McKnight chooses Bowling Green

Earlier today, Sept. 8, Middletown senior wide receiver Nick McKnight verbally committed to play football at Bowling Green State University.

McKnight, a 6-foot-3, 200-pound receiver/cornerback, leads the Middies in receiving with three receptions for 104 yards and two touchdowns through the first two games of the season.

McKnight also had offers from Air Force Academy, as well as other Mid-American Conference schools Ball State, Ohio and Kent State.

In July, MHS quarterback Caleb Watkins committed to Bowling Green, which also has three former Middies — Chris Wright, Chip Robinson and Blaec Walker — on its roster.

‘Energy’ surrounds Fairfield football program

Fairfield High’s football team is just four days removed from its first victory of the season, a 14-7 triumph over Piqua.

“There’s lots of energy,” first-year Tribe coach Aaron Fitzstephens. “The kids are seeing the rewards of their hard work. They bought in from the very beginning. The energy definitely is up.”

The Indians (1-1) host Winton Woods (1-1) this Friday. The Warriors knocked off Fairfield 28-6 last year.

“They’re really good,” Fitzstephens said. “Offensively, they’re extremely talented at all positions. They have a big offensive line. They’ve scored 101 points in two games.”

Behind senior QB Dominique Brown, a UC recruit, Winton Woods runs the triple-option offense.

Lakota East football seeks first win

Lakota East High’s football team will take its 0-2 record to La Salle (2-0) this Friday night, Sept. 11.

The Thunderhawks fell to Glen Este 19-14 last week in their home-opener.

“They’re disappointed, obviously,” East coach Greg Bailie said. “We had a good day of practice (Monday). They approached it really well, and hopefully it will carry over to today and the rest of the week.”

The Lancers have defeated Oak Hills (7-3) and Covington Catholic (44-35) to start the season. They won last year’s meeting with East, 13-10.

“They’re good,” Bailie said. “They’ve got a good quarterback (Andrew Kummer), and they won a game with defense and won a game with offense. It’s a case of where in two games, they’ve done what they’ve needed to do.”

Recap of West’s Hicks conference call

Lakota West senior OLB Jordan Hicks held his second media conference call this morning, Sept. 8, and here are the highlights from the 15-minute session:

-Hicks will officially visit Ohio State this weekend when the Buckeyes host USC. Hicks also has an official visit lined up with Texas on Oct. 10 vs. Colorado. He’s also working on setting one up with Florida.

“I’m going up there (to OSU) and I want to have a good time,” Hicks said. “Get a feel for the campus, get to know some people and just get a feel for how it’d be like if I was there (on game day).”

-Hicks rushed for 27 yards on two fake punt carries in last Friday’s win over Lancaster. I asked coach Larry Cox if Hicks will get a chance to play some offense in the coming weeks.

“He’s just sitting here looking at me saying, ‘That’s what I’m talking about,’” Cox said. “We’re starting to work as an offensive unit to get him touches in the game. Coming out with his back problems (in preseason), we wanted to get him healthy first. That role will begin to expand as he gets more comfortable. We’ll find ways to expand the offense and get him the ball.”

All Hicks said about the possibility of playing offense: “I love it.”

-Cox also said senior TE Alex Smith took his official visit to Wisconsin this past weekend. It looks like Smith’s decision will come down to Wisconsin, North Carolina and Cincinnati, who he originally committed to in February.

Cox said Smith is “active” for this week after dressing but not playing against Lancaster because of disciplinary reasons.
