TweetSave money while doing laundry
Most of us have to do laundry, but we don’t have to spend a lot doing it.
About.com offers the following tips for saving money in the laundry room:
Use cold water and the right cycle: Cold water and today’s detergents will take care of most of your laundry needs. Hot water is only needed for items where bacteria growth can occur — cotton underwear, towels and bed linens.
Do full loads, back-to-back: Every time the washer runs, it should be full. You’ll save time and money. And if you are using the dryer, you’ll save money by not having to bring up the heat level for each load. You’ll use the residual heat and save money.
Use the right amount of the right detergent: When purchasing detergent, always look at the number of loads that can be done for that size container. Do a bit of math in your head, and you may find a better bargain. Read the directions on how much detergent to use.
Use a clothesline: Drying clothing outside not only saves money on your utility bill, it also saves money by being more gentle on your clothing. If you can’t dry laundry outside, use an indoor drying rack or clothesline.
Use vinegar and baking soda: No need to pay for higher priced additives for the laundry. Vinegar is great for reducing static cling. Just add a cup of white vinegar to the final rinse. For softer sheets and towels, add one-fourth cup of baking soda to the wash cycle.
Use home dry cleaning kits: Home dry cleaning kits are much less expensive than commercial cleaners, easy to use and do a great job of freshening clothes. You’ll be able to reduce your trips to the cleaners and save money.
Wear clothing more than once: The most effective way to save money in your laundry room is to just do less of it. Wearing your clothes more than once — especially items such as jeans and light jackets — before tossing them in the dirty pile is the first step.

TweetTop 10 tips for saving money on taxes
Roni Deutch, tax expert and author of “The Tax Lady’s Guide to Beating the IRS: And Saving Big Bucks on Your Taxes,” has tips to offer for getting the return you want.
Here are her top 10 tips for preparing your return:
Clean, correct, current and complete Use good recordkeeping habits and a computer to complete your return and you will have gotten yourself off to a fabulous start.
Right forms in the right order Using the right forms and putting them in sequential order makes it easier for the IRS to quickly read and review - which is what you want!
Use the correct filing status The wrong tax category could cost you plenty in credits and deductions.
Claim all of your allowable exemptions At $3,500 per exemption, that is a pretty penny to kiss away.
Don’t use round numbers Rounded numbers is a big red flag that the taxpayer is estimating the numbers and may increase your chance for an audit.
Double check your math Make sure to pay special attention to the Earned Income tax credit and Child tax credit—they are most often calculated incorrectly.
Sign your return Yes, it seems like an obvious point. But the IRS says unsigned tax returns are one of the most common taxpayer miscues.
File and pay on time and avoid penalties You must pay at least 90% of your tax due by April 15 to avoid penalties
If you are not ready, file an extension File IRS Form 4868 and you will get until Oct. 15 to file and avoid a late filing penalty.
Keep a copy of your return For at least 6 years after filing your return, retain a copy just in case.

TweetWays to save money when you are sick
About.com noted today, Feb. 26, that there are ways of to save money even when you are fighting a cold.
The site recommends that you:
Buy Generic: Most brand-name over-the-counter medications are available in generic form as well. Just check the active ingredient lists. You will likely save quite a bit of money and it will be just as effective.
Try Saline Spray First: Rather than trying an expensive nasal decongestant, try saline spray first and irrigate your sinuses. You can buy saline spray over the counter for little money or, to save even more, you can make your own. It can relieve congestion and even prevent a sinus infection.
Get a Flu Shot: One ounce of prevention and all that. … Even though a flu shot can cost up to $35, it can be a good investment. In the long run, you will save more money by not missing work, not buying as many other medications and not taking as many trips to the doctor.
Check Your Symptoms: Read up on your symptoms online and try to figure out if you really need to make that trip to the doctor.
Try Treating it at Home: Typically, colds don’t require a visit to the doctor, they can’t do anything to make it better anyway.
Skip the Pricey Antiviral Meds: Unless you or a family member is at significant risk for serious complications, there probably isn’t any reason to take an antiviral medication if you get the flu.

TweetTGI Fridays, Ruby Tuesday 2-for-1 deals
USA Today had a good story today, Feb. 26, about the proliferation of two-for-one offers in many industries these days — from restaurants to retailers to telecommunications companies.
Even some car dealers and home sellers are testing twofers.
The deals, also known as “buy one, get one free” offers, are a way for retailers to avoid price discounting — which is hard to reverse once folks get used to lower prices. Limited-time “twofers” also play on the current consumer need to feel OK about spending money on anything.
Some of the offers that affect us in the Dayton area concern restaurants such as TGI Fridays, as referenced earlier this week in Mark Fisher’s Taste blog here at the Dayton Daily News, and Ruby Tuesday. Those restaurants are both offering buy one meal get one meal free deals.
Fisher had many other routes to area restaurant deals on his blog as well.
USA Today also talked about the Men’s Wearhouse, which has offered a two-for-one special on hundreds of men’s suits at $399 and up for about three months.
Also, Verizon Wireless has offered two-for-one phone promos before, but for the first time it’s offering BlackBerrys, spokesman Jim Gerace says. A two-year contract is required.
And on the more extreme end of twofer deals, car dealer in Wisconsin, Russ Darrow Group car dealerships, offered consumers a pricey new car or truck can get a “free” used car worth up to $10,000. “We are trying to unload our inventory of new vehicles,” owner Russ Darrow says. “We had to be aggressive.”
Also, last summer, San Diego home builder Michael Crews even had a “Buy one home, get one free” offer. Folks who bought a $1.6 million estate home would get a $399,900 row home for “free.”
There were no takers, according to marketing director Dawn Berry, but it created lots of buzz and additional foot traffic.

TweetFishing toys, bubble guns recalled
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced Wednesday, Feb. 25, that Fishing Games, Rattles, Pull-A-Long Cars, Mini Pull Back Cars, and Cartoon Bubble Guns made by the CBB Group, based in Commerce, Calif.
The toys were sold at dollar stores nationwide from July 2007 through December 2008 for between $1 and $5.
The toys are being recalled because the fishing games, baby rattles and pull-a-long cars contain small parts, which can detach and pose a choking hazard to children.
The mini pull back cars and bubble guns are being recalled because they have surface paints which contain excessive levels of lead, violating the federal lead paint standard.
Consumers should take the recalled products away from young children immediately and return them to the place where purchased for a full refund.
For more information, contact CBB Group at (866) 628-6238, or visit the firm’s Web site at www.cbbgroup.com.

TweetGet ‘Wize’ — compare products for free
Consumer Reports is a great resource, but its biggest drawback is that its information is by subscription only — in its magazine and online.
But, with consumer Web sites popping up every day to help us shoppers, Consumer Reports is hardly the only game in town.
One site that is great for comparing specific items is wize.com (note the “z” rather than an “s”). On that site, you can plug in a product and note what aspect is most important to you, and it will spit out what it has found to be the best models.
For instance, I plugged in “telescopes” (my 7-year-old’s birthday is next month) and chose “ease of use” as my top priority. The site listed its top five telescopes and the more than 100 reviews for those five.
If they haven’t already, I bet the folks over at Consumer Reports are starting to rethink their payment plans about now.

And, if you visit Cottonelle’s Web site and print off a 50 cent coupon for the toilet paper, Kroger will double it, making the toilet paper free. You can print the coupon twice.
This sale continues as supplies last.
Also, Apryl notes that Walgreens has a coupon in their weekly flier to purchase Reynolds Wrap Aluminum Foil (20 feet) for 89 cents.
And, if you match this with the dollar off coupon in the Feb. 8 Smartsource coupon insert, the foil is free. Some stores will not accept coupons with overages, so be sure to check your store.

Here are some additional airline shopping tools the site recommends:
Farecast.com: Track a specific flight over time, see graphs that help you choose the least expensive dates to fly, or just see where it’s cheapest to go right now. Sort of fun even if you’re not planning a trip.
Seatguru — Identifies the best seats on various aircraft. Never smell that awful bathroom smell again.

TweetPCA outbreak has sickened more than 660
The outbreak of salmonella traced to peanut products is continuing, although it has slowed.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said as of Tuesday, Feb. 24, that the outbreak has sickened more than 660 people. It has been linked to nine deaths.
“To date, 19 clusters of infections in five states have been reported in schools and other institutions, such as long-term care facilities and hospitals. King Nut brand peanut butter was present in all facilities,” the CDC said in a statement.
King Nut is produced by Peanut Corp. of America, which has gone into bankruptcy and closed two plants in Georgia and Texas after inspectors traced the salmonella outbreaks to them, according to Reuters.
Reportedly, FBI officials in Atlanta and Virginia said this week they had joined the FDA in a criminal investigation of the PCA. Members of Congress have pledged to reform the FDA’s food inspection program.
Just a few lingering peanut butter recalls to post today, Feb. 25.
For the full list, as always, see the FDA Web site at www.fda.gov.

TweetConsignment store has 50 percent off sale
Sandi’s Clothes Encounters, a consignment store at 521 S. Dixie Drive in Vandalia, is having a 50 percent off sale on many items in their already discounted inventory.
The friendly, efficient store sells new and gently used women’s clothes and shoes. The clothes are sizes 0 to 30.
Sandi Pfennig, the owner of the shop, said after an item is consigned it has three months to be sold. It is priced at a discount initially, and is marked down each month that it is not sold.
On the third month, it is marked down 50 percent, so therefore the store has a rolling selection of items that are 50 percent off their already discounted prices.
If the item is not sold after three months, it is then donated to a battered women’s shelter.
The store is definitely worth checking out.
There will be more about Sandi’s Clothes Encounters and other area deals in Sunday’s Dayton Daily News Life section.

TweetLearn a sweet skill at big discount
Our crafty Deals Teamer from Miamisburg, Karen Baird, reports today, Feb. 24, that Michael’s is offering Wilton cake decorating classes in March for 50 percent off.
Classes range from Course I (where you learn the basics of cake decorating, such as shell borders and icing roses) to Course III (where you learn about constructing tiered cakes and making more intricate icing flowers, like lilies).
Karen, who took the Wilton Course I in April 2007 at Jo-Ann, also said that those starting out will need some basic supplies. But she said with all the 40 percent off coupons you can get from the Michael’s, Jo-Ann, and Hobby Lobby ads (check out Sunday’s Dayton Daily News), you shouldn’t have to pay full price for any supplies.
These coupons provide a savings of $40 or more.
You’ll also have to bake some cakes for the class, so stock up on Pillsbury cake mix this week while it’s on sale for $1 a box at Meijer and Cub Foods.
For Michael’s locations and class schedules, contact your local store or visit michaels.com.

