A lesson in how not to manage - “The Apprentice”

Hurried, barking, rapid fire, crazy, unfocused are just a few of the words you might use to describe the management style of Dan, this week’s (MAR 27) project manager for team Gold Rush on The Apprentice.

Dan managed to loose his team from his first words. Possessing drive and energy are very important attributes for any manager, but you have to remember to breath, make a plan, listen to your people, choose the best course, and engage your people in the process.

Dan made several mistakes. First, he listened to Lenny. Second, he didn’t listen to Lenny. Third and most fatal, he didn’t bring Lenny into the boardroom. It was pretty clear, had he brought Lenny into the boardroom, he might not have gone home.

The show is starting to get a little more interesting but seems to be missing the spark that made The Apprentice one of the shows to watch on TV. From the ratings so far, it appears others might be feeling the same way.

The next challenge (APR 03) - write a jingle for Arby’s Natural Chicken, which team will crack under the pressure?

Does anybody care about ‘Survivor’?

Finally, after what seems like a monthlong absence — though it’s not that long — Survivor returns tonight (3/30/06). I have to confess that I can hardly remember anything about it except that former fighter pilot Terry Deitz rocks. If the others want a chance to win, they had better team up against Terry (though I hope they don’t).

What about you? Will you watch the show? Or has March Madness spelled the end of your love affair with it? And if you watch it, what do you think about Survivor: Panama — Exile Island?

If you’re like me and need a refresher course, check out CBS’ site.

Then watch, and come back and comment later tonight or on Friday.

‘Unan1mous’ interesting as tough decisions must be made

After choosing a deep dark secret Richard became an outcast. The fact that he had spent some time in a mental hospital lost him the chance at 1.5 million dollars. What’s even worse is that he has to stay in this sterile claustrophobic environment for a while.

It really amazed me that this group of diverse people could come to an almost unanimous decision to give Steve (husband and father and all around good guy) the money. But that lying dirty arrogant jerk Jonathon threw the vote after promising to vote with the group for Steve. I guess that shouldn’t surprise anyone given that he’s lying about having testicular cancer to gain sympathy.

When the inquisition began regarding who went back on their promise he really over acted his innocence. The worst part was with the failure to come to a decision the money is decreasing by a dollar a second until they agree.

Then the other shoe dropped. The pious minister Kelly wants to go home even though the consequence of that decision is huge. The prize pool is cut in half.

I know a lot of people have criticized this show but I have to say that I’m finding it fascinating. I never expected that professional poker player Steve would grow on me like he has. I thought he would be a jerk.

I’ll keep tunin’ in to see what’s next.

Lisa leaves but no one is really safe on ‘American Idol’

I don’t think anyone was surprised that Lisa Tucker left this week. Watching her review from the beginning of the season, I’m reminded that she really is very talented. She just needs a little maturity and life experience to add to her technically proficient voice.

Her parents were busting with pride and Lisa handled herself with such elegance for a teenager, as did Kevin Covais last week. So much better than Ayla Brown when she left.

My jaw dropped when Ryan announced Katharine McPhee’s name in the bottom three. Over Bucky? He was pretty good this week, but I felt that she had a real solid performance as usual. Are people not voting because they figure she’s safe or is she not leaving enough of an impression? And shocking to some, I’m loosing my fascination with Ace Young. Come on dude…don’t prove my instincts about you were dead wrong. I still have hope.

Based on how we bloggers voted…and we’ve had a perfect record so far this Top 12…Katharine should NOT be in the bottom three and Bucky should. Hey, by the way we had record number of votes on our poll again this week with just over 1700 votes (up 8%).

Now let’s talk about Shakira. Obviously, her Hips Don’t Lie. Wow! She’s gorgeous and sexy and she can actually sing live. This is not a given with today’s recording artists. I’ve seen her videos and mildly pondered buying her CD, but I will probably hit Amazon.com after I’m done here.

Hey folks, it’s country next week. I can’t wait to see what Ace, Katharine, Chris, and Paris come up with. This should be good.

Bad song selection rears its ugly head on ‘American Idol’

HELP WANTED: Music lover needed with a wide array of musical tastes. Will work with American Idol contestants on song selection. Immediate employment available.

Songs of the 21st Century. Modern, popular, recognizable songs. I have threatened before but I am truly contemplating emailing the Idol folks and suggesting that they have a viewer’s choice week. We could have done much better for them than they did for themselves. I was very disappointed with most of the top 10. Don’t get me wrong, I love the show, I even love it on nights like tonight, but people…DO NOT CHOOSE SONGS YOU LOVE, CHOOSE SONGS THAT SHOW OFF YOUR VOCALS!

Lisa Tucker - Because of You by Kelly Clarkson

Unfortunately, Lisa started in the hole by picking a song that she had to be perfect on but also be different enough to WOW us. She did neither. By the judges reactions I fear they were setting her up to be the next to go and she should be. On the other hand, I loved her dangly silver earrings.

Kellie Pickler – Suds in a Bucket by Sara Evans

I have never heard this song but I love Sara Evans and I’m certain the original version was much better than what Kellie did. Pitchy, bad song choice and downright painful. She had thousands of upbeat sexy country/pop songs she could have picked from and stayed within her country comfort zone…Faith Hill, Dixie Chicks, Martina McBride or Shania Twain. How about Gretchen Wilson’s Redneck Woman…now that would have been perfect! PS-Kellie Pickler fans, check out VoteForTheWorst.com and her prom dress and then tell me how you feel about this “sweet and innocent” country girl.

Ace Young – Drops of Jupiter by Train

I know the judges disagreed, but I liked Ace changing it up a little this week. I thought he did okay. Not great, not horrible. Okay, probably forgettable. But come on, he’s Ace! And Paula, honey, hands off the talent! Haven’t you gotten in enough trouble for this stuff?

Taylor Hicks – Trouble by ?

A little subdued this week but I thought the song was perfect for Taylor’s soulful voice. He also looked great with the black leather jacket and new hair cut, didn’t he?

