Poll: Voters cool to Kasich, support SB 5 repeal and photo ID requirement
Ohio voters continue to disapprove of Republican Gov. John Kasich’s performance and right now they appear ready to repeal Senate Bill 5, Kasich-backed legislation to limit public employee collective bargaining.
Those are two key findings of a Quinnipiac University poll released Wednesday.
In the poll, 50 percent disapproved of Kasich’s performance, while 35 percent approved. That’s a little worse for Kasich than a May 18 poll which found 49 percent disapproval and 38 percent approval.
Voters said they’d back repeal of SB 5, 56-32 percent, slightly stronger backing for repeal that May 18 results which found 54 percent for repeal and 36 percent against. A referendum on SB 5 appears likely to make the Nov. 8 ballot.
Also in the poll, voters overwhelmingly backed, 78-20 percent, efforts to require photo identification to vote, a measure that has passed the Ohio House, but not the Senate.
The poll also found that by a narrow margin, 48-45 percent, voters support a proposed constitutional amendments to block any federal efforts to require Ohioans to buy health insurance. The proposed amendment also appears likely to be on the Nov. 8 ballot.
Kasich’s approval rating continued to fall even though since the last poll the legislature passed and he signed a two-year state budget that closed a potential multi-billion dollar shortfall without raising taxes.
The poll found support for how Kasich and the GOP-controlled legislature handled the budget.
Sixty-three percent said it was a good thing that taxes were not raised and the budget deficit was closed by just spending cuts. Just 28 percent said taxes should have been raised.
The economy has remained sluggish and unemployment relatively high through Kasich’s first seven months as governor and that could be a reason for the low approval rating, said Peter Brown, assistant director of the Quinnpiac University Polling Institute.
“Governors get credit or blame just as presidents get credit or blame for big things like the economy, whether or not they have the ability to change them,” said Brown.
Kasich doesn’t face re-election until 2014 which gives him time to “drive home that he did what he said he was going to do to balance the budget and wasn’t going to raise taxes,” said Brown.
The poll was based on telephone interviews with 1,659 registered voters conducted from July 12 to Monday, July 18 by live interviewers over land lines and cell phones. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.4 percentage points.

Kasich will be using the lease of the turnpike to rebuild the infrastructure in Ohio….. this is TONS of new jobs. The AFLCIO is fighting this with every dollar to stop Kasich and SB5. If they lose, Ohio will simply have more jobs and the taxpayers won’t be subsidizing their unions. Just sayin….

SB5 is only the beginning of what is to come in the future. Kasich’s mandate is all in his head. He was simply a better choice than his predecessor. All career politicians are only there for the prestige and feathering their own nest. No one should be in public service with their own agenda in mind. They are elected to serve the people not themselves.

Looks like Squirrelly doesn’t want to talk about her true hero, Rupert Murdoch, the one ultimately responsible for her incredibly long and boring list of FOX talking points. Just ignore it and it will all blow over… yeah.

Blah-blah-blah, same old cra(p)ola. Haven’t you got anything new to talk about? How about what’s happening with YOUR hero, Rupert Murdoch, the guy who says it’s okay to hack into dead/missing people’s emails? But you haven’t heard too much about that since they’re not reporting anything on FOX about it other to say it’s all lies… Squirrely, have you noticed that your other boy, Glenn Beck got himself fired from FOX TV (FINALLY!) I’ll bet you hung on his every word. Can’t wait to hear what you say about Murdoch… Oh wait, it’ll be more: “All LIES”, “Brazilian Oil contracts”, “teleprompter”, “Rev. Wright”, blah-blah-blah. Zip it.

I forgot to add to Holder’s list of bad stuff that he protected the Black Panthers (who interfered with elections, standing outside threatening people standing in line waiting to vote, the same election Obama was elected for President) from prosecution. Holder refused to prosecute people of color, and the Black Panthers, although caught on video tape waiving a batton and yelling threats at people in line waiting to vote while the black panthers were dressed in military garb including military boots and battons. Have YOU seen this video, too? This is how Obama got elected for president, didn’t you know that?

