UD event to address health care for poor, uninsured

As President Barack Obama prepares to sign the final piece of landmark health care legislation, area doctors and students on Saturday, March 27, will discuss the issue as it affects low-income and uninsured residents in the Miami Valley.

The University of Dayton premedical program and Miami Valley Hospital are sponsoring the inaugural Health Care Symposium from noon to 6 p.m. at the UD Science Center.

The event is open to all local physicians and UD students.

The symposium offers two program tracks for students and doctors, giving medical professionals a chance to improve their understanding of health care issues for the uninsured, and allowing students to network with doctors to explore the career of health care.

The organizers of the symposium chose the theme of health care for the poor and uninsured because of the current national focus on health care reform and access.

Meeting the medical needs for the uninsured is a mounting challenge, said Dr. Mike Craig, a UD alumnus and retired Miami Valley Hospital physician.

“We don’t have a county hospital in our area, so the private hospitals have to take care of the needs of the indigent, which often comes at a considerable amount of cost,” Craig said.

Dr. Scott Morris, the keynote speaker, will address the growing concern of health care access. Morris is founder and executive director of Church Health Center in Memphis, Tenn., the nation’s largest faith-based clinic serving working uninsured people and their families.

The symposium is free to UD students. Physician registration is $50. To register, call (937) 229-3545 or click here.

Though we don’t have a hospital for the less fortunate, Miami Valley Hospital considers itself as such for they take most of the folk who are on welfare

Poor people are lazy

Not all “poor” are lazy…. Just as not all “rich” work… Many times “poor” are actually working but not able to get good paying jobs, they work hard and try to better themselves but are “trapped”, unable to bring themselves above the waterline to breath. Regardless of whether someone is working or not, poor or rich….all need medical attention, especially emergency care. Many who are “poor” wouldn’t be so down on their luck if they could find a way to be healthier, then they could get better paying or healthier jobs.

I am stunned by the sweeping generalization of someone writing “poor people are lazy”.I am glad I do not know who you are. Generalizations are great if you do not want to look at facts and real people.

What you said about MVH, would that include joint replacement? A person with no insurance is in dire need of surgery but unable to get it. If the answer is yes blog it and I will give you contact info. or vice versa. Person does not qualify for Medicaid and HCAP will cover some but not all of the cost.

You have to look back in time. In this country, it is hard to be “trapped in poverty.” What were they doing in school? Goofing off and partying while the “nerds” studied and worked hard? Did they have a family before they were established and could afford it? This country has endless opportunities, opportunies many in other countries can only dream about. It’s a shame that people throw it all away.

The Good Neighbor House on Patterson in downtown Dayton, provides free or reduced rate medical, dental, and optical for the WORKING POOR (families that fall below the national poverty level). They will not help anyone on gov assistance. All the under-served/working poor need to do is get a referral from their church, or a local social service agency. A hand-up, not a hand-out.