Mandisa - Shackles by Mary Mary

If I had to choose a short list of favorite songs of the 21st century this would be one of them (right Corrina?). I just about jumped out of my chair when Mandisa said she was going to sing it and I completely understand why she chose it. Unfortunately, once again, when people choose songs they love versus songs that show off their vocals it never seems to work right. But you go Mandisa, this song meant something to you and I think I would have done the same thing.

Chris Daughtry – What If? by Creed

First of all, I’m glad Ryan brought up the whole “original” song thing from last week. Hopefully people can just get over it now. I’ve grown into a real Chris fan but this is the first time that I just didn’t care for his performance. Okay, I really hated it. I like Creed and have a few of their CDs, but Chris didn’t pull it off for me. There’s no way he connected with the majority of 32 million American Idol viewers either. Simon was absolutely right; he went a bit too far with this one. But with his following, it won’t matter one bit.

Katharine McPhee – The Voice Within by Christina Aguilera

She is the only one in this competition that could have pulled off Christina and I think she sang it really well. It showed off her vocal range and it was one of the best performances of the evening. I’ve always thought Katharine could be the dark horse to win this thing. She may be able to sneak up on the guys.

Bucky Covington – Real Good Man by Tim McGraw

I can’t believe I’m saying this but could Bucky actually be a country star? I would be curious to see how he would fare on Nashville Star against real serious country singers. I don’t think he’ll last much longer in this competition, but he didn’t totally suck tonight.

Paris Bennett – Work it Out by Beyonce

Technically, Paris sings everything well, but she’s not Beyonce and even though she exhibited lots of energy, she just didn’t connect with me. Once again, I completely agree with Simon…she seemed like a little girl dancing in front of the bathroom mirror pretending to be sexy while singing into her hair brush. Paris, you’ve got to go. To be an American Idol you have to be a complete package. Maybe Paris you should go back to high school, figure out what you want to do, and try not to just be the product of a successful musical family.

Elliot Yamin - I Don’t Want To Be by Gavin McGraw

Elliot is back! I think he excited the audience this week. I know he did me. Whew, I think he may be safe for another week.

Bottom three? Lisa, Kellie, and let’s see, who else? Bucky? Ace?

Better than ‘Idol’?

These are fightin’ words: Nashville Star is better than American Idol.

Nancy Wilson, a morning radio personality at K99.1-FM (WHKO) also writes the Gone Country feature that appears in the Dayton Daily News on Saturdays. And her column this past weekend described the differences between Idol and Star

I think she’s right about most of them. Though I’m not a huge fan of country music, I find a greater percentage of the Star contestants seem to have a broader range of talent — often writing songs, playing instruments and working the stage better. That may be because the age range is a bit wider, so some of the finalists are more seasoned performers. I’ve enjoyed the show from the start.

However, this season is irritating. The guest judges are a disaster; they didn’t work on Idol, and they sure don’t work on Star.

How about it, Idol fans? Tune into the USA Network at 10 tonight (March 28, 2006), then blog about the two shows.

Who will the Donald fire tonight on “The Apprentice”?

Last week on The Apprentice (MAR 20), Donald finally fired one of the more annoying apprentices, Brent Buckman.

I’m sure that editing has a lot to do with how we come the judge the contestants; even this guy’s walk was annoying as he was making his final exit to the cab. While I did think several of his teammates were a little mean to him, he really was annoying.

Some of Brent’s troubles revolved around his weight as well as what appeared to be a very aggressive personality. On an earlier episode, he mentioned he lost 110 pounds by using a diet he created. You can find his diet on his website - If you’re looking for a diet plan and you like bagels this diet might be for you as you’ll have to eat 4 bagels a day. Looking at the photos on his web site and comparing them with his look/weight on The Apprentice…. something seems inconsistent here.

Tonight’s challenge (MAR 27) includes a Norwegian Cruise Line challenge; who will be fired this week?

“AI” Buzz : Chris Daughtry not so original after all.

The chat rooms and blogs are buzzing about Chris Daughtry’s not so original rendition of Walk the Line. Listen to this version of Walk the Line by Live and see if it sounds familiar to you? I’m having trouble with this link, but if you click through to the album you can hear what everyone’s talkin’ about. Click here

Bottom line…should he have let the judges go on and on about what an awesome and original performance he had when he knew he had covered it from Live? Rumors have it that he mentioned it in the preshow interview and it was cut.

I don’t think this is the big deal everyone is making it out to be. How does this affect how you feel about Chris? Read More

‘American Idol’s’ Pickler dubbed the worst and other juicy tidbits

Looks like the best efforts of VoteForTheWorst.com could not save little Kevin Covais. If you haven’t checked out the website yet, the founders rally around the idol who they dub to be the worst and encourage people to vote for them. They claim victories by keeping Scott Saval around last season and Jasmine Trias and John Stevens the season before and now that Kevin is gone they’ve picked Pickler!?!? Whether or not this grass roots effort really postpones or changes the outcome of the voting is a topic for debate, but there’s some interesting reading on this site. And they promise to have some new dirt on Kellie Pickler on Monday, March 27.

Interesting that they would pick Pickler as the worst when Simon Cowell told Larry King last week that he felt she would be in the top three with Chris Daughtry and Taylor Hicks. We’ll see Simon, we’ll see.

Local boy goes Hollywood: University of Dayton graduate Art Conn, 34, returns to Hollywood this year as a stylist for American Idol. His job is to help the finalists with their wardrobe, hair, accessories and makeup. A typical day includes playing bodyguard to the singers as they go shopping in Los Angeles for the perfect look. “Some love it, some hate it. It’s hard if someone thinks they know their own style and don’t need any help, because things don’t always look the same on TV as they do in the mirror,” he said. Last year he helped Carrie Underwood put together a look despite her hatred of shopping. Read More

Imagine a country where more people vote for a pop idol than the next president. That’s the premise of the upcoming movie American Dreamz by Universal Pictures. Set to release on April 21, this tongue in cheek look at our current fascination with “idolsâ€? comes complete with its own political agenda and terrorist plot. Oh, and don’t forget to check out the “idolesqueâ€? website where you can view performances, interviews, etc. Hugh Grant, Dennis Quaid, Mandy Moore and Chris Cline lead the cast with what looks to be particularly fun and entertaining movie if you are a fan of director Paul Weitz (About a Boy, In Good Company, & American Pie).

