Make fabric gift bags for holiday
This holiday gift-wrap idea from reader Harolyn Burns of Clearcreek Twp. is simple and clever: Pull out the sewing machine and create fabric gift bags.
“My youngest sister got the idea at least 35 years ago and we all adopted it,” she says. “By family rules, you got to keep the bags that your gifts came in,” so during the years, the assortment of fabric prints grew.
Burns says she keeps her bags in a plastic storage box, “along with the various ribbons, yarns, etc., that were used to tie them shut.”
To prepare for 2012, she recommends scouring fabrics stores after Christmas when remaining holiday-themed fabrics are usually offered at deep discounts.
“Another advantage of cloth bags is that they can be tailored to the size of the gift,” she notes. “We have a huge red-and-white striped flannel bag that was made to hold our daughter’s first bicycle - she’s now 46.”
