UPDATED with tribute to teachers - union reaction - Gov. Kasich “thanks” public employees for their service; honors teachers, too

Gov. John Kasich really likes public employees, at least enough to issue a proclamation on Monday making this week “Public Service Appreciation Week.”

“This week I ask all Ohioans to reflect on all that our public employees do in our communities and thank them for the invaluable work they do each day,” Kasich said in a press release.

He also issued a proclamation for “Teacher Appreciation Week.”

“Ohio has tens of thousands of outstanding teachers for whom education is more than a job. It’s a calling,” he said in a press release. He also asked teachers to share their ideas on a “new pay system that rewards and encourages performance” by email to teachers@governor.ohio.gov.

Kasich and public employees, particularly public employee unions, are battling over Senate Bill 5, legislation Kasich signed to restrict public employee bargaining rights.

Opponents of the bill, including many teachers, are gathering signatures in an effort to put repeal of the issue on the Nov. 2 ballot.

Tim Burga, Ohio AFL-CIO president and a leader in the anti- SB 5 campaign, called Kasich’s proclamation “superficial” and “disingenuous” in light of Kasich’s support for the legislation.

“We believe every week should be public employee appreciation week,” Burga said.

Kasich and his Republican legislature must go! Repealing SB5 in November (I predict this will happen!)is a good first step. Please remember all those Republican legislators who will also be on the ballot! Let them know how you,my fellow citizens, feel about striping public service unions of their collective bargaining rights. Remember, this does nothing to solve the state’s budget problems!

Those who agree with Kasich couldnt teach a kid how to tie their shoes. I didnt do well in school but it was no fault of my teachers. So if you did poorly in school you agree with Kasich and that somehow will make you feel better about yourself, well you just failed again. This is only the first step in the republican agenda your next, and you just failed this lesson also. so now with a failing economy that is controled by the wealthy your going to have to sacrifice your well being to bail them out, and the teachers are only the first step.

I once saw this kid feeding a squirrel some peanuts, but as the squirrel walked in range, the kid whacked it across the head…Kasick. This fools got what they were asking for, when they voted for him. I don’t know who told those fools that they were Republicans.

kasick is disgrace and an embarrssment to the state and it took some really hoodwinked, fooled and dumbed down people to have ever voted for him…for him to talk about public servants is like a crack addict talking about the police.

How unfortunate to see such comments from an ungrateful citizenship when it comes to demonizing teachers. They are more than likely the former kids who terrorized their teachers when they were in gradeschool and now are turning their wonderful youngsters loose on the public. When they realize what it takes to become a teacher and what is involved in the profession maybe then their opinions will change and the way of life for everyone will improve. My compliments to the teachers of this state and country.

My isn’t Rod just holier than thou? By your math it’s $45k a year for 36 weeks work. That’s a pretty good salary if you ask me for working slightly over 2/3 of a year. If you’re so unhappy maybe it’s time for you to choose a new career path.

Being a dedicated Elementary Teacher in a neighboriong county for 37 years and reading the comments that a few individuals have made here is quite disappointing. These same individuals are the ones who probabaly can hardly remember who the first president of our country are now blasting the very individuals who tried and worked hard to get these individuals through school. If they could read the article then they should thank those educators who did their job. I am tied of low achievers blaming the educators when in fact it was themselves who failed along with their parents who didn’t insill enough of themselves into their child’s education. Educators are failing? Not as much as parents and politiions who failed the system of supporting the most precious thing, that being an education. After all Ohio’s supreme Court stated that education wasn’t funded fairly and the politians turned their backs on fixing the problem. Are they doing the right thing for our children so they are fairly funded to meet their needs for a better future. How is cutting the education funds for Ohio’s children helping to prepare Ohio’s future workers and leaders. I ask would you want these same people educating your children. If we teachers make so much and have it so easy why aren’t you beating on the school doors to do our jobs. Let’s think of teachers as baby sitters each parent paying $50 dollars a week times 36 weeks and then multipy that by 25 students. You do the math and see what you think a teacher really is worth. Most babysitter do what a lot of parents do turn on the TV or video games. See how prepared your children are for the work force then. see if they can pass the tests! I am proud of being a teacher. I wonder how proud some of you who are making these comments are of what you do or have accomplished in the lives of others.

This is a twist of the knife in the backs of our public employees and teachers. Kasich is the biggest goofball ever elected as Governor. SB5 needs to be on the ballot to send a message to the Governor and General Assembly.

You all easily want to forget who caused all of the extensive problems Kasich is dealing with though don’t you? Wait, was it (D) governor Strickland who got us billions into this? Yes. Same morons who voted for Obama whom blames Bush for everything under the sun and you buy that crap. Call it like it is. Hypocrites!

Its about the budget and the math. Teachers need to grow up and face reality like the rest of the world has been doing for the past decade or more! Stop taking it personally and just deal with it., like everyone else has! The inability of teachers to Understand why the changes are needed… makes them look ignorant.

I forgot to add, throw grandma out of the nursing home. That is the biggest Medicaid expense. (Maybe fix the healthcare problem that is bankrupting the whole country?) After reading some of these ignorant replies……. teachers should go to school 2 more years and be paid double what they make now. We have produced way too many people that think college educated people are going to work for minimum wage and no benefits. Pull your rocking chair up and keep listening to Rush and watch the middle class go down the drain.

Ohio will not have to worry about good teachers in the future. Wright State requires a 5 year program for teachers. (with masters) Why would you waste the money and 5 years of your life to make less money. After working years to repay the loan. LOL time for another profession….

@Jim, Kasich inherited a projected two year budget deficit of eight billion dollars. In addition, the state of Ohio owes the federal govenment $2+ billion dollars for unemployment claims during Stickland’s tenure. Strickland didn’t have to impose radical austerity because of federal “stimulus” dollars that allowed status quo… The three largest consumers of Ohio’s budget are medication (medicaid),education and incarceration. Which area would a decent and humble Stickland cut? The smooth road in state fiscal matters is behind us.

Kasich’s proclomationis not related to the PTA’s annual teacher appreciation week. Kasich is dishonest to not state that his proclomation is a duplication of something already occuring. Teachers are to blame for our economy? That is the most ignorant comment I have ever heard. Our education system and therefore our entire society, economy and future is doomed if we keep making teachers the scapegoat. Who would ever want to teach in this state now?

The commenter who claims teachers caused the ecomonic problems of Ohio is obviously extremely ignorant and has no knowledge of actual reality. The PTA may have proclaimed Teacher Appreciation Week, but K-sick did “Public Service Appreciation ” all on his own. Teachers, public employees, union members, and citizens are showing how they feel about Kasick’s “appreciation” by circulating petitions to put his Issue 5 on the ballot on November. I signed and I am not a teacher or a union member.

The national PTA (Parent Teacher Asso.)is sponsoring National Teacher Appreciation Week this week. Mr. Hershey’s ommission of this fact leads the reader to believe that the proclamation for teacher appreciation is a hypocritical slap in the face by the governor. Please, Mr. Hershey, spare us the union press releases, unless accompanied by all pertinent facts.

Teachers do not deserve a thank you. for what? Screwing the economy of Ohio? They deserve pay cuts, end of tenure, and maybe termination. Hire a lower paid bunch of part timers who do not walk around whiny and bit..ing!
