February 2006

American Idol song choice lacking with the girls tonight.

In past seasons I never really understood the whole song choice obsession with the judges, but I felt it tonight. A bit of advice Idols, don’t choose songs because you love them; choose songs the audience will love.

I am a huge fan of Katharine McPhee, but how boring was that? I didn’t recognize the song and I’m pretty sure that anyone under the age of 30 didn’t either. Yes, you can assume I’m under 30, I just won’t tell you if you’re right or wrong.

Kinnik Sky. Not a fan, did nothing for me. She’s gone.

Do they choose their own clothes each week? If so, Lisa Tucker needed an intervention tonight. Her outfit did not match the song and as strange as it sounds I honestly think it distracted me. When I ran it back and closed my eyes, she had a couple off notes, but overall, not too bad.

Sultry voice, perfect song choice and an outfit just tight and revealing enough to say “and I look hot too! Melissa McGhee was great and I imagine most of the male viewers would agree. Ace…stop that smiling at her!

Heather Cox hit a couple notes that were waaaaaay off and I watched the faces of the other girls to see if any of them grimaced as I did. She could go away this week and I wouldn’t be unhappy at all.

I was excited when I heard that Brenna Gethers was going to do Last Dance by Donna Summers. I thought this would finally silence her critics. As someone who remembers dancing to this at high school (okay, I’m a few days older than 30) I was disappointed that she didn’t even exude the enthusiasm that we used to feel when it came on in the car.

There’s no doubt that Paris Bennett has a voice. I just want to see her act her age and have more fun. In prior seasons Paris, people have been eliminated for this. Listen to the judges, not Mom and Grandma sittin’ in the audience!

Ayla Brown. Everyone wants me to love her but I just can’t quite get there. She did okay and didn’t hit too many bad notes but I didn’t feel it, just too mechanical. Nice, but not great. Simon hit the nail on the head.

Who doesn’t just love Kellie Pickler? So cute. But please, don’t do another Bonnie Raitt song sweetie.

Did anyone else notice that Mandisa dropped her last name? Wonder what that’s all about? I love her, I love her voice, but this was not her best night.

Favorite performances tonight were smoking hot Melissa and Lisa with a bad wardrobe choice.

So folks, who goes on Thursday? I predict Brenna, Kinnik, or Heather. And girls, girls, girls, you’ve got to bring it next week. Overall, not a super memorable performance in the bunch.

I cannot imagine that the guys cannot improve on this!

A new Season new players - same old Donald

The Apprentice 5 has started this season with much of the same fan fare as in the past… we see Donald trying to impress the Apprentice candidates with his wealth. Everyone boards Donald’s jet as he tells the candidates that someday they too will be as wealthy he is. Really, how many times do we need to see his expensive transportation?

The show is feeling a little stale… Some of the candidates appear to have been chosen just for their caustic factor even if they have an ivy league education. While that can make for outstanding drama, I’m ready for a little more! I’d really love it if Donald and Mark Burnett would take a lesson from Project Runway… there’s a great show, with real creative challenges and drama too!

I’ll still watch this season of the Apprentice but I want more!

Perhaps, after this season, Martha will come back and fire the Donald!

‘Amazing Race’ at starting line

One round of reality shows is wrapping up while the next are on the launchpad.

One of the best, The Amazing Race takes off on its ninth cycle with a two-hour premiere at 9 tonight (Feb. 28, 2006).

After the fall’s tame family edition, I’m more than ready for the two-member teams — each with a ‘pre-existing relationship, as CBS says in what sounds like a reference to a dread disease — taking shots at each other and their opponents. CBS promos promise this go-round is back to basics, spanning five continents, non-stop action and tougher tasks.

Study up on the teams and comment on who you think will win. Seems to me BJ and Tyler are either going to be a lot of fun pretending to be modern-day Cheech and Chong or we’ll pay to have them eliminated. I do think they’ll play smarter than their profile would indicate.

Tonight’s big question, however, is how badly the second hour of American Idol will clobber the first hour of Race.

