Lakota West senior left-hander Nathan Smith signed a national letter-of-intent with Furman University over the weekend.
As a junior, Smith went 11-1 with a 2.43 ERA — his lone loss coming in the state semifinals against Lakewood St. Edward.
Smith follows in the footsteps of West product Matt Klinker, who pitched at Furman and is now in the Cincinnati Reds organization.
Lakota West senior Michael Hart will continue his swimming career at Georgia Tech. He signed a national letter-of-intent on Monday, Nov. 17.
Hart also considered Louisville, Pittsburgh, Columbia, Ohio State and Calvin.
Hart will be a four-year starter for the Firebirds. His seventh-place finish at state in the 100 butterfly as a junior highlights his decorated high school career. He holds the school record in the 100 fly (50.89) and is a member of two school-record relay teams.
Hart plans to major in chemical engineering.
Just got word from Lakota district athletic director Stu Eversole that the proposal from Atrium Medical Center will be voted on by the school board at Monday night’s meeting.
The meeting begins at 7 p.m. at the Central Office.
Atrium has offered to give Lakota $48,500 each year for 20 years in order to place synthetic turf on its two high school football fields.
“I’ve got a good feeling about it,” Eversole said. “It would be a great thing for the community.”
At the Oct. 13 board meeting, the board wanted to wait until this Monday’s meeting in order to get a feel for how the community felt about it. There has been an online survey at Lakotaonline.com for the past month, and Eversole said that 95 to 97 percent are in favor of it.
Lakota West senior Brendan McNamara has verbally committed to swim for the University of Kentucky.
McNamara also considered Ball State and Purdue.
“They are a program looking to become a big-time contender and compete with powerhouse teams,” McNamara said on the school’s Web site. “The coaches are very experienced and know what they are doing.”
McNamara, entering his fourth season on varsity, finished 19th at state in the 500 freestyle last season.
McNamara plans on studying psychology or political science.
The early signing period began Wednesday, and runs until next Wednesday, Nov. 19.
Here’s a list of athletes at Lakota East who are signing with Division I schools: Matt Zompero (baseball, Eastern Kentucky); Luke Giddens (baseball, Cincinnati); Liz Tabor (swimming, Pittsburgh); Danielle Graham (volleyball, Georgia Southern); David Tepe (golf, UC); and Aidan Javed (golf, Xavier).
Mason High’s boys and girls water polo teams both advanced to regionals, and with that came individual recognition for some of their players.
Earning first-team, all-state honors was Kelly Sullivan. Second-team, all-state selections went to Andy Supronas, Caitlyn Stewart and Nisha Sachar.
Chad Griffiths and Meg Roussos made honorable mention all-state.
This is the first day of the early signing period, which ends next Wednesday, Nov. 19.
Mason will have one big signing ceremony on Feb. 4, 2009 — which is the same day when football recruits can sign their national letter-of-intent.
Two more Comets that we were not aware of will sign with Division I schools in the next week: seniors Alexis Nelson (golf, Wisconsin) and Adrianna Piontek (lacrosse, Cincinnati).
Senior golfer Alli Wehrman will play collegiately at Northern Kentucky University.