Hmmm said: “The reason you never heard of Soros, Cass Sunstein, etc., before President Obama was elected is because you now have your tv and/or radio tuned to FOXNoise or Rush Limbaugh 24/7.” These are people Obama has associated with regardless of what news stations I listen to. Who or what I watch has nothing to do with Obama and George Soros (a Jew who hates Jews who assisted Hitler during Holocaust, who has destroyed currencies of several other countries prior to eyeing our country and buying/ contributing/ manipulating our mainstream media and many communist/socialist/ marxist community organizations), or Obama and Cass Sustein (regulatory czar who is refusing to grant deep water oil drilling permits, causing oil rigs to depart America with their jobs for Brazil and other countries that are more willing), Obama and Bill Ayers (who wants to kill 25 million americans who refuse to be reeducated to socialism, and who allowed Obama to start his political career at his residence), or Obama and Rev Wright (a “man of the cloth” who said “G D America!” and whose church Obama attended for over 20 years), or Obama and Van Jones (communist who Obama appointed as green manufacturing czar), or Obama and Holdren (another Obama appointed czar who wants to SECRETLY sterilize our water supply), or Obama and Holder (who pushed for terrorist trials here in U.S. instead of via Military trial, who pushed for Muslim mosque to be built where radical Muslims brought town NY Twin Towers, who also pushed for illegal immigrants rights, who also was at the head of fast and furious who gave guns to illegal aliens through that program which ended up killing a border patrol cop), or Obama and … you get the idea? The point is, I don’t personally know any communists, socialists, marxists, black panthers, left wing radicals, terrorists, (well…the list goes on), and wonder why and how other Americans can feel secure with someone like Obama with his questionable affiliates ruling our country and turning us into a 3rd world country in one term as president.

@Squirrellygirl, no I am not “Karon”. Funny how you think everyone is “lying”, because you were at a Tea Party and didn’t see the same thing as Mike. Maybe he was at a different one? Yes indeed, everyone but YOU is in the wrong, all the time. The reason you never heard of Soros, Cass Sunstein, etc., before President Obama was elected is because you now have your tv and/or radio tuned to FOXNoise or Rush Limbaugh 24/7. Now you’re the EXPERT because Glenn, Sean, Bill-O & company have transmitted continuous waves of propaganda at you for months. Aren’t you tired of lying awake at night pulling the covers over your head and hugging your worn-out teddy bear all the while FOX blares in the background about the latest “socialist/Marxist” transgression that is blamed on Obama and the Democrats? If you PRAY, why WORRY? If you WORRY, why bother PRAYING? Lack of faith seems to be your dilemma, leaving you with all this FEAR. Come towards the light, Squirrelly!

Hey, Average Mike, I went to a tea party gathering (it was at the Nutter Center). Which one did you go to? I doubt you went because when I went, everyone wasn’t over 60 and everyone wasn’t white. So you are obviously lying. Just sayin’ that maybe if you want to convince people that you are a Republican that you not lie about stuff like going to a tea party gathering, because we all know you are lying about it. You know what all of this talk reminds me about? Our debt ceiling, and how unpresidential Obama looked on tv last Friday night when he was whining about how Republicans didn’t know how to say “yes” when Obama was the one, we find out, that changed the deal at the last minute to increase revenue. The deal breaker was Obama, not the Republicans. So now we hear that Boehner is working on a deal independent of President Obama. What I would like to see is Boehner’s proposal agreed to by Congress/Senate and then Boehner elected as President in 2012. Now that would be a “change” for the better!

Brazilian oil, Cass Sunstein, Van Jones, etc. Until Obama started running for the office of president of the United States of America, I didn’t even know who these people even were. I don’t personally have any communist, socialist, or marxist friends, and I’m not even sure if I have ever even met a communist, marxist, or socialist before. But we can now see the evidence that they do indeed exist, and are active in trying to overthrow our Republic. All of a sudden, our government is full of them. What happened? Obama got himself elected by posing as a centrist. Then he put these people in powerful positions, some of them without being properly vetted. Did Americans fall asleep and let the socialists take over our government? I guess so…but it’s not too late to get rid of them. We need to make it illegal for communists to serve in our government, just like it USE to be before these communists rewrote our laws!