‘Apprentice 5’ - Triple the Trump - Starts Monday

The Apprentice. Donald has been making headlines this past week blasting Martha Stewart for her show’s performance. Is all the noise Donald has been creating recently related to the start of season 5 of the Apprentice? Hmmm??

The cast will include a Russian, an Englishman and a MENSA member ranging in age from 22 to 38. Their professional backgrounds include a sticker entrepreneur, appellate attorney, and a psychotherapist.

The Donald’s daughter Ivanka and eldest son Donald Jr will fill in for Carolyn and George when they are away.

We are also promised “… triple the Trump…” this season. I’m sure this is referring to the addition of his children to the mix, but we all know about the Donald’s ego.

The Apprentice 5 will air on NBC, Monday, February 27, 9-10 p.m.

Here is a list of the Candidates:

  • Allie (Columbia, S.C.) Medical Sales Manager
  • Andrea (San Diego, Calif.) Sticker Company Owner
  • Brent (Fort Lauderdale, Florida) Attorney
  • Charmaine (Nashville, Tenn.) Real Estate Consultant
  • Dan (Miami, Fla.) Clothing Company Owner
  • Jose “Pepi” (Miami, Fla.) Attorney
  • Lee (Brooklyn, N.Y.) Business Analyst
  • Leslie (Houma, La.) Realtor
  • Michael (New York, N.Y.) Management Consultant
  • Roxanne (Austin, TX) Appellate Attorney
  • Sean (London, England) Recruitment Consultant
  • Stacy (Long Island, N.Y.) Criminal Defense Attorney
  • Summer (Huntington Beach, California) Restaurant Owner
  • Tammy (Edison, N.J.) Wealth Manager
  • Tarek (New Bedford, MA) Hi-Tech Manager
  • Theresa (Barrington, IL) Psychotherapist

First results show and I’m already upset with America!

People, people, people. I’m so disappointed. Patrick Hall doesn’t get enough votes and the rocker off key fuzzy haired blonde cowboy from North Carolina (Bucky Covington) and the young and sorry folks, annoying Kevin Covais stay in? I record the show even when I can watch it live (for the instant replay action) and right now I am watching the show again and cannot believe someone who could actually sing didn’t make it to next round. Sorry piano man. I’m still a huge fan.

Please, I implore you, if you didn’t vote this week…stop that! Be patient. I have never had a problem voting if I wait about 15 minutes to call. Vote for multiple people, multiple times, just vote.

Okay, I’ll try to calm down to comment on the rest of those who left.

America had it right with opera star Stevie Scott and obnoxious Bobby Bennett. I’m a little surprised by Becky O’Donahue though. Not my favorite this week, but certainly better than Kinnik Sky. I don’t think the racy photo gossip had started last night to affect voting. And I’m not sure it would have mattered anyway. I will make another prediction though, and I promise I’m not being “catty,” in less than six months Becky and her sister will be naked in Playboy magazine.

I think I’ll be going into Idol withdrawal with several days before the next show. But then again, I kept last nights show and I can watch Ace, oh, I mean the show, over and over again until next week. By the way, I have a coworker who doesn’t think Ace has “it. ARE YOU KIDDING? Is there anyone else who would agree?

The guys throw down the gauntlet on American Idol & new scandal immerges.

First, the scandal. I heard on the radio this morning that Becky O’Donahue had some “racy” and some nude photos published a few years back AND quite a sexy layout in Maxim magazine with her twin sister! More to come.

The guys “brought it” last night, most of them anyway. I don’t know about you, but I solidified a couple favorites and discovered a few more. Once again, go to the AI website to see photos of the top 24 to refresh your memory.

Out the door should be Bucky Covington from North Carolina. I don’t get what the judges see in him. He seems like a real nice guy, but out of his league. Am I alone on this? Does anyone else see it that way?

Also, and don’t shoot me, little Kevin Covais needs to go. I know he warms Paula’s heart and that lisp makes him an endearing underdog, but it’s time he goes back to the real world. For many, many reasons he can’t hold a candle to this group.

My last negative comment…Bobby Bennett, dude…Copacabana? It’s a good song but he was awful. I totally agree with Simon, Barry Manilow was sitting in front of TV in pain.

