Deals this week on fitness, school supplies

Here are some of the better deals this week at area stores:

Today, Jan. 3, is the final day of Macy’s New Year’s Kick-off Sale, with savings of up to 85 percent off. That sale started Wednesday.

Staples and Office Depot appear to have gone back to back-to-school sales, hoping to catch some shoppers before their return to college.

Staples has multiple supplies for $1, including one-subject notebooks, dry erase markers, scissors and composition books. The store also has a 60-sheet pack of Photo Plus 4-by-6-inch paper for $1, after rebate. That paper is regularly $9.99.

As for more high-tech supplies, Staples also has 4GB USB flash drives for $12.99 (regularly $19.99) and a 100-pack of Sony CD-R media discs for $15.98 (they are regularly $42.98), among other savings.

Office Depot also is going the dollar deal route on select supplies. In addition, the store has multiple storage totes and stacking crates for buy one, get one free. The store also is running a sale on PCs, offering up to $150 off.

Kmart is trying to help some of us keep at least one new year’s resolution by having “all fitness” items on sale, and buy-one-get-one-free deals on many types of vitamins.

Dick’s Sporting Goods also has fitness equipment on sale.

For example, this week you can get $1,000 off a 20-inch-by-55-inch treadbelt Livestrong Treadmill, with the final cost being $999.99.

At Kmart, you can get a 18-inch-by-50-inch treadbelt Weslo Pro CrossWalk treadmill for $379.99.

The Dick’s treadmill is bigger and sturdier, but the final price is cheaper at Kmart. It is always good to remember, when buying fitness equipment, that classified ads and sites like eBay are good places to check as well.

Kmart also is having a family footwear clearance of up to 50 percent off, and Dick’s is in the midst of a storewide clearance sale with 40 percent to 70 percent off select clothes and shoes.

Also this week, Sears is selling fall and winter apparel for up to 60 percent off and is having its semiannual “intimate event,” with deals of 30 percent to 50 percent off all bras, panties and shapewear.

If you have pets, SuperPetz has a clearance section that has discounts of up to 90 percent off storewide, and Complete Petmart is having a winter stock-up sale offering discounts on pet food, chews and toys.
