Benefits, pitfalls of loyalty programs; top deals on TVs, candy, home items

Being a consumer today is more complicated than ever.

The Internet and its myriad possibilities offer many more ways to save money, but also more ways to lose money.

The key is to be a well-informed consumer.

Here are some tips:

Click with caution

Many products and stores have rewards programs, fan pages and memberships.

Most are straight-forward and can get you added coupons and sales information.

There are some, however, that contain little financial land mines.

Both the New York Times and ShopSmart; magazine, a product of Consumer Reports, noted this practice of clicking into trouble recently.

ShopSmart; reported that some well-regarded companies, including Priceline.com and Classmates.com, allow other Web sites to step in at the completion of a sale to offer “deals.”

By clicking on some of these extraneous links, customers can incur unwanted membership fees.

A good example of this was documented by New York Times’ consumer blogger David Segal.

Segal published a letter from a reader who was in the process of signing up for a free trial at BlueMountain.com, decided to cancel and then clicked on a box to get extra coupons.

However, that click got him enrolled in the site’s membership club and he was charged $19.99 to his credit card, which he had provided for the free trial.

He later found that BlueMountain.com had earned several complaints.

There always will be scams such as these, but here are some ways to protect yourself:

— Always read the fine print. Know what you are getting into with each click. If you have to “allow” certain clicks, consider whether you want to open up your computer to that site.

— Check on a Web site just like any other company. Look for a Better Business Bureau icon on the site’s home page and/or check with the BBB directly at www.dayton.bbb.org. Another site to check is ComplaintsBoard.com.

— Guard your credit card number. Online purchases are overwhelmingly safe, but don’t give out your information unless you know where it is going and what it is for.

— Go over your bank statement each month. Make sure nothing is being charged to your account erroneously.

Create a buffer

Again, there are many Web sites that are legitimate and offer great discounts and sales information if you become a member of their online club.

Some good programs include those by CVS/Pharmacy, Macy’s and T.G.I.Friday’s.

However, you may want the perks of the programs without the many e-mails (and occasional spam) that come with them.

If this is the case, consider opening up an e-mail account just for these deals.

That way, you can troll through the account when you are planning to make a purchase, without affecting your daily correspondence.

Check on rumors

As noted in this blog last week, there have been urban legends as long as there have been urban dwellers, but e-mail has given them extended life.

The best way to check on these types of consumer rumors is to visit Snopes.com

The site is dedicated to investigating these rumors and providing consumers with the truth.

Deals this week

Getting into the spirit of how best to watch the big game, many area stores have deals on TVs this week.

The 1080p TVs reportedly offer more than twice the resolution as the 720p, so they are more expensive.

HHgregg has a great deal this week on a 42-inch LG 1080p LCD HDTV for $598.77. The regular price is $849.99.

Best Buy has a 42-inch Class 1080p LCD HDTV for $614.99 (save $185), and a 47-inch Class 1080p LCD HDTV for $799.99 (save $400).

Morris Home Furnishings has a Sony 32-inch Flat Panel LCD HDTV for $398 (was $599) and a 46-inch Sony 1080p LCD HDTV for $778 (was $1,299).

Walmart has a Sanyo 37-inch 1080p LCD HDTV for $448, and a Vizio 42-inch 1080p LCD HDTV for $638.

Target has a Magnavox 42-inch 720p LCD HDTV for $499 (save $180), but Sears has a Zenith 42-inch 720p plasma HDTV for $449.99 (save $200).

For Valentine’s Day, some of the best deals this week are at CVS/Pharmacy, which has heart-shaped candy for as low as 88 cents, with the Extra Care Bucks card.

However, CVS’ heart-shaped box of Reese’s miniatures is $4.99, and you can get the same box for $3.99 at Target and Discount Drug Mart.

Target also has conversation hearts for two for $4.

Rite Aid has Twilight, Hello Kitty, and sports-themed heart-shaped candy boxes, among others, for $3.99 to $7.99.

Walgreens has a variety of small heart-shaped boxes of candy for two for $3.

As far as valentines, Aldi has an assorted mix of 34 for $1.49, and Discount Drug Mart has 32-count boxes for as little as $1.39.

Walgreens has valentines for $1.99 for a 32- or 48-pack. Rite Aid’s are buy one get one free, and cost $1.99 to $3.99. CVS’ valentines are comparable — buy one, get one free for $2.99.

JCPenney has its biggest savings between today and Tuesday on items for the home.

The deals include a deluxe air bed, which is regularly $99.99, for $39.99 after rebate, and 40 percent to 60 percent off all cookware.

There is a two-day home sale today and Monday at Kohl’s, with home savings up to 50 percent off, and a “winter blowout” at Elder-Beerman, with 50 percent off multiple items as well.

Value City Furniture correction, deal

Last week, I mentioned that the only area Value City Furniture location was in Beavercreek. That was incorrect.

There also is a Value City Furniture near the Dayton Mall at 2070 Miamisburg-Centerville Road.

Noteworthy as well is that the stores are having a deal this week on Power packages, which feature groups of furniture sold for one price.

For example, starting at $1,399, customers can get a sofa, chair, end table, cocktail table, entertainment center and, as with all the store’s power packages, a 42-inch 1080p LG HDTV.

“Princess and the Frog” necklaces recalled

“Princess and the Frog” necklaces and pendants, sold at Walmart since November for $5, have been recalled because they contain high levels of cadmium.

Cadmium is toxic if ingested by young children and can cause adverse health effects, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.

The recalled jewelry is shaped as a metal crown or frog pendant on a metal link chain necklace in a crown hinged box. The crown is model No. 4616-4187, UPC No. 72783367144, and the frog is model No. 4616-4190, UPC No. 72783367147.

The CPSC noted that consumers should return the recalled jewelry to any Walmart store for a full refund or a free replacement product.

USA Today added that this recall marks the first time any consumer product has been recalled in the U.S. because of cadmium.

Home Services USA offers insurance coverage for water service lines.

However, although the mailer includes the words “Montgomery County,” Montgomery County Water Services is not affiliated with nor a partner of Home Services USA.

Massive auto recalls prompt safety tips

Toyota announced a massive recall this month, pulling back 2.3 million more vehicles to fix accelerator pedals that can stick, causing cars to speed out of control.

The announcement came after 4.2 million Toyotas were recalled late last year due to gas pedals that could become trapped under floor mats, causing sudden acceleration.

In response to these issues, Consumer Reports assembled a helpful list of how to stop a runaway car, if you find it accelerating beyond your control.

It never hurts to review these tips if, like me, you own a Toyota (although not one listed in the recall) and just want to err on the safer side of life.

In related news car recall news, if you didn’t see it on the business page of our Web site today, Jan. 29, Honda announced a huge recall of its own.

Honda is recalling 646,000 Fit/Jazz and City models because window switches can overheat when exposed to liquids, potentially causing smoke, melting or fire.

Where are the 10 dirtiest hotels in U.S.?

TripAdvisor recently released its 2010 list for the country’s top 10 dirtiest hotels, based on traveler reviews.

Thankfully, none of Ohio’s gems are on that list. Then again, not as many folks are taking vacations to Ohio as compared to say, California, which has the most on the list with three.

However one each from Missouri and Pennsylvania made the filthy fare, so that shows that if you really apply yourself, you can succeed no matter the circumstances.

Here is TripAdvisor’s top 10 dirtiest hotels for 2010:

  1. Heritage Marina Hotel, San Francisco, California

  2. Days Inn Eureka/Six Flags, Eureka, Missouri

  3. Tropicana Resort Hotel, Virginia Beach, Virginia

  4. Super 8 Virginia Beach/At the Ocean, Virginia Beach, Virginia

  5. Quality Inn, Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania

  6. New York Inn, New York City, New York

  7. Parisian Hotel & Suites, Miami Beach, Florida

  8. Capistrano Seaside Inn, Capistrano Beach, California

  9. Desert Lodge, Palm Springs, California

  10. Continental Oceanfront Hotel South Beach, Miami Beach, Florida

To read some of the travelers’ reviews — like “had the ambiance of fresh vomit” about the Heritage Marina Hotel — see the TripAdvisor site and click on the hotel name.

TripAdvisor also has a list of the top 25 hotels in the country, based on traveler reviews.

Ohio did have one on that preferred list, the Marriott Cleveland Downtown at Key Center in Cleveland, which came in at No. 18.

Sheets and blankets are 50 percent off, men’s suit separates are 50 percent to 60 percent off, and men’s and young men’s long-sleeve shirts and hoodies are 75 percent off, among many other big discounts.

HHgregg is the store that has all TVs on sale through Saturday.

For example, the store has an 37-inch LG LCD HDTV for $499.97 (regularly $649.99) and a 46-inch Sony XBR Bravia 1080p LCD HDTV for $1,635 (originally $$2,399.99). With the latter TV purchase, you can get a free Blu-ray player.

iPad to start at $500; see cool demo

As was announced earlier today, Jan. 27, Apple has unveiled its long-awaited tablet-style computer with on-screen keyboard, and named it the iPad.

Pricing will start at $499 for the 16-gigabyte version, $599 for the 32-gig version and $699 for the 64, according to CNN.

As for a preview, Sports Illustrated put together a cool demo of the new device late last year. Check it out here.

The one thing that is giving me pause about today’s announcement is the name. Is anyone else kind of put off by “iPad”?

I had heard it would be called iSlate or iTablet or a host of others, and I would guess it was named as such to be more in line with the iPod and the iPhone.

Maybe I just have to get used to it. Maybe not.

What do you think?

Cell phone, gas pump scams debunked

There have been urban legends as long as there have been urban dwellers — there are just more ways to further these ideas with our many communication mediums.

