions can still bargain for wages! So they have to pay more for medical, who doesn’t? So quit with all your tired whining about cops and firemen and teachers making $8 an hour because it isn’t going to happen.

Squirrelly…the only reason we aren’t free anymore is because of supposed “leaders” like Kasich. He doesnt care about us - just himself. He’s out to make a name for himself. The law will be repealed and hopefully he will be recalled.

@xxx, It’s not the Dayton PD that is requiring the lower test scores, its’ the Department of Justice. Read up before you throw your thoughts out there. The officers want the best qualified candidates. It’ the big wigs who are trying to change it.

If SB 5 was to go into effect today, the results would be a complete disaster. Cities would fire all their cops and firemen and offer them part-time jobs w/o benefits. Kasich added the Casino folks to his list of enemies this week, Mother’s Day is coming up, are they next?

Squirrellygirl… I’ve read your numerous posts on all things and all they do is show your ignorance. So please quit making everyone else stupid and stop posting. You will not find anywhere in the Constitution where it says the President can bomb Libya without Congress’ approval. That is because the Constitution was vaguely written centuries ago to allow the Constitution to be flexible enough to meet the needs of current society. The Constitution does name the President Commander-in-Chief of all branches of armed services which allows him to do such things as bomb Libya or get involved in the countries Korean or Vietnam. We are not officially at war with Libya so he does not need Congress’ approval. Just like former presidents didn’t need Congress’ approval to get involved in Korea or Vietnam because we were never officially at war with them. It wasn’t until recently that they changed from “conflicts” to “wars”.

You hit the nail on the head. Read the DDN article about how hard the Dayton Police are trying to manipulate their tests so that they can hire blacks that wouldn’t have been hired without the additional “interview” they are now adding to the mix. That’s right. My taxes are going to go pay someone for their skin color, not their ability to do the job properly. Police jobs paid with our tax money should be given to the people who perform the best on their tests. So what language do you use in the interviews? Do you speak slang? Wow.
