‘American Idol’ - Suicide hits close to home for Paula Abdul - Update
Late Wednesday (Nov 12), various news outlets were reporting that Paula Goodspeed, a 2005 Idol contestant and self-proclaimed Paula Abdul super-fan, had apparently committed suicide outside Abdul’s California home.
TMZ is reporting that local police had foiled an earlier suicide attempt by Goodspeed near Abdul’s home.
People magazine is reporting that Goodspeed’s first name was really Sandra, but went by Paula as a show of devotion to Abdul. Goodspeed’s license plate read “ABL LV” who some have suggested stands for Abdul Love. Allegedly other Adbul items were reported to have been found in the car including a picture of Abdul that was hanging from the rearview mirror.
In a statement released by her publicist Abdul said, “I am deeply shocked and saddened at what transpired yesterday. My heart and prayers go out to her family.”
Regardless of how you might feel about Paula Abdul and her performance as a judge on ‘American Idol,’ she’s the one judge who always has a kind word to say to the contestants about their efforts. This is in sharp contrast to Simon Cowell, who’s sharply worded criticisms have made him one of the most loathed judges of any of the reality TV shows.
With the new season of ‘American Idol’ just a few months away… I have to wonder if this event will bring out a slightly more refined and gentle ‘American Idol…’ I’d guess not.

People that enter this competition know what Simon is like, and at the end of the day it is Simon himself that has to live with the possibility his insults could lead to someone taking their life. The braces comment was definitely below the belt and was purely ratings material that backfired.