So Will Makar is young and has a lot to learn, but if I were a teenager, I could see his poster on my bedroom wall. He’s so cute, charming and fun. Maybe not Idol material this year, but I hope he stays on a while to watch him grow as a performer. Kind of like Anthony Fedorov did last year, but even better.

Patrick Hall being first last night had it tough, but I really like him. Not the most memorable performance of the evening but I if he sticks to the ballads, I think he has staying power.

So my newly discovered favorite? Elliot Yamin. Not the most attractive guy, but he took me by surprise last night. Just a natural. It seems like singing is as natural as breathing for this guy.

Taylor Hicks. I have been an iffy fan. I like him, but he’s been a bit “out there for me. Last night wiped out any reservations about him making it to the Top 6 guys, or even the Top couple guys for me.

Then there is Ace Young. Ace. Aaaahhhhh. My heart’s a flutter and I replayed his performance a few more times than I am willing to admit. I’m such a girl. But it’s that X factor Simon talked about that makes me swoon…oh yeah, and he can sing. Heavy sigh.

Tonight’s elimination night. I’m on pins and needles. How about you? Who do you think is going tonight?

American Idol’s pretty girls get their first shot.

Before I get started, if you’re like me and can’t quite put all the names with the top 24 faces yet, I would suggest that you refer to the American Idol website so you can quickly remind yourself of who is who. Of course I remember my favorites, but there are still those that remain a little forgettable. But they are all so gorgeous; each in their own way.

I think the theme for the evening was nerves. Most of these girls have sung a cappella at one point or other in the competition and done it well, yet almost everyone suffered from “pitchiness or hit a horrific note or two. However, I applaud every one of them for having the guts to get on that stage in front of a live audience and millions of viewers all over the world.

That said if you are going to be an American Idol, you better get over that quick.

My absolute favorites of the evening (in no particular order) were the adorable Paris Bennett, audacious Brenna Gethers, the youngest Lisa Tucker, and my most favorite Katharine McPhee. This assessment is based on their voices and performances. Of course, who cannot just love Kelly Pickler based on being an overall sweetie pie? But she just didn’t bring it last night.

The two that I just want to see gone Thursday are Stevie Scott and Ayla Brown. It’s not that they don’t have potentially good voices; it’s something in their personalities that just drive me nuts. Maybe it’s Stevie’s “I’m a classically trained opera singer attitude or Ayla’s post performance “I just felt complete statement. Since retro is in, I’ll throw myself back to my college days “Gag me with a spoon might be an appropriate statement.

I wasn’t a big fan of Becky ODonahue’s version of Because the Night. Tough song to sing and she over performs the “sexy. Your gorgeous honey, you don’t have to work it that hard!

Speaking of gorgeous. There are some spectacularly pretty girls this year. Really captivating. Oh I can’t wait until the guys are on tonight.

‘Project Jay’ Life, Fashion and an Opinion on Everything

If you loved ‘Project Runway’ season one, be sure to catch ‘Project Jay’. Bravo is airing a documentary featuring Jay McCarroll the season one winner. The one hour special will catch us up on what happened to Jay after winning the competition, introduce us to his rural home town, meet some of his family, travel with him through the process of winning and see just what he’s been up to since he was crowned the winner.

Tonight, Jay was on the “Derek and Romaine Show”, a show on Sirius Radio, talking about the upcoming episode, the cast and finalist of current season of ‘Project Runway’, movie stars, Austin Scarlett, sex and sharing his opinions on just about everything else under the sun. Based on what he did and didn’t say, ‘Project Jay’ should be a fun hour of TV. One of the highlights of the show will include a melt down by Heidi Klum at the ‘Emmys’ award show and their interactions based on the dress.

Jay is so flamboyant and so quick witted that any editor should be able make this a highlight of the TV season.

