Final six and Andrew Lloyd Weber on ‘America Idol’ - Latest Update
While Earth Day has nothing to do with the theme tonight, ‘American Idol’ plans use green power during the finale, says Ryan Seacrest.
Taking the stage to perform this week is David Cook, Carly Smithson, Brooke White, David Archuleta, Jason Castro and Syesha Mercado.
The theme for tonight is the best of Broadway and the music of Andrew Lloyd Weber - They’ve added some instruments to the band - so this should sound good - but I can’t imagine Carly Smithson or Syesha Mercado singing Andrew Lloyd Weber… We’ll just have to wait and see what the magic of the night has in store.
If you were looking to cast your vote tonight Idol opened up two phone lines… hmmm, maybe there was something to the idea the Michael Johns went out due to the phones?
On to the show…
Syesha Mercado
Tonight’s song - ” One Rock and Roll Too Many ”
Andrew’s Take - I think she could well bring the house down.
My Take - Tonight’s theme is one that really works for Syesha - although she was still a little bit pitchy. Very good night for her - but was it enough?
Randy - ” This is your element - this is your best performance to date right there. “
Paula - ” This is your happy place. Sire Andrew Lloyd Weber was right - you brought the house down right at the beginning. ”
Simon -” That was very Sexy. This was one of your strongest performances so far. “
Jason Castro
Tonight’s song - ” Memories from Cats”
Andrew’s Take - Jason has made a very brave choice in taking this song.
My Take - I think he needs an instrument to carry him along… that was the weakest performance of the season. He might be going home this week.
Randy - ” Vocally for me it was a little bit of a train wreck. Too much melody for me for you. “
Paula - ” It was a wise choice to do this song. It sounds like a pop ballad. ”
Simon -” It came over as a young guy forced to sing a song at wedding… it was a struggle. “
Brooke White
Tonight’s song - “You Must Love Me ”
Andrew’s Take -I don’t think that girl had a clue about what she was singing about.
My Take - OMG - yet another night of having to start over… this could be the end for her this week… Once again without an instrument… she isn’t the same performer.
Randy - ” Vocally it was a little tough. “
Paula - ” Silence… You must never start and stop. What i loved about your performance is that you didn’t over act.”
Simon - “Your voice was staining in the middle… I think you are going to be very disappointed when you watch this back. “
David Archuleta
Tonight’s song - “Think of Me. ”
Andrew’s Take - The song was written for a diva… I simply could not imagine how a boy could sing that song. Little
David has a musical soul…
My Take - This sounds more like a pop song rather than a song from the Phantom of the Opera. and after the talk - he almost kept his eyes open. WOW! David was so on tonight.
Randy - ” What is really cool… this is what this show is all about.. if you can sing you can sing anything. This is a really big night for you. Dude it was the bomb - This boy is the one to beat. “
Paula - ” I think it was absolutely perfect. You talk a risk… ”
Simon -“I thought it was pleasant and one of your weakest performances over the live shows… it is just not one of those performances you are going to remember - It was forgettable for me. “
Carly Smithson
Tonight’s song - ” Jesus Christ Superstar”
Andrew’s Take - You’ve got to go for a song you can live in… that fits your voice… that you can inhabit (good thing for her he was there or she might be going).
My Take - ALW was right… this was a song for her. That was one of her better nights on Idol! WOW! (okay that was two WOWs tonight)
Randy - “It was definitely good… I like the outfit. “
Paula - ” I love so much it was so unexpected. ”
Simon -” It was actually one of my favorite performances of the night.”
David Cook
Tonight’s song - “Music of the Night ”
Andrew’s Take - Most sexy song I’ve ever written. If David can get some of the raw passion… he might just bring this off - maybe it will work.
My Take - It would have been more believable for me, had David worn a different costume and lost the scarf from his side pocket… it was like a rocker trying to sing opera… It just didn’t work for him or me!
Randy - ” I said it before… if you can sing you can sing… that was an amazing vocal performance. “
Paula - ” I thought it was fantasic.”
Simon -” This is not the side of you I like… it was too rounded off. You made the most of the song for you. “
America, after tonight’s performances who will go? Can you say Brooke White or Jason Castro?

David Cook was the best last night. He proved his versatility by singing ALW song broadway/operatic style. He hit the high notes flawlessly with the purest of tones, and he actually echoed on his last high note. I predict great things for David Cook. David A. did a great job of covering up his forgotten words, and that is not a talent that should be forgotten. Jason surprised me by singing one of the hardest songs I personally have ever tried to sing (I tried when I was in better voice when I was younger). Jason pretty much hit all the notes, and added some soul. I think he deserves to stay around at least another week. Brooke should go home this week and Carly next week, in my opinion. It is not okay to stop and start a song. Brooke was so scared her vocal chords locked up and she couldn’t stay on key. Carly did better with her song, but still too screechy for me. David Cook (the next Beatle) for the win.By Fed Up

Craig, I agree with you on David A. far as the free pass. I seen that other people want Syesha to go home on the poll. I don’t get it. I also agree with you Hillary. If someone else gets voted off before Jason or Brooke, I wouldn’t want to watch it anymore. I also agree that if David A. doesn’t sing something else besides ballads, he is going to get real old real quick. If no one else has noticed, David has sang ballads, standing in the middle of the stage(stiff)with his eyes closed the whole season! The only thing different is that he sings with emotion. That’s why people like him.By Steve

Jason sung himself off the show last night until Brooke gave up. Basically, she cannot handle the pressure nor criticism. Syesha probably sung herself into the top three and sex does sell!! David A. needs to sing something besides ballads or it will be David C. and Syesha as final two.By Edy

I liked Brooke and her start over. She’s gotta place somewhere in music or theatre. I think Syesha is a Whitney Houston copy. David A can sing but no emotion. Jason? EEESH! Go Home Already! Carly was smart to listen to ALW. If she had smiled less and showed the correct emotion of the song she would have been perfect. David C was very good and did it classically well but rocked out on the last note! I loved it. Jason? Go Home!!!!!By Edy

I agree with Michael about Syesha. She will be on Broadway within a year (maybe 2 - there is the Idol tour first of course). If Brooke or better yet, Jason doesn’t got home this week, I may stop watching until he does. Jason butchered that song. He could have at least listened to a recording of it or something instead of acting completely dumb about musical theatre. And Brooke… well Evita is one of my favorites… Madonna did it better. As did every actress that’s performed it on stage in the past. Ever.By Michael

I think it should be Jason, but Brooke easily could go for her screw-up. Syesha and Carly were the best two. David Archuleta always bothers me. It was a bad theme night for most … except this proves that Syesha is destined for Broadway, where she will do fine.By Craig

I must agree with Shantei that Jason, Brooke & David A were the worst of the nite! I’ll give David A a free pass since he has done done so well on most nights. If anyone other than Jason or Brooke goes home, it proves that this is more of a popularity contest than talent competition (It shows on this site as well - how else can you explain some local voters thinking Syesha should go home - she was by far, the best tonite!)By Craig

Craig, this week was boring to me! Everyone but Syesha and Carly sung something depressing! Syesha was great! Carly was awesome, and I am so glad she listened to Weber’s advice. Jason looked super nervous and didn’t sound good at all. Poor Brooke, that was twice. If someone else is off before her, I would be disgusted with America. David A. was boring, and he wanted to close his eyes sooo bad! David C. was okay, but has been better. My bottom 3 would be Brooke, Jason, and David A. with Brooke going home.