Hmmmm, is that you, Karen? The “train” girl? She blogs under “null” too. No, I’m not paid by anyone to blog. Thanks for the compliment, though. I am still a concerned citizen that Obama’s policies are hurting our Republic. Kasich has done the job he was voted in to do. The unions, the marxists, the socialists, the progressives, the Democrats, whatever you want to call them or whatever name they are going by now, their policies won’t get our country out of trouble, especially with all of the high spending and lack of concern on cutting the deficit of this current administration. At least Kasich is helping our state attract businesses again. As long as this bill isn’t repealed, we are out of the red and back on track. The marxists and unions will do nothing but scare jobs away. If the unions have their way, the public workers will be on unemployment because Kasich has to balance the budget one way or another. Either he can make the better choices up front, or the layoffs will come later. If you repeal the bill, you will get what you deserve.

We Are Marxists were successful in getting their repeal signatures. I see some here are into that class warfare. If S.B. 5 gets repealed, public union workers will just go on unemployment. Their benefits will expire, and we’ll here debates on extending unemployment benefits. You know the classic Marxist will say, “if you don’t vote for an extension, you’re not for working families.” S.B. repeal = Let the layoffs begin!

It does seem strange that many of these comments supporting SB5 all touch on the same old talking points… I wonder if SquirrellyGirl gets paid to post the same old blather about Brazilian oil, Cass Sunstein, Van Jones, etc. There are paid trolls on the major blog sites whose only function is to stir the pot and rehash the same old you-know-what. So she’s probably using 5-10 alias names to pound her talking points through. Nice little paycheck? Or is she merely a confused Murdoch accolyte? I am so ashamed and embarrased of my republican party. I am a registered republican and feel our party needs a major change. In Ohio Kasic is attacking the Middle class, while taking care of his wallstreet and business buddies. Look into who gave to his race. Wallstreeters, Big energy Companies, The Kock brothers, and charter schools. I go to tea party meetings. White, over 60, racist, and selfish is what I see. The tea baggers can’t even get along with each other. The minority tea baggers are taking the republican party and the nation hostage in washington. Republican friends stand up and protect the people not the extremely rich.

Not all public employees are union members. We have also had furloughs and pay cuts. I pay 10% into my retirement system; you pay 4% into social security. Public employees never get bonuses…and obviously, in these comments, Republicans never learned spelling or grammar!

Joanie, you can’t compare the salaries of rank and file police officers with the salaries of America’s highest paid CEO’s. That’s just plain silly. What if I said, the average police officer makes 48K and the average elementary school janitor makes 12K. How can those crooked cops expect to make 4 times as much as the janitor? Get the point Joanie? Your claim is just plain silly! Do you really think those police officers aren’t corrupt? : )

Two comments Joanie: First) The average you quote is for the top 250 CEO’s in America. That’s out of hundreds of thousands of CEO’s. There are over 100 CEO’s in Middletown OH, and only a couple of them make more than 1 million annually. MOST of them make less than 250K. Nice try! Did the Union pay you to post that hogwash? Second) According to the US CONSTITUTION, the salaries of Privately held Corporate Executives is NO BUSINESS of the Federal Government. Are you a Communist too?

Carl, since you asked, and since you obviously have NO clue: THE SUPREME COURT RULED ON ABORTION. Congress can not overturn that decision. Have you ever read the Constitution? Never mind, the answer is obvious! If you had, you would realize that the Congress makes the Federal Budget, not the President. Now listen closely: The Republicans controlled Congress AND the budget from 1995 to 2006. In those 12 years they increased the debt 4.03 Trillion, an average of 336 billion per year. The Democrats controlled Congress AND the budget from 2007 through 2010. In those 4 years they increased the budget 6.3 trillion, an average of 1.6 trillion per year. Which party got us in this mess?

