Santorum leads in Ohio primary, poll says
Former U.S. Senator Rick Santorum surged into the lead position in the Ohio GOP presidential primary, drawing support from 36 percent of the likely Republican primary voters, while former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney follows with 29 percent, according to a new poll released Wednesday by Quinnipiac University.
Meanwhile, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich pulls support from 20 percent of Ohio Republican voters and U.S. Rep. Ron Paul of Texas comes in fourth with 9 percent, the poll found.
But it is still a topsy-turvy race with half of the likely voters saying they could still change their minds.
Ohio’s presidential primary is March 6, part of ‘Super Tuesday’ when a dozen states make their picks.
The poll found that in a head-to-head match ups the general election President Barack Obama would win Ohio against any of the Republican candidates: Obama 46 percent, Romney 44 percent; Obama 47 percent, Santorum 41 percent; Obama 50 percent, Gingrich 38 percent.
Quinnipiac University also found that adding U.S. Sen. Rob Portman of Cincinnati to the Republican ticket would not help the GOP win Ohio in the general election.
Peter Brown of Quinnipiac University Polling Institute said Santorum appears to be enjoying a bump from his earlier primary wins in Missouri, Colorado and Minnesota but it’s unclear whether that momentum will fizzle.
Not only is Romney trailing Santorum in Ohio but for the first time more Ohio voters view him unfavorably than favorably, Brown said.
“His pattern in the earlier primary states has been to use his money advantage to run a large number of negative ads on his biggest challenger. But doing so now risks further increasing Romney’s own unfavorables as a side effect of throwing the mud himself. Yet, Romney may feel the need to raise questions about the lesser-known Santorum in the eyes of GOP voters,” Brown said.
Meanwhile, in Ohio’s hotly contested U.S. Sen. race, Democrat incumbent Sherrod Brown leads Republican Josh Mandel 48 percent to 35 percent, the poll found. Brown, who is seeking a second term, enjoys a 47 percent job approval rating, the poll found.
From Feb. 7 to Feb. 12, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,421 registered voters on cell phones and land lines, including 553 Republican primary voters. The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.6 percentage points on the general election questions and 4.2 percentage points on primary questions.

America is such a wonderful country that has gone off in the wrong direction with industry taking production to other countries. That is not a patriotic thing to do! To be as we wish, to think, to worship- all of the freedoms! Yes, we can be prejudice if we want, we can smoke if we want in spite of the politically correct busy bodies. With OBama in office, everything is at risk! He has shady characters in the White House reaching out through the internet, through policies- to control us as Obama wishes. The nuts he sends to my childs school should be warned to stay out of his lunch box. I decide what my child will eat and I will come talk with you in a matter of fact manner! Santorum or any of the conservatives will be just fine. Obama, you’re out!

I have had it with Obama! He has tons of money given by marxists like George Soros and he has other big donors, too. They want all of the control that comes with Obama and the weakening of our military so we will progressively become open for attack. Santorum is a decent man that will receive my support if he is the one. I think the movers should be at the White House to prepare to move the Obamas back to Chicago. Obama is an embarrassment to America and not worthy of the Presidency!

@Wayne 2:47 am.. How dare you call us tea partiers racist! I understand the plight of our black Americans.. As a former visiting nurse in the black community, I cried tears of joy with them upon getting their first black president. But Obama doesn’t know the first thing about fiscal responsibility. And how dare he go into Europe and apologise for our country. In my eyes, that makes him a traitor. I fear for this country if we have him for another 4 years, which may very well happen.

I like Santorum and Newt. I’ll even vote for Romney. At this point, I’m desperate to get Obama out of the White House. I have a sick feeling if he stays in there for another 4 years, the US will never be the same again. We cant deal with his spending anymore. Dont be fooled by the so called improvements in the unemployment rate either. The liberal media will do whatever it takes to fudge those numbers. We need to take this country back and keep this guy from taxing businesses and wealthy people (who create jobs). Obama has no clue and is easily the worst president this country has ever seen.

Historian…that’s funny..you should call yourself Propagandist…My post clearly refers to “deep thinkers” like you too. I don’t have the time to watch Fox News..but its clear your “education” comes from msnbc, huffpo and sites of that ilk, but very little independent reading or research. You fall-back to the tried and tested liberal attack points. Fox News? how original! Think for yourself, if you can.

If you take the time to look at the big picture of life on Earth, you might understand why younger people, and I at 64, will be voting for Ron Paul. Go to YouTube and listen to Carl Sagan…”Pale Blue Dot”. Continuing with the status quo will not benefit humanity. We have to become a world of logical and compassionate thinkers.

After reading the comments I acknowledge that all candidates have their flaws. Whatever their flaws anyone of them will be better than Obama. These Obama supporters have blinders on thinking he will make life better for America. I have never seen an American President behave as Obama. To work to get rid of our military support such as our nuke missiles suggests he wants to open our country up for attack. His obvious favor of Muslims over Israel is not a good trait. Obama is a loser and must be a one term President. WE THE PEOPLE must work to get him out at all costs. He has General Motors and their union on his side along with his Chicago thug buddies. OBama gone in 2012!

