With Greg Bailie resigning as head football coach at Lakota East on Tuesday, Nov. 17, that leaves Lakota West’s Larry Cox as the longest-tenured coach in the Greater Miami Conference.

Bailie came to Lakota in 1993 and took over the East program in ‘97 when the school split into East and West. Cox has been at West since the school’s inception.

“I’ve got a lot of respect for Greg,” Cox said. “Greg ran a clean program. His teams were always fundamentally sound. You were going to have to beat them to win the game. They weren’t going to give you anything. I felt like he was definitely a respected opponent.”

Nearly two weeks into official preseason practice, Austing has 17 players — made up of sophomores, juniors and seniors — each day for varsity practice.

Six of them are seniors: Justin McCray, Arryn Chenault, Phil Harris, Justin Baker, Josh Scott and newcomer Willis Fleming.

A year ago, Harris averaged 20.3 points per game before missing the second half of the season due to academic reasons.

“The players worked hard in the weight room and in the gym during the offseason,” Austing said. “There are a lot of new faces on the team. We are working hard to improve and implement a new system. The kids are working hard and are excited to get started but there is still a lot of work to be done.”

The Indians — who were 5-16, 1-13 GMC last year — host Roger Bacon and Loveland in a scrimmage this weekend.
