Cadmium cited in children’s jewelry recall
Children’s winter and Christmas-themed jewelry was recalled Thursday, March 11, due to the high levels of cadmium they contain.
This recall involves Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and Bumble Snowman bracelets sold with charms including a snowman, Christmas tree, candy cane and snowflake.
Cadmium can be toxic if ingested, and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission determined that more than 20,000 micrograms of cadmium were released from the snowman charm on the jewelry alone.
USA Today noted in its report that cadmium is a carcinogen that also can damage kidneys and bones.
In February, U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, announced his support for legislation that would prevent the manufacture, distribution or sale of children’s jewelry containing cadmium and other toxic heavy metals. On Friday, he expressed support of this recall.
The recalled bracelets were sold at discount and dollar-type stores nationwide.
The CPSC said consumers should immediately take these charm bracelets away from children and dispose of the jewelry.
The importer of the jewelry, Buy-Rite Designs of Freehold, N.J., is no longer in business, so refunds are not noted as options in this recall.