Dana Clayton of Vandalia said this week Target has Wii and Nintendo DS games for $10.
Of course, she notes, not all titles are that price, but they have a lot of discounted games to choose from.
Also, Dana said that at the Salem Avenue Target had PSP and Playstation 2 games for that price as well, but those games were not listed at the Sugarcreek Twp. store.
Since most games range from $14.99 to $59.99, $10 is a great deal.

TweetAdvantage to recession: Fewer shark bites
Think about it … with fewer people on the beach, there are fewer folks for sharks to gnaw on.
At least that’s the conclusion being drawn by George Burgess, director of the International Shark Attack File, which is part of the Florida Museum of Natural History on the University of Florida campus in Gainesville.
Burgess told CNN that shark attacks on humans were at the lowest levels in half a decade last year, and that hard economic times may be to blame … or credit.
Fewer people in the water, he said, means fewer chances for sharks to attack. And fewer people these days, especially outside of the United States, have the resources to go to the beach.
Sharks reportedly attacked 59 people in 2008, which was the lowest number of attacks since 57 in 2003, according to Burgess. There were 71 attacks in 2007.
“One can’t help but think that the downturn in the economy played a part in it,” Burgess said.

TweetWays to save money at a sporting event
The Consumerist Web site had a nugget this weekend from their Frugal Dad writer, talking about ways to save money at sporting events, since they have become a huge money pit in the last 10 years or so.
So I threw some of my own tips in with Frugal Dad’s (FD), and here’s what we suggest:
Eat Before You Go: FD: Don’t pay $8 for a 50 cent hot dog when you can pregame with a small meal instead.
I agree you shouldn’t get a whole meal at the stadium pretty much ever. Fill up before the game, and then if you want to get a treat for the kids or yourself (what is baseball without beer?) you can be a little indulgent without it feeling like you are breaking the bank.
Pack Your Own Drinks And Snacks: FD: We know, you’re not supposed to bring in outside food or drinks. Whatever. Here’s how to do it: find a backpack and put your well-wrapped food and drinks in at the bottom. Next, get your dirty laundry, preferably things like socks that stink. Add that to the top. Present your bag of fun to the security guard and you’ll be through in no time.
I don’t usually pack my own stuff except bottled water, which is OK (if sealed) at most stadiums. If you are full from your pregame meal anyway, water might be all you need.
Don’t Eat Out Afterward: FD: You’ve pregamed and snacked at the game, don’t ruin everything by going out for a meal afterward.
I agree. Or, if you didn’t get a treat at the game, get the kiddies an ice cream cone at McDonald’s on the way home.
Watch It On TV: FD: With all your snacks and drinks waiting for you at home, why bother leaving? Gather everyone around the TV and have a family night instead.
I agree with that as well, and would go one step further and say that some sports are even better at home:
Professional football games are often freezing and the stadiums are huge, so the best seat in the house is often on your couch.
Professional and minor-league baseball games are great to see at the park — especially a Dayton Dragons game, where the whole event is an experience. And my family loves to watch the Reds as well.
Basketball games vary. College games, like at UD Arena, can be awesome and you feel a part of the action. Pro games, like watching the Cavs at Quicken Loans Arena, makes you feel more detached due to the size of the venue.
Hockey games can be fun in person if only for the crowd, but the puck is harder to see the higher you go up in the seats.
But that’s just my two cents. What do you think? Which sports are worth the cost to see in person?

TweetNikeStore has extra 25% off clearance items
DealNews has good news for folks who like stuff from Nike.
The deals site has a coupon code that will get you an extra 25 percent off items in their clearance section, which are marked down up to 75 percent.
The big question you always have to ask yourself with these sales is, were these items so overpriced to begin with that even with the big sales they aren’t worth it? And then it comes down to how much you like the item and are willing to pay.
For instance, I went through the process to make sure it worked. I found a $50 pair of shoes I liked on sale for $39.99, which I then got down to $29.99 using this code.
However, after shipping costs (orders are free if they total more than $175 — not happening), the price went back up to $37.99. It is still a savings, but it is not so unbelievable that I am going to buy them when I don’t really need them. And this was an item on clearance, with a coupon code.
It just all depends on what you are really looking for.

TweetRecession felt in Beverly Hills, but house in Bel-Air for sale for $85 million
There was a story on CNN on Monday, Feb. 23, about how the recession is being felt even in posh, protected areas such as Beverly Hills, Calif.
In the story, Beverly Hills officials say they expect tax revenues to drop by about $24 million over the next 16 months due to fewer sales.
They say, as far as they know, that’s the biggest single blow to the city budget in Beverly Hills’ 93-year history.
WalletPop also noted Monday that the Los Angeles real estate market was down 35 percent year over year and nationally, and that recent data suggests that the foreclosure epidemic has hit luxury housing harder than more moderate real estate.
However, there are always exceptions to the rule.
As WalletPop also noted in their story, real estate developer Mohamed Hadid is asking $85 million for his 48,000-square-foot mansion in Bel-Air — just a hop, skip and a gold-plated jump from Beverly Hills and flailing Los Angeles.
According to the Wall Street Journal, Hadid says he paid about $7.5 million for the land about six years ago and another $59 million building the home for his own use. The home features a ballroom with seating for 200 people and seven fountains along with a Turkish hammam.

TweetSuper savings at Elder-Beerman, Macy’s
Deals Team member Donna Slattery of Dayton reported on some great sales over the weekend. She said she bought two dresses at Macy’s, each originally $120, for around $20 each.
The first one is a Jessica Howard dress, jumper style, with a fully lined jacket; and the second is an Evan Picone dress, fully lined with cap sleeves.
Macy’s was having a one-day sale Saturday, but Donna said they still have a great many items on clearance at the store.
Also this weekend at Elder-Beerman, Donna found a satin theater suit, fully lined, that was originally $244. She paid just $24.
She said Elder-Beerman was selling items for 80 percent off already marked down prices as they cleared out their winter inventory.
Overall, with a few other purchases thrown in, Donna said she spent less than $100 and got more than $600 worth of merchandise this weekend.
See what those stores still have to offer — it may be worth your while as well.

TweetPCA: Customers should go directly to FDA
On Friday, Feb. 20, the Peanut Corp. of America announced that because of its bankruptcy proceedings, it is no longer able to communicate with customers of recalled products.
The PCA said customers who received products from its Georgia or Texas plants should not distribute or further use those products.
The PCA recommended that customers contact the FDA regarding the proper disposition of recalled products and any other matters related to the recall via the FDA recall coordinators.
To date, more than 2,100 products in 17 categories have been voluntarily recalled by more than 200 companies, according to the Food and Drug Administration, and the list continues to grow.
The FDA and the Texas Department of State Health Services are working together to implement the PCA recall.
The complete recall list can be found on the FDA Web site.
The latest products recalled are:

TweetAmerican Express to customers: Please leave
This is a new one.
CreditMatters.org reports that American Express is offering select customers a $300 American Express prepaid card and a virtual hearty handshake if they pay their balances in full by April 30. This move would then close their accounts.
American Express is saying that they are making this offer to help customers “simplify their finances,” but, not surprisingly, it also benefits AmEx.
Customers must pay off their balance by April 30 to get the card, but regardless of whether they pay it off in time, AmEx will still close the account and expect payments.
As Credit Matters notes:
You may be wondering why American Express doesn’t just close the accounts of these customers, which would save American Express $300. Here’s why: the $300 prepaid card is acting as an incentive for the customer to pay down the balance in an expeditious manner. The customer has exactly two months to get that balance paid off; if he or she does, the $300 card is theirs. Not a bad strategy by American Express.
Something else to remember, as noted by The Wall Street Journal’s Wallet blog, is that if you close any line of credit, your credit score takes a hit.

TweetUS Airways going back to free soda
With the recession making the airline industry even more competitive, US Airways is reportedly reversing its decision to charge passengers for nonalcoholic drinks.
According to The Associated Press, the airline — which began charging $2 for soda, juice, coffee and bottled water in coach cabins on domestic flights Aug. 1 — will resume its free beverage service aboard its planes March 1.
First-class passengers and all passengers traveling on trans-Atlantic flights always received free drinks.
“With US Airways being the only large network carrier to charge for drinks, we are at a disadvantage,” Chief Executive Doug Parker said.
“More importantly, this difference in our service has become a focal point that detracts from all of the outstanding improvements in on-time performance and baggage handling that all of us have worked so hard to achieve over the past year.”

TweetLabels to be required for lead-tested items
Late last week, Feb. 20, the Consumer Product Safety Commission released Section 103 of the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008.
The update stated that the CPSIA requires that, effective Aug. 14, 2009, “the manufacturer of a children’s product must place permanent distinguishing marks on the product and its packaging that provides certain identifying information.”
The CPSC, reflecting its navigation of uncharted waters, also said it was requesting comments and information about the implementation of this program.
If you have information to impart, e-mail that info to trackinglabels@cpsc.gov. Comments may also be faxed to (310) 504-0127.

TweetHere’s the Deal: Sites offer discounts, codes
Since last weekend had two holidays — Valentine’s Day and Presidents Day — and this weekend has none, there aren’t as many huge sales to be found.
However, J.C. Penney is continuing its sale that began earlier this month on beauty products. There’s also a coupon for $10 to $15 off a salon purchase online and inside today’s Dayton Daily News.
That sale ends today, Feb. 22.
Also, some of the Presidents Day sales by auto dealers continue, such as General Motors and Honda, which run through the end of the month.
One-stop saving — Web style
I’ve written about couponing before — that is, using coupons, weekly store ads with Web sites to earn the most savings.
However, what I am hearing is that many readers either aren’t sure where to start or simply don’t have enough time to perform the steps they think are necessary to get to those savings.
It appears that some Web site creators are hearing of those challenges as well — and they’re responding.
In the last week, I’ve come across two sites that make finding discounts for your favorite stores extremely easy and efficient.
The first is called FreeShipping.org.
On that site, there is access to the current discounts and coupons available at more than 1,000 well-known stores, including Target, Macy’s and Old Navy.
You can search by store or category.
And that isn’t even the best part. The site also has a My Coupons tab in which you select your favorite stores from the list, and the site assembles all the sales and coupons available at those stores.
The site saves that information, allowing you to go back daily and check on the updated discounts.
Another helpful site focuses on providing the promotional codes necessary to get many online discounts.
That site is called CurrentCodes.com, and it has information on discounts from about 2,000 stores.
The site also allows you to search by store or category, and provides promotional codes for those stores.

