‘American Idol’ nail biter tonight as final three perform three

Sorry about the late post folks. Unfortunately life gets in the way of American Idol sometimes and I just don’t like it!

Let’s begin by stipulating that Chris Daughtry went too soon. Let’s also stipulate that life isn’t always fair and it’s time to move on. There are still three extremely talented contestants left battling for the title of American Idol. Tonight they will sing a song of their choice, one chosen by the judges and one chosen by their potential future boss Clive Davis.

The top three, Elliot Yamin, Taylor Hicks and Katharine McPhee, took a quick jaunt home this weekend for a nice relaxing weekend before the last couple of weeks of the competition. Yeah, right! Did you see the press? Lunch with governors, grits with mayors and other officials, newspaper & TV interviews, visits to their high schools. AND they were supposed to be practicing their three songs for this week. I’ll bet these three are living on pure adrenaline.

Song choice. Here’s what I’ve seen.

By the judges:

Paula Abdul selected Bobby Caldwell’s What You Won’t Do For Love for Elliot. She could not have chosen a more ideal song for him, it’s so…Elliot.

Randy Jackson chose You Are So Beautiful by Joe Cocker for Taylor. Looks like Randy is looking for strong vocals here instead of showmanship.

There’s no confirmation on Kat’s song but rumors have Simon choosing Somewhere over the Rainbow. Of the three, this one worries me the most. Of course she can sing it but can she emote?

Clive chose:

Journey’s classic Open Arms is the song for Elliot. I Believe I Can Fly for Kat. Dancing in the Dark by Bruce Springsteen for Taylor (first time ever for “American Idol” to get permission to use a song by the Boss)

No word on what they are choosing. Anyone out there know? Katie? Karen? You two are always great sources for this stuff.

Here’s an interesting bit of Idol trivia. In all four seasons, a female has been eliminated in this round. Will that trend continue this year? We’ll all have to wait until Wednesday to find out.

After you vote by phone tonight, remember to vote on our Idol Polls at DaytonDailyNews.com.

PS – Okay, once more comment about Chris. Apparently Clive has already met with the rocker and the two will meet yet again to see about working together on a solo album for Chris. Clive has also expressed interest in Paris Bennett, so stay tuned for news from that front, as well.

Taylor should win because he can sing anything and everything. He has a great personality. He has never been in the bottom three. Katherine is great looking, but one or two good songs do not make a winner. It should be Taylor and Chris at the end.

Taylor should come out winning this…Kat on the other hand wheeew girl you need to give it a rest. You said it all when you sang “hound dog” and “somewhere over the rainbow” yep thats what you sound like and where you are.

The bottom line….The final two votes should be between Taylor & Elliott, one of them deserve to be finalist. A small edge for Taylor Hicks….

Mama Yamin supposedly gave an interview saying that Elliot’s personal choice song will be one by Ray Charles. I am very worried for Katharine tonight… “I Believe I Can Fly” is the cheesiest cheese that ever cheesed —YUCK. But if she sings “Over the Rainbow” with a Jane Monheit-like jazziness, well, that might be cool. My only prediction is that Taylor will be in the finals. Whether he is joined by Kat or by Elliott is up to their respective performances tonight, but I like both of them, so either way, I’ll be glad. I’m maybe rooting just a little harder for Elliot the regular guy underdog. :)

Katie, Thanks for the info. Try a Little Tenderness for Taylor is perfect. I can see it for his voice and also see it for his dancing. :)

According to my favorite AI spoiler source, Taylor Hicks will sing “Try a Little Tenderness” by Otis Redding for his personal song choice. And, now I hear that Katharine’s personal song choice is NOT “Man I Feel Like a Woman” by Shania Twain. Nothing else firm!!

Let us know what Chris has to say on Ellen. I’m very curious.

I’ve not heard their individual choices yet, but if I do, I’ll let you know. It should be a great show as always, and I’m really hoping that Elliot hits it out of the park tonight! On another note, Chris is on Ellen today, so I’ve set my DVR and I’ll watch it when I get home while dinner is in the oven. I’m interested to see what he has to say for himself. I love AI!

Taylor is in no danger at this point and is the favorite. “You Are So Beautiful” is an ideal choice for him, and I like the idea of “Dancing in the Dark.” Paula’s choice for Elliot is most approprate, but I’m not sure about “Open Arms.” Seems too high for Elliott, at least as Steve Perry sang it. Kat is the wild card in all of this. She must do not just well, but VERY well if she hopes to jump past Elliot. “Over the Rainbow” will be great as long as she sings it like Judy Garland did in the movie and doesn’t try to oversell it. Not thrilled with “I Believe I Can Fly.” Never cared for that song, and that’s the sort of “big ballad” number that Kat has struggled with lately. I’ve heard her choice is “Man, I Feel Like a Woman,” which I never liked either, but think she could sing well. Kat has bounced back before, I have faith that she could at least make final two. Yeah, I’m pimping my favorite, so sue me! :)
