House to vote on texting-while-driving ban

In a break from the Statehouse’s highly-charged partisan atmosphere, the Ohio House today is set to vote on legislation that would ban texting while driving, a measure that has strong bipartisan support.

House Bill 99 is jointly sponsored by Rep. Rex Damschroder, a Fremont Republican, and Rep. Nancy Garland, a Columbus Democrat.

The bill was recommended for passage unanimously by the House Transportation, Public Safety and Homeland Security Committee.

I am all for safer roads, but my problem with this bill is the enforcement. First of all, we already have laws on the books that cover texting while driving, it is called “Reckless Operation”. If the person’s texting is interfering with his driving, stop him and cite him for that. Why create yet another law. Also, from what I read this is a primary law, which means police can stop you just for that and does not need another reason. Not wearing your seatbelt kills and injures way more people then texting, but the State of Ohio lawmakers have kept that a secondary law, meaning you have to be doing something else to get stopped for that. A bit silly if you ask me..

For those of you that think this is BS try driving I-75 while some Jack-Wagon is texting. This is a problem that is just as bad if not worse than driving while intoxicated. What is so important that it can not wait until you get off the road to read or send? This world was a better place before cell phones and texting!

This bill also bans using inputting information into GPS devices, and texting while stopped at a light. It’s overreaching.

Thank God for cutting edge legislation like this and the smoking ban. Now I can sleep easy tonight knowing our state is in good hands. What’s next…voting on the official state bird?

The Comedian Gallagher hasd an idea was that all drivers carry one of those toy guns that shoots a dart with a suction cup on the end of it. This dart would have a flag on it that says ‘STUPID’. Every time you see a driver doing something stupid you pull up beside them, roll down your window and shoot their car with the ‘STUPID’ dart. If they have 3 ‘STUPID’ darts stuck to their car then the police will pull them over and give them a ticket for being ‘STUPID’!

It’s about damn time! Now, if the Ohio Legislature could make the ODOT place signage on our highways saying…. “SLOWER TRAFFIC KEEP RIGHT!” or “Stay in the Right Lane to Talk, Eat, Read and/or to Apply Make-up” etc…

I wrote my representative to support the bill, and I also wrote my senator to concur when the bill moves to Senate enactment. Further, I encouraged both Rep. Luckie and Sen. Beagle to develop and sponsor legislation that bans cell phone use while driving. Thanks for posting this short article.

Whatever happened to fixing the school funding problem in this state? In case our state legislators have forgotten…it’s still a mess. How about fixing the BIG problems first, and we’ll worry about these BS issues later?!?!
