Final seven compete - Mariah Carey Helps: ‘American Idol” latest update
With just seven left - the pressure is building as America votes for the next ‘American Idol.’
The special mentor this week is Mariah Carey as she is out and about hawking her current album E=Mc2. That said, Carey seemed truly interested in helping these young performers on to the next stage. Carey called American Idol “the boot camp of all musical boot camps.”
Tonight’s theme is Mariah as a mentor.

Tonight’s song - “When You Believe.”
Mariah’s Take - She just loves his voice.
My Take - The song seemed a little bigger than he was tonight. But what do I know.
Randy - “You picked on the thoughest songs. you can sing anything - that was the bomb baby.”
Paula - “You made her proud, very proud.”
Simon -” I thought it was very, very good.”
Carly Smithson
Tonight’s song - “Without You ”
Mariah’s Take - “I’ve been loving watching what you’re doing.”
My Take - Nice job! - she seemed like a pro tonight.
Randy -“I liked that you challenged yourself. You’ve got to believe in yourself. “
Paula - “I liked that you shared some vocal restraint. “
Simon - ” I don’t think you pulled it out on the night. I think you are over thinking everything. ”
Syesha Mercado
Tonight’s song - “Vanishing”
Mariah’s Take - “I thought she was really cool and did a great job.”
My Take - She’s got a great voice… but I always get that she is playing the part of singer… never really connecting with the audience.
Randy -“I like that you are bold. You did a good job on it - all things considered. “
Paula - “This week I think you’ve been extremely smart. Tonight was unbelievably magically. “
Simon - ” Technically it was very good indeed. ”
Brooke White
Tonight’s song - “There’s a Hero”
Mariah’s Take - ” I loved Brooke. I thought she was really genuine as a person.”
My Take - A little pitchy for me - it seemed like she sort of lost it in the middle… she was noticeably shaking.
Randy -” The bridge threw me a little.”
Paula - “Every ounce of you is truly authentic to who you are. “
Simon - “It was a bit like ordering a hamburger but only getting the bun. ”
Kristy Lee Cook
Tonight’s song - “Forever”
Mariah’s Take - “I got goose bumps after you sang this. “,br>
My Take - She seemed to get into a groove as the song moved along… but was it enough?
Randy -“I didn’t think that was amazing. “
Paula - ” I’m like blown away. “
Simon - “You didn’t give me chills. You managed with what you could. It wasn’t ever going to be an advantage for you. ”
David Cook
Tonight’s song - “Always be my Baby ”
Mariah’s Take - “It made me proud as a song writer.”
My Take - What was he thinking? It sounded like 80s rock… okay it’s getting a little better near the end…
Randy -” You are a hot recording artist. Randy stands up and claps.”
Paula - “You’re it. “
Simon - “It was like coming out of Karaoke hell into a breath of fresh air. ”
Jason Castro
Tonight’s song - “I don’t want to cry”
Mariah’s Take - “I’m looking forward to Jason’s performance and see if he’ll be using any of my suggestions.”
My Take - This was his weakest performance so far.
Randy -“I didn’t love it. I felt like I was at a weird beach Luau”
Paula - ” You’re getting so in that zone.”
Simon - ” Simon agreed with Paula. ”
The guys completely won the night. Mid way through the show Simon said - David Archuelta is the one to beat… do you agree?
The top performers were David Archuleta, Carly Smithson and David Cook. And the performers most likely to go were Syesha Mercado and Brooke White.

There has been much said about this being the most talented group yet - I disagree! There are 3 talented performers left - David A., Syesha M, and David C. The other three are surprisingly still here. Carly was much better earlier, but has fallen off the last several weeks. I’m still judging week to week, but would be greatly surprised if someone other than these top 3 performers wins. Unfortunately, it is a popularity contest & we have to depend upon those with the most callers remaining. I wish there was a panel of “Expert Judges” to determine who stays, after it got down to final 10 each year!

Well KLC left (Syesha’s next). Jason is having trouble staying on key, and Carly too. Brooke needs to go home after Syesha and/or Jason, then Carly. David A. should be 2nd and David Cook has to win. I will be buying David Cook’s songs, Always be my baby, Billie Jean, and more.

I think the bottom 3 should be Kristy, Jason, and Brooke! I agree with you Michael. Syesha can sing, but sometimes she doesn’t connect. But she is not the only one.

David Cook may just win this thing if the people keeping Jason Castro in would give it up. Seriously is vote for the worst at it again? Anyway, I thought David Cook’s version of “Always Be My Baby” was amazing. That’s one of my favorite MC songs and to hear him change it up and sing it like that. Wow. He did great.I didn’t catch all of David Archuleta’s performance but from the recap and his past performances, I don’t know that he’s got the star quality like Cook does. But even with that said, he’s definitely talented. The rest of them? Eh. Take ‘em or leave ‘em. They aren’t going to be in the final two at this point.

David Cook was the best of the night, hands down. The bottom three? Brooke, Carly and … David Archuleta. If the judges criticize Syesha for not connecting with the audience, they should say the same thing about David A.

What is it about Carly that Simon doesn’t like? Her tattoo’s? Is it the Brit vs. the Scot? I think she is awesome, I thought she did great, and he once again had nothing nice to say. It’s sickeningly obvious that he doesn’t like her. I think that is unfair to her. She’s great. Hope she makes it to the end. She reminds me of Amy Lee.

David Cook was great, again! I always look forward to hearing what he’s going to do, and he’s got a distinguishable sound, he’s an original. I would buy his music and hope he wins AI. David A. was good. Everyone else was okay.
