Marion’s Piazza to offer pizza for 80 cents
On Monday, Aug. 10, all seven Marion’s Piazza locations will be turning back the clock to 1965 in honor of the restaurant’s 44th anniversary.
From 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday, Marion’s will feature its original 1965 menu — complete with original prices.
For example, those prices will be:
Small cheese pizza: 80 cents
Large deluxe pizza: $2.50
Giant sandwich: 50 cents for half, $1 for whole
Spaghetti with sauce: 75 cents, $1 with meatballs
Italian salads: 25 cents
Beverages will be regular price.
There is a limit of one major menu item per customer — one pizza, sandwich or spaghetti — and the restaurant is not taking seating reservations or other discounts that day. They also can’t accept half-baked or uncooked orders.
It is dine-in (although seating is not guaranteed) or carry-out, but the restaurant is not taking advance orders.
You may recall Marion’s having a deal like this a few years back. The restaurant usually features their 1965 Menu Anniversary promotion every five years, and the last time was in 2005.
But, due to the economy, Marion’s owner Roger Glass said they decided to move the special up a year.
“It has been a tough year for people in Dayton, so we felt we had to do something — give something back,” said Glass, citing the exit of businesses including NCR and GM.
“People (of Dayton) have been mighty nice to us,” he added. “We wanted to show that we’re still here and we’re not going anywhere.”
Glass said, if previous anniversary sales are an indicator, that Monday will be extremely busy at the restaurants.
“We’re going to be jammed from the moment we open to the moment we close,” he said, “but we will have extra help. There are ex-employees who want to come back and help.”
Glass, who added that the restaurant will probably resume its regularly scheduled anniversary specials next year, said he will be at the Shroyer Road location on Monday.
If anyone wants to stop by and talk to him, he said, “They can just ask for Roger.”
Area restaurants are at 711 Shroyer Road, 50 E. Stroop Road, 241 N. Main St. in Centerville, 8991 Kingsridge Drive, 1320 N. Fairfield Road, 3443 N. Dixie Drive and 404 W. National Road in Englewood.

I wish that all pizza and other restaurants would go back in time once in awhile that would be good for the community and business.

It is usually one per customer… but a couple of years ago when me and my husband went there during that special, we took my 4 nephews and got a total of 6 pizzas :)

Thanks for the question about limits on orders. I just updated the post with that information — it is one major menu item per customer.

Marions used to be my favorite but I don’t think it’s the same as it was just a few years ago. When I do go, I always ask that my pizza be baked in the old ovens, rather than on the conveyors. Still, something has changed I think!

I used to love Marion’s but I thought it began tasting different a few years ago. When I’ve gone, I ask that the pizza be baked in the old ovens rather than the conveyors but there’s something about it that isn’t the same…

I also think Marions has changed their pizza in some way. I had been away a few years and when I tried it again, it wasn`t the same. I think its the sausage. It seemed a bit dry.

It is dine-in or carry-out, but they aren’t going to take advance orders. So, you have to order there, but you can eat the pizza wherever you want.

You couldn’t GIVE me a pizza from this place. Those who believe this mass produced, prefab glob of dough, sauce, cheese and meat to be the “best”, are terribly misguided and obviously haven’t traveled far from the Dayton area. YUCH!!

Marion’s is the best pizza in town. Always ask for it in the old oven. Gives it a much better, baked thru taste. No better place to eat in town!

I live out of town now, and everytime I come home the first place I go is Marion’s to get a deluxe pizza. I love the pizza, but it is more than that…Marion’s is an institution the exact same pizza anywhere else would not be the same.

YES!!! This is great! I am so going to take advantage of this. Oh and Doc, I have traveled all over the world and most of the U.S. and still love Marion’s. It isn’t a cultured thing, dear. It is a great Dayton mainstay doing something kind for the APPRECIATIVE Dayton residents.Have dined at Marion’s since I was born, literally! My parents dated there in the 70’s and I will always support them with my business.

I wonder what Doc thinks a good pizza is supposed to be? Maybe he thinks Papa John’s is fantastic. I would bet a substantial amount of money that he couldn’t tell one pizza from another if he had to. It doesn’t have to be the “greatest”, it’s what people from Dayton eat.
By Doc
August 4, 2009 12:54 PM | Link to this
That’s okay, AK. I’ve traveled extensively as well and just love Speedway’s pizza!! ;) Guess there’s no accounting for taste, is there? And if their so good, why do they not support the little league, accept credit cards or give refills of soda? Greediness? Cheap? Both?
By eric
August 4, 2009 1:12 PM | Link to this
Obviously people don’t seem to care if they give free refills or accept credit cards. And there draft beer prices are the cheapest in town. Cassanos probably takes credit cards, gives free refills, and gives money to little league. But it definately hasn’t helped their business. Go to Marions on a friday night and then to Cassanos and look at their crowd.

Just because you play in a beer softball league doesn’t mean everybody needs to bend over backwards for you. Why do rec softball players think they’re a big deal? Marion’s owes no one anything more than they give.Even tbill.

Doc, it is a business. There is no law saying that all businesses must be philanthropic. Maybe this anniversary pricing is as far as they would like to go charitably. The point is, businesses are in it first and foremost to make money. Don’t be naive.

Not naive. Just very giving. Plus, it’s great PR and great for their respective neighborhoods… But you’re right; it’s just business. One that I do not patronize.