‘UNAN1MOUS’ premiere both interesting and intense

From the producers of The Biggest Loser and Beauty and the Geek comes something of a controlled social experiment.

Social experiment? Absolutely. Controlled? Anything but.

Nine strangers gather in a very sterile and monochromatic living quarters with no windows, no clocks, and absolutely no contact with the outside world. Everything here has the feel of a science fiction movie.

After being directed to gather across the bridge in the inner circle by a spooky woman’s voice, the unsuspecting nine find out why they are here. Projected on a large screen above them are the head and shoulders of a man who tells them they could win 1.5 million dollars. Lots of smiles. Then he tells them that the goal is to unanimously decide on one person to receive 1.5 million dollars. The smiles disappear.

After given a brief moment to decide whether or not to leave (none of them did), they were then told that if anyone leaves the bunker from this point forward the money is cut in half.

Nine players are thrust together in what has to be the most claustrophobic environment ever with a seemingly impossible task. Then the poker player, soccer mom, ladies man, office manager, fashion designer, 42 yr old temp, truck driver, minister, and dancer are given their first chance to vote. Of course there was not a unanimous decision or there would be no show, but they are also told there are consequences to not reaching a decision.

No windows

No sense of time

No contact with outside world

No way out

The first episode was both interesting and intense. Out of all the reality shows I’ve watched for some reason I felt most like a voyeur watching this one. AND I’m looking forward to see how it unfolds. Sick, I’m just sick. Hopefully I’m not alone and there are other curious and sick people watching too.

Faith is restored in ‘American Idol’ fans - Bye Bye Chicken Little

Millions of American Idol fans finally got it right! We opened the door for Chicken Little to fly the coop and away he goes. The funny part is that I enjoyed this week’s performance from Kevin Covais more than any other. Regardless, he needed to go. Maybe he’ll get a speech coach, ditch the lisp and pursue a career in music. If that doesn’t work, Paula may hire him for her personal adorable lap dog.

The bottom three were perfect. Kevin Covais, Bucky Covington, and Lisa Tucker and guess what? The amazing, insightful voters on the DDN American Idol poll predicted exactly that. These were exactly the top three we wanted gone with Kevin leading the way and these three also sunk to the bottom three when we voted for our favorites. Bucky and Lisa better choose the perfect songs and perform them well to avoid the bottom three again. Ace, Elliot and Paris better step it up a bit or they may see themselves standing alone in the middle of the stage next week.

Nothing lackluster about most of ‘American Idol’s’ top 11.

For the faithful readers of this blog, I promised some fun tidbits last weekend but unexpectedly found myself in the emergency room Friday afternoon. Side note: If you can help it, never ever find yourself in the ER on St. Patrick’s Day. Somehow I think the concept of having a designated driver does not mean the designate should be the ambulance driver.

During my stay at the hospital (after being poked and prodded for three days, all of the serious stuff was eliminated thank goodness), you would be amazed at how many conversations I had with different folks about American Idol. Mind you, these were not initiated by me. What I discovered is that Idol fans really do come in all walks of life.

Picture this. You’re a nurse in an intensive care unit and it’s been a busy night. You hear “Oh my God and “I can’t believe it from the room of a recently admitted patient. You catch the eye of the nurse beside you and both dart toward the anxious voices. After almost tripping over an unsuspecting nurse’s assistant you arrive to see all eyes, including the patient’s family and the charge nurse, on the television. “Can you believe Ace is in the bottom three?

Even in the midst of life’s toughest moments looks like American Idol gives many of us a much needed escape.

Now to this week’s show. Barry Manilow, master song writer and arranger, worked with the Idols this week and it appears that he really drove home the importance of feeling the song, not just singing it.

Mandisa – I Don’t Hurt Anymore by Dianna Washington. Incredible. Mandisa. Wow. She was awesome. Great song selection, sung perfectly and she looked absolutely beautiful. This woman drips of class to me. Does anyone else think she looks a lot like Angela Bassett?

Bucky Covington – Oh Boy! By Buddy Holly. Bucky did okay with the 50’s. I was wondering what he would choose and Buddy Holly was a good artist but I thought the performance was boring.

Paris Bennett – Fever by Peggy Lee. Paris looked like she could have walked right out of a dimly lit smoke filled jazz bar in the 50’s. Paris performed well, just like the judges said, but it didn’t wow me for some reason. Maybe I hold her to too high of a standard.

Chris Daughtry – I Walk the Line by Johnny Cash. Weird sideburns are gone, yeah! Chris looked hot with the scruffy day old beard. Vocally it was a bit rocky at times but he took a well known song and made it completely different. Made it better as far as I’m concerned. Sorry Johnny.

Katharine McPhee – Come Rain or Come Shine by Ella Fitzgerald. I think this type of slow and sultry song really suits Katharine and she performed it well. I loved it, but it’s no secret that she’s been one of my favorites all along. I agree with some of my cohorts at work that she looked extremely uncomfortable last night. Probably afraid some of that double sided tape might come loose on live TV.

Taylor Hicks – Not Fade Away by Buddy Holly. Taylor is a great performer but this song didn’t necessarily show off his range and vocal skills. Simon was absolutely right when he said if you pulled this one performance out of context, it wasn’t that great, but I love Taylor and I enjoyed it. Can he actually ride this wave all the way to the end?

Lisa Tucker – Why Do Fools Fall in Love? By Frankie Lymon & the Teenagers. Barry Manilow called Lisa a powerhouse and he is right. This was a good performance but it wasn’t a great one. Quite honestly, she should have chosen a better song. I think this song requires the great harmonies of the original to give it the wow factor.

Kevin Covais – When I Fall in Love by Nat King Cole. Hold on to your seats ladies and gentlemen. Don’t say I didn’t warn you but I enjoyed this performance by Kevin. It was pitchy and wasn’t by far the greatest performance of the night, but if I’m being honest - I didn’t hate it. Does he need to go this week? Yes. Yes he does. Will he? No. No he won’t.

