Lakota West High’s football program has been getting around 80 players in attendance for its weight lifting sessions this summer, coach Larry Cox said.

The Firebirds had about 55 at this morning’s session, with players already leaving for vacation with the holiday weekend coming up. Cox gave the players Friday off.

Also, West had 14 seniors at Ohio State’s senior camp on Friday, June 26. One of those players was TE Alex Smith, who committed to UC and then declared last month he is reopening the recruiting process.

Cox said the 14 players from West were the most from any other high school represented at the camp.

“(The recruiting) starts to calm down after this week,” Cox said. “Once we head into July, now we put recruiting behind and get Lakota West where it needs to be.”

Fairfield football coach Aaron Fitzstephens says the summer is ‘going great’.

The first year coach had 107 kids at the Indians first workout in June.

“We knew we’d have a lot with a big senior class,” Fitzstephens said. “But, that exceeded our expectations.”

High school teams have 10 days to use during the summer for workouts or practices and Fitzstephens is saving the final nine days to use just before the start of two-a-days in July. Those days will be used to implement the new offense (multiple-I) and defense (50 slant angle).

“We used the one day early to get a feel for the kids as a staff,” Fitzstephens said. “We will start July 20 and try to have the kids where we want them and where they can be successful.”

Fairfield has struggled the past three seasons winning only 2 games, including just one last season.

“The program is going in the right direction,” Fitzstephens said. “From the kids to the coaches to the parents, we are all on the same page.”

Fairfield High boys basketball coach Tim Austing is in the midst of his first summer at the controls.

The Indians play Wilmington at 5 p.m. Wednesday, July 1, in the first round of the Hamilton Summer League tournament.

Austing said about 15 to 20 players have played in the league, as he is trying to find out who’s committed to helping turn the program around.

Guys who he’s been impressed with are: juniors Ryan Riga, Josh Edwards and Jordan Ammon; sophomore James Turner; and senior Willis Fleming, a transfer from Roger Bacon.

The big question mark is senior guard Phil Harris, who averaged 20.3 points per game a year ago before being ruled ineligible.

“He’s been around and done some stuff,” Austing said of Harris.

Fairfield is working out four days a week — three weight lifting sessions and another day of shooting and playing.

“My No. 1 thing is not to change the culture but create the culture I want,” Austing said. “I’d rate this summer as a B or even an A. It’s been really great.”

Kings High School has found a replacement for departed varsity swim coach Brad Isham. Pending approval by the school board, Anne Albert will take over the reins of the program. Albert has served the last seven years as the varsity assistant and head junior high swim coach at Kings.

<![CDATA[Mason High junior-to-be Zach Wills continues to impress this summer.

Wills captured the 3,000-meter race this morning, June 30, at the World Youth Track & Field Trials in Ypsilanti, Mich.

Wills’ time of 8 minutes, 27.19 seconds was nearly 16 seconds better than runner-up Erik Olson.

Wills will now have to wait and see if he is selected to be on Team USA for the 6th IAAF World Youth Championships in Bressanone, Italy, on July 8-12.

The selection process is at 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 1, and both Wills and Mason boys cross country coach Tom Rapp are confident he will be picked since he has a qualifying time and won this morning’s race.

Earlier this month, Wills was second in the two-mile race at the Nike Outdoor Nationals and also won his second straight state title in the 3,200.
