Committee backs amendment to exempt Ohio from health care mandate

Backers of a proposed state constitutional amendment to exempt Ohio from a key part of the federal health care overhaul championed by President Barack Obama have formed Ohioans for Healthcare Freedom.

The committee has filed paperwork with Secretary of State Jon Husted and is continuing to gather signatures to put the proposed constitutional amendment on the Nov. 8 ballot, Jeff Longstreth, campaign manager, said Monday.

The Ohio Republican Party and tea party groups across the state support the effort.

“It’s a great mix of liberty-minded groups as well as citizens across the state, Longstreth said.

The group so far has gathered about 320,000 signatures from registered voters and the goal is to file 500,000 or more by the July 6 deadline. To get the amendment on the ballot, at least 385,245 signatures must be filed.

The amendment would exempt Ohio from the so-called individual mandate in the health care overhaul which requires that by 2014 all Americans participate in a health care plan. It also would prohibit the state from enacting such a requirement.

The proposed amendment could end up on the ballot along with the proposed repeal of Senate Bill 5, legislation reducing public employee collective bargaining rights. To get the repeal issue on the ballot, organizers must file petitions with signatures from 231,147 registered voters by June 30.

I hope God raptures His church before Obama starts World War III with his stabbing Israel in the back and commanding them to give up their land they gained in ‘67 war. Israel can’t do this because they won’t be able to defend themselves against their enemies THAT SURROUND THEIR COUNTRY AND SAY THAT THEY WANT TO KILL EVERY JEW. I don’t think Obama considers Jews people. He is anti-Jew, anti-Japanese, anti-colonial (anti-Brittain)…If I’m still here next election, and there’s a vote to repeal SB-5, I vote against the repeal. That’s all I can say right now. But I truly believe America will be blown off the map by then. Venezuela is building nuclear bomb aimed at us with Russia’s help. Obama has done nothing to make this country more secure. Also, don’t forget Obama bombed Pakistan, another country that already has nuclear bombs. He’s got us in 3 wars now, so I believe we can now call Obama the WAR PRESIDENT!

@ Bean Counter, So I give you the World Health Org. and 3 different wolrdwide publications but they are “vague references”. That’s right I forgot, if FAUX news didn’t say it, it never happend. Bottom line is we have more uninsured people everyday and you and I are paying for them through taxes and higher premiums. Obama Care may not be the answer in its current form but at least they’re trying which is something that hasn’t happend since Clinton was in office.

Health care isn’t universal. If you need care in Germany you start at the Apotheke (not a drugstore, Apothekes only provide medications) You describe symptoms or show the clerk your problem, and the medication you need may be given to you. Many times a trip to the Dr is avoided. This would be equivalent to going to the pharmacist, saying AHHHH, and leaving with antibiotics, illegal in the U.S. BTW, in Germany herbal remedies are considered drugs and are rated for safety and efficacy. So much for comparing German and U.S health care.

If the Obamacare idea is so great, why are the states, politicians, unions and companies that pushed so hard for it all suddenly getting waivers? Also why did they require it be passed before people could actually READ the law? If anyone on the conservative end tried to do anything like that then the MSM would be all over them for it and you would see violent protests against it. This time we had union members who were told by their masters to be FOR it who were violent and beating up those who dared ask questions and oppose it unless they could find out about the laws BEFORE they were passed. Now those same leaders are getting all their people exempted from the laws they were beating people up for NOT wanting forced on them.

Cat Slobber forgets that unborn babies get “screwed” with Obama’s hc plan. I guess babies aren’t people just like the Jews weren’t considered people back when Hitler was trying to make them extinct. The minority who call themselves “progressives” are trying to nudge or push all Americans into their socialist box. It won’t work. We know freedom and we won’t give it up to let the government “take care” of us. And BTW, you and Bill Ayers WILL answer to God for your intents and plans for 25 million Americans who won’t be “re-educated” to socialism. President Obama should be ashamed of himself, but he is narcissistic. I’ve been praying for him to make good decisions for Americans in spite of himself.

Slobber, Again, please cite the specific study or studies you are refering to. I asked for specifics, and I get a generalization. Never claimed they came from the Obama Adm., although he has become thge poster child of partisan misinformation. Again, I challenge your information. As I stated before, I challenge your “facts” reagarding health care costs from around the world. They DO differ in many ways because there are no universal standards. Add that to agenda driven politicians and publications you get your distorted view of reality. Come on slobber, you made some very strong statements, now back it up with something other than vague references and name calling.

@Bean Counter, That’s 25+ years in Healthcare Technology \ Administration so yeah I stand by my statement. As for the numbers, they were released by the WHO and printed several times in USA Today, Newsweek, US News and World report. The numbers are not from the Obama Administration or have anything to do with ObamaCare. they are just FACTS about Healthcare costs versus benefit from around the world and we are getiing screwed with the current system and so far he’s the only one trying to do anything about it.