Was it the fact that Bush had an unprecedented 52 consecutive months of economic growth that upset you? Was it the fact that Bush held unemployment under 5.5% for over 7 years that upset you? Was it the fact that Bush had 5 consecutive years of declining deficit spending that upset you? Was it the fact that Bush’s largest deficit ever was merely 1/3 of Obama’s smallest? he only used certain provisions because what he did was just insert them into the budget that when they become inseted into the budget it becomes law. it was just a back door way of getting what he wanted. the cutting taxes for the rich is actually an income tax that strickland suspended to balance the budget and it cost the state 800 million dollars. it is just that him and his friends would benefit the most from it and he uses the small business to be his lobbyists becuase if he only allows millionaires to be on the stage with him than it will be obvious who he works for. and i believe merit pay is what he used but offered no way of inacting or any formula to use for teacher pay. this bill simply makes it so that employees pay for future deficits and they dont have to cut from anything else and since it will only affect employees which is a smaller group than the taxpayer there will be less political payback at the polls.

@ Repeal SB 5.. I can tell you I pay about the same per month as you do. (Around $200.00) I will also tell you that my deductible is $1000 Ea / $4000 per family. I don’t necessarily think you or the teachers are overpaid, but I agree with the other post that the teachers have been shielded from a lot of the cuts everyone else has had to endure. It’s time they give a little back too. Maybe just a 5% cut across the board for every teacher in Ohio. That’s less than I had to take to stay employed. Is that just a harsh reality? For the record, Kasich DID NOT cut any taxes for the rich. That’s a false statement. And, I was under the assumption that Kasich did indeed use provisions of SB5 to balance the budget. Have you heard otherwise? I will do a little research…

How many countries has George Soros manipulated their currencies and caused them to fall? Why is this person even allowed in our country? I agree with everything you said, Mr. Jones. Obama is now up to 1500 waivers for his friends including the unions. These are the very people that want the rest of us to be made (mandatory) to pay for this health care insurance monstrocity bill that was snuck through by this socialist administration. I think GE should be made to pay their fair share of taxes. Just because they are in bed with Obama shouldn’t give them a free ride! But that’s what happens when you have a socialist administration in high government. As far as 200 a month for insurnace what were your deductibles because ours are 400 per member and 800 for the family. There’s a good reason unions are representing less and less workers. Remember the “good” ol’ days when unions made their auto workers strike for higher wages/benefits? Where are those jobs now? People without jobs don’t need unions to represent them. Unions abuse their power, are politically driven, and are corrupt. To “By Repeal SB 5”—you only pay $200/month for your insurance? You are out of touch with reality. Some people in private industry pay a lot more than that for our health insurance. I had to elect inferior insurance because I couldn’t afford the better insurance I use to have. ‘nuff said. SB-5 is here to stay. Too bad you might have to pay a little more for your benefits to catch up with the rest of us. That sounds fair to me. Kasich is drawing jobs to Ohio now, and our state’s credit rating improved. Not bad for the short time Kasich has been in office. Good job!

If people who say they suppported this bill knew what was in it, they would change their mind if they was a decent human being. This bill says wages can be negotiated but what they dont say is that at anytime during an imapasse the gov can just impose the last and final offer ( where is negotiating). It also strips away seniority meaning that when people have 25+ years they will be terminated simply for the sake of the budget ( check with former employees of Indiana it happened there). Also at anytime JK or any city manager can declare fiscal emergency and open up and change anything previously agreed to so once again where is the point to even negotiate. And what free benefits do employees get? I pay 200 a month for my health along with any deductibles and copays along with 20% of medical bills. I also am doing it on wages from 3 years ago while getting 3.2 hours taken from every paycheck to pay for my cost savings days. Its not our retirement plan because 400 a month goes from my paycheck to that. This bill also says that the employee will pay AT LEAST 15 % of health care…there is no cap meaning they can just raise it to 50% on a whim and force people to no insurance. And anyone who thinks none of this would happen and that this is just someone being real extreme has not worked for the government that all ready has a powerless union that does not need cut off at the knees.

