Is America voting for the vocal or the instrument on ‘American Idol’? Latest Update

So a man wiser than I posed a question I thought would make a great discussion topic - Does playing an instrument help or hurt you on ‘American Idol’ ?

Consider this - four of the performers who have played instruments in the top 12 are still alive— David Cook, David Archuleta, Brooke White and Jason Castro.

Was it the piano that saved Brooke White? during a recent juding night she had to start her vocal over - on another she seemed to struggle through the song while the piano-playing was spot on.

Jason Castro played the guitar and the ukulele during his recent performances… again, is it the instrument or the vocals America is voting for?

Same question here… although I think this guy may win the whole thing… David Cook the vocalist or the guitarist?

Last we have David Archuleta - one of the more polarizing contestants this season… He’s been referred to as the one to beat this season for the title of next American Idol… the question is, did the piano play a part in a couple of his weaker performances?

So, what do you think - Does playing an instrument help the contestants stay on American Idol?

Thoughts?

Maybe for some it did, however David A. only played the piano once so obviously it’s not the instrument for him. It’s definitely his talent and attitude and character and that pretty much sums it up.

Michael: Good for you for having an opinion. You have every right to think that David Archuleta is overrated. I don’t agree with your opinion. But I don’t have to. I could and would say that David Cook has been overrated! Just saying! Lets play nicely! The world is a big place and there is room for both of the Davids!

What’s the first thing you look at when they are singing the song with a guitar, piano, etc.? The instrument! I think that they should not have brought that in to AI. And… David A. to me is also a lil overrated. He has a good voice, but I think his cd would put me to sleep! You are not alone Michael!

Michael.DA overrated by who…. the thousands of fans that love him. Musical taste is personal to the listener so how is it possible to overrate an artist.

When the contestant is so familiar with playing while singing, the lack of an instrument may have a detrimental effect. I definitely think that Jason Castro is more comfortable with his guitar. DA may be overrated by some, but even a more balanced rating puts him in the finals.

I would have to say is that more people rate the contestants based on their performances and personality. I think for some people the 4 contestants show a difference side of who they are through playing instruments and people are drawn to that side of them. It also goes to show how talented they are musically (not only through their vocals) but it makes other people see their style of music. It’s like knowing what to expect when you watch their concerts. I think the singers connect more personaly to the song when they have something that they have control over which is their instruments or their own arrangements to the songs.

I think people do subconsciously put more stock into the performances where the singers play an instrument. I don’t know if that’s right or wrong- it just is. I think it may have helped Brooke and Jason stay in this long, but eventually the lack of range will be their downfall. D.C. is very good, but no way is D.A. overrated- the kid is WAAYY talented.. obviously just not your cup of tea, Michael.

I think the instruments have, indeed saved Brooke White and Jason Castro. David Cook is just good, so it doesn’t matter with him … and I still think David Archuleta is overrated.
