Which cable TV option is best?
Dayton-area cable TV providers are not created equally.
From price to service to reliability to ease of use, sometimes you don’t really know what you are getting until you have committed to a comprehensive package.
And sometimes — if you opt for a cable, phone and wireless bundle — you don’t find out you don’t like it until after you have changed your e-mail address or phone number, making your choice more complicated to undo.
To prevent others from signing up for cable TV they really wouldn’t want, and to get the real scoop on what cable TV option is best, let us know your experiences and what option you think is best.
Your responses, combined with data from cable companies and consumer advocate feedback, will help us advise Dayton-area residents as to what option is best for cable TV viewing. (See also, U-verse’s response.)

I switched from Time Warner Cable to DirecTV when I bought my house last summer and have never looked back. They offer more channels, more channels in HD (including all the locals), and more flexibility than TWC and all for a much, much lower price. We never lost Channel 2 because of a contract dispute, our signal didn’t go out in the wind storm, and we’ve had both NFL and MLB Networks for a while. Do yourselves a favor and get DirecTV today. You won’t regret it!

There is no question about it…DirectTV is the best option. From programming selections and options, equipment choices, and the easy to use website, I will never go back to “cable”. I love DirectTV!

I dumped Time Warner in December of 07 and it the best decision. Direct TV is way better. Don’t believe the scare tactics about how it goes out on a cloudy day or when it rains. It doesn’t!!

I was so peeved when I came home from work one day and my husband had Direct TV installed and Time Warner was gone. This was the best decision he’s ever made. During the wind storm our siding was blown away, but Direc TV never went out once. I would recommend this to anyone. Their pricing has barely increased on our bill from our first billing 3 years ago.

You guys must be employed by Direct TV. I have had Direct TV and it does get fuzzy when it rains hard, snows and high winds.I went back to cable. Direct TV is not cheaper. For what Direct TV offers for $70 per month you can have with cable for $55.00. You have to rent the hardware per set for $5 per month with Direct TV. You can not just hook up an extra TV with out it like cable. Go to Direct TV’s site and read the fine print.I get over 50 HD channels including all local with out having to put up any extra antenna like Direct TV. Cables the way to go

I hate Directv’s business model. Have to lease, pay for the equipment and you get a 2 year commitment as a bonus. After being a customer since 1995 I am leaving.

After TWC increased the price for basic/standard services to $60, we decided to move to satellite. Since we were looking for basic services, didn’t care about HDTV or sports, and had two tv’s, we decided on Dish Network. The dual receiver (for two tv’s) was included in the package price and even with DVR it was still $15 less than what we were paying TWC. And unlike DirectTV, it is not an ‘introductory’ price which goes up after the first few months. We love it and will never go back to cable!

Leave it to the DDN to run this. It must be a front for whichever company they prefer. How much money do you think they paid the DDN off for this?

I just bought a 48” HDTV. Had TWC upgraded to digital. So far it’s great. My GF and my best friend both have satellite tv. Both of which go out in a rain or snow storm. You’re asking which is best? Really? When it’s raining or snowing, that’s when people come in to watch TV. Unless you have a satellite. FACT!!! NOT a scare tactic…

Time Warner Cable; Channels 2-26; $10/month. We don’t watch that much television because we have two children. Maybe in 13 years when the youngest moves out we’ll think about adding channels.

Switching to sattelite and dumping TWC is the BEST move I ever made. TWC was twice the cost for the exact same package I have with my sattelite company. Not to mention the customer service is MUCH better (my opinion, TWC customer services is the rudest in the business)and I didn’t have to wait 2 weeks to have my sattelite installed. I have no weather issues with sattelite and I’ll never go back to TWC.

What’s wrong with saving a few bucks and using the FREE tv stations? I go to the library and borrow FREE movies. There are much better ways to use the money spent on cable than sitting on our large behinds and being couch potatoes! Donate the money to a charity and I guarantee you’ll have more enjoyment than watching TV.

TWC rates go up…service goes down. I was about to make several phone calls to HH Gregg (sold us a bad refrigerator) and Vectren (overall lousy service) when I picked up the phone…and heard no dial tone. FACT: TWC will not respond to your service calls unless multiple people in your area are out and make their own calls (on their cell phones)! Our community doesn’t allow dishes, so for us it’s TWC or nothing…and TWC knows it! Sad.

Anything but Time Warner. However, cable companies and cell phone providers are all disappointing.

We have had DirecTv for 6 years now and never once have my rates been raised. Unlike Time Warner who raise their prices every time the wind blows. Much better customer service also. And digital phone is a joke. I was getting everybody elses phone conversations in my ear.

Looks like there are a lot of Directv shills in here. I never had anything but problems with when I had Directv. The picture goes out all the time, and the technicians never seem to fix the problem. What most people dont realize is directv uses contractors for service appointments instead of in house technicians. Plus, my rate went up yearly with Directv.

Dish TV all the way!!! TWC kept raising their prizes and their service kept getting worse. I changed my phone # with TWC and got a bill for $60 more than my package. Called back and was informed that once you change your phone # it “kicks” you out of your package rate. Funny how they didn’t tell me that when I was changing the #. I’ve had Dish TV twice now and don’t have a problem with the stations going out during storms. I didn’t have to wait over 2 weeks to get it installed. And when I call them I get through quicker to a live person that with TWC’s automated crap.

Dish is cheaper than DirecTV. Check it out. Don’t try to tell me that cable is cheaper. And, strictly speaking, satellite TV is not cable, so the article title is flawed. We’ve had Dish for YEARS and never a problem. You don’t get that reliability with cable.

We had TWC for several years and finally began looking at options after rising frustration levels. Months ago we switched to AT&T. We have been very pleased with both our TV and internet service.

Wow!!!No contest Directv is by far the best. I had tw what a joke. Picture quality is horrible as is customer service. All of the tw fans must be “bundlers”. Ha!! Surrender quality for price well, you get what you pay for.

I have Time Warner HD. I get a free special feature that I call “automute”. The sound will go out for 30-45 seconds. And you don’t have to do a thing to turn it on or off. TW cant seem to fix it they have been out 3 times. Sad.