A couple rumors have floated past my desk of late and need to be addressed:

— You have to register your cell phone numbers with the “do not call list” to avoid them being sent to telemarketers.

— Debit card information is being used by others if you don’t press “clear” after you use your card at the gas pump.

Fortunately, both of these are false.

A good site to check when you hear about these consumer rumors is Snopes.com. The site is dedicated to investigating urban legends and giving consumers the straight dirt.

Here is the site’s post about the cell phone numbers, and the one about the extra gas pump charges.

It always helps to Google the topic you are concerned about, also, to find out additional information.

For instance, by checking out the gas pump rumor you find that there are other potential pitfalls with using your debit card at the pump.

The Credit Union Times, for instance, did an informative story this week on “Sophisticated Gas Pump Skimming Thieves Are Filling Up Their Wallets.”

These occurrences are rare, but may make you choose to go with the credit option rather than debit in this particular case.

At any rate, your best defense is to be well-informed.

Menard’s, Macy’s sales today; Kohl’s tries a new sales tack

Menard’s is starting a hardware sale today, Jan. 27, for those of you who are getting in a springtime state of mind.

There are select circular saws for as low as $79, cordless drills for $75, sanders for $13, routers for $90 and more on sale, as well as myriad tools for less than $20.

The store, which has locations in Tipp City and Sidney, also has laminate flooring for 99 cents a square foot.

Macy’s is still in a clearance state of mind, offering their 60 percent to 85 percent off select clothing storewide again this weekend. That sale is through Sunday, Jan. 31.

And Kohl’s, it seems, is trying something new.

The store is planning a sale from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday morning, offering 100 early-bird specials.

What is different is, on its Web site, Kohl’s has all the sale items listed and the ability to create a shopping list to take with you to the store on Saturday.

That is kind of a neat idea, and could be pretty helpful.

What do you think — do you think you’ll use that shopping list?

Helicopter can catch fire, horse carrying too much lead

Two toys were recalled Tuesday, Jan. 26, by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.

horse.jpg
Horse called back to the stables.

They were the remote-control Danbar Knight Hawk Toy Helicopter, sold at Radio Shack, and the Nature Wonders HD Pinto Horse Toy Figures, sold at Walmart.

The helicopter’s issue, according to the CPSC, is that the canopy can overheat while charging, posing a fire hazard.

The horse has a paint coating that contains excessive levels of lead, and violates the federal lead paint standard.

For more info about the helicopter, call (800) 843-7422 or visit www.radioshack.com.

39 tips to save money while dining out

It is no secret that eating at a restaurant can be costly, although many have been more generous with their deals in the last year.

According to a post by The Coupon Sherpa, a recent study by Zagat indicated 33 percent of Americans polled now pay more attention to restaurant prices than in the past and 28 percent of diners have switched to cheaper restaurants.

In response, some restaurants have made changes to cut back on expenses. These changes can result in less food for your money, added surcharges and cheaper ingredients.

To help identify some of these tactics and avoid overspending, the Coupon Sherpa has put together a list of 23 ways restaurants save money.

Also, toward this same budget dining end, the site also put together a post documenting 16 strategies to save money eating out.

The strategies include watching what you drink, making a meal of appetizers and getting your food to go.

Plan ahead to get deals for Valentine’s Day

The beauty of Valentine’s Day is that, unless you are proposing marriage or making some other grand gesture of love, the holiday doesn’t require a lot of planning.

ftd.jpg
Let Love In Valentine’s Day Bouquet, starting at $34.99 at FTD. As shown, $44.99.

But, a little thought early on can help you get what you want, avoid last-minute pitfalls and save money.

Angie’s List, a site that provides consumer tips and info, noted that it is best to order flowers early to get the best selection, price and service.

Online flower shops are already reaching out with deals to get your business.

For example, today, Jan. 26, the Deal Seeking Mom had a great deal on 50 spray roses from 1-800-FLOWERS.

“They’re priced at $24.99, but you can score them as low as $13.69 when you shop through Ebates to get 12 percent cash back on your order. As always, new members will receive an additional $5 bonus on their first purchase.”

Other flower deals to check out right now are at:

ProFlowers has a deal on two-dozen assorted Valentine’s Day roses for $39.97 (regularly $49.97). The online shop also has an all-in-one Valentine’s Day special that has a dozen long-stemmed red roses and baby’s breath, a bear, chocolates and a ruby vase. That gift is $59.97 (usually $89.98).

TeleFlora has $10 off its Valentine’s Day selections today.

FTD has multiple, beautiful options for $34.99.

BloomsToday has 50 percent off orders made today. The site’s prices start out high — with a dozen long-stemmed roses for $59.99 — but the discount makes them a decent choice.

Oberer’s Flowers has a dozen Rembrandt Roses, bittersweet and berries in a 6-inch glass for $19.95, among other offerings.

I will note other Valentine’s Day deals here as they become available.

Dayton-area shops planning sizable discounts for the holiday can e-mail me for consideration in these posts.

Apple tablet to be unveiled Wednesday

The highly anticipated introduction of the Apple tablet device is set for 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 27, in San Francisco. (10 a.m. PST)

Wired has a good article on what they think you should expect.

The article a little history on the device, ways to follow the unveiling via Twitter and the following speculatory details about the new device:

— 10- to 11-inch tablet

— Resembling the iPhone hardware

— Running a substantially expanded version of the iPhone OS

— Probably called iSlate (TechCrunch also noted this name.)

— With a new, non-QWERTY interface

— Possibly available in two versions, LCD and OLED

— With Wi-Fi and 3G data connections.

PCWorld speculated last week that Apple may produce two versions of the device so it will be available to the 3G networks of both Verizon and AT&T.

PCWorld also noted it also is possible that Apple will not have a carrier deal lined up Wednesday, which may delay pricing announcements.

And, as broached by many publications, PCWorld talked Monday about how the tablet can help save the struggling publishing world.

In other Apple news, DealMac cited a deal offered by TheMacBundles.com.

The site has its January Mac Bundle for $49.95, which is a reported savings of $434 compared to list price for each program. For a list of the apps offered, check out the DealMac site.

That deal ends Feb. 13.

More than a million pounds of salami recalled

The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced Saturday, Jan. 23, that 1,240,000 pounds of ready-to-eat varieties of Italian sausage, “including salami/salame,” have been recalled because they may be contaminated with salmonella.

For a list of the recalled products, visit the USDA site.

The company named in the recall is the Rhode Island-based Daniele International, which exports to multiple states.

According to a story by USA Today, this recall comes “after six months of painstaking work by health officials at both the federal and state levels who have been trying to track down the cause of a national outbreak of a relatively common form of the disease, called Salmonella Montevideo.”

The outbreak, which may have sickened at least 184 people in 38 states, was first reported in July but could not be pinpointed until now.

Consumers with questions can call Daniele International at (888) 345-4160.

Target launches new deals for new year

Target, which is listed by the National Retail Federation as the second largest U.S. retailer, appears to be actively shooting for No. 1.

Fresh off a very competitive holiday season in which the store battled a variety of retailers — including No. 1 Walmart — in selling a diverse array of products, Target hasn’t showed any signs of slowing down in 2010.

This month, the store has kicked off and announced the expansion of multiple projects to entice shoppers and increase its market reach.

These efforts include:

The Great Save Event is a six-week project that is offering deals on bulk items, like those that can be found at Sam’s Club.

“Every year we always hold a post-holiday event,” said Jana O’Leary, a spokeswoman for Target Corp.

“We know our guests are looking for ways to stretch their dollars, so this year we are having The Great Save Event, which is a warehouse club event.

But there are no membership fees.”

Likely because it is a short-term event, Target seems to be able to offer discounts that are competitive with Sam’s Club.

For example, this week Target has many bulk grocery items for $4.99: a three-pack of Clorox Wipes, a 44-ounce box of Life cereal and a box of 30 Quaker granola bars.

Sam’s Club doesn’t have these items in packages this “small,” but if the price was adjusted to match per item, at Sam’s the granola bars would be $4.67, the cereal would be $4.44 and the wipes would be a whopping $9.50 (they are $12.97 for four at Sam’s Club).

Of course, the selection of bulk items is larger at Sam’s, and the Target program is for a limited time.

O’Leary said The Great Save Event ends Feb. 21.

TV delivery and installation service: In a program that started Sunday, Jan. 17, Target is offering TV delivery and set-up starting at $99, TV on-wall installation starting at $199, TV recycling for $50, video game console set-up for $99 and home network set-up for $99 at Target.com.

Target will provide this service for TVs bought at Target or elsewhere.

To compare, Target’s installation service price frame tops out at $349, whereas Best Buy’s can be up to $799. Walmart’s services range from $99 to $399.

Partnering with Converse, Pixi: It is not unusual for retailers to partner with brands to be able to carry them at lower prices, but Target cornered two specific markets this month — Converse and Pixi.

Due to this month’s agreement, spring’s Converse One Star collection will be available solely at Target stores nationwide and at Target.com.

Also, the new collection from Pixi, a worldwide beauty product line, will launch exclusively at Target stores nationwide and Target.com in March.

P-Fresh: In an ongoing project that has yet to reach the Dayton area, Target has been remodeling stores across the country to allow for its grocery-expanding P-Fresh initiative.

“P-Fresh means more fresh food selection,” O’Leary said, including fruit, meat and baked goods. “This year we plan to roll out the P-fresh concept in 350 more Target stores across the country.”

O’Leary could not confirm if those stores would be in the Dayton area.

Deals on furniture, home items, clothes

In other retail news, furniture sales abound this week in area stores.

Elder-Beerman is in the midst of its semiannual furniture and home sale.

The furniture sale, which runs through Feb. 11, includes 35 percent to 50 percent off all in-stock home entertainment and home office furniture, 30 percent to 50 percent off all recliners, 35 percent to 50 percent off all contemporary styles in bedroom and dining furniture, 40 percent to 50 percent off all area rugs and more.