TweetBest-rated vacuum doesn’t turn on a ball
Are you in the market for a vacuum? I was last year, and I did what most conscientious (and somewhat anal) consumers will do — I checked out Consumer Reports, which is still the ultimate guide for comparison shopping.
I assumed, before picking up the magazine, that the best vacuum surely would be the Dyson, since I am always impressed by the owner in his foreign accent on those commercials, describing “cyclone technology” and how perfectly you can turn the machine on a ball.
However, I was surprised when, according to Consumer Reports, the top-rated Dyson (the Dyson DC17 Absolute Animal) ranks a meager 13th, and earns just a “Fair” in the handling category — which is second from the worst.
The Dyson also is on the higher end of the pricing, again likely due to the owner and his accent, with this model listed (according to the March 2009 issue) at $550.
The best rated vacuum is the Hoover WindTunnel Anniversary Edition, listed at $230.
For the complete list of vacuums, pick up the magazine or visit the Consumer Reports site.

TweetDayton makes list of 10 most affordable cities
Finally, we made a list we can be proud of!
According to CNNMoney on Thursday, Feb. 19, Dayton ranks among the 10 most affordable U.S. cities. In fact, four of the 10 cities are in Ohio.
The most affordable city? Indianapolis.
The least? New York City.
CNN said crashing home prices have led to the most affordable housing market in at least five years, according to the National Association of Home Builders/Wells Fargo Housing Opportunity Index, which was released Thursday.
CNN’s list includes the most affordable cities, their affordability index and their median home price:
Indianapolis IN, 93.1%, $103,000
Warren MI, 89.6%, $125,000
Youngstown OH, 89.4%, $73,000
Detroit MI, 89.3%, $90,000
Grand Rapids MI, 88.6%, $102,000
Syracuse NY, 87.8%, $88,000
Dayton OH, 87.4%, $90,000

TweetGuess who had a terrific year … Rolls-Royce
With reports every day of plummeting sales figures and tightening belts — especially in the auto industry — it is encouraging and more than a little puzzling to hear that one of the priciest car companies had a great sales year.
According to CNNMoney today, Feb. 20, Rolls Royce had the best sales year in its entire history last year.
And, CNN notes, things could get even better next year, when a new Rolls-Royce goes on sale. (Yes, that was “Rolls-Royce” and “sale” in the same sentence.)
The new 200EX, revealed in photos today, concept offers a preview of a car Rolls-Royce plans to produce early next year.
At 213 inches, the 200EX is about 8 inches longer than the largest Mercedes-Benz car, the S-class sedan. But it’s almost a foot-foot-and-a-half shorter than the Phantom, currently Rolls-Royce’s only 4-door model.
The new Rolls is expected to cost somewhere in the upper part of the $200,000 price range —about six times the price of an average car.
But it’s practically a bargain compared to the Phantom’s $340,000 starting price. The Phantom sedan is, at least for now, the least expensive Rolls-Royce one can buy.
And it seems to be working for them.

TweetHow to stay happy during the recession
As a society, we are happier during good economic times than during bleaker periods. As a result of experiencing the deepest recession in decades, we are now a bunch of really unhappy campers, said Kimberly Palmer recently at usnews.com.
Research from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania reports happiness measures go up and down with business cycles. A Reuters/Zogby poll in December 2008 found that people’s moods declined compared with November, with Americans reporting heightened concerns about job security and the direction of the country.
“Really? No kidding,” Palmer said, adding, “one might reasonably wonder why we need pollsters and Ph.D.s to tell us something so bleeding obvious.”
The research, however, turns out to be more complicated than a simple correlation between money and happiness, she said. Result indicate our happiness may depend more on our relative wealth than our absolute wealth. That is, we care more about how we compare with others.
Researchers have also found, Palmer reported, that while richer countries are happier than poorer ones, they don’t necessarily get happier over time as they accumulate more wealth.
There are ways to get and stay happier, even during this economic downturn.
Here are five ways the article suggests you can boost your happiness right now:
Take care of yourself.
Become more charitable.
Spend more time and money on enjoyable activities.
Invest in relationships.
Focus on what you’re grateful for.

TweetNew book all about ‘bang for your buck’
Here is a book that I am going to be sure to buy. It is called “1,001 Things They Won’t Tell You: An Insider’s Guide to Getting the Most Bang for your Buck.”
Written by Jonathan Dahl and the editors of SmartMoney — the Wall Street Journal magazine — the book is all about having the inside info to get the most for your money, and these folks should know.
The book is based on the popular SmartMoney column, “Ten Things They Won’t Tell You.”
Some of the advice includes: (No. 2) Vaccinating your pet may do more harm than good; and one from lawyers, (No. 4) you could win your lawsuit and still wind up with nothing.
Workman Publishing said it will be released next month and retail for $16.95.

TweetProtect yourself from digital theft
I receive a monthly newsletter from Paychex, a payroll services company, that is full of interesting tips and suggestions on a variety of topics.
The February edition offered tips to protect you from digital pickpockets.
Criminals like easy money, it said, and it’s easy for crooks to get to you digitally whether they operate using fraud, identity theft, phishing or all of the above.
Remember:
Invest in good anti-virus software, anti-spyware and firewall software. Keep it up to date.
Never open email attachments unless you know the sender and what is in the attachment.
Spammers often spoof messages and email addresses so they look like they are legitimate.
Never respond to emails from your bank or financial institution asking you to “confirm information.” Most banks will NEVER request information in an unsolicited email.
Create strong passwords. The strongest passwords use at least eight characters, combining upper and lower case letters and numbers. And even though it’s more complicated, it’s best to use multiple passwords and change them often.
Use a credit card to shop online. If you are defrauded or merely unhappy with your purchase, you can contact the credit card company and they will fight the battle for you in many cases.
Do not use your debit card on line. If you do, the money is immediately gone and you will likely have no recourse. And, some companies will put a freeze on an amount greater than your purchase until the funds are actually disbursed.
Buy a cross-cut shredder. Turning your personal information into confetti is one of the best ways to keep anyone else from using it for less-than-honorable purposes.

TweetGreat discount stores having sales
One of our new Deals Team members, Cea Cohen Elliott, recently clued me in on a couple great discount stores — one in Beavercreek and one in West Chester.
The Beavercreek find is Gabriel Brothers, which is at 2500 N. Fairfield Road Suite A, and the West Chester gem is the Gaiam Outlet at 5455 West Chester Road.
And both are having great sales right now.
The Gaiam Outlet is in the midst of its Out of School Sale that started Thursday, Feb. 19 and goes through Saturday. The outlet starts out at having everything at least 50 percent off, and this sale will have items for 70 percent to 80 percent off.
Gaiam exercise gear is 70 percent off, all apparel is 70 percent off, towels are 50 percent off, all duvets are buy one get one free, shoes are 60 percent off, and much, much more.
Gabriel Brothers, which has a standing mantra of offering up to 70 percent off department store prices, is having an Ann Taylor Loft sale right now, with some items are 2 for $10; 2 for $19.
Cohen Elliott said that some of the other great deals right now are Urban Outfitters clothes for $6.99-$19.99; JCrew for $16.99-$19.99; lots of Express; Lerner; Ann Taylor Loft and Ann Taylor Loft Petites; Baby Phat; Anthropology; Sperry; Champion; and many more.

Tweet5 good ways to cut elder care costs
A story on SmartMoney.com looked into ways to cut costs when caring for a parent or grandparent.
The site said that, especially with retirement savings being decimated, all while health care and other costs skyrocket, it is a good time to see where corners can be cut.
SmartMoney noted that informal caregivers who take care of an elderly friend or relative spend $5,500 a year just on the day-to-day expenses like food and doctor visits, according to a 2007 study by the National Alliance for Caregiving and Evercare, a health-care coordination program.
It went on to say that the average annual cost of a semiprivate room in a nursing home is $69,715, while the average cost of an assisted living facility is $36,372 a year, according to a 2008 MetLife survey.
So here are some tips to help you better manage the costs of caring for an elderly loved one:
Negotiate: It never hurts to ask. Try negotiating on price with a facility, especially if they aren’t filled to capacity.
Offer to share a room: Some assisted-living facilities reportedly set aside a certain number of shared rooms for lower-income seniors who can’t afford the full fee.
Hire a geriatric-care manager: A geriatric-care manager can do everything from assessing your parent’s long-term care needs and finding them a place to live to helping you navigate the health-care system.
Adult day care: If you work during the day and your parent can’t be left home alone, enrolling them in an adult day care is a more affordable option than private, in-home care.
Fees for adult day services vary, but the national average rate is $64 a day, compared with an hourly rate of $20 (or $160 for an eight-hour day) for home health aides, according to a 2008 MetLife study.
Contact your state’s department of aging to get recommended adult day care centers, or search the National Adult Day Services Association for centers by state.
Hire a part-time caretaker: For seniors who don’t require close or full-time supervision, hiring someone to regularly check in and spend time with your elderly parent may be all you need.
The site advises checking with your local university, or faith-based organization (like Catholic Charities or Jewish Family Service), which have volunteers and planned activities for seniors, for more information.

TweetSite offers deals while making grocery list
Want to make your grocery list ahead of time and know how much you can save from in-store coupons? Then you might like MyGroceryDeals.com.
At MyGroceryDeals.com, you can plug in your favorite stores and search what items you want to buy and what sales they are offering that week. I liked some parts of the site, and others I thought could use a little improvement.
In my opinion, the best part of the site is being able to see what the deals are this week on some realistic purchases for my family. I liked the comparison angle, by seeing what the item cost when it is on sale at different stores, and seeing the list on the side of the screen.
I also liked being able to search by product, store or category, and that the site highlighted “featured items.”
It was also neat that you can find out the nutritional information of a prospective item and link to further coupon savings.
What I didn’t like about the site is when it adds things to the shopping list, it adds how the maximum number to buy in that offer. Like if Honey Nut Cheerios are on sale for 3 for $8, as they are this week at Meijer, they add three boxes of the cereal to your list.
I know I don’t have to buy all of those items, but it would be nice to see a more accurate tally.
I also didn’t like that it didn’t list an item if it wasn’t on sale. Like when I searched for Chips Ahoy! cookies, it only listed the cookies if they were on sale at the store.
I think it would be better if it listed the bottom line price of what you would pay, regardless of the special, to truly comparison shop.
Also, I was disappointed that my computer system “did not support the coupon printing technology” on the linked coupon sites.
I do think the site is definitely worth checking out, though. See what you like and don’t like and let me know.

