Top 12 money-saving tips for 2010
Happy New Year!
If one of your resolutions for 2010 is to save money, here are 12 ways to make that happen:
— Evaluate your spending from the previous year. Where did you spend too much? How can that be corrected this year? Then make a budget and stick to it. Being organized reduces the chance of overspending.
— Refinance your mortgage. The rates have been extremely low lately. Call your bank to see what the rate is and how much you can save.
— Use the library. Get access to books, DVDs, CDs and video games for free.
— Use coupons every time you go grocery shopping. It is a small time investment, but can net sizable savings.
— Bring your lunch to work. Limit expensive coffee trips. A good creamer can go a long way.
— Cook more, and make a lot. Leftovers are free meals.
— Watch for sales on items you buy all the time and stock up. Check out thrift stores to see what they have to offer.
— Take care of yourself. Wash hands, eat and drink less. This is not only a happier way to live, but it will save you money at the doctor.
— Take care of your car. Routine maintenance goes a long way.
— Shop around for insurance. Are you paying too much?
— If you plan to travel, shop around for the best fares and hotel rates. There are many to sites (such as Travelocity and CheapTickets, as well as aggregate sites such as Kayak) to help you.
— Pay yourself first. Put a select amount of your paycheck into savings immediately, before you have a chance to spend it. Make a deal with yourself to leave that money alone except in case of emergency.