The home sale, which ends Saturday, Jan. 30, has 50 percent to 60 percent off multiple items, and 75 percent off select heated blankets and mattress pads.

Sears is having a big home fashions sale, marking down related items 60 percent to 75 percent.

JCPenney is having a furniture and mattress “presale event” for a sale that supposedly starts Jan. 31, but has sale prices that take effect today. As part of this sale, JCPenney has mattresses discounted for 50 percent to 65 percent off, as well as 30 to 50 percent off entire stock of furniture, and an extra 10 percent off those sale prices on select items.

In a separate sale that started earlier this week and ends today, JCPenney has Arizona jeans for $14.99 to $19.99, home deals of 40 percent to 60 percent off and clearance items storewide of up to 75 percent off.

For the home, Kohl’s has 50 percent to 60 percent off accent and kitchen rugs.

Also, Kohl’s is still running its “final clearance” sale, offering up to 80 percent off storewide.

Which store has the best customer service?

Last week, the National Retail Federation published its fifth annual survey of retailers that offer the best customer service.

The survey, which polled 8,600 consumers, was conducted by consumer marketing intelligence firm BIGresearch in September.

Consumers were asked the open ended question: “Thinking of all the different retail formats (store, catalog, Internet or home shopping), which retailer delivers the best customer service?”

Turns out, for the third straight year, L.L. Bean was the answer for the most.

Here are the top 10:

  1. L.L.Bean

  2. Overstock.com

  3. Zappos.com

  4. Amazon.com

  5. QVC

  6. Coldwater Creek

  7. HSN

  8. Lands’ End

  9. JCPenney

  10. Kohl’s, and Nordstrom (tied)

For the complete list, see the NRF site.

I would have had Kohl’s higher and Walmart lower (it came in at 27th), and I would have put Office Depot and Dorothy Lane Market in there somewhere, but other than that I have no qualms.

What about you?

What area retailer or e-tailer do you think has the best customer service?(poll)

Pins found in pot pies, recall issued

It was reported Wednesday, Jan. 20, that pot pies sold as school fundraisers in 15 states — including Ohio — were recalled after straight pins were found inside one of them.

Wallet Pop noted the recall of the Park 100 Foods product, which was being sold by the fundraising firm Market Day.

Multiple Dayton-area schools use Market Day fundraisers, although it is not clear whether area schools sold these pot pies.

If your school was selling the pot pies, comment below to help others learn of the risk.

The Market Day representative said the organization is contacting affected schools regarding the recall.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture deemed the health risk “high” for this Class I recall.

The pot pies were sold through Dec. 30.

For more information, visit the USDA site or call Market Day at (877) 632-7753 or Park 100’s Corporate Director of Quality Jim Fish at (317) 853-4280.

635,000 drop-side, non-drop-side cribs recalled

Tuesday, Jan. 19, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the recall of about 635,000 cribs made by Dorel Asia, due to the suffocation and strangulation hazards they pose to infants and toddlers.

dorel.jpg
This Vintage Estate 3-1 Crib, Cherry Model, is among the recalled cribs.

The recall involves both drop-side and non-drop-side cribs.

The CPSC and Dorel Asia have received dozens of reports regarding malfunctions with these cribs, including one of a 6-month-old who became entrapped and strangled in a crib after the drop side hardware broke.

The cribs were sold at Kmart, Sears and Walmart from January 2005 through December 2009 for between $120 and $700.

For model numbers of the recalled cribs and more information, visit the CPSC site.

Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled cribs until replacement kits are obtained and installed.

Log on to www.dorel-asia.com to order the free replacement kit. The repair kits will be provided to owners within the next several weeks.

For more information, call (866) 762-2304 or visit www.dorel-asia.com.

The CPSC also reminded parents not to use any crib with missing, broken, or loose parts, and to make sure to tighten hardware from time to time to keep the crib sturdy.

“When using a drop-side crib, parents should check to make sure the drop side or any other moving part operates smoothly. Always check all sides and corners of the crib for disengagement. Disengagements can create a gap and entrap a child. In addition, do not try to repair any side of the crib, especially with duct tape, wire or rope.”

60 healthy foods, recipes for cheap

One of the complaints about eating healthier is that healthy food is more expensive.

For example, having fresh fish for dinner is decidedly more expensive than mixing up a box of macaroni and cheese.

However, there are plenty of good, nutritious foods that can be found at a low cost.

Toward that end, the reliable Coupon Sherpa has assembled a list of 60 healthy foods for pennies per serving.

The site also notes some of the benefits of these foods, and includes a great recipe for each item.

The foods include eggs, apples, bananas, coffee, sardines, yogurt, chicken gizzards and many more.

Tax return schemes can be costly

Ohio Attorney General Richard Cordray warned consumers today, Jan. 19, that some of those “fast cash refunds” or “instant refunds” can actually be high-interest loans.

“Commonly referred to as refund anticipation loans or RALs, these products sound good but can be very costly,” Cordray’s office said in a press release. “The loans are provided by companies based on a consumer’s expected tax return. The companies then charge filing fees, tax preparation fees and interest that can eat up 25 percent of a consumer’s tax refund.”

Also, “if the tax refund winds up smaller than anticipated, the consumer will have to pay the difference in addition to the fees.”

Cordray advised people to read the fine print and research other options.

He recommended that consumers file their own tax returns electronically for free and have the refund directly deposited in a bank account, reminding Ohioans that they may be eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit and can get free help in filing tax returns if they make about $49,000 or less.

Also, check out the Free File function on the IRS Web site.

Cordray noted that the average turnaround time is two weeks for refunds.

Consumers should report unfair or deceptive practices they encounter by filing a consumer complaint at (800) 282-0515 or www.OhioAttorneyGeneral.gov/ConsumerComplaint.

These practices could include:

— Advertising RALs but failing to clearly disclose that they are loans, not early refunds.

— Failing to explain that when a consumer takes out a RAL, the IRS will send the tax refund to the RAL provider, not to the consumer.

— In advertisements, failing to make clear that by taking out a RAL, the taxpayer is borrowing against the expected refund, not obtaining the refund itself.

— Failing to inform consumers that RALs are interest-bearing loans and not a quicker way to receive their refunds from the IRS.

— Charging fees as a percentage rather than as a flat rate.

— Failing to advise consumers that they may be liable to the lender for additional payment, interest and other fees (as applicable through the RAL) if the refund is delayed or is smaller than anticipated.

— Failing to advise consumers of all the fees that will be deducted from their refund.

Big sales this week on clothes, office furniture, items for home

There are multiple sales going on this week at area stores; some in honor of the long weekend honoring Martin Luther King Jr. and others just because.

Here are some of the deals that stand out this week:

polaroidcamcorder.jpg
Polaroid Camcorders are on sale this week at Target. Photo from latestcooltechgadgets.com.

Kohl’s is having a Baby Sale, for anyone who has a baby (or a baby shower) in their near future, reporting “everything for baby” on big discount in true Kohl’s fashion.

Kohl’s also has 30 percent to 60 percent off bedding ensembles.

Elder-Beerman is having Cabin Fever Specials, marking down 50 percent to 70 percent throughout the store, and Kroger Marketplace is having a Home White Sale.

Sears has up to 70 percent off clearance items, and 50 percent off intimate apparel and accessories.

This also is the final day of Macy’s Super Weekend Sale and Clearance, with savings storewide up to 85 percent off.

Target is having a Great Save Event, with a variety of items on sale. Select rice cookers, toaster ovens and George Foreman Grills are $23.

Also at Target, the Polaroid Camcorder (which looks a lot like a Flip camera, complete with USB port) is just $49.99.

Office Max and Office Depot are both having office furniture sales, with Office Max marking down desk chairs up to 50 percent, and Office Depot cornering the deals market on desks, with savings of $50 to $179.99.

Office Depot also has 2010 Toshiba laptops for $100 to $170 off.

Staples also has PC discounts, with savings up to $180.

Michaels is having a Dollar Days sale, with ribbon, fake flowers, marbles, wood frames and more for just $1.

Hancock Fabrics is having a Martin Luther King Jr. Day sale through today, with 50 percent off pillow forms, foam cushions and decorator fabrics, among others.

Big Lots is having an “incredible book buyout,” with hardcover cookbooks for $5 and other hardcover books for $3.

Walgreens has select Valentine’s Day bags of candy, including Reese’s Cups and Hershey’s Kisses, two for $4, and Ty Hershey’s Beanie Babies for $3.99. (And I thought all the Webkinz had killed off the Beanie Babies.)

HHgregg has 20 percent off TVs, mattresses, camcorders, audio and more this week.

There are a few stores that have appliances on sale this week as well, including Sears, HHgregg and Best Buy.

But, as I have mentioned before, it might be best to wait to buy an appliance until the Cash for Appliances program is in play in Ohio, which should be in the next couple months. That rebate program could get you savings on top of whatever sales are taking place.

Best Buy also has TVs on sale this week.

Best deals ahead for 2010 by month, day

Something is always on sale, which is one of the more tangible benefits of our free-enterprise economy.

But, as we all know, the best sales can be elusive. So, it helps to know retailers’ sales cycles and which times of year historically offer the best deals.

To help plan for the shopping year ahead, here is a look at what is most likely to be on sale and what bargains the months and days ahead have in store.

Sales by month

January is a great month to shop. Early in the month, there are big after-Christmas sales and New Year’s Day sales, and around the third week of the month, many stores start clearing out their previous year’s inventories.

For example, Target often has big sales on toys in mid- to late January, with discounts of up to 75 percent. These unadvertised sales often vary greatly by individual stores and their inventories.