I would like to add my signature to get rid of this fiasco hc bill that forces redistribution of wealth, makes it mandatory to purchase hc which is unconstitutional, makes it mandatory for me to pay for murder of unborn babies, provides for death panels when they run out of money and have to ration money, and only gives waivers to unions and others who are “in bed” with this current progressive socialist administration.

Raiel, regarding “@WhatAboutBob?” are you disputing the facts about Obama’s hc fiasco bill? Americans are not going to lay down and let this president steal away our freedom of choice. He can’t make us purchase something, especially when he is giving unions which he is in bed with 1500 waivers. Conspiracy theories? How about down right chicago style thugery!

Slobber, I stand by my statement. Cite where you get your facts. be specific, please. 25 years in a field does not automatically equal expert status. In this day and of Orwellian/Obamian doublespeak “facts” are relative and easily manipulated and distorted, as Obama’s health care exemption fiasco indicates.

Its so contradictory. Obama makes it a “mandate” that everyone buy insurance… and then “exempts” thousands of businesses from it! ObamaCare is a prime example of the total Incompetence of Obama and his administration.

The people who will choose to not buy health insurance are the ones who won’t be able to pay for their own health care needs. They will just go to the hospital and they will have to take care of them, as they do now. That is not fair. Make them buy insurance!

I’m wondering what will happen if the people who don’t want to be compelled to purchase health insurance happen to be involved in a serious automobile accident, are rushed to the hospital, and incur thousands of dollars in medical expenses? Who pays their tab? Oh wait, I think I know. It gets passed on to the people who have insurance.

Those that want to live under socialism/communism should move to a country that is run under those guidelines. We are a “Republic” and that is the way we want it to stay. The reason that our elitist government allows so many illegals in the country is that they don’t care. They just want to get out of the hell-hole where they were born.

About the health care mandate. That government is best which governs least.

By raiel

May 16, 2011 4:10 PM | Link to this

If the Ohio ignores the individual mandate, our health care premiums will never decrease. I am tired of paying higher costs because people get free care at hospitals which pass those costs onto other patients. If you want to pay higher costs, then vote to exempt Ohio from the mandate. It’s the only part of the HCR designed to significantly reduce cost.

Bob: “If Jesus picked sides…..read Mark’s testimony about the eye of a camel.” So…are you saying the eye of the camel is mandatory forced redistribution of wealth using the health care bill? Seriously, Bob, that’s a stretch. Honestly, I know you are trying to say rich people won’t go to heaven, but that’s not what this verse means. The love of money is a sin, not money itself. If you love money more than God, then no, you won’t make it into heaven. There’s no way you can force this scripture and manipulate it to mean that if Americans don’t pass mandatory hc, they won’t go to heaven. You are assuming that mandatory hc will be fair, but it won’t. It will kill off the unborn babies because abortion is paid for under Obama’s hc plan. Also, it will kill off our elderly who are sick, because Obama’s plan provides for emergency shortfall of money, and to limit funding to whom Obama and his cohorts deem fit. That will be politically driven, totally unfair, and no, all republicans are not going to hell because they hate the hc bill. Wow… Bob, were you being a comic here, or were you serious?

Accidental deaths, gun deaths, ect. Check it out, it may enlighten you. Measuring methods are not universal.

Obviously Cat Slobber can’t read. This Bill will not keep anyone from participating in Obama’s healthcare plan IF THEY WANT TO. What it will do is keep the Federal govt. from MAKING YOU BUY INSURANCE if you don’t want to. BTW Kitty Drool how nice of you to open your post with an insult. Typical left wing style. You preach tolerance and yet you HATE ANYONE WHO DISAGREES WITH YOU.

Jesus would say, if a man doesn’t work, neither shall he eat. It’s in there, you just have to read it. Nowhere is forced redistribution of wealth endorsed by Jesus. Nowhere. You people who say it is against Jesus apparently haven’t cared enough about Jesus to read the Word of God for yourselves. Perhaps you should find another church that encourages you to read the Bible for yourself. Just sayin…if you haven’t read the Bible, how do you know what YOUR preacher is preaching is actually the Word of God or just his skewed opinion of it, and maybe your preacher hasn’t read the Word of God.

The SHEEPLE just don’t get it. There were 35 million uninsured when this debate started back during the DUHbya 8 years of do nothing about it. Now there’s over 50 million uninsured and rising. We are the only major industrialized nation in the world that still does it this way and we pay 2.5 times per capita as much for healthcare than the next closest nation. (Germany) Yet all of those supposedly inferior socialized medicine countries have longer life expectancies. DO THE MATH………