Elliot Yamin – Teach Me Tonight by Al Jarreau. Elliot looked great tonight. The hair, the little goatee. Very nice. Good song choice for him and he did a great job with it. Elliot is consistently good and he probably has one of the purest voices this year. But I fear he doesn’t connect with the audience enough.

Kellie Pickler – Walkin’ After Midnight by Patsy Cline. This was by far my favorite Kellie Pickler performance, which isn’t hard because I’m not a huge fan, but I love this song and she did it well. That said, the sexy little siren thing didn’t work for me this week. Seemed too put on and not natural enough, but it was a great song for her and I’m sure the guys watchin’ loved her sexy little act.

Ace Young – In the Still of the Night by the Five Satins. The sighing is back because Ace is back. Although it didn’t quite top Father Figure for me, it was pretty close. And Barry was right about the falsetto! Makes me melt, oh does Ace make me melt.

I have to get this off my chest. I liked Constantine last year. I was devastated when he was voted off, but it just bugged me how the camera kept cutting to him like he’s some kind of expert or something. I think most of the guys this year are as good if not better than Constantine was last year.

Okay – bottom three. This is really tough because no one really stood out as being awful to me this week. But I’ll give it a try Bucky, Lisa, and should be Kevin but I fear for Elliot and Ace?

Why did MTV allow Paula on ‘Real World’?

The show that launched the reality TV genre in the United States has pushed the envelope again.

The Real World keeps grinding on season after season by throwing together beautiful, self-involved, dysfunctional young adults into pimped-out pads and watch the tears, bear and emotional train wrecks. Former housemates have had to deal with alcohol abuse, AIDs and a whole lot of unresolved anger.

This season, in Key West, however, it’s gone a step farther. Paula Meronek had self-esteem issues from the very start, and it didn’t take long for the housemates to see she had an eating disorder.

The Associated Press’ Jay Cohen addresses the issue and the ethics involved, along with providing some warning signs. Read the story and tell what you think. Is MTV being irresponsible this time, or is the show merely raising awareness about an important issue?

The show’s on at 10 p.m. Tuesdays.

Former ‘Apprentice’ visiting local school

The first Apprentice winner, Bill Rancic, will appear at Tippecanoe High School in Tipp City Wednesday as part of a promotion in which local Ace Hardware retailers were able to nominate high schools in their community that are committed to educational growth and mentoring.

Rancic will speak at the school about lessons he’s learned, plus the school will receive $5,000 for school improvements and programming from the Tipp City Ace Hardware.

Rancic still works for Donald Trump and often appears on The Apprentice in the boardroom and following the teams as they go about their tasks.

‘American Idol’ fans repel ‘Brain Droppings’

By now many of you have either read or heard about the Idol bashing in the Brain Droppings blog of Ron Rollins at DaytonDailyNews.com. I’ve read many of Ron’s droppings and he’s clearly an intelligent man. You see, I can acknowledge a difference of opinion without the assumption of ignorance. I would probably choose to assign words like judgmental or narrow minded rather than those like fungus and uncivilized but to each his own.

In the spirit of current American Idol finalist Mandisa; Ron, I want you to know that I’ve forgiven you, and that you don’t need someone to apologize to forgive them.

Now on to the lighthearted fun stuff we prefer to turn our attention to.

I watched the premiere of American Idol Extra on the Fox Realty channel last night and was pleasantly surprised. Host Ty Treadway (actor and Emmy-nominated host of Soap Talk) was sweet and compassionate as he interviewed Melissa McGhee right after being voted off the show Wednesday night. As co-hosts I was tickled to see feisty little Mikalah Gordon from Season 4 (I was probably one of her few fans) and then as icing on the cake, Season 3’s Matt Rogers joined the bunch. Mikalah filled us in on what several of the past Idol finalists are doing and Matt chatted with celebrities that call themselves huge American Idol fans.

All and all, I really enjoyed it. If you have the time, check it out. I understand they will air it a couple more times this weekend.

Check back with the American Idol blog this weekend for more tidbits and playful Idol fun!

Bottom three on ‘American Idol’ stinks!

Melissa McGhee goes home? She was not perfect by any means this week but there are much worse in this competition. As much as I love this show, my frustration is stewing.

The bottom three…Ace Young, Melissa McGhee and Lisa Tucker? Come on, as adorable as Kellie Pickler is, Lisa outperformed her by a mile. How can you compare Melissa’s lyrics oops with the Pee Wee dancing Kevin Covais? Anyone have a remotely logical explanation for this? Please!

We DDN.com fans had more sense than the rest of America with 48% of us wanting Chicken Little to GO HOME!!!

So how did we do overall?

The vast majority of us wanted Kevin to be voted off with Bucky Covington coming in a distant second. Melissa was third.

Going Home

Kevin Covais 48%
Bucky Covington 14%
Melissa McGhee 9%

Kellie Pickler 7%
Lisa Tucker 4%
Paris Bennett 4%

Katharine McPhee 1%
Taylor Hicks 1%
Chris Daughtry 0%

Our favorites are quite clear with the strong leaders being Chris and Taylor. The rest of group kind of hanging around considerably below that. Interesting observation. Melissa, Ace and Lisa were three of our four least favorite.

760 votes were cast for favorite Idol 612 votes cast to vote off

Thanks so much for voting! Obviously we have more sense than the rest of the country so I guess we just need dial those phones more!

Let’s end with a little Idol gossip. Looks like Kellie Pickler’s jail bird father has come out of the wood work to show support for his daughter. Interesting timing don’t you think? He is set to be released on May 12 from the Florida prison where his 45 month prison term for felony battery and aggravated assault will be complete. He claims that despite what people think he and Kellie are very close. Oh…is that why he wrote a letter to the the Stanly News and Press in Albemarle, N.C. to announce his support rather than contacting Kellie directly? Things that make you go hmmmm.

Watch tomorrow on Fox Reality for the behind the scenes coverage of tonight’s show. I’ll be watching.