Other items that are often on sale in January are:

Wrapping paper and Christmas leftovers (early in the month)

Furniture

Home appliances and cookware

Bed and bath linens

Rugs

Sports/exercise equipment

Computers and other electronics

Organizers, shelving, filing cabinets

Winter clothes and accessories

February has Valentine’s Day sales on candy, jewelry and perfume, and Presidents Day sales that are good for general discounts.

February also is one of the best months to get a gym membership, since it is when all the good-intentioned folks who started in January tend to drop off.

Other items known to be on sale this month include:

Electronics

Floor coverings

Housewares

Furniture

March is loosely known as frozen-food month, and you will find stores with related deals. March also is when spring-cleaning deals begin, and spring clothes sales start appearing at area stores.

Other items known to be on sale this month include:

Air conditioners

Paper products

Wedding gifts

Washers and dryers

Garden supplies

Outdoor winter sports gear

Luggage

China

April is all about Easter (at least in this calendar year), spring and brides, and the sales fall into line with those.

Other items that will be on sale include:

Spring clothing

Yard and garden supplies

Wedding gowns

Furniture

Cruises

European vacations

Paint and wallpaper

May is Mom’s month, and therefore flower shops and stores selling kitchenware discount their prices to win your beloved dollars. Near the end of the month, Memorial Day helps move more general merchandise.

May is a good month to shop, because it has some of the better sales leftover from April, and because summer sales are starting to heat up.

Here are some other items often on sale this month:

Silver

Watches

Athletic clothing and shoes

Linens and towels

Wedding gowns

Furniture

Cruises

European vacations

Home maintenance items

Paper goods

Cleaning supplies

Auto maintenance

Home maintenance

Picnic food and gear

Insect repellents

Sunscreen

June is for dads, with retailers offering hardware, men’s cologne and fishing and camping gear for less.

Other items known to be on sale in June are:

Summer items

Storm windows

Summer clothing

Televisions

Building materials

Pianos

Hardware

Dairy products

July has summer squarely in hand, and many of its sales items are designed to get you out in the sunshine (sports equipment) and cool you off (air conditioners).

The Fourth of July offers an all-American opportunity for general sales, and July also is the month in which school supply sales start popping up, much to kids’ dismay.

Here are some other items on sale in July:

Back-to-school clothes

Sports equipment

Furniture

Sportswear

Craft supplies

Picnic food and gear

August is when school supply stores start competing for your business, and when summer clothes start getting more heavily discounted.

Bigger summer toys, such as swimming pools and playground equipment, often go on sale because they take up a great deal of space and retailers want to start making room for holiday inventory.

Here are some other things on sale:

Back-to-school clothes

Bathing suits and sandals

Spring and summer clothes

Linens and towels

Lawn and garden equipment

BBQ and patio equipment

Fresh fish and vegetables

Breakfast foods

Cold lunch items for lunch boxes

September is when school’s in session and we all start warming to the idea of colder weather. Winter gear starts to go on sale (although the best deals are in December and January), and school supplies can be found for cheap.

September also is supposed to be a great month to buy a car, since it is when many dealers are clearing out that model year. Weekday mornings in September are the optimum car shopping time.

Labor Day sales are good for myriad items, but also offer discounts on outdoor grills and furniture.

Other items to buy in September are:

Summer clothes

Bicycles

Housewares

Back-to-school clothes

Gardening supplies

Housewares

Bicycles

Canned goods

October’s big sale is on the weekend before Columbus Day. Also, right before and after Halloween, there are opportunities to get candy and costumes for cheap.

October also is when retailers start to get into the holiday spirit, and you may find some related early-bird sales.

Other good buys in October are:

Shrubs, trees and plants

Fishing equipment

Houses (anytime in fall is best)

Crystal

Silver

Glassware

Cars (last year’s model)

Houses

Baking/candy-making items

November is when the competition starts heating up for your holiday cash. Last year in November, toy and hardcover book discounts became hot and heavy among Walmart, Target, Toys R Us, Amazon.com and Meijer.

Right before and right after Thanksgiving can provide some savings on fall decor and holiday food.

Toward the end of the month, of course, you have Black Friday, in which stores can discount an array of items drastically. With any luck, in 2010, retailers will be more willing to stock more doorbuster items.

Other items good to purchase in November are:

Houses

Quilts and blankets

Space heaters

Select winter clothing

Canned goods

Baking goods

Gift sets

December is the best month to shop overall, thanks to the holidays. Everything from clothes to electronics to toys to TVs to food is discounted in December.

According to the National Retail Federation, for many retailers, the holiday season can represent anywhere between 25 percent and 40 percent of annual sales, so they do what they can to draw you in.

Here are some other good buys this month:

Wine and champagne

Wedding dresses

Deals by day

What about the days of the week?

Here are some items that are good to buy depending on the day of the week:

Sundays: Groceries. New sales cycles predominantly begin on Sundays, although Kroger’s usually start on Mondays.

Mondays: Cars. Most sales happen on weekends, which is when most people have time to look. There is less foot traffic on Mondays and dealers may be more willing to deal. Also, shoot for a Monday near the end of the month when quotas need to be met.

Tuesdays: Gas. Actually, early morning or late at night from Monday through Thursday are the best times to buy gas. Stations often raise the cost during the day.

Wednesdays: Airline tickets. Airfare sales often occur early in the week, and increases tend to occur toward the end of the week. Also, it is good to book 21 days before your flight.

Thursdays: Clothes. Many weekend sales have begun, but everything available is on the floor.

Fridays: Check out Amazon.com. Each Friday the online retailer has a Friday sale, which discounts items up to 80 percent off.

Saturdays: Saturdays are good days to shop at the mall, since the stores often start new sales on Sundays and want to clear out that specific inventory before the next weekly cycle begins.

BOGO sale at Rite Aid ends today; store offering big prizes in Game of Life

Rite Aid has been running a sale this week, offering multiple buy one, get one free deals on everything from medicine to makeup to deodorant to candy.

Those deals end today, Jan. 16.

Also at Rite Aid through February, the store is holding a contest called The Game of Life, and is giving away up to $5 million in prizes.

How it works is you get game tickets every time you shop at Rite Aid, and bonus game tickets when you buy certain items.

Then, kind of like the Monopoly Game McDonald’s sometimes runs, you paste your tickets on the Game of Life game board to try to win prizes. There also are instant prizes available.

The prizes include everything from a Rite Aid Gift Card to $250,000 toward your home mortgage.

If you shop at Rite Aid, it could be a win-WIN.

Of note as well: Online purchases do not apply to this game.

Get the scoop on this year’s Girl Scout cookies; which is your favorite?

What would winter be without Girl Scout cookies?

Fortunately, most of us have never had to answer that question.

Friendly neighborhood Girl Scouts have been fundraising with these delicious treats for more than 80 years. The first nationally franchised Girl Scout cookie sale was in 1936.

There have been some changes along the way — in cookie names, packaging, bakers, price and in cookies being sold — but the integrity, ambition and appeal of the cookie sales have remained constant.

What is your favorite Girl Scout cookie?(surveys)

About the cookies

“We always sell eight (varieties of) cookies,” said Ann MacDonald, communications manager of Girl Scouts of Western Ohio. “The size and recipe of the cookies have not changed in the last year, although the price is now $3.50 (up from $3).”

MacDonald cited the increase in production and transportation costs for the bump in price.

When asked whether the recession had impacted their sales, she said: “The preorder sales are a tad down, but the cookie booth sales are up, so it has pretty much evened out.”

As for questions about the cookies themselves, the newspaper enlisted 11 very willing taste-testers (some adults, some kids) to sample the specific varieties available this year.

(To vote for your favorite, scroll down in this post.)

Our tasters noted their favorites and rated each cookie on a scale of 1 to 5 (with 5 being the best).

Here are their findings, as well as other details about the cookies:

Caramel deLites: These cookies, once known as Samoas, are described by the Girl Scouts “as vanilla cookies drenched in caramel, sprinkled with toasted coconut and laced with cocoa stripes.”

These were a top choice among our taste-testers overall, although the coconut can make or break one’s opinion of the cookie.

As Brian put it, “Great mix of tastes. I love coconut, so these are a slam dunk (in milk).”

Rating: Three testers chose this as their favorite cookie, and it was in a three-way tie with Thin Mints and Peanut Butter Sandwiches for tops in the voting, averaging 3.8.

Peanut Butter Patties: The cookie formerly known as the Tagalong is described as “crispy vanilla cookies layered with real peanut butter and blanketed with chocolatey coating.”

Our taste-testers had little negative to say about this choice.

As MB summed it up: “I’m pretty sure there’s a Peanut Butter Patty Fan Club — if there isn’t, there should be! Addictive!”

Rating: Another three testers selected this as tops overall, but it averaged just 3.3 in the ratings.

Shortbreads: These old-fashioned favorites, once known as Trefoils, are described as “a traditional favorite with a buttery, light flavor.”

Opinions on this cookie ranged from Mark’s “dry and less flavorful than the previous version that had granulated sugar on top,” to Lou’s “a classic I could eat all day.”

Miles added: “Don’t underestimate it.”

Rating: No one on the panel picked the Shortbread as their favorite, and it averaged 3.3.

Thin Mints: These “thin chocolate wafers dipped in a rich chocolatey coating with a burst of pure peppermint” are reportedly one of the most popular cookies sold in the U.S., second only to Oreos.

That popularity was mostly matched among our taste-testers.

Carol put it succinctly when she said: “Still great. There is really nothing like it in a non-Scout cookie.”

Rating: This cookie only topped the list of one taster, but averaged 3.8 in the ratings.

Peanut Butter Sandwiches: Once known as Do-si-dos, these cookies are described as “smooth peanut butter sandwiched between crunchy oatmeal cookies.”

