My Facebook friend posted a link to a truly terrific online sale at www.bathandbodyworks.com.

The merchant is offering up to 75 percent off select body-care products. What I find remarkable: exclusive body creams and lotions, as well as fragrance mists and shower gels, which normally retail for $9.50, are now $3.

Don&amp;#8217;t delay, however, as my favorite scent, Dark Kiss is already sold out.

&#8220;Now is a great time to create the at-home gym and adhere to any fitness resolutions,&#8221; says John Parson, director of sales for G&amp;G Fitness, which is the parent company of the Fitness Stores in Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York.

&#8220;Time is a precious commodity,&#8221; he adds, and fashioning a home gym allows us to work out according to our schedules. &#8220;And arguably it can take you as long to get to and from the gym as it does to do your workout at home.&#8221;

Fashionistas will love to know that many shops &amp;#8212; from upscale boutiques to junior apparel chains &amp;#8212; are clearing out their winter merchandise this month to make room for the new spring collections.

Retailers have given us the perfect opportunity to fluff our winter wardrobes with such go-to items as down jackets, wool coats or hats and scarves.

Although after-Christmas sales focused on winter apparel discounts, many retailers are offering even stronger sales this month, according to www.DealNews.com.

Deal News also advises us to keep watch for impressive discounts from French Connection, Express (which last year progressively offered deeper discounts throughout the month), Levi&amp;#8217;s, J.Crew, Aeropostale, Banana Republic and Barneys New York.

<content type="application/xhtml+xml" xml:space="preserve">
To step up your fitness goals for 2012 and overcome that feeling of post-holiday inertia, start walking.

It&amp;#8217;s arguably the most affordable form of exercise (you just need a pair of good shoes and comfy clothes), and the world is your oyster as far as places to walk.

Here are my suggestions for getting started:

Invest in good shoes. Turn to the experts at a shoe or sporting-goods shop to fit you with sneakers that offer comfort and support.
Set realistic goals. If your goal is to walk two hours a day, 365 days a year, you might be setting yourself up for failure. Aim for a more realistic goal, such as 30 minutes five days a week.
Track your progress. Mayo Clinic also recommends keeping a record of how many steps you take, the distance you walk and how long it takes to help you see where you started from and serve as a source of inspiration.
Implement the buddy system to stay motivated. Nothing keeps us on our toes as much as making a commitment with a spouse, partner, friend or neighbor to work out.
Make safety No. 1. If you walk in the evening, then be sure to wear reflective gear. If you walk alone, then be sure to tell someone the route you&amp;#8217;re taking.

With paper, ink and a printer, you can create a 2012 calendar to reflect your personal flair and help you slide into the New Year with a sense of organization.

Check out www.freeprint.com, for instance, where you can choose from a wide variety of calendar templates to download.

Or let the pros at such websites as www.vistaprint.com do all the printing. For a limited time, you can design your own 2012 wall, wallet, poster or desk calendar for free at the website. (You will pay for shipping and processing costs.)

The process is quite snazzy, and you can customize the templates provided.

According to www.DealNews.com, there are times when it makes sense to invest more in a product to get a better return.

For instance, the website recommends passing on cheap cosmetics. The goal of makeup is to make your skin look naturally flawless, and inexpensive cosmetics are more likely to look unnatural or cake later in the day.

One exception: Maybelline&amp;#8217;s Great Lash Mascara ($6.40), which consistently makes the top beauty lists.

Continuing in the altruistic spirit of the season, we have more ideas for spreading good will &amp;#8212; especially to those less fortunate.

At www.Kinoliinc.com, consumer and money-saving expert Andrea Woroch has a fabulous idea: Donate unwanted gift cards to charities.

She says the Make-A-Wish Foundation, for example, accepts donations of gift cards that are then used toward granting the wishes of children facing life-threatening illnesses.

Locally, you also can call your favorite charity to see if it accepts gift cards; if it doesn&amp;#8217;t, then simply use your card to purchase items (food or clothing, for instance) you know the nonprofit group will accept.

• Don&amp;#8217;t delay. Most retailers offer a limited window of opportunity to make returns.