TweetTravel site makes finding best deals easier
It is great to have so many sites that allow consumers to search for the cheapest tickets and myriad flights available —Travelocity, Orbitz, CheapTickets.com and so on — but sometimes it is difficult to know which site to choose.
And, it can be time-consuming and taxing to enter the same search criteria on multiple sites.
There is a centralized location, however, that allows you to search for a travel information using multiple outlets in one fell swoop.
It is called igougo.com, and it allows you to click on multiple sites you want to search, fill out the criteria of what you are looking for and search for your flights, hotels, rental cars and packages all at one place and time.
It is convenient, easy and yields the most comprehensive search — just like we like it.

Tweet1-800-Flowers recalls snack trays
More recalls today, Feb. 19, in the steady, downhill flow of salmonella-tainted peanut butter products associated with the Peanut Corp. of America.
Like I said Wednesday, though, the recalls do seem to be slowing — we can only hope the end of the recalls is on the horizon.
For the complete list of recalls, visit www.fda.gov.
The most noteworthy recall today is the snack trays put out by 1-800-Flowers.com, primarily because they seem the most universally available from this list.
Today’s recalls are:
Grandpa Dons: Grandpa’s Oven Santa Fe Snack Mix
Seattle Chocolate Company Inc: Choxie Brand - Dark Chocolate Nut Truffle Meltaways
1-800-Flowers.com Inc.: Four Snack Tray Products Containing Peanuts
Aspen Hills Inc.: (Expanded) Frozen Cookie Dough Products Containing Peanuts
C&K Market Inc., Parent Company of Ray’s Food Place, Shop Smart, And Price Less Foods: Bulk Peanuts, Whole Honey Peanuts, and Trail Mix
Theo Chocolate: “Peanut Butter Big Daddy” and Peanut Confections

TweetAre you addicted to debt? Take this quiz
The Consumerist, the Web site which will now be known for helping chase down Facebook and make it eat its rules changes, has a list of questions to help you find out if you are addicted to debt.
Here is the quiz:
Are your debts making your home life unhappy?
Does the pressure of your debts distract you from your daily work?
Are your debts affecting your reputation?
Do your debts cause you to think less of yourself?
Have you ever given false information in order to obtain credit?
Have you ever made unrealistic promises to your creditors?
Does the pressure of your debts make you careless of the welfare of your family?
Do you ever fear that your employer, family or friends will learn the extent of your total indebtedness?
When faced with a difficult financial situation, does the prospect of borrowing give you an inordinate feeling of relief?
Does the pressure of your debts cause you to have difficulty sleeping?
Has the pressure of your debts ever caused you to consider getting drunk?
Have you ever borrowed money without giving adequate consideration to the rate of interest you are required to pay?
Do you usually expect a negative response when you are subject to a credit investigation?
Have you ever developed a strict regimen for paying off your debts, only to break it under pressure?
Do you justify your debts by telling yourself that you are superior to the “other” people, and when you get your “break” you’ll be out of debt overnight?
The Consumerist writes that, according to Debtor’s Anonymous, if you answer yes to eight or more of these questions, “the chances are that you have a problem with compulsive debt, or are well on your way to having one.”
If you find yourself in that camp, today might be a good day to make some changes.

TweetWatch out for jury duty phone scam
If you get a call saying it is from your local courthouse saying you have missed jury duty and that there is a warrant for your arrest, don’t be so quick to believe it.
It is likely part of a scam to get you to give up your Social Security number and date of birth so the callers can use that information to do dark deeds, like steal your identity.
It also serves as good a reminder to NEVER give out your Social Security number or other data sensitive material over the phone.
This scam, as alerted to us on WalletPop.com, has been reported lately across America in at least 11 states, and has been going on for at least a couple of years now.
The FBI even put up a page about almost three years ago about the scam.
However, as WalletPop notes, if you get a phone call like that and actually did skip out on jury duty, it’s probably best to just wait at your house, let them pick you up and go quietly.

TweetEvenflo recalls children’s activity centers
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and Evenflo announced Tuesday, Feb 17, that consumers should stop using Evenflo ExerSaucer Triple Fun stationary activity centers unless otherwise directed.
The activity table has a cap on one end that can loosen and fall off, posing a fall hazard to a young child. It is in the Stage 3 position, that involves converting the product into an activity table, in which the problem occurs.
Evenflo has received 11 reports of dislodged end caps which resulted in nine minor injuries, including bumps and bruises. Evenflo has also received a report of a dislodged end cap that resulted in a child suffering a broken collarbone in Canada.
The centers were sold at Toys R Us and Burlington Baby Depot from October 2006 through February 2009 for about $120.
The recall involves the centers made between October 2006 and December 2008. The model number is 6231711. No other ExerSaucer models use end caps and, therefore, no other models are included in this recall.
The CPSC recommends that consumers immediately stop using the activity table in Stage 3 and contact Evenflo to receive a free replacement end cap.
The product may continue to be used in Stages 1 and 2 without changes.
For more information, contact Evenflo at (800) 233-5921 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. weekdays or visit www.exersaucertriplefun.com.

TweetEarned Income Tax Credit: Don’t miss out
With the economy in the tank, more people than ever may be eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit on their 2008 federal income tax returns.
The credit can yield a refund of up to $4,800 for qualified taxpayers, so it’s most definitely worth your time to see if you qualify.
According to the Internal Revenue Service’s Web site, irs.gov, the present state of the economy has brought with it financial changes for many taxpayers, which may make many Ohioans eligible who have never qualified for the EITC in past years.
Last year, more than 1 million taxpayers in Ohio and West Virginia received the EITC, qualifying for more than $1.9 billion.
The IRS provides plenty of information on-line, including the EITC Assistant, a step-by-step program designed to help you determine if you are eligible.
You’ll need your W-2s and about 20 minutes to complete the questions, available at irs.gov/individuals/article/0,,id=130102,00.html.
In addition, you, your spouse (if you file a joint return) and any qualifying children will all need valid social security numbers.
Other available information includes a list of frequently asked questions, forms and booklets. Go to irs.gov and search “EITC” for a complete listing.
Also look at www.eitc.irs.gov/central/main, a separate IRS Web site dedicated to EITC that offers podcasts and information for tax preparers.
As with any tax issues, if you have questions or concerns, you should seek professional help from a reliable tax preparer.
And that would not be me.

TweetHere’s the Deal: Presidents Day sales
Now that Valentine’s Day is but a romantic hangover, it’s time to gear up for Presidents Day — a day when we honor our forefathers and celebrate our freedom by doing a little sale shopping.
These annual sales are on top of the discounts already being offered at many area stores and online. They honor not only our dear departed presidents, but our pocketbooks as well.
Macy’s appears to be the headliner this weekend, having a clearance of up to 80 percent off items for the entire family.
In addition to what the store is calling its biggest Levi’s Jeans sale of the season, the store also is selling designer coats for 60 percent to 70 percent off, and has shoes and boots, furs, jewelry and more on sale.
There also is a furniture sale going on at Macy’s, as it is in the midst of its semiannual home sale.
The store is offering no interest for 24 months and no down payment if you use your Macy’s charge card, meet minimum purchase requirements and have good credit. Mattress sets are 40 percent to 50 percent off.
If you prefer shopping online, Macy’s has the same deals plus free shipping if you spend $99 or more. The flier in today’s paper will get you an extra 15 percent off, and the coupon can be downloaded from the Web site at www.macys.com as well.
Kohl’s is offering additional savings of 15 percent to 30 percent if you use your Kohl’s charge card through Tuesday, Feb. 17.
The store is introducing the designer Dana Buchman, and offering 30 percent off her collection for women.
Kohl’s has an additional 60 percent to 80 percent off their clearance section online, and free standard shipping if you spend $75 or more.
Kohl’s also has a deal where you save $5 in store and 10 percent online through e-mail alerts. For more information, visit www.kohls.com.
Toys R Us is having a Presidents Day sale that started Friday and ends Monday. There are savings of up to 70 percent off, when you take 20 percent off their clearance items.
See the flier in today’s paper for more details or print off coupons at their Web site at www.toysrus.com.
Even car sales are getting into the act. GM is hosting a Presidents Day sale that enables shoppers to save thousands of dollars on a new American car.
The sale runs through March 2.
Online exclusives include a Dockers sale of 50 percent off the already discounted items. It includes items such as a women’s woven-French cuff shirt, originally $44, now $7.48. The sale ends Monday. Visit www.us.dockers.com for more information.
Sears is selling select tools for 50 percent off, both online and in the stores, and Bath and Body Works, La-Z-Boy, Morris Home Furnishings and Ashley Furniture Gallery are among those having big, patriotic discounts.
And this is just a sampling. As on every Sunday, there are a plethora of ads in your newspaper today to help you locate some other area sales.
Happy Presidents Day shopping!

TweetSite serves up coupons for favorite stores
Do you like the idea of couponing, but don’t know where to start? Do you think it will take too much time to find the coupons you really want?
It seems that some companies are hearing that familiar cry, and are making it easier to navigate sites to find the coupons you want.
One such site is at Freeshipping.org. On that site it has a tab called My Coupons that is free and gives you the option of picking from more than 1,000 stores you might want coupons from.
It is fast, easy, and has the option of sending you e-mails with updates, or not — which I really like.
I just signed in there, giving no more information than my e-mail address and a “nickname.”
I chose 14 stores I visit often and already got a 60 percent plus an extra 10 percent off coupon when you spend $100 or more at Babies R Us, was alerted to a clearance sale at Books A Million in which you can save 80 percent, saw a Presidents Day sale at the ESPN Shop, and another coupon for 40 percent off boots at Sketchers.
You can also share your coupon list with others either via e-mail or linking to your page.
As WalletPop notes:
If My Coupons can continue to provide the same high value, up-to-date coupon codes it has right now, it could change the online coupon landscape.

