With a friendly audience of 600 on hand, former Democratic Gov. Ted Strickland returned to the Statehouse on Tuesday for the unveiling of his official gubernatorial portrait, painted by nationally recognized portrait artist Leslie Adams of Toledo.

“I am humbled and honored that you came,” Strickland, 69, told the standing-room crowd in the Statehouse Atrium. Strickland was Ohio’s 68th governor.

Former Republican Gov. Bob Taft, Strickland’s predecessor, former U.S. Sen. John Glenn and Glenn’s wife Annie, Strickland’s wife Frances, other Strickland family members and many members of the Strickland administration attended.

Gov. John Kasich, the Republican who defeated Strickland by 77,127 votes - 49.04 percent to 47.04 percent- in November 2010 was invited by the Capital Square Review and Advisory Board but was tied up in meetings and didn’t attend, said Rob Nichols, Kasich’s spokesman.

“We appreciate the invitation,” said Nichols. “I hope they had a good event.”

It was a time for remembering, including remarks from Tom Esenwein, a retired Ohio State Highway Patrol member who served on Strickland’s executive protection detail.

“He led by example,” said Esenwein. “He is the kindest man many of us ever met.”

The portrait was privately funded and cost $40,000.

House Republicans pick Margaret Conditt in 55th District

House Republicans have picked Margaret Conditt, a former Liberty Twp. trustee, to fill the vacant 55th District Ohio House seat, Speaker William Batchelder, R-Medina, said Tuesday.

Conditt will be seated Wednesday to represent the southeastern Butler County district, said Batchelder. Representatives make $60,583 a year.

“She’s really very remarkable,” Batchelder said.

She retired in 2006 from serving in professional and scientific relations at Procter & Gamble, a press release said.

She received her Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Colorado, the release said.

Conditt has remained active in various Republican endeavors, such as working with the Butler County Republican Party, serving as a delegate alternate for the Republican National Convention in 2008, and assisting with various statewide and national political campaigns, said the release.

She was among 12 applicants for the seat, which became vacant when Bill Coley resigned to take a Senate seat. Coley filled the Senate seat vacated by Gary Cates who resigned to take a post with the Ohio Board of Regents.

Ohio Democrats file FEC complaint against Mandel

The Ohio Democratic Party has filed a complaint with the Federal Election Commission against Ohio Treasurer Josh Mandel, who’s considering a 2012 campaign for the Republican U.S. Senate nomination.

In the complaint, filed Monday, the Democrats accused Mandel of using the resources of his state campaign and of his state office to support a run for the U.S. Senate. The GOP candidate will face Democratic incumbent Sen. Sherrod Brown.

The complaint said that federal law “clearly prohibits this kind of conversion of state campaign and official resources.”

Mandel’s office did not respond to calls but Jahan Wilcox, press secretary for the National Republican Senatorial Committee, in an email said that “Ohio Democrats are far more worried about this Senate race than they’ve let on.”

Because Brown has voted for “government-run health care” and “for raising taxes instead of helping to create Ohio jobs, they have every reason to be concerned,” Wilcox said.

Mandel and former state Sen. Kevin Coughlin, R-Cuyahoga Falls, have set up federal committees to consider a U.S. Senate race.

Ken Blackwell, the 2006 GOP candidate for governor and former Ohio treasurer and secretary of state, also is considering running but has not set up a committee yet.
