Presidents Day sales focus on appliances, mattresses, computers
What would Abraham Lincoln and George Washington choose to discount in honor of their birthdays?
Probably pipe tobacco and wigs, respectively. But, since those aren’t as fashionable today, area retailers went with appliances, mattresses and computers for their Presidents Day sales this week.
Appliances
I have hesitated to mention appliance sales of late, because I am waiting for the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, also known as Cash for Appliances, to kick in.
In that federal program, Ohioans will qualify for rebates of $100 to $250 on multiple Energy Star qualified appliances. It is supposed to start in the next month or two.
However, some of the deals this week offer discounts that can get you hundreds of dollars in savings, and could make buying now also worth your money.
Sears has the best deal on appliances this week, with its three-day sale marking down Energy Star qualified appliances 25 percent and other appliances 20 percent. The store also will take an additional 5 percent off when you use your Sears card.
Best Buy has all Energy Star qualified major appliances for 20 percent off, and 15 percent off major appliances in general.
Get 20 percent off select Samsung appliances at hhgregg.
Mattresses
As for mattress deals, JCPenney tops Sears.
Through Tuesday, JCPenney has 50 percent to 65 percent off, with an extra $50 back with some mattress purchases and a free comforter when you buy select Serta mattresses.
Sears has 50 percent off Sealy, Serta and other mattresses and foundations, plus an additional $100 to $500 off during its mattress closeout sale. Sears’ sale ends Thursday.
Sleep Number is having a final closeout on multiple 2009 bed sets, and has select beds for 50 percent off through Feb. 21.
Macy’s also has mattress savings of up to 50 percent off, and Morris Home Furnishings is having a half-off mattress sale through Monday.
Computers
Staples and Office Depot are duking it out for the best computer deals this week.
Both have savings of up to $250 on select laptops, and both offer similar 15.6-inch models for $350.
Staples beats Office Depot for tax software deals, though, selling the TurboTax Deluxe edition for $49.99, when Office Depot has it for $59.99.
Miscellaneous
Some of the other deals that stand out in honor of two of our finest leaders include:
JCPenney also has other furniture on sale, with 30 to 50 percent off bedroom sets, 40 to 50 percent off dining rooms, and discounts around 50 percent off many items for the home, including towels, rugs and pillows.
Elder-Beerman has furniture, including 30 percent to 50 percent off all recliners, and home items on sale as well.
Macy’s has 30 percent to 60 percent off storewide, plus an extra 15 percent or 10 percent off with Macy’s card or Savings Pass. If you don’t find a Savings Pass in your newspaper, you can get one online at www.macys.com.
Michaels gets the prize for the most patriotic savings, offering its commemorative flag cases for $19.99 each (they are regularly $39.99), while Kmart gets points for being constructive.
Kmart has a deal in which it will donate $1 from every purchase of Fruit of the Loom Rugged Collection underwear bought through the end of the year to Rebuilding Together Inc., an organization that provides critical home repair and accessibility modifications to low-income homeowners.
Rite Aid and Walgreens have many items for buy one, get one free, while CVS/Pharmacy has many items for a catchy buy one, get one for 1 cent.
All the drugstores will have its final Valentine’s Day sales offerings today, but the pickings likely will be slim.
Last-minute deals for Valentine’s Day
If you are in the market for some fast, yet romantic, jewelry, Macy’s has up to 50 percent (plus 10 percent) off fine jewelry, JCPenney has its jewelry for 50 to 70 percent off, Elder-Beerman has 60 percent off its sterling silver jewelry and Meijer has its finest for 70 percent off plus an additional 10 percent off.
The bonus about shopping for jewelry at Meijer is that you can pick up a heart shaped cake ($4.99), a box of candy (Dove Valentine’s Hearts are $7.99), a heart-happy Webkinz stuffed animal ($9.99) or a dozen roses ($15) at the same time.
And speaking of the all-important floral end of today’s holiday, all grocery stores and many florists are open today for your emergency Valentine’s Day needs.
For example, Furst Florist will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and is offering same-day delivery.
You can get a dozen premium roses for $24.99 cash and carry (nicely wrapped, without vase) or a dozen long-stemmed roses, arranged in a red glass vase with a decorative bow, babies breath and so on for $69.99.