The game is afoot on ‘American Idol’

Three hours of American Idol. Whew! It started at 7 p.m. with Idol Tonight on the TV Guide Channel. The hosts former Idol finalist Kimberly Caldwell and Popstars contestant Rosanna Tavarez were enthusiastic and down right annoying. But if you can handle the “MTVesque live show with lots of whooping fans, it may be fun to catch up on past Idol contestants. It was cool to see ex-Idol finalist John Peter Lewis. Hey JPL fans, he is working on an album that should be out within a couple months and he will be touring this summer.

I know it sounds silly but as the Top 12 were introduced I felt the tickle of excitement that I feel before a long awaited movie or before a show at the Victoria or a live American Idol concert!

Ace Young performed Do I Do. Unfortunately the performance was the best part. The vocals were shaky. I wish I could say it was because he was nervous, but it was just the wrong song. That said, the kid has charisma. Wonderful, sexy charisma. But Ace, you can’t rest on that. Not with this bunch.

Blame It On The Sun intimidated little country girl Kellie Pickler. I understand why. Blah. She seemed to adapt the song to her country style but all I can think of is blah, oh wait, blah and bland. She seemed completely uncomfortable in her own skin.

Elliot Yamin Knocks Me Off My Feet with his vocals almost every time. I wasn’t super fond of the song, didn’t even recognize it to be honest, but he performed it very well.

Mandisa sang Don’t You Worry About a Thing and as usual, I don’t think she has a thing to worry about tonight. Here’s a woman comfortable in her own bare feet and it shows. Not her best performance, but still the best so far tonight.

I’ll bet not too many people were surprised that Bucky Covington never owned a Stevie Wonder record. But that didn’t seem to hurt him. Superstitious was a great song choice for Bucky and I actually enjoyed it. Yes, Bucky fans, I thought he did well tonight. He’ll be stickin’ around another week. The biggest problem I had with him was his “Jessica Simpson” hair. What were they thinking?

Melissa McGhee looked absolutely gorgeous! The Idol stylists got it right with her as did America when they kept her in the Top 12 over Ayla Brown. I think the song Lately was perfect for her vocal range. Yes, she was pitchy and forgot some of the lyrics, but I still enjoyed her performance. Don’t criticize the lyrics thing…let’s see YOU get up on stage in front of a live audience, millions of TV viewers and Simon Cowell and remember the lyrics yourself.

Sticking around for another week will be Lisa Tucker who sang Signed Sealed Delivered I’m Yours. She still doesn’t seem 16 to me, but she certainly didn’t seem like an old lady tonight. She was simply wonderful.

I apologize in advance to Kevin Covais fans. Pee Wee Herman performs Part Time Lover. There was laughing out loud in my house. I chuckled — no, belly laughed — through the entire performance. The last time I heard this song performed was by last year’s Idol finalist Anwar Robinson in the live tour. Anwar was smooth and sexy. Kevin? Ludicrous. Kevin Covais in the Top 12 is absolutely ludicrous.

I remember why I’ve always been a Katharine McPhee fan. She didn’t look much like herself tonight with all the makeup (fabulous dress though for you fashion forward Idol fans) but WOW did she sound like herself. Until You Come Back To Me was a perfect song choice and she did not disappoint.

Taylor Hicks feels every note, every beat, everything in his bones when he sings. Livin’ for the City couldn’t have been a better choice for him. I love the way his eyes twinkle when he sings. Just remarkable.

Paris Bennett has pipes; no doubt about it. She looked precious in pink and her high energy performance was flawless. The judges all loved her rendition of All I Do and she will be around for weeks.

They once again saved the best for last. Chris Daughtry was a ROCK STAR. I’ve never enjoyed a rocker on American Idol more. Finding the song Higher Ground was a down right miracle for him. Who would have thunk Chris doing Stevie?

Kellie Pickler, Kevin Covais or God forbid, Ace is out!

‘Idol’ voting starts on DDN.com tonight

Ready, set, vote!

Finally, the preliminaries are over. The 12 American Idol finalists have been picked and tonight (3/14/06) we can start voting for our favorites.

We’ve been talking on Reality Bytes for a month or more about Ace, Chris, Mandisa and the rest — and why IS Kevin still there? No way should he have made it this long.

But I digress. Visit DaytonDailyNews.com after the show is over tonight — maybe while you are waiting to get through to AI on the phone — and vote in the first of our weekly polls. You can vote for your favorite singers once an hour from the time the show is over until Wednesday’s show begins. Will we vote for the same folks as the national audience does?

After voting on our poll, visit Reality Bytes to tell why you’re voting the way you are — and who you REALLY want to go.

Can’t get enough of Idol? A weekly live pre-show makes its debut tonight on the TV Guide Channel. Find out more about the pre-show.

More ‘American Idol’ Juicy Tidbits

Anyone out there want even more American Idol? Premiering March 16 on Fox Reality TV (Western Ohio - Time Warner Cable Channel 125) is American Idol Extra. It will air every Thursday at 6:30 p.m. EST and again at 10:30 p.m. EST and repeat several times during the weekend. According to David Lyle, COO and General Manager of Fox Reality, “Never before have viewers been allowed to see the intimate and emotional back stage reactions following a contestant being voted off. We are excited to be the ones to bring it to the fans.” Oh, but that’s not all. It will also include visits with some of the past season’s finalists to get an update on their lives and comments and reactions on performances from celebrities and contestants let go earlier in the current season. This should be fun!

I found all kinds of juice on AccessHollywood.com like did you know that Chris Daughtry was asked to drop out of Idol and become the lead singer of the band Fuel? He was really flattered but thank goodness he decided to stick it out and see what happens with Idol.

There are conflicting reports as to whether Ace Young has a girlfriend or not. According to TMZ.com Ace has been seeing Essence Atkins, an actress he met on the set of the UPN series ‘Half & Half.” However, when Access Hollywood spoke to him directly he said the rumors are false. “I was on a TV show with the person the rumor is with and the whole TV show is being very supportive that’s just it. I’m a single guy.”

On a ridiculous note, with Ace getting all this manic attention from female fans, of course Kevin Covais needs to clear up rumors of his own love life. Tabloid reports claim that he has a girlfriend, fellow Island Trees High School student, Victoria Fairclough, are false. The two once dated but are now good friends. “The person who is speculated to be my girlfriend is still a close friend of mine but yes, on the record, I do not have a girlfriend.” I think I may have to vomit.