Although only one tester chose this as his favorite cookie, it got good grades from the group as a whole.

As Ozzie said: “Maybe I just like peanut butter a lot, but this one was very tasty, with a satisfying crunchiness.”

But the crunch was off-putting for others.

“They remind me of vending machine peanut butter crackers,” Melissa said. “Hard cookies.”

Rating: One vote for favorite, but it averaged 3.8 in the ratings.

Thanks-A-Lot: These more recent additions to the Girl Scout mix, and are a descendant of the All-Abouts. They are described as “shortbread cookies dipped in rich fudge and topped with an embossed thank you message in one of five languages.”

The scores of this cookie were greatly helped by the kids on our panel, as well one of the youngest adults.

After trying the Thanks-A-Lot, Kyle said: “No, thank you, Girl Scouts of America.”

Rating: One picked it as a favorite, and it averaged 3.6 in the voting.

Lemonades: Even newer than the Thanks-A-Lot is the Lemonade. It is described as “savory slices of shortbread with a refreshingly tangy lemon icing.”

While some welcomed the “lemony sunshine,” others called it “sickly sweet.”

Rating: It was the favorite of two tasters, and averaged 3.4 in voting.

Daisy Go Rounds: The newest cookie in the bunch, the Daisy Go Round was introduced last year. It is the latest reduced-fat option.

It is described as “crispy cinnamon flowers blooming with flavor in every bite.”

Unfortunately, most of our testers might prefer eating actual daisies.

Carol said: “Horrible; I’d rather not have a cookie.”

Ben added, “Not interested! Daisy Go Away!”

Rating: No one picked this cookie as their favorite, and it scored far worse than any of the others at 2.0. However, it is good to remember that it is a low-fat cookie competing against more decadent versions.

About the Scouts

For this year’s cookie sales and fundraising drive, the Girl Scouts of the USA adopted a new theme: “Every Cookie Has a Mission.”

MacDonald said the theme reflects the drive to help girls do great things.

“Girl Scouts provides leadership experience for girls, so they can learn and grow into great human beings,” she said.

The cookie sale is part of this mission in that it raises money for the troops to take part in camps, trips and other educational opportunities, she said.

The Girl Scouts note that all proceeds from cookie sales stay in the local community. The sales also provide lessons in responsibility and community service.

“The focus (of the sales) is really for girls to learn communication skills, and have one-on-one contact with people,” she said.

This is the reason for the sales not being held online.

“We encourage people to order through families, or girls at their church, temple, mosque, (etc.),” MacDonald added.

How to get cookies

Preorders are under way from individual Girl Scouts through Jan. 26.

After that, from Feb. 19 through March 21, there will be cookie booth sales at a variety of businesses, including many area Kroger stores, according to MacDonald.

For more information on where and when to get your cookies, visit www.girlscoutcookies.org.

Enter your ZIP code on that site, and you will be contacted about a troop to buy from near you.

For more information, customers also can call (800) 233-4845 or (800) 537-6241.

Tylenol, Motrin, Benadryl recalled due to “moldy” smell

CNN Money is reporting today, Jan. 15, that some Tylenol, Motrin and Benadryl products have been recalled after there were complaints of an “unusual moldy, musty or mildew-like” odor.

The maker of these products, McNeil-PPC (a division of Johnson and Johnson), reported that “in a small number of cases, (this odor) was associated with temporary and non-serious gastrointestinal events. These include nausea, stomach pain, vomiting, or diarrhea.”

There was a similar recall late last month on Tylenol Arthritis Caplets.

The smell has been attributed to a chemical that is applied to wooden pallets used to transport and store packaging materials.

The recalled products include:

Junior strength Motrin

Children’s Tylenol grape meltaway tablets

Extra strength Tylenol

Extra strength Tylenol rapid release gelcap

Extra strength Tylenol PM geltab

Motrin caplets

Extra strength Rolaids fresh mint tablets

St. Joseph Aspirin chewable orange tablets

Consumers are advised to check their medication to see if it is one of the recalled lots. The lot number should be on the side of the bottle.

If your medication has been recalled, contact McNeil Consumer Health care for a refund or replacement at (888) 222-6036 or www.mcneilproductrecall.com.

Consumers with medical concerns should contact their health-care provider.

Changes for Toll House cookie dough after more E.coli found

Nestle Toll House Cookie Dough has hit another bump in the food safety road, but the company is responding to it and as a result is changing the way it makes the dough.

dough.jpg
Recipe changing

After finding another sample of Nestle Toll House Cookie Dough contaminated with E.coli, Nestle has decided to shut down it cookie dough production for a few weeks as it transitions to using heat-treated flour.

None of that contaminated dough left the factory, so there is no recall being issued.

Unfortunately, that was not the case in June, when more than 70 people in 31 states became sick after eating the dough raw.

After the June incident, as noted by Consumer Reports, “Nestle recalled all its prepackaged refrigerated dough, shut down the plant, and turned to new sources for its main ingredients. It also put new testing protocols in place, which is how the current E coli-tainted samples were found.”

Nestle noted that during this transition to using the new ingredient, consumers may notice some shortages on store shelves. The new batch of dough should be out in March.

So if you love the old stuff, you might want to run out and get some before they run out.

Nestle also reminded people that cookie dough should not be eaten raw.

For more information, call Nestle (800) 559-5025.

Margaritas and pint drafts for $1.99 today, Saturday

Tumbleweed Southwest Grill has had its daily specials for a while, but the restaurant has refreshed its offerings of late.

On Fridays and Saturdays, for a limited time, Tumbleweed is offering margaritas and pint drafts for $1.99.

There are better deals on those drinks during the week at Tumbleweed, with 99 cent Margarita Mondays and 99 cent domestic drafts on Thirsty Thursdays, but having them both discounted and on the weekend makes for a more enjoyable (and likely) date night.

There are Tumbleweed restaurants north and south of Dayton, at 9190 N. Main St. in Englewood, (937-836-6057) and 2030 E. Dorthy Lane in Kettering (937-395-0419).

Pier 1 tea lights, light holders can catch fire

It’s never good when unintended parts of a candle or a candle holder are flammable.

tealights.jpg
This glitter can get really sparkly.

Unfortunately, that is the case with a couple of products that were sold at Pier 1 Imports in 2009.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission today, Jan. 14, recalled Pier 1’s Silver Glitter Tea Lights and Gold Glitter Tea Lights and Ceramic Santa Tea Light Holders, because both pose fire hazards.

In the case off the tea lights, or little candles, the flame can ignite the glitter inside and create little balls of fire. The flame from the tea light also can ignite the Santa tea light holder.

These products were each sold for about $10.

For more information on these products or how to get a refund, call (800) 245-4595 or visit www.pier1.com.

Netflix to be streamed through Wii

All the cool video game consoles are doing it.

As of this week, Wii has joined PlayStation 3 and Xbox in their ability to stream Netflix videos to your TV screen. The service should be available this spring.

CNBC noted that the move is a win for Netflix and a win for Wii. It greatly increases the number of people who can use Netflix’s service for $9 a month, and helps make the video game consoles more in demand.

And, most importantly for our concerns, it should be a win for the consumer as well in that it provides yet another movie-watching option.

FBI warns of Haiti donation scams

Like with other high-profile disasters before it, the tragedy in Haiti has brought out the best in some people and the worst in others.

As for the latter group, CNN had an article Wednesday, Jan. 13, noting that the FBI is advising people to “be very skeptical of any unsolicited appeals (for aid to Haiti) they receive or find on the Internet.”

To this end, CNN is directing readers to its list of legitimate organizations providing aid for the victims of Tuesday’s earthquake. Here is that list.

The news group also listed general tips from the FBI, Scam.Busters and the Better Business Bureau to help make sure your donations go where you want them to go.

Also today, Ohio Attorney General Richard Cordray reminded people who wish to text donations that standard texting fees may apply.

“Some wireless carriers have indicated that text messaging rates will be waived for donations made for certain earthquake relief efforts,” Cordray said.

“Others are even willing to match some donations. But consumers can’t know if this applies to them personally unless they ask questions before giving.”

Slap Chop? PedEgg? What infomercial products are worth your late-night cash?

Consumer Reports had an awesome article in the February issue, discussing 15 items being sold on infomercials and how they perform.

The magazine’s reviews are especially helpful with these products because when we usually see them advertised, we may not be at the peak of our decision-making ability.

I know for myself, sitting in the dark on my couch in the wee hours, I have considered bundt pans and dicers that I would never consider buying in a store.

But they are right there, only a phone call away, and the sales people seem convinced they can make my life easier. And, wait! You can get a second one for free if you act now!

For those of you who have considered similar purchases, here are a few of CR’s more notable reviews for these “enticing” products.

Slap Chop: This slicer and dicer is one I almost bought the other day, despite the annoying sales guy. But CR noted many negatives, including chopping unevenly, harder foods getting trapped in the blades, splash guards getting misaligned and the fact that lots of slapping the plastic top can get your hand pretty sore.

Snuggie: Although this has become a popular item on infomercials and in stores, CR staffers were underwhelmed. Many found it tough to walk in and noted that it sheds in the wash. “After 10 cycles, the fabric had bare spots between pills and clumps.”

ShamWow: The $19.95 towel advertises that it soaks up “20 times its weight in liquid,” but CR found it only held around half of that. Testers were unimpressed by that claim, although they it can do well on motor oil and for drying a dog.

PedEgg: This callous and dead-skin fighting foot file is worth the cost (about $10) according to the CR team. They note it did better overall than a pumice stone. They do recommend using it over a waste basket, since some filings escaped.

For the complete story on these products and many more (including Magic Jack, Ab Circle Pro and Debbie Meyer Green Bags), pick up the magazine (which is out now) or subscribe online.