TweetAre you enchanted? Get lilac roses
Since there is much talk of flowers and roses floating around on this Valentine’s Day eve — at least on this blog — I thought I would pass on what the various rose colors mean. I knew some of them, but some of them — especially the combos — surprised me.
About.com did a whole list of what the colors traditionally mean, and here’s what they had to say:
Red Roses: Red roses proclaim “I love you.” They are the ultimate symbol of romantic love and enduring passion.
Yellow Roses: Yellow roses indicate friendship and freedom. Yellow roses are also appropriate for sending congratulations to newlyweds, graduates, Texans, and new mothers.
Pale Pink Roses: Pale pink roses connote grace, gentleness, and gratitude.
Light Pink Roses: A joy to behold, light pink roses express fun and happiness.
Deep Pink Roses: Deep pink roses say “Thank you.”
Lilac Roses: Lilac roses indicate the sender has fallen in love at first sight with the recipient and is enchanted.
White Roses: Pure white roses symbolize truth and innocence. They also send other messages: “I miss you” and “You’re heavenly.”
Coral Roses: Coral roses express one thing with their passionate color: Desire.
Peach Roses: Peach roses speak of appreciation, gratitude, and also sympathy.
Orange Roses: Orange roses communicate enthusiasm and desire on the part of the sender.
Dead Roses: Regardless of the original color, dead roses say “It’s over” loud and clear.
COMBINED ROSES
Put two or more colors of roses together, and a new rose meaning arises:
White Roses + Yellow Roses: A symbol of harmony.
Red Roses + Yellow Roses: A message of happiness and celebration.
Red Roses + White Roses: An indication of bonding and harmony.
Two Roses Entwined: An engagement or marriage is imminent.

TweetHelp your kid build a jewelry box
Let’s see … who do you know who loves your kid and loves jewelry? Or, do you and your kid both love jewelry and need some cool handmade boxes to house your baubles?
If you or anyone you know fits that description, you might want to take part in a fun, free clinic being put on by Lowe’s Home Improvement store from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 14.
When I plugged in my Kettering ZIP code, the site offered the event at the Dayton Mall, Beavercreek, Huber Heights, Trotwood, Xenia and Middletown locations.
The clinic is designed for parents and kids to make a jewelry box together.
To attend, register online in three easy steps for the Lowe’s Build and Grow Clinics.
If the idea appeals to you, but not the jewelry box so much, Lowe’s is offering a race car kit building event from 10 to 11 a.m. Feb. 28 as well.
The Home Depot also offers kids’ workshops for ages 5 to 12. They are the first Saturday of each month from 9 a.m. to noon.
The March 7 one will allow kids to build either a wooden trinket box or a raceway. And, as noted on WalletPop, each child also receives a kid-sized orange apron and an achievement pin.

TweetWhere should you get a dozen red roses?
I have noted many good deals on flowers online for Valentine’s Day today, but there are also good deals around town. And if you shop locally, you can see the flowers and pick them up at your leisure.
To get an idea of who had a dozen red roses for the best price around town, I called a few florists and grocery stores to see which had the best deals.
It wasn’t a surprise that the grocery stores largely have the better deals, but they don’t always have the best presentation. It all depends what you’re looking for.
Colonial Flowers and Gifts on Siebenthaler in Dayton was the florist with the cheapest prices, offering cash and carry (wrapped, no vase) for $19.99.
Here is what I found in the Dayton area for a dozen red roses:
Jacques Garden of Flowers in Kettering: Premium Package, which includes vase, baby’s breath and arrangement is $79.95; cash and carry (which is flowers chosen by you and bundled, without a vase) is $29.95
Hills & Dales Florist in Dayton: $60 plus delivery
Furst Florist in Dayton: $59.95, which includes vase and filler
Colonial Flowers and Gifts in Dayton: Has cash and carry dozen for $19.99
Kroger: $49.99 with vase, $19.99 cash and carry
Dot’s Market: $19.99 cash and carry
Meijer: $29.99 for larger roses without a vase, $19.99 for smaller roses in a vase
Linden Avenue Florist in Dayton: $73 in vase, or a dozen pink wrapped roses for $30
Oakwood Florist: $76 plus tax and delivery for long-stemmed, $50 plus tax and delivery for short-stemmed
Do you know of any other prices on a dozen red roses around town worth noting?

They’re not allowed to advertise the brand name, but this could be quite a find.

TweetCondoms selling well in poor economy
Thinking of adding another mouth to feed? Neither is your neighbor.
Nielsen, which keeps tabs on retail just like they do on television, reported Thursday, Feb. 12, that sales of condoms were up 5 percent in the fourth quarter of 2008 compared to the same period in 2007.
January saw an increase of 6 percent, and according to WalletPop.com, with that increase, condoms join cheap vodka as one of the few products that’s seeing an upswing as consumers cut back.
Jim Daniels, vice president of marketing for Trojan, told USA Today that “If people don’t have the money to go out to a fancy dinner or are looking to cut back, Trojan gives them some real affordable ways to stay in and make some great memories together.”
… without getting pregnant.
WalletPop also notes that recessions tend to increase marital stress and divorce rates. If extramarital sex or sex with a new partner is on the rise, that would also explain the increase in demand for condoms.

TweetBrown pushes for more authority for the federal government in recalls
U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, announced legislation Thursday, Feb. 12, that would give the federal government new authority to recall tainted foods and establish a federal program that would quickly and accurately trace the source of tainted food.
Brown — who is also a member of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee — is making these moves in reaction to the many peanut butter recalls associated with the salmonella outbreak at the Peanut Corp. of America.
“Too many Ohioans are struggling to put food on their tables. They shouldn’t also have to worry about the safety of that food,” said Brown.
Brown’s legislation combines provisions from two food safety bills he authored in previous sessions of Congress. These include the Food Tracking Improvement Act and The Safe and Fair Enforcement and Recall for (SAFER) Meat, Poultry, and Food Act.
This outbreak has sickened 600 people, and caused the recall of more than 1,900 products. Ohio has reported 92 cases linked to the outbreak and two deaths.
The complete list of recalls can be found at www.fda.gov. Here are the latest recalls:
In-Room Plus and In-Room West: Select Honey Roasted Peanuts and Hot Cajun Mix
American Almond Products Co.: Selected Lots of Roasted Granulated Peanuts, Peanut Brittle Crunch, Chunky Peanut Butter, Fresh Direct Brand Honey Roasted Peanut Butter and Fresh Direct Brand Chunky Peanut Butter
Mooresville Ice Cream Co.: Carolinas Recall of Half Gallon and Three Gallon Containers of ‘Chocolate Peanut Butter Delight’ Flavor of DeLuxe Ice Cream
Golden Temple of Oregon: WHA GURU CHEW Peanut Cashew Bars
Something Better Natural Foods: Products With Peanuts
Germack Pistachio Co.: Sugar-Free Milk Chocolate Peanuts
Deluxe Ice Cream Co.: All Labels Of Tin Roof Sundae, Goo Goo Cluster, Candy Bar Half Gallon Packaged Ice Cream Product
Best Maid Cookie Co.: Expired Peanut-containing Cookie Products from 2007
American Nutrition: Announces a Voluntary Recall of Baked Dog Treats
Western Trade Group: Roasted Peanuts

TweetValentine’s Day deals at 1-800-FLOWERS.com
Flowers are the centerpiece of this lovely holiday, and there are deals to be found.
One such sale is available at 1-800-FLOWERS.com, and there are bouquets of many sizes and shapes available for an average of $10 off their usual prices. And many of them are available even if you order that day.
One bouquet on big sale is the Capture My Heart by Jane Packer (pictured) arrangement, that is 50 percent off. However, the original $75 seems a little steep to me to begin with. But at least it is only $37.49 now.

TweetTax tips from the IRS
We’ve all been trying to ignore it, but that is no longer possible.
The W-2s have been delivered (or at least they should have been). The forms have begun arriving in the mail.
There is no way around it —it’s officially tax season.
And although it may be hard to believe, the Internal Revenue Service is not really out to get us. In fact, it regularly offers tips and assistance to make sure all of us are able to complete our tax returns properly.
As I receive useful information, I’ll share it, either in my column or on my blog at springfieldnewssun.com/blogs.
Here are the most recent tips from the IRS to help you get things done right:
How to get tax forms
Forms and publications can be accessed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, at irs.gov. Hard copies can be requested by calling toll free at (800) TAX-FORM (829-3676) and should be received within 10 days. Forms are available also at most public libraries.
Use Free File
Free File is a free federal tax preparation and electronic filing program for most taxpayers. The program offers two options. The full service is for individuals with an adjusted gross income of $56,000 or less in 2008.
New this year is Free File Fillable Forms, which allow taxpayers to enter tax data, perform basic math calculations, sign electronically, print returns and file electronically. Free File is only available through irs.gov.
Use electronic direct deposit
If you chose to have your refund electronically deposited into your bank account, you’ll have your money much faster. The IRS claims electronic deposits are also safer than paper checks sent through the regular mail, reducing the risk of stolen refunds.
And don’t be skeptical of this option — I’ve used it for a few years, and it works like a charm. I’ve had my refund in about a week with no problems.

TweetThoughtful ways to show you care without breaking budget
Ahhh, Valentine’s Day.
For many, it is perhaps the most dreaded holiday on the calendar.
It strikes fear into the hearts of third-graders and grown men alike and when forgotten or inappropriately gifted, can send women into weeks-long furors.
The whole thing apparently got its start when St. Valentine, a third century Roman priest who served under Emperor Claudius II, was condemned to death for ignoring an Imperial decree. Valentine ended up in prison because he refused to stop performing marriages.
It is reported he fell in love with the jailer’s daughter, to whom he sent his final letter, signed “From your Valentine.”
So if we take a cue from St. Valentine, this Saturday, Feb. 14, can be an opportunity to turn what has become a commercial holiday into something truly meaningful.
Here are some simple, thoughtful ways to show you care without breaking your budget:
Write personalized notes on red card stock and slip them into lunch boxes, briefcases, gym bags — wherever your loved ones will find them.
Put your heart-shaped cookie cutters to good use for cookies or to cut special sandwiches for your children’s lunches. They make great pancake molds, too.
Fill up an inexpensive digital photo keychain with favorite photos from vacations, birthdays or other special events.
Wrap up a special framed photo or piece of children’s artwork.
Give a single rose with a heartfelt note.
Give special “coupons” for hugs, dinners, baby-sitting, household chores, or anything else your recipient enjoys or needs. There are many on-line resources available; try a general search for “printable gift coupons.”
Enlist your kids and play Secret Cupid.
To do this, fill a small bag with treats and attach a note that says something like: “Cupid stopped by to let you know someone is thinking about you. Now it’s your turn to help Cupid by secretly letting two people know how special they are.”
Choose at least two friends and sneakily deliver the goodies to their front doors (or other obvious location). This can also become a rare opportunity to condone your children’s behavior as they ding-dong-ditch!
Regardless of your economic situation, I offer for consideration my mother’s economic philosophy on love.
She was wise to teach her children and grandchildren that love is most often not held to a law of diminishing returns.
“The more love you give, the more you get back,” she says. I can’t think of a better present.

