Poll: What is your favorite grocery store?

In this week’s Here’s the Deal column, I took a look at Dayton-area grocery stores. I noted what their actual prices were on a random day last week and what the shopping experience was like at each store.

I visited six area supermarkets — Kroger, Walmart, Sam’s Club, Meijer, Cub Foods and Dot’s Market — and noted what I thought to be the positives and negatives. I mentioned that most folks weigh prices, location and comfort level when choosing a favorite store.

And it made me wonder what grocery stores were the top picks for Miami Valley shoppers and why. What are your thoughts?

Why is Sam’s Club on this poll? It’s not so much a supermarket as a “megamart.” And where is Dorothy Lane Market? Along with Dot’s it’s a local market and it didn’t make the list?

Dot’s is on the list and Dorothy Lane Market is expensive for some. Not everyone can afford to go grocery shopping at Dorothy Lane Market. Unless you live in the stuck town of Springboro or Oakwood.

The article made Krogers appear to be the most expensive. When you consider their unlimited double coupons, cash back bonus and the customer coupons that are sent to me ,and their policy that if you are overcharged ,it is free, Kroger is most likely the least expensive.Plus, the employees are very helpful.

I think we should word the survey as: “What store do you go to most often”? The reason I state this is because I live across the street from a Meijer store. I wind up in there (on avg) 3 times a week because I either forgot something on a previous visit or ran out of something. It’s more of an addiction (a subconscious one perhaps) than favoring a store.

DLM not on the list, they have more locations than Dot’s. Anyway DLM appears to be expense because they sell alot of high end items and precooked foods. There staples foods are in line, price wise, as everyone else.

Dots in Dayton is very different than Dots in Bellbrook. Dayton has a GREAT meat counter and beer dept. though the store needs to be updated.

I work for Meijer (at the distribution center) but I shop almost exclusively at Kroger. Their produce puts ours to shame, and the new Kroger store in Englewood makes our store look even more like a dump. And Kroger still has plenty of something that’s becoming harder and harder to find at Meijer stores… cashiers. (I never go to any of the other stores listed, so I can’t really comment on them.)

What about Aldi or Sav-a-Lot? Their always low prices put the rest of those stores to shame (even WalMart).

Kroger is the best full-line grocery in Dayton period. For specialty items, Dorothy Lane Market is excellent!

Food is my #1 priority. I will spend whatever to get fresh local produce and no hormone free range meat. After all what is more important then my family’s health? One can not be healthy eating chemical and corn syrup filled food I shop at DLM & the farmers market. You have neither on your list.Too bad

Cub’s has as good of deals as Kroger’s, and you don’t need a stupid card to get the sales prices.

Dot’s Market for me, hands down. I’ve been shopping there almost exclusively for the last 15 years, the reason for that being is I tired quickly of the attitudes in the mega stores, of both employees and customers. Quite often Dot’s is competitive in pricing and sometimes even cheaper than other stores. It matters not to me though. I will pay the extra price to have a pleasant shopping experience. Not to mention their Deli items are hands down the best quality in the Miami Valley and I will not buy my meat anywhere else. If you have never been to Dot’s, it’s worth the trip to experience just once.

I shop at Fulmer’s in Fairborn. Customer service is great and they have excellent meat at a decent price.

I shop both Kroger and Walmart. I use coupons worth $1 at Walmart and anything under a $1 at Kroger. I only buy my meat at Kroger though. Treats for the pets are much cheaper at Walmart (as much as 1.50 less than Kroger). I like the rewards from Kroger though and the $.15 off gas.

I shop Kroger for their location to me, and their store brands are excellent. I shop Meijers if I have time and they have an exceptional ad. Dot’s on Patterson is close but too small. Walmart may be cheaper on somethings but it’s pricey on others.I’ll stick with Krogers.

I love shopping at DLM because I don’t have to look at the low lifes who ride the RTA buses.

I love Dorothy Lane Market because of their selection of hormone free meats, organic produce and one-of-a-kind items you can’t find anywhere else. They have the finest bread in town. They reward their customers with monthly coupons mailed to me plus several 12% off total bill coupons twice a year. Their customer service is EXCELLENT! I never hear people complaining about their working conditions there. I can’t believe you didn’t put them on your list! This newspaper is so biased as usual. So sad.

Dorothy Lane Market was not on this list because the column’s focus was on bargains, which is not the focus of DLM. DLM is an area gem that has excellent items to offer, which we do report on regularly. By the way, next week’s column will be a follow-up of stores mentioned here, and DLM will be among those featured.

Meijers has the best value for your money and they have unlimited double coupons as well. I prefer Krogers meat department and DLM’s deli and bakery for specialty items. Walmart’s prices are ridiculously high on everyday items.

Glenna - A card does not equal more savings. Kroger often has a few things cheaper than anyone, but Meijer is the most frequent “good deal” spot. I can list current examples - Ocean Spray Cranergy Meijer - $2.00 Kroger - $3.39 Ball Park franks Meijer - $1.25 Kroger - $3.29ish Glade Air Freshener Meijer - $0.99 (every day) Kroger - $1.00 (this week only) I could go on and on, and yes include the few Kroger steals, but this isn’t a biased thing. I shop largely on price. I track all the stores and prices in our area. Meijer blows Kroger and WM out of the water, especially when you count the (also doubled), coupons.

By James

smartmom - Meijer no longer doubles unlimited coupons. They will double only two like coupons. Just so people don’t get confused as they, for some reason, often do with this… you can get 100 coupons doubled at Meijer (any amount, so long as your making the purchases necessary to use the coupons), just two like coupons.

I prefer Kroger’s for groceries, Meijer and Walmart for non-food items. Meijer and Walmart have to be advertising an food item on sale in order for me to buy groceries there.

I think “bargain” is a relative term as I don’t consider the lowest cost on meat and produce to be a bargain to me if, in two or three days, the meat is rotten and the produce is starting to turn. If I plan to eat every thing I buy the day I buy it, great. If not, DLM is a bargain for my money.
