I would like to thank the govenor for his support of Education Reform. The House passed the Budget by a vote of 233-193, Ohio Congressional Representatives who should be commended for supporting our students by voting yes were John Boccieri, Steve Driehaus, Marcia Fudge, Marcy Kaptur, Mary Jo Kilroy, Tim Ryan, and Zack Space. Shame on the following Ohio Congressional Representatives who voted against: Dennis Kucinich, Steve Austria, John Boehner, Jim Jordan, Steve LaTourette, Bob Latta, Pat Tiberi, and Michael Turner. Congresswoman Jean Schmidt did not cast a vote. The Senate approved the Budget by a vote of 53-43. Senator Sherrod Brown voted Yea while Senator George Voinovich voted Ney.

It’s ill-advised and extremely dangerous to fund on-going education systems with one-time grant money. This is the reason that, for all its faults, a school funding system based on the property tax is so stable. No other source — including taxes on business, incomes or sales — is so stable. While Ohio should “go for the gold” with any competitive federal grants, PLEASE DO NOT FUND ON-GOING SCHOOL OPERATIONS THIS WAY.