Does DDN even KNOW how to report news without showing the authors prejudice against conservatives? I’m convinced that socialists like Obama calling their fellow representatives and followers “enemies” because we disagree with them on policies just about sums it up. There it is. As long as socialists are allowed to represent us in our government, we will be divided as a nation. Kasich is doing the job he was VOTED IN to do. Polls mean little at this point. Kasich is and will be gov for the rest of his term. I’m always amazed that people seem to vote for a candidate who offers “change” and then have second thoughts when the change affects them or someone they know. Kasich isn’t doing anything unexpected based on his compaign promises. You wanted change, you got it. Same with Boehner, voters wanted change from the Dems who they overwhelming elected two years previous. Now they don’t like Boehner because the changes are going to impact them and their pockets. You can’t have it all and not be be willing to pay for it and you can’t complain about spending without being willing accept cuts. Get over it and move on.

LeftofDayton - I know LOTS of people who couldn’t stomach Strickland and can’t stand Obama. What’s your point? If we repeal SB5 we get what we deserve.

@DDAY… Just out of curiousity, do all those people that support the repeal of SB5 belong to a Union? That’s like asking the hens if they support killing the fox….

You have to love the left. they do not seem to care about the soundness of our state or country, just if the hand outs keep coming. Standards and Poors has upgraded our debt rating but you don’t hear any libs saying good job. I just hear them yelling, don’t take my ridiculous hand outs that the private sector could never get away with.

Many people did not do their research and were tricked into voting for Kasich and now regret it. The so called Liberals have this poll. The so called Conservatives have money for commercials on TV. Either way its all a joke.

I participated in this poll. What is not stated in this article is that you had the option to not answer any question. What also is not being reported are the questions asked about the performance of Sherrod Brown and Obama. I wonder what those results are?

I participated in the poll. They don’t state that you didn’t have to answer any question that you don’t want to answer. They also don’t report about all the questions on the poll about Sherrod Brown’s or Obama’s performance. I wonder what those results show.

I’m in a work place with 234 employees that has both management and entry level positions. The majority support the repeal of sb 5 and most regret voting for kasich.

Quinnipiac University pols are teh liberal Press’s main reference documents. hey are also biased in favor of Liberals. Governor kasich is fixing the mess left by the one-time Governor Strickland. So Strickland screwed up both the economy and remains a “favorable” Governor by the Quinnipiac University polls. Why? Because he failed Ohioans. But since he didn’t do anything to upset the Unions, the DDn loved him. Look folks, Ohio has a balanced Budget Law. Governor kasich was required by law to submit a Balanced budget. The hard choices were to correct the failues of teh Strickland Administration.

Average Joe you are correct. SB 5 will go down in landslide.

These polls are a travesty. Kasich has done what he said he would, which is better than the President. He has kept his word. Standard & Poor’s ratings services just upgraded Ohio’s debt rating! Liberal media bias always tries to dump on Republicans….even when they are getting the job done.

Looks like Mr Hershey is bios. I don’t see how this article is helping the tax payers. Maybe if people had more money in their pockets they would be able to afford the DDN to line their bird cages with.

It isn’t always popular to do the right things. SB5 is a good bill. JK may be a one time governor but we will be the better for it. The State will have a balanced budget and that doesn’t sit well with Tax and Spend Democrats.

Kasich makes no apologies for the partisan legislation he signs into law and is very aware that he may be a one term Governor. When you upset the policemen and women, teachers and firefighters, you are going to take some blows politically. I know several conservatives who just can’t reason some of his policies to the point where they’ll be voting for the first time on the democratic side. We will see in November.

Quinnipiac poll predicted John Kasich didn’t have a chance to get elected over Ted Strickland in Ohio….. What were the questions and how were they presented? I support SB5 although I think it could use a little work. Beyond that, I work in an office of over 100, and nearly everybody supports Kasich and SB5. We’ll see in November.