Free software for Facebook users

USAToday.com noted this week that Computer-security giant McAfee and Facebook have teamed up to provide free Internet Security Suite software to millions.

The software offers PCs protection from viruses, spyware and other online threats.

For Facebook users, of which there are 350 million, who sign up to be a fan of McAfee on Facebook, McAfee will give a six-month subscription of the software.

After those first six months, Facebook users will be eligible for a discounted subscription.

Another security software (as noted by tbill below), AVG, is consistently free.

Another freebie to be gained online is training on Microsoft Office software products.

The More With Less Today site reported that Microsoft offers a host of 2007 and 2003 classes for free on its site.

Fashion, home improvement sales start

JCPenney started a weeklong sale today, Jan. 14, called “Style Stock Up,” offering guys’ tops and jeans from Arizona (brand) for 50 percent off, select women’s clothes up to 50 percent off and half off Simply Sports apparel and sheets.

There also is a storewide clearance of 70 percent off select items in every department. And online there is 50 percent off furniture and mattresses.

Lowe’s and The Home Depot are both offering home improvement deals today through Monday for Lowe’s and through Wednesday for Home Depot.

Lowe’s has lowered the price on select fixtures, insulation and more, and has snow blowers and seasonal heat on sale.

Lowe’s also has a good online feature that allows you to place an order on Lowes.com, select In-Store Pickup and have your order ready at the store in 30 minutes.

Home Depot’s sale features paint, products for the bathroom, and discounts on kitchen cabinets and overall remodeling.

Both home improvement stores also have sales on appliances, but if you are going to upgrade to energy-efficient models, you might wait a month or so to try to get in on the Cash for Appliances project.

Those Ohio rebates aren’t available yet, (and they aren’t retroactive), but will be soon. As soon as they are, I will let you know on this blog and in the paper.

Big Crocs sale online, winter clearance at outlet mall

Crocs is having a good sale online right now, offering many of its clearance shoes for buy one, get one free.

In addition to that deal, many of the shoes are discount to start with as well.

Thanks to Wallet Pop for spotting that deal.

The mention of Crocs reminded me that the Cincinnati Premium Outlets Mall in Monroe, which has a Crocs store, also is having a Winter Clearance Sale.

Although the Crocs store isn’t having additional discounts for this sale (at least as noted in their release), many other stores are, including Calvin Klein, PacSun and Nike.

The Jeffersonville outlet mall also has great deals right now, including printable coupons on its site.

2009 had record consumer complaints

Attorney General Richard Cordray released his office’s consumer complaint numbers today, Jan. 12, indicating that 2009 had a historically high number of consumer complaints in Ohio.

And these are just the complaints his office heard about.

The AG’s office received 30,259 complaints in 2009, which was a 20 percent increase from 2008.

The results were published in the 2009 Consumer Annual Report.

“Last year was extremely challenging financially for many Ohioans,” Cordray said. “We’re counting our pennies and weighing each purchase. There is no tolerance for companies that fail to deliver on their promises. Ohio consumers have had enough, and we’re seeing them speak out in numbers we haven’t seen in the past.”

Through the office’s complaint resolution process and legal action, the office noted, approximately $7 million in consumer restitution, civil penalties, costs and other relief was generated in 2009.

But what was everyone complaining about?

According to the report, the year’s top 10 complaints concerned:

Motorized vehicles (buying a car, auto repair services, receiving titles from dealers)

Collections, credit reporting and financial services (wrong information on credit reports, credit repair services, collection calls for debts not owed)

Household goods and property improvement (roofing, driveway repair, general contractors)

Internet and phone

Shopping, food and beverages

Mortgage (lenders, servicers, foreclosure rescue companies)

Beavercreek woman finds new career in bargain-hunting

Since losing her last job in October, Sharon Shackleford has not been sitting around waiting to be rehired.

The 46-year-old has been cultivating the myriad bargain-hunting skills she learned growing up and is now sharing her skills with others.

“I’ve always been budget-conscious,” Shackleford said. “I am one one of four sisters. My mom and dad divorced when I was 12, and I saw some of the struggles (my mom) went through.”

Shackleford, who lives in Beavercreek with her husband, worked for NCR in project management, at Standard Register as a report analyst and finally at New Page as a human resource information specialist.

Due to a reorganization of the business, Shackleford was laid off from New Page in October.

At the same time, her husband had retired from Delphi and started his own house-painting business.

“Thank goodness I had put back a little money and had gotten into the habit of shopping (at bargain places),” she said. “I still buy impulse things at times, but I still think about it before I buy it.”

For Christmas, Shackleford shopped Black Friday sales and made many items for friends and relatives.

She also built on her bargain-hunting abilities.

“Some people get into a funk (when they get laid off),” she said. “They think their jobs make them who they are. I go to church every week, and try to get out with people. As a result, I have been able to remain positive.”

Between her attitude and her instincts, Shackleford said the couple has been able to maintain their standard of living.

“Even if you save,” she said, “your bills are going to be (in line with) what you used to make.”

Therefore, she added, you have to find other ways to save.

During this time, Shackleford also started sharing her money-saving tips with others; alerting people to tips on restaurant deals, Disney ticket finds and other coupon strategies via Facebook and word-of-mouth.

“I love finding the best bargains out there that I can possibly find,” she said.

Ultimately, she said, she would like to use her skills to become a personal shopper.

“Getting back to basics is always good,” Shackleford said.

Children’s book recalled due to lead

It is rare that books are recalled for lead exposure, but at least one is bucking the trend.

bigrex.jpg
“Big Rex” has big problems

More than 200,000 “Big Rex and Friends” cloth books have been recalled due to a risk of lead exposure, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.

The books, which were imported by St. Martin’s Press LLC, have a red plastic dot sewn in the book contains the high levels of lead.

As it is well-known these days, lead is toxic if ingested by young children and can cause adverse health effects.

The books were sold at Barnes & Noble, Toys R Us, Amazon.com, Borders and other bookstores and retailers nationwide from May 2004 through October 2009 for about $9.

Consumers are advised to take the books from kids.

Big sale on activewear now at Old Navy

If you were watching any of the football games Sunday, Jan. 10, you probably saw several commercials about the current Old Navy sale on Goga pants.

yoga pants.jpg
These yoga pants from Old Navy are reportedly similar to the store’s promotion on Goga pants. All yoga and Goga pants for adults are on sale for $12 through Jan. 21 at Old Navy.

According to that ad, these yoga-style pants make your derriere look like it has been working out — even if it hasn’t, so much.

I don’t know if these pants really work … do you? (A rep from Old Navy said she thought they were pretty similar to yoga pants, but it could all depend on the person.)

If you haven’t tried them but want to or if you like them and want more, now is a great time to pick some up.

Right now at Old Navy, Goga pants are on sale for $12 for adults and $7 for kids.

The sale is part of Old Navy’s big sale right now on activewear, selling all related items for less than $30.

In this sale, sports bras also are $12, graphic tees will be $10 and jackets will be priced from $15 to $20.

Win $2,010 from Coke in 2010

Wallet Pop noted a contest being offered by Coca-Cola today, Jan. 11, that can net you a refreshing $2,010.

It really has little to do with the beverage, it seems, offering a $2,010 Visa gift card or one of three $250 Visa cash cards as prizes for merely registering with the site. No purchase is necessary.

Wallet Pop notes you can enter once a day through Jan. 25.

Of course, the contest asks for your e-mail address and mailing address when you register, as is the usual exchange.

And, for you true Coke fans, the contest offers the opportunity to get a Coca-Cola newsletter each month.

Dealzon spotlighted the deal that is running on Amazon, marking down the five seasons from $199.98 to $87.99, for a savings of $111.99. There also is free shipping available.

The best source for tax information is on the Internal Revenue Service Web site at www.irs.gov.

Not only is it comprehensive, but it’s also free.

Eric Erickson of IRS media relations for Ohio and West Virginia recommends reading Publication 17 on the site, which provides a general overview of the tax filing process.

“It is a catch-all publication,” he said.

Another publication on the site, No. 910, is the IRS Guide to Free Tax Services. Among those services is Free File, which allows individuals to file for free if they qualify. Check the IRS site for more details.

Erickson noted that, as of Friday, Jan. 15, people can start filing their 2009 taxes online. The IRS has toll-free customer service lines that will answer tax questions for free.

For individuals, call (800) 829-1040, and for business-related tax issues, call (800) 829-4933.

Tips for choosing a tax preparer

If you need more help than a Web site or phone call can provide, there are software and tax preparers to consider.

However, since your finances are at stake, make sure you choose wisely.

IRS Commissioner Doug Shulman said in a statement last week that, because more than 80 percent of Americans use a tax preparer or software to complete their tax returns, the IRS is recommending new rules to boost standards.

“It’s critical to taxpayers and it’s also critical to the revenues of the country,” Shulman said in a briefing.

Toward that end, the IRS also released these eight tips to help identify a good tax preparer and to avoid related issues with your return:

  1. Check qualifications. Ask if the preparer is affiliated with a professional organization that provides its members with continuing education and resources, and holds them to a code of ethics.

  2. Check on the preparer’s history with the Better Business Bureau, the state’s board of accountancy for CPAs or the Ohio bar association for attorneys.

  3. Find out about their service fees. Avoid preparers that base their fee on a percentage of the amount of your refund or those who claim they can obtain larger refunds than other preparers.

  4. Make sure the tax preparer is accessible. Make sure you will be able to contact the tax preparer after the return has been filed, even after April 15, in case questions arise. Consider whether the individual or firm will be around months, or even years, after the return has been filed.

  5. Provide all records and receipts needed to prepare your return. Most reputable preparers will request to see your records and receipts and will ask you multiple questions to determine your total income and your qualifications for expenses, deductions and other items.

