Ohio poll: Obama approval lags, but president tops GOP challengers

President Barack Obama’s approval rating with Ohio voters has dipped slightly, but Obama still leads major GOP challengers in possible 2012 match ups, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released Thursday.

Also, the poll finds that Ohio Treasurer Josh Mandel leads former state Sen. Kevin Coughlin of Cuyahoga Falls for the 2012 GOP U.S. Senate nomination, while incumbent Democratic U.S. Sherrod Brown holds healthy leads over both of them in general election match ups.

In the poll, 50 percent disapprove of how Obama’s handling his job, while 46 percent approve, down from a May 19 poll which found 49 percent approval and 45 percent disapproval.

Also, voters split on whether the president deserves a second term, with 47 percent “no” and 46 percent “yes.”

In the scramble for the 2012 GOP presidential nomination, “don’t know” is the big leader at 28 percent.

Here’s the rest: former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, 16 percent; former Alaska governor and 2008 GOP VP candidate Sarah Palin, 15 percent; U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota, 11 percent and Texas Gov. Rick Perry, 8 percent.

No other candidate tops 6 percent.

Romney comes closest in match ups with Obama, with the president leading, 45-41 percent.

The others trail far behind. Obama tops Palin, 51-35 percent; leads Bachmann, 49-36 percent and tops Perry, 47-35 percent.

In the battle for the 2012 GOP U.S. Senate nomination, nearly half of Republicans - 46 percent - are undecided. Mandel gets 35 percent to 12 percent for Coughlin.

Incumbent Democrat Brown beats Mandel, 49-34 percent and bests Coughlin, 50-32 percent.

As far as the presidential race, “voters are saying that they’re not overwhelmed by Mr. Obama but at this point they like him better than the alternatives,” said Peter Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

The poll was conducted from July 12 to Monday, July 18 and is based on interviews with 1,659 registered voters done by live interviewers on land lines and cell phones. Overall, the poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.4 percentage points.

The survey included 563 Republicans and GOP only questions have a margin of error of plus or minus 4.1 percent.

This poll does not impress me as being acurate. There are too many people in this country displeased with the anti-American backroom deals Obama conducts with people like Rahm Emanuel, George Soros, Van Jones and other Muslim characters. I support christianity which has no room for Islam rituals. I have no trust in OBama.

I’m with Earl on this one. It’s overwhelming how BAD Obama’s policies have been, how much DAMAGE he’s done to our country, to our economy. He’s polarized us as a nation. He looked like a whiny child Friday night announcing those bad Republicans wouldn’t say “yes” to anything, yet he was the one who added billions of dollars in revenues and changed the agreement to the place where Republicans knew it was fruitless to deal with him anymore. Obama couldn’t get the Democrats to agree with anything when they were in power, and now here we are in a place we haven’t been before. We are close to losing our good credit rating, and Obama is whining. My question is this, has Obama done anything right regarding the economy? I don’t think he has. Obama’s defeat should be a no brainer. I do think we need a real Republican, not one like Romney where you have to guess whether he’ll lean too far to the left. This is no time to play around. We can’t afford to have another 4 years of Obama’s policies. The very life of our Republic is dependent upon getting Republican representation next time.

Five hours a day watching TV? Yeah, I do that, if you count porn. Nothing weird, just soft-core bestiality, with some tranny-granny stuff on the side. Occasionally, I go for some Filipino Cabin Boy / Sea Captain role playing action…….. But like I said, nothing weird.

I find the early morning drive into downtown Dayton relaxing, refreshing and inspiring. Looking out my car window, I see a homeless man urinating against a tree, and a little further along I see a crack addict breaking into a parked car. The gentle crunch of an empty 40 ouncer under my tires, and the sound of a hooker shouting “ten bucks” while she lifts her skirt remind me how lucky I am to be in downtown Dayton. ————————————————————————————————As I exit my car, I momentarily reflect on the fact that I may never see this vehicle again, but my reflection is interrupted by the used condom stuck to the sole of my shoe. I quietly stroll past a truck filled with City of Dayton maintenance workers, all fast asleep, bless their hearts.————————————————————————————————————————— As I approach the heart of the city, the air is filled with the aroma of pot, B.O., exhaust fumes, and….what’s that? A stiff on the sidewalk? Wow! This IS a special day!!! My steps are buoyant and an irresistible smile lights my face. How fortunate I am, to be working every day in downtown Dayton!!!!