Katharine McPhee seems to have become the object of an intense rumor mill. There is the one that says she goes home every night (20 minutes away) to sleep rather than staying at the hotel with the others giving her an unfair advantage. According to Katharine this is completlely false. Then there was the pregnancy rumor and the speculation that she was dropping out that Ryan Seacrest dispelled on this week’s show. She blames it on her clothing choices. “I’m really into the shirts that are really in style now - haltered and flared, but when you are more well endowed they kind of stick out a little more.â€?

Melissa McGhee is a pageant princess and it is said that American Idol producers have gotten their hands on some footage they will share at some point in the season. I guess being the current reigning Miss Sunburst has it’s priveledges. She has flown out her own personal stylist to help her out throughout the competition.

Okay Idol fans…who is going home this week?

With the challenge of singing a Stevie Wonder song, unless Bucky pulls out stunning performance I say he goes. Do you agree?

America gets 10 of ‘American Idol’s’ Top 12 right

Welcome back Bo. I thought he looked great; lost a couple pounds maybe? Just like Carrie Underwood the other night he oozed a confidence and poise that must come with “stardom. That said, if he were still competing I don’t think he would have gotten my vote tonight. He sang his own Top 40 song off key. Maybe that’s just a live performance thing, but don’t you think Idols should be able to do that?

Before we begin, can you imagine what the contestants feel like sitting on that stage? The dream could be just beginning or about to come to an end. They are probably glad the lights are dim so the audience cannot see their hearts jumping out of their chests. They are praying Seacrest won’t ask them a stupid question because they might freeze up or choke on their own spit. I imagine there is no adrenaline rush like it.

Well here we go to the contestants leaving…I have never been a Kinnik Sky fan so I’m not disappointed or surprised that’s she’s leaving. She did exhibit a lot of class though. Being a very spiritual person, I’ll bet she would make some church an amazing music director or praise and worship leader.

Oh, I was afraid Will Makar was going to be gone this week. He was my Anthony Federov of this season and I was really looking forward to seeing his growth throughout the season and eventually on the Idol tour this summer. Bummer. Good Luck Will!

I felt bad for Ayla Brown, but not too bad. Never liked her. Can you imagine having to sing right after loosing? That is cruel and unusual punishment. Halleluiah Melissa stays!

What a confident young man Geddeon McKinney is. Odd and a little touched. I see him joining Kinnik in church as a young Bishop T.D Jakes singing and preaching to the masses.

So, how did I do on my Top 12 predictions? I got 7 out of 12. Katharine McPhee, Mandisa, Paris Bennett, Kellie Pickler, Ace Young, Chris Daughtry, & Taylor Hicks. Over the last few weeks I’m happy I discovered Elliot Yamin, Melissa McGhee and Lisa Tucker. I would have never imagined either Kevin Covais or Bucky Covington being here.

Top 6 predictions? Come on people; don’t make me do this alone. I know there are vastly differing opinions out there on a couple folks. Kellie, Ace, Bucky, Kevin.

My Top 6: Katharine McPhee, Ace Young, Chris Daughtry, Taylor Hicks, Elliot Yamin & Paris Bennett.

Okay folks, it would not be my blog without mentioning Ace. Did you him comforting little Paris while Geddeon was singing his goodbye? How sensitive and sweet and what a gentleman. Sigh…

Prepare for a shameless plug: The new reality show UNAN1MOUS is starting on March 22. Hopefully you saw the commercials during tonight’s show. Come join the blog with me and let’s peek into what is sure to be an interesting observation into the best and worst of human nature. Can you imagine? Locked in a bunker until nine strangers decide whether or not to give you 1.5 million dollars or try to get it for themselves. Should be intriguing.

And finally, who for the love of God let the Brittenumm twins in?

Surprise Winner for ‘Project Runway 2’

Reality TV shows are full of twists and turns and this was the case for the ending of season 2 of ‘Project Runway’. Chloe Dao was named the winner during the finale and I have to say I was pretty surprised.

Daniel had been a very strong competitor throughout the series and his finale presentation was also quite strong, but not strong enough, at least in the minds of the judges. Clearly Santino was not in the running with his weak showing and his near-misses throughout the season.

Chloe appeared to be shocked as well when she was named as the winner. In various reports including an AP story, Chloe is quoted as saying, “…but am I going to be the next Vera Wang or Ralph Lauren? I don’t know.â€? Her clothes were well designed and appeared to be well executed and of great quality, at least in my humble, non-expert opinion, but does that make for America’s next great fashion designer?

Daniel appears to have a finer sense of vision and style and should have been the winner of this season! And in the unaired episode of Kara’s work, she was really a much better designer than was portrayed in the series (Checkout her runway show). While I’m pretty sure we’ll see all of the designer’s work on another runway somewhere, I’m very interested to see just what Chloe does with her win…

The winning designs are currently up for auction at ‘Project Runway’s Store’

Till next season!

The men of ‘American Idol’ out perform the girls.

Let me start with fashion kudos for Ryan Seacrest. He looked great. Love the navy pin striped suit and skinny tie.

I’ve never been a Geddeon McKinney fan but he did okay tonight. Good song selection and he didn’t bug me with that spooky smile. I have a question…why do the judges think it is okay for Geddeon to be “an old soulâ€? and choose older songs but it’s disastrous for the gals? Interesting.

Chris Daughtry continues to choose perfect songs for his vocal range and rocker voice. He sang one of my favorite songs of last year and did a great job. I thought the woman accompanying him hit a couple sour notes, but he was great. Chris, by the way, you are meant to be a bald man. Just hot!

I have a hard time finding kind words for Kevin Covais. It almost makes me feel like a puppy killer or something. He enjoys rapping to Kenya West? Yeah, I would like to hear that! I know the virtual rotten eggs will fly, like its sacrilege to dislike this kid, but he just bugs me. Please, someone back me up here!

