Less jazz on our airwaves

You probably heard by now that Clear Channel swapped the soft jazz on 106.5 FM to yet another country station…

I got a note from a jazz fan expressing remorse that seemed worth sharing…

Mr. Rollins,

In case you weren’t aware, Clear Channel has switched the Dayton Smooth Jazz station 106.5 to a country music format. This occurred on Friday May 1 and this station is now known as The Bull. I say BS!

My wife and I are extremely disappointed with Clear Channel’s decision, as we thoroughly enjoy smooth jazz music. I’m sure other loyal listeners of WDSJ feel the same way. Besides, don’t we have a sufficient number of country music stations in this market?

Thank you, Larry, Bellbrook

OK, I admit that I only listen to smooth jazz every once in a while, and usually only at night in the car. I’m more a jazz-jazz guy, if you know what I mean, and like what I get on WYSO-FM, though that’s only Tuesdays.

So, it’s worth asking: What do you think of the change? Have you had a chance to listen to the new country station? Will you miss WDSJ?

Okay- so I’m really excited to know that I’m not crazy. My wonderful jazz station did disappear. How sad is that? I am so clueless about artists and song names, but I absolutely LOVED this station. It was my way of relaxing every day and occasionally if I had to be out at night, I found a cozy sense of calm listening to this station. So now I am extremely stuck- because I don’t even know where to begin to find the artists that I love. Please reconsider and I will keep checking.

I also miss the jazz channel. While I was trying to get the station my friend called to complain that he couldn’t get the station either and we wondered what had happened. Now that we don’t like county music but we are already able to get several country music stations. Now we can’t find a good jazz station at all and are forced to gather jazz cd’s to carry wherever we go. It is very inconvienent to have to take them and remove them each time we leave the car for fear of breakin. I sincerely hope that we can get another jazz station soon. I hear songs that I like and get the titles and artist and that is how I purchase my jazz c’d. Oh how it hurts to have lost this station.

It’s not surprising, this area cannot support any type of jazz. Don’t forget WDPS 100am to 1200pm everyday for a taste of the real thing.

I was really unhappy to see it go. When I flipped to it and suddenly heard country, I was appalled. WDSJ was one of a kind around here. I loved listening to Billy Raven on my late drive home. While I didn’t have it on all the time, it was the most pleasant thing to listen to when there was nothing else on. The sad thing? I now have more available presets on my car radio than there are good stations in this area to listen to. I replaced WDSJ with a Cincinnati classic rock station — and I already have 104.7 and 95.3 on there. Bring back GOOD radio, Clear Channel! Not this national no-personality no-local-ties crap.

I was terribly disappointed with Clear Channel’s decision to remove Smooth Jazz from the airwaves. I have not found another venue to replace it - I do not have HD radio in my home or car and using the computer to listen is not convenient. Dayton did not need another country format.

I, too ,will miss Dayton Smooth Jazz. We do not have any other smooth jazz stations, but country stations are all over our area. What a terrible decision this was.

While strictly speaking, smooth jazz is not jazz in the usual sense, however, I liked hearing any jazz sprinkled in as my work truck only has radio. So, yes I will miss WDSJ.

I was devastated to hear that Smooth Jazz was off the air! That is the only station I have consistently listened to while driving. Even my teenagers wouldn’t turn the channel when they drove my car. It was always such a relaxing diversion from the stress of driving. I seriously don’t know how I will survive without it. I guess I’ll just use my iPod from now on. No other station is worth listening to during drivetime.

I was very dissappointed to see the smooth jazz format was gone. I really enjoyed it.

I also am extremely disappointed - I listened to it all the time - it was my “wake-up” station on the radio, and listened to it on the way home from a stressful day’s work. I don’t believe there is anything else out there. Guess I better stock up on some CDs….

Smooth jazz was my favorite channel to listen to on my commute to work. I like some country music but smooth jazz helped me to unwind and relax. This is extremely disappointing!!!