• Remember: Receipts are still the key to hassle-free returns. Some stores will allow you to exchange merchandise without a receipt, but oftentimes will only provide merchandise credit for the lowest markdown price at which the item was sold during the holiday season.

• Hang on to all original packaging, tags and parts. Some retailers won&amp;#8217;t accept returns unless the item is in its original package.

The rustling of gift paper as presents were eagerly unwrapped this year has been my inspiration for finding festive and affordable ways to decorate for Christmas 2012.

First of all, repurpose and recycle all the elements of holiday packaging, if appropriate.

Don&amp;#8217;t forget to reuse (any time of the year) bubble wrap and packing peanuts.

Also set aside any unused gift wrap, cards, ribbons or other materials you might have purchased this year.

I hang on to especially beautiful Christmas cards, for instance, I receive each year.

During the holiday season, I stick these gorgeous images into inexpensive black photo frames and place them on the mantel or an end table to dress things up.

Here are three inexpensive ways to wrap presents and make them look pretty:

• Use this never-fail method: Place the gift inside a glam gift bag and then add some elegant tissue paper. (Visit the neighborhood dollar store for cheap gift bags, or you can always repurpose gift bags.)

• Grab the newspaper and tear out pages to wrap gifts. Use the black-and-white pages, for instance, and then adorn the package with red, hot pink or black ribbon to make a clever and dramatic statement.

• If you&amp;#8217;re a seamstress or crafter, look through your closet or storage box for leftover tulle or netting. To wrap with tulle or netting, simply place the gift in the center of a piece large enough to cover the item. Gather all the fabric to the top and tie off with a festive piece of ribbon.

When my 18-year-old nephew, Duke, asked me what I wanted for Christmas, I said, &amp;#8220;Nothing.&amp;#8221;

&amp;#8220;Are you sure?&amp;#8221; he sweetly asked.

I pondered for a minute, and then said, &amp;#8220;I don&amp;#8217;t want you spending any money on me, but if you could detail my car, that would be awesome.&amp;#8221;

He agreed, and I know at some point during his holiday break from Ohio University, I will have a clean car, and the lemonade, coffee and diet soda I have repeatedly spilled inside my ride will no longer be a sticking point.

Sometimes the best presents are from the heart and cost nothing.

Whether you&amp;#8217;re a money-strapped college student or someone facing financially challenging times, remember: Most people don&amp;#8217;t expect lavish gifts.

Most of us want your presence, a phone call, a hug, a batch of cookies or even the promise of performing a chore we really don&amp;#8217;t like to do.

Attention procrastinators: We have last-minute holiday gift ideas to help you cruise through the remaining shopping days and land into Christmas with all the aplomb and ease of Santa Claus.

Here are some tips to avoid the last-minute scramble for Christmas gift-giving:

Head for the grocery store gift-card kiosk, where you usually can find gift cards in such categories as entertainment, dining out, travel, sports and clothing. You can also log on to giftcards.kroger.com for ideas.
Many major online merchants, including JCPenney, Kohl&amp;#8217;s and Target, are promoting today as the last day to order and have gifts delivered by Christmas.
Take a break from the laptop and visit the PNC 2nd Street Market from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday and Friday and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. Choose from about 40 vendors, according to Val Hunt Beerbower, public relations specialist for Five Rivers MetroParks, including holiday season-only vendors. For more details, call (937) 228-2088.

The fashion forecast for New Year&amp;#8217;s Eve: Anything sparkling goes.

If you want a seriously haute couture look for parties this year, but can&amp;#8217;t afford the designer price tags, then check out www.RenttheRunway.com.

The site features more than 150 designers (including Helmut Lang, Rebecca Taylor, Kate Spade and Missoni), more than 25,000 dresses, rental prices up to 90 percent off retail, and accessories (including Kenneth Jay Lane and House of Harlow 1960) for almost any occasion.

The process is easy: Register for free on the site; select your ensemble; enter your size (you can select two to ensure fit); enter the date you want your merchandise to arrive and choose to keep it for either four or eight days; and then checkout.

After your event, just mail back the frock in the package that is provided. Rent the Runway will take care of the dry cleaning.