Okay…so Bucky Covington wasn’t awful tonight, which is a step up in my book of Bucky. Not to agree with Simon again, but here’s the thing, you could hear this in Anytown, North Carolina, in a poorly lit pool hall with some sloppy drunk high school drop outs pretending to sing into their beer bottles and pool sticks. And I’ll continue to be a snob and say to his parents…Bucky and Rocky? What were you thinking? You handicapped them from birth.

What a little sex symbol Will Makar is. His performance wasn’t WOW, but he has an incredible voice and great stage presence for a kid his age. I hope teen girls and middle age women vote like crazy because I would like to see him in the Top 12. I will be voting for him multiple times because he might need the help to stay in it.

I thought Taylor Hicks started a little rocky, but I forgot about 15 seconds in. He did Michael McDonald proud right until Taylor took over with the whole arm winding epileptic dance thing. Doesn’t matter, because I still loved it. He is really growing on me even with his odd performance ticks. Someone has definitely toned down his hair and put a few dark low lights through it and it looks great. I didn’t think I could get used to the grey, but it looks really nice and he’s still Taylor.

Each week I become a bigger fan of Elliott Yamin. As good as his performance was I was waiting for him to just burst out and nail it, but I felt like he was almost holding back a little. Nevertheless, he is still awesome and will give the “pretty boys a run for their money.

Speaking of pretty boys. Ohhhhhhhhhh, Ace. Ace Young just like the song said, you give me butterflies inside too. Most of the falsetto was great, a couple times I thought it seemed a bit squeaky, but overall he showed a great range. There is no doubt in my mind that singing the ballads will get him plenty of the female vote. The beanie and biting of the lower lip during the judges critique…well, that could put anyone over the edge. I find myself literally sighing when he performs. When I ran it back and watched again, I sighed again. Uncontrollably. And for you ladies who don’t like Ace. Good. More for those of us who do.

Prediction: This is a really tough one. It should be Kevin, Bucky or Geddeon going but I fear Will may be gone this week.

Check out the photos of the girls from the other night. As soon as I see the guys are up, I’ll pop the link in this post.

Hey folks. Anyone notice that all my secrets came out in this weeks shows? I swear I didn’t know that was going to happen. Just Idol ESP I guess.

The creative team that brought us ‘Project Runway’ has been busy cooking up what looks to be a great addition to the Bravo TV reality show line-up. Who Will Win ‘Project Runawy 2 ’ Tonight?

We’re down to the end of one of the best shows on television this season, ‘Project Runway’. What seemed to make ‘Project Runway’ better than many of the reality shows is the creative aspect, creating something from nothing and competing to win.

This season was void of some of the drama of the first season with the crazy Wendy Pepper, but Santino was the clearly the source of much of the tension throughout the season.

The finale ends tonight at 8:00 p m on Bravo TV

Predictions - Who will win - Daniel V. Who should win - Kara (She wasn’t one of the finalist, but her work for the finale was great.) Checkout the three final contestant’s work.

Chole

Daniel

Santino

‘Race’ camps out in Brazil

A co-worker said that Lisa and Joni, the sisters who were eliminated this week (3/7/06) from The Amazing Race, were like teenagers who never got past junior high school. Their exuberance was exhausting.

Meanwhile, the show promises to head to Russia next week. Don’t know about you, but I’m ready to leave Brazil behind. That said, Fran and Barry get my award this week for best perseverance. Had I been Fran, I’d still be hanging around trying to scale the waterfall.

What team impressed you this week? I’m still loving the carefree BJ and Tyler, and I find their friendship with the Eric and Jeremy as unexpected as they do.

Are you into Race this time around? Or are you all consumed by American Idol? CBS is smartly not putting Race head-to-head with Idol. That’s one race CBS would lose.

With the Top 12 looming the ‘American Idol’ girls step it up.

Thank goodness some of the girls stepped it up this week.

I agree that Paris Bennett is a very talented young lady and will probably sail through to the Top 12, but she better start choosing better songs or she won’t stay until the end. The Conga is a fun song, but it’s still too old for her. Why not something more current? Paris, try Destiny’s Child, Brandy (celebrity sighting) or even Gwen Stefani.

Lisa Tucker performed her song beautifully and the wardrobe police definitely helped her image this week, but it just didn’t get where it needed to be. I wanted love it, but something is just missing. It’s got to be song selection again. Lisa, oh, oh, I would love to see you try Jennifer Lopez or Janet Jackson.

Melissa McGhee chose a Heart song, which was gutsy. I was excited because I thought she would blow it away with that raspy, sexy voice, but alas she didn’t. It was okay, but I agree with Simon that it sounded like she shouted a good part of the song. I would love to see her try Sheryl Crow, Avril Lavigne or even Pink if she lasts. I’m voting for her because I’ve always like her and she is getting better. On a side note, did she get her belly button pierced since last week? I didn’t see it before and I think I would have caught it. Anyone else?

Kinnik Sky chose the right song and sang it in the wrong keys. Yes I said keys, plural. She was all over the place. It’s not that she can’t sing; she’s just not an American Idol. I’m with Simon; she’s gone this week.

Katharine McPhee was great. Perfect song for her vocal skills and it showcased her enthusiastic personality. I’ve always favored her and she did not disappoint this week. One tip Katharine…under wire bras offer a lot more support, less bounce. Although I suspect the guys didn’t mind, I could tell she was a bit self conscious.

Ayla Brown sang my current favorite song by Natasha Bedingfield. Sorry Ayla fans, I just can’t come around to liking her. I don’t see anything behind her eyes. She looks like she’s having fun, but it’s just not real. I fear she’ll stay around and I’ll be mad that someone I like better will go home. It would be fun to see how she would do with a Jewel or a Nora Jones song.

Mandisa, Mandisa, Mandisa. You go girl! She could record and release this song right now. Great choice for her vocal range, good fit for her personality, just awesome! She has been another one of my favorites from the beginning. I think she should try Queen Latifah or Missy Elliot. And Mandisa, more flattering wardrobe choice this week. Good job.

Kellie Pickler will actually make it through this week on great song choice, a good vocal and a surprising performance… not just the adorable factor. Then she speaks and the adorable factor kicks in and seals the deal. That little mink. ; ) Kellie should do a sexy Shania Twain or the Dixie Chicks.

