Which songs do you hate?

It struck me as funny the other morning when we had the radio on during our morning routine and my wife slapped it off when Kool and the Gang’s “Celebration” came on … especially since I’d started to happily hum along.

“Whatdeheck?” I said.

“I hate that song,” she said.

“You can’t hate that song. Nobody hates it.”

“All right, but I’ve heard it too many times.”

And then I knew what she meant. There are, indeed, many many fine songs that all of us have simply heard tooooooo many times, to the point that even though you like them OK, you just don’t need to hear them any more.

High on my list: “Stairway to Heaven,” “Hey Jude,” and “Rocket Man.” Don’t dislike ‘em. Just won’t listen to ‘em anymore.

What’s on your list?

Hey Ron, One of Ann Stevens’ Beatlemaniacs here. Hey Jude sets you off, ‘eh? Funny, I hear that only occasionally on Ann’s Sunday morning show. What I do hear too much by THE BEST ROCK AND ROLL BAND EVER would have to be Come Together. It is played all during the week. Too often. Damn shame, too. Now, watch your Beatle Bashing in you columns, okay? We’re a peaceful bunch, however… ;)

“Walking on Sunshine” by Katrina and the Waves. It must be a law somewhere that this song has to appear in every chick flick and/or Disney movie. So overplayed!

Anything by Lynyrd Skynyrd. Apparently some Cincinnati radio stations still think they are a new and upcoming band judged by the amount of spins they get each week…

Vick…I’ve read your blog and enjoy your insights, but why Jim Croce? Have you listened past “Bad Bad Leroy Brown”

I encourage you to go to iTunes and at least look at some of my suggestions… bad radio or not, these alternatives really rock!

I agree with all of your choices - but then you must remember, it not necessarily bad music, IT’S BAD RADIO that has caused us to hate these songs.

Sometimes, a new take on an old tune can be fabulous. Consider: “Angie,” by Tori Amos. “Satisfaction,” by Cat Power. “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” by Tori Amos or Patti Smith. “One,” by Cowboy Junkies. “Let it Be,” by Joan Baez. “Oooh, Child,” by Beth Orton. “Somewhere Over The Rainbow,” by Tori Amos or Israel Kamakawiwo’ole. “Here Comes The Sun,” by Nina Simone. “I Don’t Like Mondays,” by Tori Amos. “Romeo and Juliet” by Indigo Girls. “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” by Aretha Franklin. “Son of a Preacher Man,” by Joan Osborne. “When Doves Cry,” by Ani Difranco or The Be Good Tanyas. “Tangled Up In Blue,” by Indigo Girls. “The Joker,” by k.d. lang. “Black Coffee,” by k.d. lang. “Everybody Wants to Rule the World,” by Patti Smith. “Helpless,” by Patti Smith. “Soul Kitchen,” by Patti Smith. “Take Me to the River,” by Annie Lennox. “Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee,” by the Indigo Girls. “How Sweet It Is,” by Joan Osborne. “Come As You Are,” by Laura Love. “Cold, Cold Heart,” by Norah Jones, which begs a mention of the Breeders singing “I Can’t Help It,” originally by Hank Williams. “Jolene,” by The White Stripes. This is the tip o’ the ole iceberg. If you like a song, but have come too accustomed to its original artist singing it, go to iTunes right now and look these tunes up. Let me know if there are others I neglected to mention (my short attention span could only name those tunes that came off the top of my head)…

I understand the sentiment about “Hey Jude,” Ron, but I still take exception to it. I sing backing vocals on Paul’s 1990 live version. ;) As for a song I actively hate, “Yummy Yummy Yummy” by the Ohio Express always makes me want to throw the radio out the window. To this day, I don’t think I’ve heard the song all the way through. For a song I like but am tired of, I pick “Hotel California. ” Great song, but man, is it overplayed on the radio. If I never heard it again, I wouldn’t care, but I know I will. I can check out anytime I like, but the song will never leave.

“Everything I Do (I Do It For You” by Bryan Adams. Not only was it overplayed when it came out, but it also is the marking point where Adams lost his way and forgot how to rock, and he still hasn’t remembered how to rock to this day.

YMCA… I’m over it. Everyone knows it, burn all copies! I’d be fine to never heard it again. That also goes for the chicken dance, macarena, electric slide and cha-cha slide. Ugh.

where do i begin? “that’s the way - uh huh, uh huh, i like it”; “stuck in the middle with you”; “another one bites the dust”; “bad to the bone”; “whiter shade of pale”; “jump around”; “dude (looks like a lady”; “i’m too sexy”; “wannabe”; let me pose a question on the other side of this? why is it i never tire of “eine klein nacht muzik,” or pachelbel canon or beethoven’s 9th or le notte de figaro?

And how could I forget? The Ohio State Fight Song and Hang on Slooopy (grin/duck.) Like a Rock. I can’t believe I’d admitting the next two - gulp - Who Are You and Won’t Get Fooled Again. Sweet Home Alabama, Knights in White Satin.

You have hit a nerve here. After working in record stores where turntable domination was an art form in the worst way, there are many on my list. Jumpin’ Jack Flash, More Than A Feeling, Wanted Dead or Alive, We Are Family, I Will Always Love You, I’m Easy, Endless Love, The Wall, Aqualung, anything by Styx, Takin’ Care of Business, Let It Ride, Carol of the Bells … too much fun.
