‘The real Firebirds’
Friday night’s tilt between Lakota West and Kettering Fairmont was the battle of the Firebirds, as both teams nicknames are just that.
And for the third straight year, West knocked off Fairmont, this time 35-7. The last two years the scores were 24-9 and 20-0.
The win prompted some West players to proclaim after the game, “We are the real Firebirds,” as they held up their West Firebirds towels.
“I know for a fact they wanted to get us,” said senior safety Obi Nwankwo, who had a 15-yard INT return for a TD. “We really needed this win. We’re trying to make a run to the playoffs and trying to make a name for ourselves. This is like a perfect start.”
West (2-1) hosts Hamilton (1-2) next Friday, Sept. 18, to kick off Greater Miami Conference play.