Okay, what’s the deal with Simon and Carrie Underwood? I’ve heard him slam her a couple times before. Carrie seems just as sweet as Kellie; maybe not as adorable or naïve. Interesting. We’ll have to try to investigate this one a little more.

Predictions: Kinnik and Melissa will be gone, but it should be Kinnik and don’t kill me…Ayla. No throwing virtual tomatoes and eggs ladies.

‘Race’ off to a good start

I’m delinquent writing about last week’s season opener of The Amazing Race, but it’s not because it didn’t deserve attention.

I thought it was a great beginning. Just as I predicted, BJ and Tyler were fun, crazy and ought to be entertaining contenders for a good long time. The ones that were a pleasant surprise were the Nerds, David and Lori. They rejoice in their nerdity, but they’re good, too.

What do you think? Who impressed you or drove you crazy last week?

Chicken Little stays on ‘American Idol’ while talent slips away.

Oh what a difference a year makes. Carrie Underwood exuded the kind of star quality I suspect the creators of this show were shooting for. Not since Kelly Clarkson has a winner fulfilled my expectations as much as Carrie. I am not a huge country music fan but I’ve been diggin’ her CD and am particularly fond of Jesus Take the Wheel and Before he Cheats.

The girls voted off were predictable. Heather Cox & Brenna Gethers. Kinnik better pull out all the stops or she’s gone next week.

Oh boys. Kevin Covais and David Radford were a given for me. However, David must have been a pretty nice kid for the other finalists to come out on stage with him. I’ve never seen that before and I must admit I got a bit misty. In regards to the Sway Penala/Kevin Covais stand off, I’m so disappointed. Sway wasn’t always my favorite but Kevin wouldn’t even win a role in the junior high musical. Please tell me that this wasn’t a race thing. Please.

Fashion alert! Mandisa, girlfriend, you could not have chosen a more unflattering outfit. Each and every person who told you that you looked nice in the black spaghetti strap number with the hem cut at the widest part of your thighs should be shot. I can respect and appreciate the fact that you don’t really care what others think as long as you feel good about yourself, but I wouldn’t want to be present when you watch the show back.

The judges really disappointed me tonight. No class and inconsiderate. Their behavior was in very poor taste and by the way was Paula Abdul drunk?

So now we wait. This four day stretch without Idol kills me! Maybe I’ll find time to spend with my husband. Poor guy has become an Idol widower three days a week. Then again, I learned to love football so honey can’t you try to at least tolerate Idol? For me?

PS - I warn you, if you haven’t already figured it out, you will probably get sick of hearing about Ace this season. But is that nervous, wide eyed vulnerable look just too hot? Girls…back me up on this. And how about those curls?

They saved the best for last tonight on ‘Idol!’

After watching American Idol tonight, my favorites flip-flopped all over the place. I love how this show surprises me all the time.

Someone at work suggested that Taylor Hicks grey hair is gradually becoming less bright. Kind of like his performance tonight. Good, but not great.

Elliott Yamin proved the theory that real talent can overcome bad song selection. I didn’t care for the song, just not my style, but once again he delivered. I love this guy.

If I’m Not The One by Daniel Bedingfield is one of my all- time favorite songs. My heart actually skipped a beat when Ace Young said he was going to perform it. I agree with the judges that this song showed more of his range, but it sounded like he chose the wrong key or something. I wanted him to nail it, but he didn’t. Ace, I want to be able to see you live in the Idols tour later this year, so choose a better song next time. Please!

Gedeon McKinney really surprised me. As long as I didn’t watch him singing, I really enjoyed him. I’m sorry, and this sounds awful, but his face distracts me from his voice. Kind of like Lisa Tucker’s wardrobe did Tuesday night; but at least she can change that. I’m starting to agree he could be a great recording artist, but never an American Idol. Sorry Gedeon.

Kevin Covais a sex symbol? We all have dreams honey. Kevin Covais soulfully singing Marvin Gaye? Naw. Kevin Covais a clumsy little white boy bobble head? That was the image that kept coming to my head. Kevin Covais continuing because he’s likeable and cute? Oh Lord I hope not.

Another huge surprise was that I really enjoyed Sway Penala. But the judges hated it. I can’t figure this guy out. And I don’t understand why I seem to hear something differently than everyone else. Am I alone in this?

I didn’t understand why the judges hated Will Makar’s performance so much. I think he took a well known Kenny Rogers song and made it fresh. He has such clarity in the tone of his voice. Was it over the top? No, but he was dead on pitch 99% of the time and that’s more than some of the others could say tonight. Keep tryin’ Will. I’m voting for ya and I assure you, I’m a little older than 11.

Okay, Kellie Pickler was adorable with the calamari bit but Bucky Covington just looked like a stupid hick in a similar wierd food conversation. Bucky, I know you are a really a nice and sincere guy, but naive just didn’t work for you dude. Okay, I have to admit that I was pleasantly surprised by the first verse of his song but then it fell apart for me on the chorus. Sorry Not an Idol Fan. You’re wrong on this one.

David Radford idolizes Michael Buble’ but he is missing the charisma and comfortable way that Buble’ wears this genre. Cute kid, but I always feel like he’s impersonating a crooner rather than being one. Not to mention he totally weirded me out at the end. He was all stone faced and all the time the judges were speaking to him I had the overwhelming feeling that if he could strangle one of them he would. Then the dimples come out of nowhere for the camera. Spooky.

Chris Daughtry was my absolute favorite tonight. He nailed the song, the vocals, everything. How cool to have a Dad like that, hugh? Oh, but wait, how cool to have a husband like that! It was hot. He was hot. Just hot.

My favorites tonight? Well, no one held a candle to Chris. But I also liked Elliot, Gedeon, Sway, and Will. I can’t believe it, I never thought I would have predicted that bunch and I NEVER thought I would have a favorites list without Ace. I think I may have to go into mourning.

Gone this week. I think, and I hope, Kevin, David or Bucky. If not them I fear someone whose good might be gone.

Who do you think will leave Thursday night?
