Top 12 money-saving tips for 2010
Happy New Year!
If one of your resolutions for 2010 is to save money, here are 12 ways to make that happen:
— Evaluate your spending from the previous year. Where did you spend too much? How can that be corrected this year? Then make a budget and stick to it. Being organized reduces the chance of overspending.
— Refinance your mortgage. The rates have been extremely low lately. Call your bank to see what the rate is and how much you can save.
— Use the library. Get access to books, DVDs, CDs and video games for free.
— Use coupons every time you go grocery shopping. It is a small time investment, but can net sizable savings.
— Bring your lunch to work. Limit expensive coffee trips. A good creamer can go a long way.
— Cook more, and make a lot. Leftovers are free meals.
— Watch for sales on items you buy all the time and stock up. Check out thrift stores to see what they have to offer.
— Take care of yourself. Wash hands, eat and drink less. This is not only a happier way to live, but it will save you money at the doctor.
— Take care of your car. Routine maintenance goes a long way.
— Shop around for insurance. Are you paying too much?
— If you plan to travel, shop around for the best fares and hotel rates. There are many to sites (such as Travelocity and CheapTickets, as well as aggregate sites such as Kayak) to help you.
— Pay yourself first. Put a select amount of your paycheck into savings immediately, before you have a chance to spend it. Make a deal with yourself to leave that money alone except in case of emergency.

Another way to save. If your Family drinks pop from cans, instead of putting them in the recycle bin is to save them yourself. Then cash them in at your local recycle buy back center. They even buy back paper that is recycable. That is if have the room to do this.

Even better, drink water instead of pop, it is better for you and it is free!!!Also, start a garden, even if it is a few tomato plants in pots on the patio. It can really save on your food bill. I have a large garden and I can and freeze most of it, so we save all year round and have good healthy food!!!

You can save quite a lot by buying things you use daily in bulk. A 36 roll pack of tp can last you for at least a couple of months, the same with paper towels, and other necessities. Buy the big bottles of cleaners, and invest in a cheap spray refillable bottle. Don’t buy a new bottle of softener every time you need it. Buy the carton and refill your bottles.

Before making a purchase ask yourself: “Is this something I “want” or something I “need”?” If it’s just something you “want” then you probably shouldn’t buy it. Make sure it’s something you are really going to use. Also before you buy something, make sure you don’t already have it. This may involve looking for the one you already do have, however.

Is it worth working for? We are a homeschool family with one income, and we also buy in bulk as often as possible AND try to stock up when we find big sales. But, one of the biggest adjustments we have made is we try to figure out how long “Dad” has to work to pay items that we want. Most times what we think we need isn’t really worth all the hours of hard work that need to be put in just to purchase it. Is that big screen TV really worth the almost 100 hours that needs to be worked to pay for it? Not in our house.