The show airs Wednesday, February 22nd at 11:00 p.m. on Bravo TV

‘Project Runway’ plus ‘Survivor’ = ‘Style Me’ on WE’

Style Me - Campy Reality TV Fun

While flipping through the channels looking for something to watch, I ran across Style Me with Rachel Hunter. The idea behind the show is that super-model Rachel Hunter is looking for a new look and 12 hopefuls are competing for the chance to dress Rachel Hunter for a red carpet event and $10,000 cash.

Judges for the show, referred to as the Style Posse, are Rachel Hunter, Phillip Block and Milica Kaster.

The contestants are so over the top and just plain hilarious. With have names like Brittnie, Airic and Buick, you may get a sense of the flamboyant and ego embellished attitudes the contestants bring with them.

The show airs on WE Television Mondays at 10 p.m. and combines elements of Project Runway and Survivor into a snappy, interesting and entertaining half hour of television.

‘Project Runway’ - left me on pins and needles!

‘Project Runway’ - left me on pins and needles!

For those of you who haven’t watched this week’s episode (FEB 15), it was clearly the one of the best of this season. While there wasn’t the tension between the designers that was present last season, there was incredible drama around who would be a part of Fashion Week. I really thought their designs were pretty ordinary… as if I could do any better.

I won’t offer a spoiler right now, but based on the last few weeks results, I wasn’t too shocked about Santino… I’ll leave you dangling by a thread ( I couldn’t help the puns ).

Next week’s episode (FEB 22) is a reunion show with all of the designers from this season and it appears to be flowing with great drama; tears, cussing and everything.

American Idol chooses the best top 24 ever!

I have to start by saying that I cannot relate to sore losers. Cursing and slamming the judges, that were good enough to sing in front of just the day before, is just uncouth. Exhibit some decorum people, please.

At the other end of the spectrum was the epitome of class, Mandisa Hundley. She boldly told Simon he hurt her but she forgave him anyway. I truly think he was touched and felt as small as he said he did.

Now for the fun stuff. The top 24 is (the bold names are those I predicted to be here): Katharine McFee, Mandisa Hundley, Melissa McGhee, Brenna Gethers, Stephanie Scott, Ayla Brown, Paris Bennett, Rebecca O Donohue, Heather Cox, Kelly Pickler, Lisa Tucker, Kinnick Sky, “Ace” Young, Robert Bennett Jr., David Radford, Jose “Sway” Penala, Elliott Yamin, Gedeon McKinney, Chris Daughtry, William “Bucky” Covington, Patrick Hall, Kevin Covias, Taylor Hicks, & William Makar. This is, in my opinion, the best top 24 American Idol has had yet.

So, how good were my predictions? I was only off by one. I predicted one person that didn’t make it but all the others did (the bold names above). How did you do?

Going out on a limb…here’s my top 12: Katharine McFee, Mandisa Hundley, Paris Bennett, Rebecca O Donohue, Heather Cox, Kelly Pickler, Ace Young, Sway Penala, Chris Daughtry, Patrick Hall, Taylor Hicks & William Makar.

The bold ones are my guess for the best of the best. But who knows, even the best of them can crack under the pressure.

Hollywood heats up on Idol and Paula looks for love?

Tonight’s a big night for Idol fans. We finally get to see the top 24. I’m planning to get comfy with freshly popped popcorn (not that microwave stuff) and pink fuzzy slippers with my sister on speed dial to watch the show.

Near the end of the show last night I actually had a little compassion for the Brittenum twins, but that didn’t last long. I think the only reason they are keeping them around after their continued awful behavior is to give us someone we love to hate. It’s all about ratings I guess. I can accept that.

I have to say I felt bad for the cowboys of Brokenote Mountain (I’m already for the Brokeback Mountain jokes to stop) because they were awful. And they tried so hard! I wouldn’t be surprised to see any of them again next year.

I loved the group of four crooners, although I definitely have my favorites. I’m adding to my top 24 prediction list William Makar, the 16 year old crooner who sang last of the four last night.

Let’s hear your predictions and we’ll see how we do! If you need to refresh your memory on Hollywood week there are lots of great pictures on the official American Idol site.

