Ohio State gets $500,000 electric vehicle grant

The Ohio State University is looking to accelerate the electric vehicle industry in Ohio.

The university’s Center for Automotive Research (CAR) on Monday, July 27, secured state approval for the first $500,000 of a $3 million Ohio Third Frontier grant designed to develop market-viable commercial electric vehicles, including buses and trucks.

The electric vehicles represent a potential growth rate of 17.1 percent annually, according to Ohio State officials.

Ohio companies Vanner Inc. and American Electric Power, along with SMTMicroelectronics of Michigan and Fil-Mor Express of Minnesota, are collaborating with CAR on the initiative, which is projected to create more than 900 new clean-energy jobs over the next five years.

The grant will fund a new testing facility inside CAR with the goal of speeding up the conversion from gas to electric, according to university officials.

Ohio State dedicates more than 300 researchers to the nation’s quest for environmentally sustainable energy solutions that promote economic growth in Ohio.

Telsa motors already has an electric car that gets 300 miles per charge, goes from 0 to 60mph in a time that is faster than most gas cars. The car is both stylish( I think it looks rather cool). Also the car can charge overnight on 220v and in 2 hours with 440v. Granted the car costs like 100k but that price will come down once it can become produced more efficiently and in greater numbers. Lets spend are tax money( or bailout money) on something that would actually help the average America citizen.

It’s good to see so many industries and organizations getting highly involved in developing and producing electric cars, huge solar electric generators, etc. Some countries are already supplying electricity to entire cities, with giant, efficient, solar power facilities. Tesla is the company named after the amazing scientist who invented electric generators in his mind and made working models without without any flaws. Another, smaller and inexpensive electric car is already being produced, (Not sure whether it is in Japan or Spain.) And the new Toyota Prius has the option of a solar roof that runs the A/C!

Just one question - how are these electric cars supposed to be recharged after Obama finishes shutting down all the coal fired electric plants (where the VAST majority of our electricity comes from) ? Hmmmmm ?

Sounds like a lot of hot air. 900 jobs created for only $3 million? I DOUBT IT! AEP has $3M in pocket change. And tell us some specifics. “Speed up conversion”? What’s that mean?!?

300 researchers does NOT mean 300 jobs ! I’m sure most are UNPAID STUDENTS doing the job for their degrees like it always is in universities.
