Kjos, a 2006 Lakota East High graduate, announced on Wednesday, March 10, that he has decided to step away from football because of recurring injuries.

A 6-foot-2, 205-pound wide receiver, Kjos registered 11 catches for 103 yards and a touchdown for his career. This past season, he appeared in 10 games (three starts) and had nine receptions for 88 yards and a score.

Kjos missed all of the 2007 season due to a back injury.

Rick Haynes was picked in late December to turn around the Lakota East High football program.

It appears he’s off to a good start.

About 85 to 90 players are participating in the offseason workout program, and Haynes said that “things are going great. The kids are working hard.”

Haynes said in January that he hired all of his assistant coaches except one — a wide receivers coach.

That hiring has been put on hold as Haynes is “just trying to find the right fit,” he said.

The final chapter of Robert Shepherd’s remarkable four-year wrestling career at Mason High was written this past weekend at the state meet.

Shepherd finished third at 140 pounds after winning the 135-pound title last year. He placed sixth at 112 pounds as a freshman.

Shepherd ended this season with a 43-1 record and his career mark at 152-18, including a 70-match win streak that was snapped on Friday night, March 5, in Columbus.

Shepherd — who will wrestle collegiately at Princeton — will graduate as the Comets’ all-time wins leader, 32 more than 2006 graduate Brian Porter, who is second with 120 victories.

Official softball practice began on Monday, March 8, for the 2010 season — the last for Mason High coach Brian Castner.

Castner was named the Comets’ new football coach back in November, thus making this softball season his final one at the helm.

“Everything is going great,” Castner said. “I am really finding out what the old saying means, ‘You are only as good as the people around you.’ Right now we are really good. I love my staff and our Mason kids.”

And it hasn’t affected his football responsibilities.

With softball practice in the afternoons, the Mason football squad is in the midst of an eight-week commitment workout schedule that runs from 5:30 to 7 a.m. every day.