And Paula, Paula, Paula. Was the Dr. Phil Valentines special just a publicity stunt as is being reported? Do you really have a boyfriend already? The American Idol folks trying to soften the image after last year’s debacle? I’m a little disappointed because I want to really like you.

American Idol Magazine

Okay, so I admit that I have crossed the line from American Idol junky to American Idol dork. I just ordered the American Idol Magazine.

I do not know how I missed it before, but I have discovered it now. Four issues for $10. I did not think that was too bad.

I also had to order season four’s finale edition because I actually got tickets to the Idol tour after last season. It was amazing seeing the top 12 in person including Bo Bice just after he broke his foot and before he was hospitalized. Believe or not, it was far better than I anticipated. They had all grown so much in their styles and stage presence. I would highly recommend this year’s tour for any die hard Idol fan, or in my case dork!

‘Survivor’ — how does it stack up?

The battle has barely begun, and the show shook it up, combining the four tribes into two and sending Bruce to Exile Island for an extended time (and giving him immunity during the next tribal vote).

And, of course, there’s Shane…

What do you think? Did the show make it work? Did the four tribes serve any purpose? What about tossing Melinda out?

Are any favorites emerging? Comment and let others know what you think.

Why is Santino still on the Show? ‘Project Runway’

With this week’s episode of ‘Project Runway’ (Feb. 8) we are down to just 4 designers. And one of them is Santino How is this possible? His jumpsuit, pantsuit whatever, ‘Alien’ the Movie custume was just dreadful not to mention the fact that it wasn’t finished and with just one wrong move, it would have fallen apart!

For this week’s challenge, the designers designed makeovers for their fellow designers. This was really a challenge for many of the designers as they most of the designers are men and they usually design for women.

Chole pulled out a win with pretty basic design that was well executed and unfortunately the fabulously outgoing and effervescent Nick lost… the show will lack his wit and humor. He was the giddy school girl of the bunch.

Since Santino is still in the game, I’m guessing he might be in the final three and still pullout a win…. ICK!

I can’t wait until next week!

Project Runway had previously announced that you would be able to view the show online, but have pulled it from the schedule as of this week…

Ticket to the Project Runway show were offered on their online auction and fetched $1500 per ticket! I guess they thought we should wait until they aired the show to see the designers entries.

The online shows appear to end February 10th. Catch ‘em before they’re gone.

Idol’s Hollywood Week Begins with Tacky Twins

I’m unhappy that the identity theft perpetuating Brittenum twins wormed their way back on the show after an initial boot from the producers. Okay, okay, alleged identity theft perpetuating twins. It probably just makes for good TV. Those two seemed to have more face time than anyone else last night. ARGH!

I thoroughly enjoyed most of the show last night; there’s so much to say, so little time. However, I am going to make some early predictions for the top 24.

Kelly Pickler: I didn’t think she was all that awesome last night, but she seems to have made fans of the judges and she’s definitely got “the look.â€?

Paris Benet: Squeaky little speaking voice, BIG amazing vocals.

Taylor Hicks: Oh my grey haired man. Dye it baby, dye it, or I fear your career on Idol is short.

Megan Zieger: A little drama with the laryngitis and a little arrogance, but I think she has the potential to be good.

Brett “Ace Young: Those curly locks and comfortable, slow, smoldering style…oh my. I would be surprised if this one isn’t in the top 12. Looks, presence and a voice; I’m ferklempt!

Mandisa Hurdley: I know Simon doesn’t favor the “fat girls, but she has an easy confidence and a really pleasant voice. You go girl and let your hair down anytime you want.

Patrick Hall: Love him, love him, love him. All he needs is someone (like a friend of mine who will remain nameless) to trendy him up. It’s amazing what a new wardrobe and a few hair products can do.

There we go. I’m going public with my predictions. Anyone else want to join me?

‘Trading Spouses’ - Reality TV with a mission

Trading Spouses, a reality TV Show on FoxTV is the sort of reality show where I usually draw the line. The tag line of the show is “meet your new mommy” and from that line, you might get that the moms of two families are switched. The idea of the show revolves around switching the two mommies as cameras catch the unfolding drama. Usually, this is the sort of drama that grabs my attention, and in the past this show has gone to great extremes by switching a Mrs. Brady, of the Brady Bunch, sort of mom with a the mom Rosanne Barr played on her show, thus making the dynamics too predicable and too ridiculous to watch a whole episode.