Doc, as a former employee, I can atest to the fact that none of the pizza is “a mass produced, prefab glob of dough, sauce, cheese and meat”. The dough is made at the Dixie location for all stores and each pizza is handmade. I know I certainly put in plenty of hours making and cooking pizzas. I do think they taste best in the old oven (Roger, are you hearing this? Most people don’t like the conveyor belt!!) but I still think the pizza is fantastic!! How many places can you work for for 8 years and still love the food there?!?!
By Diane
August 4, 2009 3:32 PM | Link to this
Doc if you don’t patronize them why did you even find it necessary to read the article and post a comment. As far as the quality of the pizza, they happen to use some of the best and freshest meat in the area which is from Landes, so please do a little research before you go spouting off nonsense. And as far as taste, do you have any idea how many people have moved from this area and still have this pizza shipped to them, so who are you to insult anyones taste.

For those who continue to try to put Marions down calling it mass produced they apparently dont even read the menu! All doughes are made by the company from scratch and the fresh ground sausage comes from one of the Dayton areas best butchers! Landes Fresh Meats in Clayton…If you want to make a stink about something at least check your facts!

Like I said; there is NO accounting for taste. I made a comment because I’m Ialian. My mother and grandmother made homemade pies. (pizza) I’ve been to Italy and a couple “Little Italys” in this country. What Marions serves closely resembles pizza, but…

Don’t care if the pizza is real Italian…tell me what American pizza chain makes pizza the way it comes in Italy? Marion’s tastes great. Frankly I could stand to see them lose the Joan Rivers and Burt Reynolds photos, update the decor, and add a few windows. But the food is great.

People, people, people, Let’s use some common sence please! It doesn’t take a high IQ to figure out that if you like Marion’s pizza, please enjoy the special discounts that the owner is offering, at his financial loss, on that day. If you don’t like it, just don’t go. After all, we are in America. It is your own choice.

Having grown up elsewhere and moving to Dayton just a few years ago, I heard a ton of praise and such about Marion’s. It took awhile, but I finally tasted some about 2 years ago. I wasn’t impressed, honestly. It was pizza. shrug We’ve also ordered their salads for take-out here at work, and again, good but nothing I’d kill to have again. Cheap pizza is good, fresh (non-frozen) pizza is good. Waiting two hours amidst a chaotic crowd and paying for multiple drinks with no refills… not so much. Think I’ll stay home and let my husband make pizza for us instead.

Marion’s is ok but not as good as it was back in the 70’s! or as good as Cassanos. They need to get some newer pictures of the stars that get free stuff there. Anybody that’s 30 or younger doesn’t have a clue who most of the stars in those pictures are! They need to get into the 21st century and take credit cards.

Quit complaining about the credit cards. The economy is the way it is party because of credit cards. If you can’t buy it then you shouldn’t be getting it. It’s an old favorite. I don’t think I would enjoy it as much if they Updated the “decor” and got all fancy. It brings back the old days. It has that “feels like home” effect on ya.And the pizza..To some it may just be the norm. not too good but not too bad. But to us it’s awesome. Maybe it’s not just based on the taste. it’s the whole experience. You complain that they don’t support your softball teams. well go to the mall and see if american eagle or all those stores if they’ll do it…Marions isnt a national pizza chain. Therefore I don’t think they should. They give back to their own community in ther OWN ways.Like this special. going out of their way to do it.”usually only every 5 yrs.should be nxt yr” and as a matter of fact I know some ppl that have been managers and they also donate $ and give in other ways. just bc they dnt support u doesn’t mean they don’t do it at all. Get your facts straight. MARIONS. FRESH PRODUCT. GREAT PRICES.GREAT ENVIROMENT.AND DID I SAY YUMMY???

For the one that said they need updating. There is a newer marrions by the dayton mall that was built after the old one was burnt down. “Tragedy” but if you prefer a newer atmosphere dining experience. Then you should try there. It’s awesome. inside and out. and to Jamie, I agree. You shouldn’t trash a place just because of credit cards. The refill thing does kind of stink. but pizza hut also did that for years just like a lot of places used to. they are not the only ones that don’t offer refills. most food courts don’t. Fairs, carnivals. etc. and you ppl aren’t trashing them. If you have nothing but bad things to say about a place. then why come to a website and search for it and take time out of your day to read about it and post a comment. “do you secretly like it” lol

Doc, you are right. Roger does not give away free food to softball teams who can afford to buy it. but instead gives it away to homeless shelters and ect who NEED it. You talk about marions and roger not giving back…well what do you call the roll back sale?, just a thought, but i would like to know how many million dollar plus companys you know of or have worked for where the OWNER signs your paycheck, or works in the store beside you, or better yet leaves you his cellphone number to call if you have a problem, with the economy as bad as it is he still gave an x-mas bonus to his managers, and a rais eto his employees. better yet not one single person has been laid off. So when you talk about giving back i think he gives enough.

If you don’t have $3 in cash DO NOT COMPLAIN about them not accepting credit cards because you have more important things to worry about! Credit card processing is expensive, I don’t blame them. If I take the offer today I am going to do take-out and use my own drinks at home.

Grew up eating Marion’s.It’s still my favorite. Moved away and feel so pizza deprived because there is no Marion’s. Must Drive an hour and a half to go get good pizza. And are happy to do it.When I was 11 or so the Dayton Gems(a hockey team) used to hang there. Was a big deal for us to see them and sometimes some of the Reds Baseball players. In the Days of Pete Rose, Johnny Bench, and Tony Perez. Was a big thrill for us.This was the one on Dixie. Now we meet our children and grandchildren and now a greatgrandbaby there, for Thanksgiving Eve,Christmas Eve & B.Days.At various different Marions. I think it’s still the best pizza I’ve ever had.Cassano’s is close but not as good. Marion’s will always have the best thin crust. Most pizza places have no clue how to make a good thin crust. And I think the promotion is great with the old prices. Will be going to the Marion’s on Fairfield Rd. Sat. to meet the kids for the Popcorn festival.Son-in-Laws Band is playing there from 3-5. I am salivating just thinking of having great pizza once again. Thumbs up to you Marion’s. You Rock!