  6. Never sign a blank return. And avoid tax preparers that ask you to sign a blank tax form.

  7. Review the entire return before signing it. Before you sign your tax return, review it and ask questions. Make sure you understand everything and are comfortable with the accuracy of the return before you sign it.

  8. Make sure the preparer signs the form. A paid preparer must sign the return as required by law. Although the preparer signs the return, you are responsible for the accuracy of every item on your return. The preparer must also give you a copy.

This week’s big sales

Speaking of tax preparation options, Office Max, Office Depot and Staples have sales on related software when you buy TurboTax or H&R Block software. Their prices on the actual tax software are the same between the stores.

For the best price on TurboTax software alone, visit TurboTax.com.

Office Max also is having a sale on furniture, marking down desk chairs, desks and metal file cabinets up to 50 percent off.

Some area stores are having short sales with big savings that end today.

My favorite overall of these is the sale at JCPenney. There are many items for 60 percent off and clearance items for 70 percent off. Guys’ fleece hoodies are 70 percent off and toddlers’ Okie Dokie fleece tops and bottoms are 60 percent off. There also are juniors’ T-shirts for $3.99.

JCPenney also is having a Stock-up White Sale, with 50 percent to 60 percent off all towels, blankets and throws (excluding Snuggies), and sheets. There also is 40 percent to 50 percent off small appliances, cookware, floor care and more.

Kohl’s is finishing up a three-day sale today, with many items for 50 percent off, clearance items for 60 percent to 80 percent off.

Also, if you really like Kohl’s, you can sign up for free e-mail sales alerts and get a $5 in-store coupon and a 10 percent off online coupon.

Elder-Beerman is concluding a great four-day sale today, with 50 percent to 75 percent off sale and clearance storewide. The clearance items include women’s clothes, boots, outerwear for men and women, all down comforters, and all bath and accent rugs, among others.

As for sales just starting today, Target has workout wear for $8 to $15, and 30 percent off select indoor games, scooters and bikes.

Dell is offering savings of more than $200 on select laptops, and HHgregg has big TVs on sale. At HHgregg, you can get $1,000 off Toshiba 46-inch and a 55-inch LED HDTVs. They now cost $1,299.97 and $1,999.97, respectively.

Like it did at Christmas, HHgregg also is offering its free Blu-ray player worth $200 with the purchase of a 50-inch Panasonic HDTV.

Best Buy also is going the TV sale route, and has a 55-inch Samsung LCD HDTV for $1,699, for a savings of $900.

Sears is having a home sale this week, with big savings on mattresses and all pillows for buy one, get one free.

CVS/Pharmacy, Rite Aid and Walgreens also are joining the B1G1 party. CVS has coffee, batteries, vitamins, toothpaste and more for that deal with the use of an Extra Care Bucks card.

Rite Aid has Tylenol for B1G1, as well as Valentine’s Day candy, and Walgreens has select household cleaners for the same deal.

Michaels has a winter clearance of up to 70 percent off, and both Kmart and Walmart have extra discounts during their Dollar Days.

Williams-Sonoma closeout sale

The lone area Williams-Sonoma store is closing, effective Jan. 17.

The store at The Mall at Fairfield Commons had sales of 25 percent to 75 percent off last week, although those sales may be better today, as is often the case with going-out-of-business sales.

Also, as of Thursday, the store had up to 75 percent off in their clearance section online.

Macy’s, Kohl’s, JCPenney have big clearance sales

It is that time of year, when it is literally “out with the old” at area department stores.

The good news is, that means many substantial deals for us shoppers.

Macy’s is having a supposed “one-day” sale on Saturday, Jan. 9, with a preview sale today. But the deals should be just as good today — especially in the morning.

The store is having morning specials from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.

Macy’s has coats, mattresses and casual clothes for men and women for up to 60 percent off, all flannel for 70 percent off, and dinnerware and china sets for 50 percent off.

There also is an extra 50 percent off clearance items storewide.

Kohl’s is kicking off a three-day sale, with clearance sales of up to 80 percent off. The biggest savings can be found during the power hours from 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. today and 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.

JCPenney also started a three-day sale today, with clearance items for up to 70 percent off, as well as savings for its Stock-up White Sale.

All towels, blankets and throws (excluding Snuggies), and sheets are 50 percent to 60 percent off.

Also, as noted in a Thursday post, Elder-Beerman also is in the midst of a clearance sale, with savings of 50 percent to 75 percent off.

What do select Acer notebook computers and Master Forge Five-Burner Gas Grills have in common?

It appears they both can burn you.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission issued recalls for the computer and the grills this week due to the hazards they pose.

The Acer computers reportedly have an internal microphone wire under the palm rest can short circuit and overheat.

Acer has received three reports of computers short circuiting, resulting in slight melting of the external casing, according to the CPSC.

The computers were sold at multiple retailers between June and October 2009, for between $650 and $1,150.

The gas grills supposedly have a flexible rubber hose on the LP gas tank can come into contact with burner box, causing the hose to melt and rupture when the grill is lit.

This poses a fire and burn hazard, according to the CPSC.

The firm reportedly is aware of two complaints of the hose melting and rupturing. No injuries or property damage have been reported.

Cheap combos, new happy hours at area restaurants

There are some tasty deals on food and drinks of note today, Jan. 7.

Among them:

T.G.I. Friday’s restaurants announced this week that it is bringing back its popular “3 for $12.99” dinner menu with more than 300 full-course appetizer/entree/dessert combinations.

P.F. Chang’s started a new daily happy hour this week from 3 to 6 p.m. that includes $3 to $6 appetizer and drink specials.

The $3 specials include import draft beer and 2 egg rolls.

And, at select Subway restaurants, in addition to their $5 footlong promotion, they also are offering $4 footlong subs.

All-you-can-eat pancakes back at IHOP

IHOP had this running deal when I attended school in St. Louis that offered all-you-can-eat pancakes for college students. We would go there at all hours, sometimes to study, sometimes to just hang out. But it was quite the deal for the poor college student.

ihop.jpg
Mmmm. Pancakes.

So, it always makes me happy and nostalgic to see when IHOP is running this deal again — although this deal is open to more than just college students.

DealNews explained that the deal is available to anyone at any time of day. Starting at $4.99, you get pancake combos that include two buttermilk pancakes, eggs any style, hash browns, and a choice of bacon, sausage, or ham.

And then they just keep the pancakes coming, three at a time, until syrup is running through your veins.

The only problem with this deal from a Dayton standpoint is that the closest IHOPs are in Mason and West Chester. But, if you are down that way or really love pancakes, it is worth the drive.

Also of note is that IHOP is offering free pancakes for National Pancake Day on Feb. 23.

On that day at IHOP between 7 a.m. and 10 p.m. you can get a free short stack of buttermilk pancakes. They will ask for a donation to the Children’s Miracle Network.

IHOP noted that since beginning its National Pancake Day celebration in 2006, IHOP has raised nearly $4 million to support charities in the communities in which it operates.

The goal this year is to reach $5 million for Children’s Miracle Network.

Elder-Beerman is starting a great four-day sale today, Jan. 7, with 50 percent to 75 percent off on many items storewide.

The clearance sale includes women’s clothes, boots, outerwear for men and women, all down comforters, and all bath and accent rugs, among others.

The online option might be better today, given the forecast. But the sale does last through Sunday.

Hotels, beach and ski deals up to 50% off

If you are planning to travel in the near future, here are some deals that could save you some cash:

In its Winter Sale, Travelocity is offering $75 off vacation travel bookings for those who buy with their American Express cards. That deal is through Feb. 28.

Expedia’s Winter Sale is discounting hotels up to 30 percent, and has an extra deal today, Jan. 6, that reportedly offers extra savings.

CheapTickets and Orbitz have the best deals on hotels today, offering savings of up to 50 percent off.

Orbitz also has beach and ski deals of 40 percent to 50 percent off.

Priceline has what it is calling “last-minute pricebreakers,” with a variety of hotel, flight and package deals.

The site calls the deals “hand-picked,” but what they really mean is there is less flexibility. If the deals meet what you need, though, they could be great.

For example, Priceline notes up to 60 percent off a 4-Star Denver hotel this month.

SmarterTravel has its deals noted, and offers good information about travel as a whole — such as guides to airline fees and deals by airline, if you have a preferred choice.

Hotwire has a nice list of cheap travel choices by destination, departure city and even theme. Hotwire also has five money-saving tools to help you travel smarter.

Travelzoo has a list of its best deals each day.

Other sites that have deals to check out include Kayak and CheapOAir, and for general information in never hurts to stop by TripAdvisor.

Tips to help keep shopping resolutions

The Coupon Sherpa had two good posts recently that can help you save money while shopping in the new year.

First off, there is the site’s Top 10 Grocery-shopping Resolutions for 2010. It is a list of simple things you can do to cut your costs when food shopping.

My favorite on that list is to create a top-20 list of the products you most often buy, and note the going prices so you know a great sale when you see it.

That one sounds kind of fun to do, too — like a study of your family’s consumer habits. I would guess ketchup, Cookie Crisp and beer would make the top 20 my house.

The other handy Coupon Sherpa list notes 6 Money-saving Resolutions for Shoppers.

Those are a bit more hard-core, but should definitely work — especially the tips that suggest you wear uncomfortable shoes or bring your husband.

I would add a seventh resolution to that list: Take stock of what you and your family owns before heading out. You may think you have nothing good to wear until you go through your closet thoroughly.

And that one won’t even hurt your feet.

Post-holiday sale at Converse

Right now, historically cool Converse is having a post-holiday sale, with savings of up to 80 percent off both footwear and clothes.

Among the items on sale are the unisex Chuck Taylor All-Star Stencil, which are usually $50, but are now $29.99.