Back and Forth….up and down and round and round. Since the election of 2000 America has been on a very nasty political ride. Like being on the Beast roller coster at Kings Island. From the day the Republicans stormed the building during the vote count in a physical assault down in Florida, they have been bad actors in everyway ever since. With their veiled racist , Birther and Tea Party movements they act out of desperation to try to control a world in which they are mere players, verses the Puppet masters they used to be. They have lost their grip on reality on the way…

Joane… Again, you are wrong.. He did NOT quit to avoid being thrown out. I know why he quit and it is none of your business.. He quit AFTER being reelected.. The reason he quit was very personal and had nothing to do with politics..(although the fact that he did not have the political support did somewhat influence , it was personal and none of our business). Mitt is NOT conservative, Rick is socially conservative, but not fiscally conservative. Ron is fiscally conservative, but his foreign policy scares me..Newt’s record shows he is most conservative. NONE of them are without flaws. But everyone of them is better than Obama, and I will vote for the winner

@Teresa-1/97 Newt agreed to pay a fine of $300,000 for ethics violations and his own statement was that he admitted he had “engaged in conduct that did not reflect creditably on the House of Representatives.” You are technically correct that Newt was not technically “thrown” out by his own party. He quit to avoid being thrown out. He is without an ounce of integrity. Learn to spell!

@Joanie 11:54 am.. Get your facts right! Newt was NEVER thrown out for ethics violations. He was reelected, but quit for other reasons. Also, a CNN report, a video, of 1999 explained that Newt was exonerated on all ethic charges. Also, Lindsey Graham, one of those responsible for an attempted coup to get Newt out, recently stated on Greta that he was wrong to do that, and he understnds so much more than he did back then.. You can see both videos online.. Stop your lieing!

I was in college in Pittsburgh when Santorum was elected Senator. I saw first hand how he screwed the common folks that elected him, sued a local school district to pay for his kids’ tuition at an elite “private” school in Washington DC, and spent government money to line the pockets of his campaign contributors. It is noteworthy that Santorum LOST his second re-election bid by a landslide of near 70-30%. If Santorum wins the nomination, I WILL vote for Obama.

It would be nice, for full disclosure’s sake, to include how Ron Paul would fair against Obama. It’s in the results, but for some mysterious reason, Quinnipac didn’t include it in its press release, and this blogger didn’t take the extra minute to scroll down their web browser and find it. Obama 46 Paul 40 So against Obama, Paul is doing about the same as Santorum and better than Gingrich.

NBK will vote for Obama because he only does what his union instructs him to do. He doesn’t really understand why, but knows he doesn’t have to. He will explain it with false leftist talking points. If challenged he will respond with name calling. Your post sounds like a typical union newsletter. You have captured many of their rope-a-dope talking points. You are what they refer to when they use the term…Dumb masses.

Ohio has shown moments of incredible stupidity ie electing kasich, boehner, portman, dewine and some moments of intelligence ie voting down sb5. So will Ohio voters be really stupid and vote for anyone with an R beside their name or will they wake up and realize that republicans do a great job for millionaires, billionaires and special interest groups but are the worst thing in the world for middle class, working men and women and the enviornment. There is no difference between romney, santorum or any of the other clowns, we would end up with the same corrupt failed government we got from bush and out of republicans for the last 30 years.

Newt for 2012!!! I am tired of the dirty politics in Washington and want someone who won’t lie and cheat the American people of their Freedom rights for President. Newt has the experience and knowledge of what Presidency is all about at least he won’t be LEARNING ON THE JOB as Obama is doing no former experience.

Mitt has the right experience to lead this country and he has been the only candidate from both parties to discuss the need to make Social Security more sustainable. The Campaigner in Chief will not stick his neck out the even say the word “entitlement reform” for fear it will interfere with his reelection. BHO thinks his BIG FAT budget and deficits reductions can be done simply by taxing everyone and eveything. The USA needs a business person with a combination of financial and government experience. Mitt 2012!

Whoever I vote for it will certainly NOT be Obama. Maybe I would like him more if I had someone else’s money to spend and lived inside a vaction bubble like him. I bet if he does get re elected first thing he will do is drop a few million a tax-payer money for a weeks vacation on Martha’s Vineyard, after only three days of being back to work.

Usually you can click somewhere in the article and see the actual questions, but they didn’t do that this time. You can find the poll by going to Quinnipiac University polling web site if you want to see what questions were asked. @ Teresa-Newt was in Washington and his own party threw him out for ethics problems. He can be President of the Moon, not the US.

what..is it strange that a left leaning, pro union, democratic mouthpiece like the DDN would rely on a self-admitted liberal poll. The article says they interviewed 1,421 registered voters and only 553 were republican. It’s also a safe bet that the questions were asked in a way designed to get the answer they desire. They don’t even try to hide their bias anymore.

These polls are HEAVILY skewed to DEMS. They also are a reflection Obama is bringing out union cross-overs to vote for Santorum, as he fears running against Romney. The whole cultural war issues are a head-fake by Obama, to wear down Mitt, while trying to pump up Santorum. Santorum lost Pa by 20 pts, and was in the state only 3 weeks out of the whole year. He stuck the state with a $65,000 bill for his kids online school system, as the state considered him a non resident. We aren’t electing Pope in Chief. Santorum will not win Ohio, and will not win in general. Romney and Obama are tied in Ohio by this poll. Don’t fall for the skewed polling folks.

To all of you ladies against Newt because of his personal life, I ask you. If you had a child with a brain tumor, would you want the BEST neurosurgeon even though you knew he was a two-timer? Of course you would. I watched all 3 speeches at the CPAC. Newts was the ONLY one that was all about his plan. Ricks was about his sudden surge. Mits was trying to convince us he is a conservative. I am supporting Newt. He will shake up Washington.

I like Santorum and find him to be down to earth, wanting to get us back to our rights, strong supporter of defense, cut waste- just a great person. I find this poll hard to believe that Obama is still so high with the numbers. They say Northern Ohio are strong Obama people. I don’t understand it. He is corrupt, his associates are radical, he wants to micro-manage us, wants to weaken our military, everything I don’t want. I want Santorum first, Gingrich second, Romney third and NO Obama!