Last week’s episodes (started on JAN 27 and finished FEB 3) was an example of a social experiment that really seamed to work. Yes on FOX! The families in this episode were the Clark family, where mom is a motivational speaker with an over achiever teenage daughter who has authored 5 books and the Crow family where the dad is has a crazy temper, is over bearing and so ready to explode that everyone walks on eggshells just to please dad.

Each episode ends with the two mommies meeting each other, offering advise based on their experience and the hand off of the instructions on how to spend the $50,000 each family receives for participating.

This week was different. Usually the show turns into something short of a Wild West bar brawl. This week, the two moms were genuinely interested in the advice of the other and when all was, said and done, the Crow family dad admitted he had to change soon to save his marriage and his family… this was nearly a tear jerker and I’m usually the last one to well-up.

I’m hooked, at least until the full contact family feuds return.

The show airs on Fox on Friday nights 9 p. m…. Link to show.

‘Project Runway’ continues breaking rating records.

Project Runway’ continues breaking its rating records.

According to Bravo this week’s episode was the number one show on cable for the day in key demographics.

If you haven’t had a chance to watch this show there are just 5 designers left and just a few weeks of the before the finale.

The show features aspiring designers competing for a chance to break into the notoriously difficult-to-crack fashion world. The show is hosted by Heidi Klum and judges include men’s wear designer Michael Kors and Elle Magazine fashion director Nina Garcia.

As we near the end of the season, the show is really heating up and tensions are starting to fray (I couldn’t help the pun).

Off to a good start in Panama

Yes, I had reservations about Survivor: Panama — Exile Island, but the show got off to a good start Thursday (Feb. 6, 2006).

I think the four tribes concept turned out well, although next week they are blended into two tribes, so I wonder if they had enough bonding time to make a difference.

Two members who did forge an alliance, however — and are clearly forces to be reckoned with — are retired astronaut (wouldn’t that be a fun title for your resume?) Dan Barry (described by Jeff Probst as the palest person ever to play the game) and former Navy fighter pilot Terry Deitz. These guys brought their game, know the importance of loyalty and teamwork and should be fun to watch. The young guys will no doubt want them outta there as soon as possible because they so clearly outshine them. (Speaking of clueless, those guys are, and they freely admit it.)

One of the older guys, however, will be fun to watch implode. How dumb did smoker Shane Powers have to be to wait till he got to Panama to try to quit his three-pack-a-day habit?

So far, however, the exile island part of this game seems like a bust. But it’s gotta have some kind of payoff eventually or Mark Burnett would drop it.

Who do you like? Anybody you want out RIGHT NOW?

As has been noted, this go-round starts with a different hook: The 16 castaways are divided into four groups of four: older women, younger women, older men, younger men. Apparently this grouping won’t last long. Jeff Probst said today on The Early Show that the teams get mixed up in next week’s episode.

The other hook, however, is that every week at least one castaway heads into exile on another island. Hidden somewhere on the island is an immunity island.

I don’t know whether this will work or not. What do you think?

Meanwhile, do your homework before the show by visiting CBS’ Web site.

Paula Abdul Not Lovin’ the Jail Bait

Maybe it’s just me, but it seems that Paula Abdul has something against young men this season of American Idol. She usually has a kind word for the horrible, an encouraging word for the mediocre, and great adulation for the really good. But in my opinion, she’s staying away from sending males under 18 through to Hollywood even if they have pretty good voices. Maybe not the greatest, but better than some I’ve seen her send through. Even those that both Simon and Randy say yes on. Now that’s just odd.

Could it be that they are not quite charming enough to catch her eye? Not quite grown out of the teenage awkwardness yet? She doesn’t have a problem with the young girls around the same age.

Is it that they are just too young to “take under her wing as she did with Corey Clark last year and has others in years past? A little afraid of the jail bait Paula?