And, for those Converse fans who missed it, our own MB Hopkins wrote a story in October on the love of Chucks.

Google introduces smart phone; Apple talks Mac Tablet release

Not only does technology move fast, but there also is heavy traffic where technology announcements are concerned.

wirednexus.jpg
Google’s Nexus One Phone. Photo from Wired

At a press conference at 1 p.m. today, Jan. 5, Google officially joined the smart phone fray, with its introduction of the Nexus One Phone — informally referred to as the “iPhone killer.”

“Nexus One is where Web meets phone,” said Google’s Mario Quedas.

According to CNN.com partner Wired magazine: “Nexus One will be a global-system device with a 3.7-inch touchscreen, 5-megapixel camera, Wi-Fi connectivity, an accelerometer and a compass.”

USA Today noted the phone will cost $179, with a two-year service contract.

The phone costs $529 without a contract.

Rival Apple’s iPhone costs from $99 to $299.

Meanwhile, maybe sensing the attention was off of it for a moment, Apple has announced this week that its new Mac Tablet is on the way.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the tablet will be unveiled in late January and ship in March.

The tablet supposedly will come with a 10- to 11-inch touch screen, which would make it closer in size to Apple’s line of MacBook laptops than its smart phone.

Apple also announced today that more than 3 billion apps have been downloaded worldwide in less than 18 months.

Kids get in free to Newport Aquarium during Winter Family Days

During Winter Family Days, which started Monday, Jan. 4, and continue through Feb. 28, up to two kids can get in free with each adult admission to Newport Aquarium.

Kids can meet penguins, pet sharks, feed birds and see all manner of fish, amphibian and jellyfish.

The hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily, and strollers are welcome.

Admission is $22 for adults, and usually $15 for children 2 through 12. So there is a potential savings of $30. Children younger than 2 are always admitted free.

In addition, during Winter Family Days, all kids will be given a free kids’ meal coupon to Bob Evans.

The aquarium is at Newport on the Levee in Kentucky, across the river from Cincinnati.

To get there from Dayton, drive south on I-75 South to 50 East/I-471 South, take 471 to Exit 5 (Newport/Route 8), turn left at bottom of exit ramp, follow the signs and proceed directly into the Newport on the Levee parking garage.

Up to 70% off storewide at Watson’s

Watson’s — “a toy store for adults” that sells pool tables, tanning beds, spas, above ground pools, furniture, fireplaces and more — is continuing its huge After-Christmas Sale through Monday, Jan. 11.

The sale sign says many items are “half-off,” which is true, but there are also savings of 20 percent to 70 percent off storewide, and “there are really good bargains in billiards, bars and bar stools,” according to a Watson’s associate, “as well as fireplaces.”

Also, he noted, Watson’s has started its preseason sales on swimming pools and spas.

Are you satisfied with your job?

There was an interesting story in the paper today, Jan. 5, about how U.S. job satisfaction has hit a record low.

According to the Conference Board studying the issue, less than half (49 percent) reported job satisfaction in 2008, according to the study released today. By comparison, 61 percent were happy with their jobs in 1987.

The reasons cited for the drop in workers’ happiness, in addition to the recession, were:

— Fewer workers consider their jobs to be interesting.

— Incomes have not kept up with inflation.

— Soaring health insurance costs have eaten into take-home pay.

Other key findings were:

— 43 percent of workers feel secure in their jobs.

— 56 percent say they like their co-workers

— Only slightly more than half (51 percent) say they are satisfied with their boss.

I know my workplace has changed in the last three years, as belts have tightened, layoffs have loomed and everyone is doing more with less. It can be hard to be satisfied when you are worried about your livelihood.

But what do you think?

Are you satisfied with your job?(polls)

Print out a free calendar online

It is the first full work day of the new year for most of us and, as we all plan for the days ahead, it is important to get our new 2010 calendars in order.

But, with many of the cutbacks at many workplaces, there are fewer free calendars to be had.

Restaurant deals should be here to stay

According to Restaurant News, a great source of info about the restaurant business as a whole, the many deals and specials that peppered the dining landscape in 2009 will, in fact, stick around for 2010 as well.

Ron Paul, president of Technomic Inc., a Chicago-based foodservice consulting firm, put it well when he said:

“Just as consumers are learning never to pay full price at the shopping center, they’ve come to expect deals in restaurants.”

Paul added that this year “restaurants at all price points will offer eye-popping deals and combos, increasingly relying on limited-time offers, seasonal specials, flavor enhancers and rotating combos to keep menus fresh.”

Cited among those are deals at Pizza Hut, of the $10 pizza deal; Papa John’s, which is running a national football month special; and Ruby Tuesday, which is advertising a Valentine’s Day special from Feb. 12-14, among other deals.

The article also notes the new Taco Bell’s new Drive-Thru Diet campaign, which reportedly offers cheap menu items that are more nutritionally sound than some others.

Hoping that “Christine” can do for Taco Bell what Jared did for Subway, Taco Bell has introduced seven “Fresco” items for the more health-conscious runs to the border.

(By the way, here’s a coupon for a free Fresco taco, if you want to give the new items a try.)

Of course, as emphasized in smallish print on all of the ads, this is not a weight-loss program — despite the name of the campaign.

This is in contrast to the fast-food chain’s long-running and hearty “Fourth Meal” ads, but it is good to have options — which brings us back to the theme of this post.

If restaurants continue to offer deals and create new ways to save, our cups and plates may just runneth over with choices on where to eat out for less this year. And I will continue to note those deals and offers on this blog.

Anyone else hungry?

Deals this week on fitness, school supplies

Here are some of the better deals this week at area stores:

Today, Jan. 3, is the final day of Macy’s New Year’s Kick-off Sale, with savings of up to 85 percent off. That sale started Wednesday.

Staples and Office Depot appear to have gone back to back-to-school sales, hoping to catch some shoppers before their return to college.

Staples has multiple supplies for $1, including one-subject notebooks, dry erase markers, scissors and composition books. The store also has a 60-sheet pack of Photo Plus 4-by-6-inch paper for $1, after rebate. That paper is regularly $9.99.

As for more high-tech supplies, Staples also has 4GB USB flash drives for $12.99 (regularly $19.99) and a 100-pack of Sony CD-R media discs for $15.98 (they are regularly $42.98), among other savings.

Office Depot also is going the dollar deal route on select supplies. In addition, the store has multiple storage totes and stacking crates for buy one, get one free. The store also is running a sale on PCs, offering up to $150 off.

Kmart is trying to help some of us keep at least one new year’s resolution by having “all fitness” items on sale, and buy-one-get-one-free deals on many types of vitamins.

Dick’s Sporting Goods also has fitness equipment on sale.

For example, this week you can get $1,000 off a 20-inch-by-55-inch treadbelt Livestrong Treadmill, with the final cost being $999.99.

At Kmart, you can get a 18-inch-by-50-inch treadbelt Weslo Pro CrossWalk treadmill for $379.99.

The Dick’s treadmill is bigger and sturdier, but the final price is cheaper at Kmart. It is always good to remember, when buying fitness equipment, that classified ads and sites like eBay are good places to check as well.

Kmart also is having a family footwear clearance of up to 50 percent off, and Dick’s is in the midst of a storewide clearance sale with 40 percent to 70 percent off select clothes and shoes.

Also this week, Sears is selling fall and winter apparel for up to 60 percent off and is having its semiannual “intimate event,” with deals of 30 percent to 50 percent off all bras, panties and shapewear.

If you have pets, SuperPetz has a clearance section that has discounts of up to 90 percent off storewide, and Complete Petmart is having a winter stock-up sale offering discounts on pet food, chews and toys.

More than 200,000 play yards recalled

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recalled more than 200,000 Safety 1st Disney Care Center Play Yard and Eddie Bauer Complete Care Play Yards on Wednesday, Dec. 30, due to a suffocation hazard.

playyard.jpg
One of the play yards recalled.

The CPSC said the one piece metal bars supporting the floorboard of the bassinet attachment can come out of the fabric sleeves and create an uneven sleeping surface, posing a risk of suffocation or positional asphyxiation.

No injuries have been reported.

The play yards were sold at Babies R Us, Kmart, Sears, Target and Walmart from January 2007 through October 2009 for between $100 and $130.

For model numbers, see the CPSC site.

It is recommended that consumers immediately stop using the bassinet attachment to the play yard and contact Dorel Juvenile Group for a free repair kit.

Top 12 money-saving tips for 2010

Happy New Year!

If one of your resolutions for 2010 is to save money, here are 12 ways to make that happen:

— Evaluate your spending from the previous year. Where did you spend too much? How can that be corrected this year? Then make a budget and stick to it. Being organized reduces the chance of overspending.

— Refinance your mortgage. The rates have been extremely low lately. Call your bank to see what the rate is and how much you can save.

— Use the library. Get access to books, DVDs, CDs and video games for free.

— Use coupons every time you go grocery shopping. It is a small time investment, but can net sizable savings.

— Bring your lunch to work. Limit expensive coffee trips. A good creamer can go a long way.

— Cook more, and make a lot. Leftovers are free meals.

— Watch for sales on items you buy all the time and stock up. Check out thrift stores to see what they have to offer.

— Take care of yourself. Wash hands, eat and drink less. This is not only a happier way to live, but it will save you money at the doctor.

— Take care of your car. Routine maintenance goes a long way.

— Shop around for insurance. Are you paying too much?

— If you plan to travel, shop around for the best fares and hotel rates. There are many to sites (such as Travelocity and CheapTickets, as well as aggregate sites such as Kayak) to help you.

— Pay yourself first. Put a select amount of your paycheck into savings immediately, before you have a chance to spend it. Make a deal with yourself to leave that money alone except in case of emergency.