TweetPeanut butter sales down; Trader Joe’s expands items on its recall list
With new peanut butter recalls every day linked to the salmonella outbreak at the Peanut Corp. of America, it is understandable that many people have begun to fear any product that contains peanut butter.
And it is affecting peanut butter sales across the country. As reported by the New York Times on Friday, Feb. 6, many consumers are swearing off all brands of peanut butter, driving down sales by nearly 25 percent.
However, it is good to remember that the PCA only accounts for a small percentage of the total $800 million in annual sales by the peanut butter companies in the United States.
If you have an item you want to check, visit the American Peanut Council to see items that are safe. You can also go directly to that company’s Web site to verify if their products are safe.

TweetExpect higher prices for produce this year
It isn’t just the recession that is causing some prices to soar, it is also Mother Nature.
Even though there is some rain in the forecast this week in California, weather experts say it likely won’t be but a drop in the bucket toward fending off the the worst drought in 20 years.
And, as WalletPop noted Sunday, Feb. 8, that’s not just bad for Californians, that’s bad news for the rest of us, too.
The site notes that California farmers, who grow the majority of America’s fruits and vegetables, are leaving thousands of acres bare for fear they won’t be able to water their crops later.
This means we will be paying more for produce this year, starting this spring.
Some hard-hit crops include lettuce (California acres devoted to those greens dropped by 50 percent) and melons (the state supplies all of the nation’s canteloupes during the summer).
Reportedly farmers are switching from water-intensive crops, such as rice, to ones that can rely on drip irrigation, like almonds.

TweetPeanut butter confusion, more recalls acknowledged
New today in The Endless Peanut Butter Recall of 2009 (as it will someday be known), the source of the outbreak also expanded its own recall of items.
The Peanut Corp. of America said this weekend that the company “wishes to highlight important information regarding several of its products” since it has not manufactured any products in cans and jars since 2007.
“However, because the Jan. 28 recall notice indicated that PCA does not sell products directly to consumers in stores, and because the expanded recall includes PCA products made since the beginning of 2007, the potential for confusion may exist.”
Yep.
So the company advises consumers to be aware that the following PCA brands were sold to consumers at retail at its Casey’s, Parnell’s Pride, Reggie, and Robinson Crusoe labels to 99 Cent Stuff, 99 Cents Only Stores, Dollar General, and Dollar Tree Stores.
Those PCA items include: Casey’s Dry Roasted Peanuts, Casey’s Honey Roasted Peanuts, Parnell’s Pride Dry Roasted Salted Peanuts, Parnell’s Pride Dry Roasted Unsalted Peanuts, Parnell’s Pride Honey Roasted Peanuts, Parnell’s Pride Honey Roasted Peanuts, Parnell’s Pride Mixed Nuts with Peanuts, Parnell’s Pride Oil Roasted Unsalted Peanuts, Parnell’s Pride Party Peanuts, Parnell’s Pride Roasted Salted Redskin Peanuts, Parnell’s Pride Unsalted Peanuts, Reggie’s Ballpark Style Peanuts Original Salted and Robinson Crusoe Salted Home-Style Virginia Peanuts.

TweetHere’s the Deal: Thrift store shoppers offer tips on good stores, strategies
The inherent value of shopping thrift stores is nothing new. People have been finding discounts on gently used merchandise at these outlets for years, and benefitting local charities in the process.
What is new is the increased demand for these stores. And, with penny pinching at a premium, we thought we would get some advice as to where the best deals could be found.
Theresa Pelaez, 52, said she has been shopping at her favorite thrift store, Village Discount Outlet, 3880 Linden Ave., since her kids were little.
The Vandalia resident said she was able to get them any kind of clothes they wanted without going to the mall.
“And now I’ve gotten them hooked,” she said.
Pelaez said she likes the store because they put out new things continually.
“Goodwill and The Salvation Army don’t put out as much, and I have found them to be a little pricier,” she said. “You don’t find as good of bargains there.”
However, Pelaez said that the best furniture can be found at The Salvation Army on Main Street in Dayton, or at the Goodwill stores by the Dayton Mall or in Beavercreek.
At those Goodwills, she said, you also can get items from Target with the tags still on. Village, which sells items for Amvets, has weekday specials that include color-coded items that are just 50 cents on Mondays, senior discounts of 20 percent off on Tuesdays and more throughout the week.
Pelaez recommends hitting several stores, and frequent one store regularly.
Kathy Oaster of Kettering, a loyal shopper at Valley Thrift Store at 1717 Woodman Drive, Kettering, agreed.
Oaster, a 41-year-old stay-at-home mom, said she visits Valley just about every day. “I don’t spend long — maybe 10 to 15 minutes. I just give it a quick run through to see what I might like or need,” she said.
Oaster said that Village probably is best for clothes, but Valley is better for toys and electronics. Valley sells items from Vietnam Veterans of America.
“Monday, I got a (Fisher Price) Smart Cycle for my kids here for $20 — it is regularly $100!”
Oaster said the toy just needed a cartridge, which she got online for $2.50.
Valley Manager Judy Negrete said their big sale day is Monday and all merchandise is 25 percent off.
Oaster said even her kids are learning about the value of thrift stores.
“If they get Christmas money, they want to come here (to Valley),” Oaster said. “Because they know they can get more for their money.”

Tweet10 tips for lowering your cable bill
The Consumerist reported this week that one of their readers — Adam from Free Press — sent in his 10 tips for lowering his cable bill.
They said that, using these strategies, Adam reduced his monthly bill from $190 to $90, while adding three movie networks, a sports package and two additional boxes.
Here are Adam’s tips:
1. Go to the Source. When going through the prompts, never call anywhere but the discontinue/reduce services department. Typically this will take you to the customer care department, the people who have the ability to actual do something besides offer you a triple play bundle you probably don’t want. Until changes are made to the current system of retention marketing, this path is your best bet.
2. Make Your Case. After giving them your account number, frame the discussion by mentioning how long you’ve been with them and the amount you’ve been paying. I mention all the interest I’m receiving from competitors and that I’m sick of seeing my rates go up. Remember you’re calling to provide them with an opportunity to continue getting money from you each month.
3. Focus on Price. Don’t call and say you want free HBO. Instead call to ask what can be done to lower your bill. The first thing they will probably do is throw in free HBO. Remind them that you had called to lower your bill, but that you appreciate the concession. If you used to pay significantly less bring it up and mention a particular figure.
4. Get Specific. Make sure to have your bill in front of you and mention specific services. The rep is taught to mention any deal you’re already receiving. Your job is to mention all the services you’re paying full price for. Don’t be afraid to go line by line. You’ll be amazed that all of sudden a deal that simply didn’t exist two minutes ago has magically appeared.
5. Express Your Displeasure. It probably doesn’t help to kick and scream, but be stern. Ultimately, it is up to the rep whether you receive discounts so be upset with the service, not them. I’ve also found they are in better moods in the morning, so call early.
6. You Are Human. Don’t be afraid to remind them of this. Try to get the rep to relate to your problem. Discussing some personal experience that provides another perspective on the frame you’ve built will help. Mention that your roommates or spouse doesn’t know all the specifics; they just think that you’re paying too much.
7. Lock Em In. If you get a deal make sure you know the duration and see about making it longer. It is best to keep track of this because if you let your deals expire, your bill skyrockets. Nonetheless, some of my most effective calls have come after a big increase. You gain much more traction with a bill increase or service outage than just a random, “fed-up,” call.
8. Find a Friend. This could be the most important tip. When you find a responsive rep, stay with them. You’ll know when you get a good rep because when they put you on hold the next thing you hear is the list of deductions to your bill. They recognize that the script and tactics they are given don’t always work and sometimes the extra mile is needed. Get their name and extension and ask for them next time your bill increases. It saves you time and energy and you won’t need to lay all the groundwork again. They know why you’re calling.
9. Persistence Is Key. I still come away empty-handed sometimes, but mostly it is because I’ve been connected to a poor rep. Call back later and hopefully you’ll get someone who recognizes the type of customer their dealing with.
10. It’s Worth the Effort. I have saved my roommates and I more than $2,000 since I moved in two years ago. Not because I have any particular talent but simply because I force the issue.

TweetDairy Queen now offering value menu combos
Dairy Queen — one of my favorite secret indulgences — is now asking customers “What’s your deal?”
The company is now giving its customers what it calls “a deal that’s tough to refuse given the troubling economy, the mortgage crisis and the credit crunch.”
All DQ Grill & Chill and Dairy Queen/Brazier locations are adding a new permanent value menu that offers choices and is easy on the wallet.
The program is a mix-and-match featuring nine menu items. Two items cost $3, or it’s three for $4 or four for $5.
The company said there are more than 20,000 combinations to choose from. Sweet Deals menu choices include sandwiches, sides, a medium beverage and a small soft serve sundae or cone. All menu items will remain regular size.
Dairy Queen tested the program for two years and has officially rolled it out nationwide.

The National Retail Federation says the economy is going to take its toll on Valentine’s Day this year.
In their 2009 Valentine’s Day Consumer Intentions and Actions survey, conducted by BIGresearch, the NRF reports that consumers plan to spend an average $102.50 on Valentine’s gifts and merchandise, down from last year’s $122.98 per person.
Total Valentine’s Day spending is expected to reach $14.7 billion.
And what do they think folks will they spend it on?

16.0 percent will buy jewelry, compared to 16.6 percent in 2008.
More will send greeting cards (58.0% vs. 56.8% in 2008).