Here’s an idea… let’s not take a poll on Obama -vs- an unknown opponent, but rather a poll on Barack’s handling of issues and events during his presidency. You don’t have to wait for a periodical to steer your thinking… you can be a “poll of one”. Here are some criteria to consider with Obama: Egypt, Libya, Israel, Great Britain, Brazil, Mexico, Iraq, Iran Afghanistan, Pakistan, loss of jobs, loss of value of the dollar, $1.62 trillion annual deficits and climbing, loss of homes, loss of the space shuttle program, loss of the American Dream, and any other issue you feel is appropriate to judge the man. Now ask yourself, “Do I want more of what Barack is giving us?”

FYI, Fox news has NEVER relied on Quinnipiac polls for anything. I dont know where you are getting your information. If you want a true mash up of all the polls, go to realclearpolitics.com and check polls. It gives a variety of polls, including quinnipiac, rassmussen, NY Times, CBS, ABC, and others. It also shows the margins of error and RCP avg of all polls. Really, relying on one poll to suggest it is all inclusive is naive. DDN needs to be more balanced to be believed.

Don’t you know how to write your WHOLE name, J? You think I’m hilarious and stupid, and I think you are naive and unintelligent with no common sense. Forgive me for thinking out of the box and not using the same term with which you are familiar. I’m pretty sure everybody here knows that “nameless Republican candidate” is the same as “generic Republican candidate”. Duh. I’m trying not to patronize you, but I think that is impossible. If you only had a brain…

Quinnipiac University Polling Institute is just another poll skewer that supports the Democrat Party. If an election were held today Obama would definitely lose by a landslide. The way the Democrats are trashing the economy and employment, the military, the healthcare industry, and the energy situation it would not surprise me if the GOP wins the Senate and widens the dominance of the House also, possibly having a super majority in both chambers. I just hope it happens so people can see the American dream once again.

We voters might have enough time to correct our error of the previous election. We don’t have the time for another serious mistake at the ultimate leadership position of this country poll or no poll.

Quinnipiac University poll is one relied on by many media sources including your own Fox News realthinker. I’m an independent but if Bauchman is running i’ll campaign for Obama for the lesser of 2 evils. God only knows she may wanna send me to her husbands straightening out camp since they believe gay’s can be changed….

Who commissioned and paid for this bogus “poll”? Who chose the “guidelines”? No polling outfit does this for nothing. Why would anyone believe a “poll” that questions twice as many Democrats (1659 minus 563 equals 1006 Dems.) as Republicans would give accurate results? As always, this is a propaganda tool, designed to create either peer pressure to jump on the Dem. bandwagon with the “majority” or ease fears that Obama may be slipping. Factually accurate it isn’t, and yes, the DDN is very selective about the propaganda polls it publishes. Curiously, a poll the DDN has not published from PPP, Public Policy Polling, shows Bachmann leading Obama! PPP is owned by the Democrat party. Just one more reason why I will never pay for this “newspaper” no matter how “updated” it is.

I like the posts because it shows how the Republicans are scared. After what is happening across the country where the middle class is being blamed for everything. Those conservative democrats were tricked into voting republican. And now are coming out regretting their vote.

How can ANYONE approve of the job the obama is doing? He has done NOTHING to benefit this country and much of what he has done is actually destroying the foundations of our once great nation.

They don’t show the poll for the nameless Republican running against Obama because the results wouldn’t help the Democratic party. Since this poll is skewed towards favoring Democrats, showing those results would weaken their stance when in reality this poll is useless. How much you wanta bet they polled more Democrats than Republicans? But there are more Republican voters than there are Democrats. Isn’t it strange that they only report how many Republicans they polled, and not the numbers for Democrats and Independents? And calling an 8 point swing “slight” is rather revealing, huh?

So, how many DEMOCRATS did they poll? More than “563”? Because there are less democrats than there are republicans. So your “poll” is biased and useless.

I find it amusing that the Dayton Daily News “Hand Picks” the opinion poll they want you to see, while most other opinion polls show Obama and Romney tied. Quinnipiac University Poll….SERIOUSLY??

Quinnipiac is constantly used by DDN, dispite it’s obvious left leaning polls. Interstingly, several other polls shows a generic republican beating BO, and Romney as even with him. Why arent they quoted?

Approval dipped “slightly”? From 49/45 to 46/50, an 8 point swing is “slight”?
