Blog fatigue?

Ran across an interesting story this morning from the Associated Press about some polling that suggests young people are starting to grow tired of a medium that they once actively, enthusiastically embraced: The blog.

Seems that other social networking media such as Facebook and Twitter, with their short and quick status updates, are taking the place of blogs in young folks’ affections and interest.

If this is true, I wonder if it’s all that surprising — not because flashy new things always fade with time, but because blogs are per se designed for writing, and because not that many people are writers. My guess is lots of people, old and young, tried blogging because it seemed cool, but that many of them didn’t really have the writerly itch and urge that makes somebody a real writer. Oh yeah, and talent.

A bit of selectivity in terms of content generation on the Web might be a good thing, and fewer blogs might actually not be such a bad thing — and please, withhold your comments about the world being a better place without this one, OK?

What do you think?

As you know, I’m certainly not a “young person” but a big part of “technology” is starting to wear me out. It’s Technology Fatigue. You know, the whole thought that because it’s out there and new and temporarily hot and it’s better than sliced bread and…and…and…that we have to have it and participate and…and…and…if we don’t we’re so yesterday and so old-fashioned…aaaggghhh! I would be OK with the new socio/techno advancements slowing to an acceptable roar and society picking, say, two of them to go with, and disposing of the rest. I can’t imagine that, right now, more is better and is of benefit to society. Hopefully, young people become tired of more than the blog. While many of the mediums might be intriguing, they simply aren’t necessary. Additionally, I would offer that young people aren’t writers BECAUSE OF texting, twittering, Facebooking, and all other mediums that are cause for bad grammar, bad spelling, bad language, and more. As for me, I still subscribe to the print version of DDN! And, obviously, I’m OK with the blog thing, too! Especially this one.