TweetLatest recalls, news on peanut butter
Today’s peanut butter casualties include lots of ice cream and Omaha Steaks’ Bridge Mix among many others.
This recall of peanut butter due to salmonella contamination at the Peanut Corp. of America has sickened at least 575 and been linked to eight deaths.
Thousands of peanut products have been pulled off store shelves since mid-January, and it is on its way to becoming the biggest food recall in the nation’s history.
The recall has raised questions about the food industry as a whole, citing poor oversight and even caused the president to call for a review of the Food and Drug Administration.
It has forced companies, such as Kellogg, to rethink how they make their food.
Kellogg Austin and Keebler peanut butter crackers were among the first products to be linked to the outbreak. The recall will reportedly cost the company $70 million.
Today’s list of recalls include:
House of Flavors: Expands Recall of Ice Cream
Annie B’s Confections: Peanut Containing Desserts
Shamrock Foods Co.: Nutty Sundae Cones
Cherrydale Manufacturing: Target Archer Farm and Target Market Pantry Products That Contain Peanuts
Nutsco: Peanut Products
Summerdale Peanut Co.: 10 oz. Bags of Baldwin County Fried Peanuts
Giambri’s Quality Sweets: Peanut Butter Easter Eggs
Odwalla: Expired Peanut-containing Bars from 2007
Midwest Ice Cream: 56 oz. Squares and Half Gallons of Meijer’s Candy Bar Swirl Ice Cream
Savoy Extraordinary Snacks: Certain Peanut Containing Products
Marlow Candy and Nut Co.: Salted Peanuts, Honey Roasted Peanuts and Hot and Spicy Peanuts
High’s: Tin Roof Sundae Ice Cream
Promedis: Nutrition Bars
Bucks Ice Cream: Ice Cream Nut Roll
Omaha Steaks: Bridge Mix with Chocolate Covered Peanuts
Kariba Farms: NutCrusters Thai Peanut

TweetDepartment of Commerce warns about investment fraud
The Ohio Department of Commerce regularly issues warning to Ohioans to watch out for investment fraud.
“These are difficult economic times and Ohioans need to be alert to the warning signs of get-rich-quick schemes and investment fraud,” said Ohio Securities Commissioner Andrea Seidt.
The Division of Securities suggests investors always be skeptical of promises of high returns with little risk, remain in charge of their money, keep careful records of conversations and actions about your money and review all statements.
So far this month, the division warns to watch out for the following:
Schemes targeting seniors. Many scam artists prey on seniors, who have had a lifetime to work and save money. Investment pitches can be made in person, over the phone, through the mail, or on the Internet. If you receive an unsolicited offer, end the discussion immediately, shred the mailing or delete the e-mail. In case you decide to consider an investment, seek the independent opinion of someone you trust.
Promissory notes secured by real estate. Promissory notes are short-term debt instruments that often promise high returns from little known companies. A relatively new variation includes notes that are advertised as “super safe investments” backed by a lien on a mortgage, which might not exist.
Unregistered sale of securities. Ohio law requires that investment products to be sold in Ohio must be properly registered with the Division, or be exempt from registration. Before investing, check with the Division to see if the investment is registered.
Affinity fraud. Investment promoters often use something they have in common with a potential investor, such as attending the same place of worship, being of the same race or ethnic group, or sharing common friends or hobbies. No matter who is promoting the investment, investors need to investigate before they invest.
Non-disclosure of risk. When an investment is offered for sale, the salesperson is required to disclose all material facts that a reasonable investor would rely on when deciding to invest. A common misrepresentation is to mislead the investor to believe it is a low risk or “guaranteed” investment when it is actually high risk.
Always investigate before you invest! Before investing, call the Division’s Investor Protection Hotline at 1-800-788-1194.
Ask: Is the brokerage firm and salesperson licensed to sell securities in Ohio? Have any enforcement actions been taken against them? Has the security been properly registered with the Division of Securities?

TweetWays to make a few extra dollars
Let’s face it — most of us could use a little extra cash. In my case, winning the lottery isn’t a very realistic option, so I am always intrigued by ideas others have found successful
Here are a few I found at www.usnews.com/articles/business/your-money/2009/02/03/7-ways-to-make-extra-money.html?PageNr=2
Launch a brand.
Kimberly Seals-Allers, formerly a senior editor at Essence magazine, started working on her Mocha Manual concept before leaving her full-time magazine job. The brand, which started with The Mocha Manual to a Fabulous Pregnancy, has turned into a series as well as an online magazine, maternity line, and consultancy. Seals-Allers also licensed use of the Mocha Manual name to create an instructional DVD that’s sold at Walmart and supermarkets.
Start a blog.
Barbara Saylor, 37, started her blog, Capitol B, after working in communications to give herself another outlet for writing. The key, Saylor says, is to find a niche.
Create a website.
Building up content and an audience are the two keys to making money from a website, says Paul McFedries, author of “The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Creating a Website.” The three ways he suggests to make money are running advertisements through a program such as Google AdSense, running ads through affiliate programs such as Amazon.com and selling products related to the website. By using third-party sites including Amazon Marketplace or Etsy.com, he said, you don’t even have to run the e-commerce side of things yourself.
Write for another website.
Maria O’Brien, 27, earns about $1,500 a month by writing articles for eHow.com, a site that posts contributions and then shares revenues from online ads with the writers. O’Brien, who writes about personal finance, nutrition, and careers, says, “If you can string together coherent sentences, you can write for eHow.” Building up enough traffic to earn as much as O’Brien can take time; some newcomers earn just a few dollars a month when they start out.
Design t-shirts.
Companies such as CafePress.com allow people to design and sell their T-shirts for a cut of the profits. According to the company’s website, some users earn over $100,000 a year, but that isn’t typical.
Make films.
Glenn Pieper, 45, teamed up with DemandStudios.com (owned by Demand Media, along with eHow.com), to produce Spanish language videos. He earns $3,000 to $4,000 a month working around 40 hours a week. He says he didn’t have a film background, but learned by practicing.
Sell other people’s products.
Make-up companies such as Avon and Mary Kay are always looking for new sales representatives, as are other companies such as kitchen products seller Pampered Chef. Marcia Brixey, author of “The Money Therapist,” said this can be great if it doesn’t require a big investment on the front end. She warns people to stay away from businesses that require sellers to make significant up-front purchases they might not be able to sell.

TweetBreyers, Harry and David, Trauth join peanut butter recalls
The one good part about this peanut butter recall, due to a salmonella outbreak at the Peanut Corp. of America, is it seems to be motivating federal agencies to at the very least examine the way our food industry works and where it needs to be improved.
As Agriculture Committee Chairman Sen. Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, told The Associated Press in a report this morning, Feb. 5: “To say that food safety in this country is a patchwork system is giving it too much credit. It is a hit or miss gamble, and that is truly frightening. It’s time to find the gaps in the system and remedy them.”
If that comes about, maybe some good can come of this situation.
In the meantime, the recalls keep coming.
In addition to the meals FEMA suspects may have contaminated peanut butter, there are a plethora of new items on the recall list this morning.
And remember, these are just the new ones. The complete list can be found at www.fda.gov. A list of approved products is at www.peanutsusa.com.
The new ones are:

TweetAvoid these money traps at grocery store
Karen Schuppert, on her food blog Cook 4 Seasons and reported on WalletPop, offers the following tips to help you avoid getting milked for cash the next time you run out for a gallon of the white stuff.
These are some of the biggest money traps at the grocery store:
1. Salad kits: Washed lettuce can cost three times as much as buying the same amount as a head of lettuce. They save time but not cash.
2. Individual servings of anything: The cost per unit of 100-calorie packs or other small servings is much more than buying one bag of something and parceling it out yourself into single servings. Again, more work but big savings.
3. Trail mix: Cost about $10 a pound. I often buy bags of all the tasty things I want, such as granola and raisins, and mix my own. (Also, watch out for trail mixes affected by the peanut butter salmonella recall.)
4. Powdered ice tea mixes or prepared flavored ice teas: Again, more work than buying these, but big savings by making iced tea from actual tea bags and keeping a jar in the refrigerator.
5. Bottled water: This has been reported again and again, and tap water is just as good and doesn’t require the cost of a plastic bottle, not to mention the problem of breaking down that bottle in a landfill.
6. Boxed rice “entree” or side dish mixes: Instead, buy a bag of brown rice and add your own herbs and seasonings.
7. Tomato-based pasta sauces. A $2 to $6 jar of spaghetti sauce can be made for less with $1 of canned tomatoes.

TweetShould you never pay full price again?
With the proliferation of coupon and discount sites, you may never need to pay full price for any item again.
As reported in some of the Sunday Here’s the Deal columns in the Dayton Daily News and in a story from the Wall Street Journal today, sites such as RetailMeNot.com, Coupons.com, DealHack.com and more, it makes less sense than ever to buy something that is not on sale or doesn’t have a coupon — or both.
According to the WSJ site, people are taking note.
The report that the research group comScore Inc. found that 27 million Americans visited coupon sites in October, up 33 percent from a year earlier.
And from from January to September 2008, the number of coupon-related Web searches doubled.
So, this is one trend it truly makes “cents” to embrace.

TweetDon’t get creamed on Starbucks “pairings”
Starbucks, the coffee giant that seems to be going to pot, has just announced to investors that it will unveil “several breakfast pairings” at “attractive prices,” according to WalletPop.com.
These pairings smack somewhat of competitor McDonald’s “value meals,” only with Starbucks’ already high prices.
Now, if they do end up providing a value, more power to them, but just beware of the familiar retail tactic of making folks spend more under the guise of a bargain.
As the site notes, if Starbucks happens to combine two or three items you already were buying together for a bargain price, go for it. Otherwise, avoid the “bargain.”

TweetObama calls out FDA in wake of peanut butter recalls
President Obama told Matt Lauer on the Today Show on Monday, Feb. 2, that he is ordering a “complete review” of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration due to the salmonella outbreak linked to the Peanut Corp. of America that has sickened more than 500 and been linked to the deaths of eight people.
In the conversation, Obama said that the peanut butter scandal has hit close to home. He said his youngest daughter, Sasha, eats peanut butter for lunch probably three times a week.
“I don’t want to have to worry about whether she’s going to get sick as a consequence to having her lunch.”
According to a story on NewsInferno.com, the FDA has long been criticized for a wide variety of issues, conflicts and failures, with the recent peanut butter debacle causing outrage nationwide.
Obama said the peanut butter contamination was just the most recent in an array of “instances over the last several years” in which “the FDA has not been able to catch some of these things as quickly as I expect them to catch.”
More than 800 products have been recalled, making it one of the largest recalls in history.

