Bill passes to keep unemployment benefits flowing
State lawmakers took steps Tuesday to make sure 22,000 Ohioans do not lose their unemployment benefits after Jan. 28.
The Ohio Senate passed a bill Tuesday that will mean workers will qualify for an additional 20 weeks of unemployment checks. The bill moves to the House for concurrence on the changes.
The January 28 cut-off impacts workers who have been laid off for at least 18 months and are enrolled in the Extended Benefits program, which provides 13 to 20 weeks of extra benefits if a state has a high unemployment rate.
Since Ohio’s unemployment rate is over 8 percent, workers have qualified for an additional 20 weeks of benefits, which are paid by the federal government.

Be glad when the republicanss stop assisting big business in class warfare against the USA and supporting the building of other countries infrastructure and tax base while dismantling the USA’s in pursuit of MORE profit. I have worked since I was 16 until the Enron scandal. Corporate Greed along with Republican support is destroying this country. Passing this bill is the least they could do.

I agree with the unemployment extensions. Those who are trying to find employment certainly deserve further assistance. My areas of concern are those with OBama. He is asking for authority to combine and/or downsize departments at will. He is NOT trustworthy. He would use that authority to further his radical causes. To me, Obama is nothing more than a thief that has goals of weakening America by downsizing our military, by wishing harm to our friend Israel, by directing homeland security to monitor our conservative groups. He should have himself monitored! This November, I look forward to voting him out! Yes, for America! Obama no more President!

After reading that Speaker Boehner will not allow a vote on a bill that would address China and how she is causing our jobs to go over there to low paying jobs. I have always stood by Speaker Boehner and still do with this exception. He is afraid to rock the boat. It is time we insist our legislators make a move to straighten this trade agreement out! Obama is surely no help for this country! He will sink our country like the Titanic!

I was born and raised in Ohio and I’m currently unemployed. I have NEVER used drugs or alcohol my entire life. I have been very proactive in my search for work, inluding obtaining several Microsoft certifications and even hiring a professional to re-do my resume(money I couldn’t really afford but thought it was a great investment on the road to becoming re-employed). My unemployment income is only about 35% of what I’m accustomed to making working full time. For those who think unemployment is a preferred lifestyle… I don’t know anyone who would want to live on the small amount of unemployment I get. I’ve already lost my home and just about every thing else. I paid into the system for over 25 years and while I’m not proud of the fact that I’m unemployed, I don’t feel guilty for receiving the help. Being single and unmarried with no children I don’t qualify for any other type of assistance. My only other option would be to live on the streets. I’m very thankful for this program as it is the only thing right now keeping me from homelessness.

I’m not worried about my family being a burden to the tax payers of Ohio because I know that my husband and I have worked since our early teens and paid into this system that is designed to help those in need. I continue to pay into it every two weeks. And as soon as he is able to find work he will be paying into it just like everyone else does. Say the State of Ohio takes away unemployment. Do you think that they would lower your taxes? I don’t. I think that they would find another way to spend the money. My point is, not everyone collecting unemployment is lazy or a bum. Many people have been laid off from a company that they worked 20+ years at. Thought they would retire from. They put their heart and soul into this company only to be put out. Left hanging and wondering what they’re going to do. How they’re going to survive. They’re left with no options because there is nothing out there for them to go to. No where to start over. The only choice they have is unemployment and school to get a fresh start. For those people I am thankful that the option is available.

Times are unbelieveably difficult and I don’t find fault with people on unemployment. It would certainly reward them to be actively looking for employment. I am so frustrated with Obama and his anti-American procedures. Cutting military funding (most likely to use the savings for his campaign), keeping over 300,000 illegals here because of an earthquake that happened 10 years ago-(most likely thinking they will vote for him even though they are not supposed to have a right to vote if not a citizen of our country). I believe Congress should start impeachment hearings on Obama for giving missile information to Russia! Obama needs to be stopped now, before we vote him out. I am speaking of the fact that he is ruining our liberty and gaining control of things by backroom methods.

Christina…You will have to fork out the cash yourself, just like they have to do in Florida. I would rather work 2 or 3 jobs than to stay on unemployment and be a burden on the tax payers of Ohio. My mother worked 3 jobs to help me through College. The problem with people today is that they are lazy and just want hand outs from our government. But come on there are jobs out their and so what if you have to work 2 to make ends meet.

Yes, as far as I know. (I’ve never been unemployed and he obviously takes care of his unemployment benefits on his own.) However, my husband is applying for several jobs a week. He keeps track of who he submits applications and resumes to, who he hears back from and who he doesn’t. He doesn’t even get a response from most places.

Is it true that to maintain your unemployment benefits, all you have to do is go to the Ohio website and basically check a box that says “YES, I APPLIED FOR A JOB THIS WEEK.”? That’s what my bum nephew told me.

My husband has been on unemployement since August. We are very thankful that this has passed and will give him/us a chance for him to go back to school to learn a trade. Yes, he would qualify for a minimum wage job but we would pay more in childcare than he would earn so financially it doesn’t make since. I do work full time so we do not qualify for any type of assistance. And Dagwood, he AND I would be more than happy to submit to any drug test you’d like to pay for us to take.

A lot of the people that have been on unemployment benefits for over a year stay on it because they make more than going out and finding a job. This makes me sick. The state of Ohio needs to pass a law that anyone applying for welfare or unemployment needs to take a drug test. This will weed out the useless and the drug addicts living off of tax payers.

ohiodale: Personally I would not want to work for anyone who would not give someone who has been unemployed or underemployed a chance. You really have no idea how hard it is right now to get a job. None of us working in this Country any more feel like there is any security in any job., unless maybe you are in the Government Sector.

It’s unrealistic to believe the unemployment rate dropped by adding 200,000 jobs when we had 1,600,000 unemployment claims for December. 13 million accepted unemployment applicants in 2011 (actually claiming benefits) 1.6 million new jobs in 2011 (8 times more unemployment applicants than new jobs) Not to mention 21 million active college students and 24 million active unemployed. These numbers are dangerous and highly unsustainable.

TO ME: your post about when did the government extend the 1/7/12 deadline it was pushed back to 1/28/12 on December 23,2011 when the Senate and the House extended the unemployment by passing Bill 3630. I take it you do not read your updates on you unemployment page. Be grateful the government did this or we would all be in the welfare lines. I am not just sitting on my “duff” collecting unemployment either. I went back to school through the WIA program and go 4 nights a week to school and still continue to look for work. I just read that there are 4.2 persons looking for the same 1 job. With unemployment being what it is it going to take some time to recover. My suggestion to you is go back to school and get retrained for a position in another field. And read your updates on the Ohio Unemployment website.

Extending unemployment benefits will be a political “hot potato” this year. Nobody will vote against extending benefits, because doing so will be painted as being “heartless” by the other side. I just wish there was a way to police the current unemployment system better. It’s too easy to stay on unemployment. My college-educated 22-year old nephew has been on unemployment for over a year now. He’s a completely able-bodied person, but he refuses to get off his duff and take a job that’s “below his qualifications.” Instead, he plays video games all day and collects his check. I fear that is the work ethic of his generation.

I appreciate those who are out of work and hope this extension gives them time to find something they like and will support their needs. With Obama in office, I don’t know what he will pull next. Obama talking about giving missile information to Russia sounds extremely anti-American to me. Russia will then sell it to Iran and other Islamic groups for oil. Obama seems to be heading for charges of treason!