TweetGetting a good night’s sleep is important
Although this blog isn’t about a money-saving tip, per se, it’s important not to lose sight of taking care of yourself so you can be at the top of your game.
Let’s face it — life makes us tired, so if we’re well-rested, we can better-handle all of those stressors that crop up every day.
American Consumer News offers tips to get a good night’s sleep, which may be one of the best ways to remain healthy and mentally focused. The site, at www.americanconsumernews.com, also offers information about medical reasons that might be lurking behind your sleep problems and ways to beat the common cold.
Here are a few suggestions from Consumer News that may help:
Get GOOD sleep
Even though you sleep a lot, if it’s not restful sleep, it may not do you much good. Interruptions in your deep sleep cycle —kids, noise, light, bathroom trips — will keep you from getting quality sleep. The site suggests adults get between 7 and 9 hours of uninterrupted sleep each night, and you should be able to get up easily when the alarm goes off.
Schedule snoozing time
Your body will respond better to a regular sleep schedule, so stop going to bed at different times every night, the site suggests.
Go to bed and get up around the same time to help get your body clock back on track. Although it seems obvious, a good rule of thumb is to go to bed when you feel sleepy. If you still feel tired in the morning, start unwinding 30 minutes earlier the next night.
Let the sun shine
Studies show that you can have a better morning if you let natural bright light into your room when you wake up. According to the site, sunlight will help you to get going faster and remarkably help you fall asleep better at night.
No unnecessary stimulation
Avoid stimulants including caffeine. Alcohol can also disturb your sleep. To be sure you get a restful, deep sleep, stop the stimulants several hours before going to bed. Otherwise, you might wake up throughout the night or never fall into a deep enough sleep.
Nothing but sleep
Make your bedroom off-limits to anything but sleep. If you tend to do watch television or work in bed, you may have trouble winding down. The site suggests you keep the lights low and the tv off before climbing into bed.
Keep your tummy full
Eating a light, healthy snack a few hours before bed will help keep you full and help you fall asleep. Laying down on an empty stomach may make getting to sleep difficult. Avoid having heavy snacks or full meals near bedtime.
Don’t watch the Clock
On the nights you find that you can’t sleep, don’t stress out or stare at the clock because it can increase anxiety, the site says. Turn the clock away from you or get out of bed and read until you feel sleepy.

TweetWatch out for latest Facebook scam
Make sure you know your friends, and double-check if you think they need your help.
WalletPop.com reported last night that there is a new Facebook.com scam out there to watch out for.
In their story, Know your friends? Beware the latest Facebook scam, they tell of a guy named Bryan Rutberg, whose status on Facebook was changed to read “BRYAN IS IN URGENT NEED OF HELP!!!”
His friends were e-mailed a plea for cash that said he had been robbed at gunpoint in the United Kingdom, all while Rutberg was at home in Seattle, in bed.
Rutberg eventually realized his Facebook account had been hijacked, and was locked out of his account by the scammers.
By the time Rutberg was able to get back into his Facebook account, one of his friends had wired $1,200 via Western Union to London.
If nothing else, the report reminds us to make sure you get the whole story — especially when working with an online source — before you send cash anywhere.

Tweet5 best budget cell phones
Looking for a new cell phone? Looking for a bargain?
About.com compiled a list this week of the 5 best budget cell phones, with reviews of each.
The phones, which cost around $50, can be purchased at various carriers including AT&T, Virgin Mobile and T-Mobile.
Their top 5 budget phones are:
Samsung Slash for Virgin Mobile: Earned 4 out of 5 stars. Price: $69.99. It’s a slider phone with style, durability, the features you need and ultimately a low price. The phone cuts right to the core of everyday cell phone use.
Pantech C610 for AT&T: 4 out of 5 stars. Price: $49.99. The Pantech C610 flip phone for AT&T could very well be one of the better values you’ll find with among the most features you can have for this price.
Sony Ericsson W350 for AT&T: 3.5 out of 5 stars. Price: As cheap as $29.99. Dubbed the “thinnest flip phone available on the market” today, the Sony Ericsson W350 for AT&T also packs two other perks: it’s a feature-packed music phone and (like other handsets on this list) it’s affordable.
LG CU720 Shine for AT&T: 3.5 out of 5 stars. Price: $49.99. The LG CU720 Shine was released in the U.S. for AT&T to great fanfare because it steps things up several notches as compared to the LG KE970 Shine, which is its Asian and European counterpart.
Nokia 5310 XpressMusic for T-Mobile: 3.5 out of 5 stars. Price: $49.99. If the concept of the Nokia 5610 XpressMusic sounds about right but its $99.99 price doesn’t work on your budget, the Nokia 5310 XpressMusic is designed to be much like the higher-priced upgrade but for half the price.

TweetLead testing gets one-year stay
Some relief is offered to makers of children’s products due to a recent action by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission late last week.
Manufacturers and importers (large and small) of children’s products will not need to test or certify to the new lead and phthalates requirements, but will need to meet the lead and phthalates limits, mandatory toy standards and other requirements.
On Jan. 30, the CPSC voted unanimously to issue a one-year stay of enforcement for certain testing and certification requirements for manufacturers and importers of regulated products, including products intended for children 12 years old and younger.
The requirements are part of the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act, which added certification and testing requirements for all products subject to CPSC standards or bans. The law goes into effect Feb. 10.
Significant to makers of children’s products, the vote provides limited relief from the testing and certification requirements for new total lead content limits (600 ppm), phthalates limits for certain products (1000 ppm), and mandatory toy standards, among other things.
The stay will remain in effect until Feb. 10, 2010, at which time the CPSC will take a vote whether to terminate the stay.
The stay does not affect all items — such as cribs, pacifiers and jewelry made after a certain date — but should give some relief to crafters and the makers of children’s clothes and toys.
For more information, visit the CPSC Web site.

TweetOhio Attorney General warns of bogus employment scams
Most companies advertising jobs to Ohioans are offering legitimate jobs, but the Ohio Attorney General’s office recently warned consumers about employment scams.
The scams often revolve around a company making a phony job offers or false promises to people seeking employment. The scams are intended to make money for the scammers, and often come as realistic-looking e-mail messages containing links to computer viruses or phishing sites.
Scams usually start with a newspapers or Internet advertisement, promising good money and professional experience. The jobs listed are often either non-existent or very low paying. The fraudulent companies often charge high fees for job information, training sessions or promotional materials, merely bilking innocent job seekers out of lots of money.
Tips to avoid being scammed:
Don’t pay to work. If a job is legitimate, you will make money, not spend it. Being asked to pay for materials or other items up front signals a scam. Also beware of companies that ask you for payment to help you find work. Instead, check your local community one stop center for free resources and assistance. For Clark County’s OneStop center, click here www.clarkdjfs.org/workplus/workplus.html
Don’t trust unrealistic salaries or vague job descriptions. Many scam artists purposefully make generic, unclear claims about job opportunities. Before you commit to any job, make sure you understand exactly what kind of work is involved.
Research companies’ reputations. Before you schedule job interviews, check complaints filed against the business with the Ohio Attorney General’s Office at www.ag.state.oh.gov and the Better Business Bureau at www.bbb.org. Make sure business names are registered with the Ohio Secretary of State by visiting www.sos.state.oh.us.
Beware of lengthy contracts. Don’t sign a contract without reading the fine print because regardless of verbal promises, written contracts generally are binding. Take the contract to an attorney or trusted friend to review. Say no to high pressure sales and companies that do not allow you to review the contract independently.
Be wary of suspicious interviews. Interviews that take place at unusual locations, and no the company’s normal place of business are probably fishy. Be skeptical of group interviews and representatives that seem to be selling the company to you. If you feel pressured, walk away; you probably have good reason to be suspicious.
Watch for personal information ploys. A fraudulent company may deceptively offer a job opportunity to gain your personal information. To protect yourself from identity theft, limit the amount of personal information you give to a company. Never include your Social Security number, driver’s license or birth date on an online resume or share this information until you have confirmed that the employer and the job offer are genuine.
Don’t click on links sent in e-mails. These may be scams to steal your personal information or send a computer virus.
Steer clear of too-good-to-be-true offers that promise large paychecks for few hours of work. Your Mom was right — if it sounds to good to be true, well, you know the rest.

As reported by CNN, Kroger said it was recalling peanut butter store-baked and store-packaged cookies and select cakes because the products could be contaminated with salmonella.
No illnesses have been reported.
According to the FDA, peanut butter sold in jars — including Kroger-brand peanut butter — is not involved in the salmonella investigation.
Kroger said it is recalling all packages of the following Kroger, store-brand and Private Selection store-baked and store-packaged cookies:

Assorted and Variety Bakery Cookies - Regular and Jumbo

TweetMushrooms recalled for listeria
CNN reported this morning, Feb. 2, that a recall has been issued for enoki mushrooms produced by Phillips Mushroom Farms in Pennsylvania.
The recall covers 3.5-ounce packages of enoki mushrooms bearing UPC 33383 67540.
The mushrooms were packed in clear plastic bags with blue or green graphics and sold from Jan. 13-30. The report said that enokis are long, thin white mushrooms, often used in Asian cuisines.
Preliminary test results showed potential listeria contamination, but no illnesses have been reported, according to Phillips Mushroom Farms.
Listeria can cause flu-like symptoms, including fever and muscle aches, and sometimes gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea or diarrhea, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
It affects primarily the elderly, pregnant women, newborns and people with weakened immune systems.
Retailers are asked to remove the mushrooms from their shelves, pending further instructions, and consumers are asked to return the mushrooms to the place of purchase for a full refund.
For more information, visit Phillips Mushroom Farms site or call (800) 722-8818.

TweetTip for checking peanut butter products
Every day seems to bring more peanut butter recalls, and it is sometimes hard to wade through the Food and Drug Administration list to find an item you want to check.
I have found that if you have a specific item you want to check, visit that product’s Web site directly.
For instance, if you want to check on Reese’s Cups, (important to know — especially around Valentine’s Day) then visit the Hershey’s site. There is a note on there that lets you know that all Hershey’s products are safe, and not subject to recall.
This can be done with any product, and can save you time when searching.
If you want to scan multiple items or learn more about the recall, visit www.fda.gov.
