Farmer carries badly injured niece 4-days to reach help

Think about this story the next time some one complains about the waiting in an area emergency room.

The Cairns Post reports that a 40 year-old Papua New Guinea farmer carried his 6-year-old niece four-days before reaching help.

Did we mention that the girl was so badly injured from a fall that her intestines - yes those intestines - were exposed.

Iambai Pisau went to his niece’s village school near the Indonesia boarder Thursday, April 23, after she fell out on a classroom window onto to a sharp hibiscus tree.

The girl’s abdomen was punctured, according to the newspaper.

Pisau took her to the village’s first aid station to find the officer away.

The pair then embarked on an harrowing journey that included an ambulance ride, a broken down dinghy and a night in a “bush hut at the mouth of a crocodile-infested river,” according to the newspaper.

The little girl eventually reached Cairns Base Hospital in Australia where a living life-saving surgery was conducted.

“It was a long way and she was in pain the whole way,” Pisau told the newspaper.

“I did it because that’s what I had to do.”

Couple ignores ‘keep off the grass’ sign, has sex at Queen’s lawn

Either they were loaded or thought they were outside a fancy hotel at a nudist resort.

Japanese tourist video recorded a couple having sex on Queen Elizabeth’s lawn at Windsor Castle, the London Telegraph reported Thursday, April 30.

Read gripping account here.

The article describes the lovers as being in their 30s - “respectable people with respectable jobs.”

“The couple did not care who was looking and just kept going as if they were in their own bedroom, one man told the newspaper. “They even ignored the Please Keep Off The Grass signs.”

The pair stripped on a private grass bank and were watched by a crowd of tourist for up to 20 minutes.

They were arrested by armed Royal Protection Squad officers and jailed overnight to sober up.

The Queen was home during the couple’s sexcapades, but didn’t see a thing. What do you think? Comment below.

Miss California in new anti-gay marriage ad

Say something controversial during the Miss USA competition and you might become a poster child.

Miss California Carrie Prejean’s anti-same sex statements are used in a new set of TV ads by a group opposes same sex marriage.

The ad “No Offense” opens with footage of Ms. Prejean’s response to a Miss USA competition question about same sex marriage posed by celebrity blogger Perez Hilton on April 19, 2009, according to National Organization for Marriage.

Prejean has been praised and criticized for her statements from those on either side of the fence.

National Organization for Marriage says Prejean has been attacked unfairly due to her believes.

“The ad highlights the efforts of same-sex marriage activists to silence and discredit pro-marriage advocates, calling them ‘liars,’ ‘bigots,’ and worse,” the group says.

Prejean drew applause and boos when she said the following:

“We live in a land where you can choose same-sex marriage or opposite marriage,” Prejean said. “And you know what, I think in my country, in my family, I think that I believe that a marriage should be between a man and a woman. No offense to anybody out there, but that’s how I was raised.”

Barbie gives Bratz a beat down

A federal judge gave Barbie a belated 50th birthday present late Monday - her rival’s oversized head on a silver platter.

The judge upheld a $100 million jury verdict for Mattel Inc. in its battle over rights to the Bratz doll, a rival to Mattel’s Barbie, according to the Associated Press.

Read AP story here.

The judge confirmed that Barbie is queen ‘b’ and owns the Bratz, which have been marketed by MGA Entertainment Inc. since 2001.

Mattel sued MGA in 2004, alleging that Bratz designer Carter Bryant developed the concept for the sassy, big-lipped doll while working for Mattel.

A temporary federal receiver was appointed to take control of the Bratz brand and MGA’s assets.

MGA plans to appeal the ruling.

Restaurant drops popular, yummy salad

Breaking salad news from Meredith Moss, Staff Writer…

If the Harvest Salad at Dewey’s Pizza has become one of your favorites, better head for the restaurant sometime the week: it’s about to be taken off the menu. Sunday will be its last day.

The popular salad includes mixed greens, dried figs, toasted pumpkin seeds, boursin cheese and has a apple-cider vinaigrette dressing.

We got the word from one of the servers, then confirmed it with director of operations manager Chuck Lipp, who turns out to be the creator of the salad.

Lipp grew up in Centerville and now lives in Cincy and works for the 14 restaurant chain.

Lipp says the change is partly due to the fact that the apple cider in the salad dressing is more difficult to get this time of year. He says the Harvest will be replaced by the strawberry macadamia nut salad but will return in the fall.

Dewey’s is located at 131 Jasper Street, just off Brown Street.

‘Anti-sagging’ law ruled unconstitutional

Kids in Florida can once again let their pants hang low.

A judge last week called an ordinance banning sagging pants unconstitutional and struck it down, according to the Palm Beach Post.

No matter how “tacky or distasteful” the fashion style, freedom of choice and liberties guaranteed under the 14th Amendment must prevail Judge Laura Johnson said, according to the newspaper.

Read article here.

Riviera Beach voters overwhelmingly approved the ordinance which carried a $150 fine or community service for a first offense.

Cities in Michigan and Louisiana have passed similar laws and Atlanta, Dallas and other cities have considered fining those who sag.

Crocs controversy, where do you stand?

This weekend’s warm weather brought out the Crocs.

A sea of people in the vented plastic clog surrounded me where ever I went.

There was no escape.

DDN04xx09lifepstyle210.JPG

Crocs people ran. They jumped and they played catch with the kids.

Crocs have been called everything from snazzy to trashy since hitting the market hard in 2002 and 2003.

I have never met a pair of Crocs I didn’t want to smack.

As one blogger puts it, ‘Crocs are not OK.”

Maybe I am wrong.

Filet-O-Fishy, man claims he lost 15 pounds on McDonalds diet

Call me crazy, but something about this sounds a little Filet-O-Fishy.

A 40-year-old San Diego man claims he dropped 15 pounds in 30 days on a diet of McDonalds’ grub.

Doug Logeais’ experience is nothing like what happened to filmmaker Morgan Spurlock.

Spurlock got all fat and sick when he ate nothing but McDonalds for 30 days.

He made the 2004 documentary “Super Size Me.”

Logeais is also making documentary and could use some of you money.

As far-fetched as the thing sounds, maybe, perhaps it is possible.

Unlike Spurlock, Logeais selected Mickey D’s “healthier options,” according to a London Daily Mail article.

“I would once in a while go for a chocolate chip cookie or the chicken McNuggets. Those are great,” he said.

Is Indiana’s gambling joke on Ohio?

From Kyle Nagel, Staff Writer

It was a confident ride up the escalator away from the Argosy Casino gaming area with a few extra dollars in the front pocket when an overheard conversation showed the other side of the coin.

Man: Awwww, my wife’s gonna kill me.

Woman: What happened?

Man: Jeez, a lost way more than I should have. Oh mannn.

Woman: How much?

Man: (Through pained grunts) Well, I knew I could only lose $400, but I went back to the ATM a few times and I lost about $3,000. I kept thinking I would win it back. Ouch.

On a side note, about 40 percent of the cars in the parking garage had Ohio license plates.

Indiana still laughs.

Miss California not sorry for antigay marriage comment, said it cost her Miss USA title

Who knew a blogging queen and a beauty queen could spark such a controversy?

Miss California Carrie Prejean says her answer to a question about same-sex marriage Sunday, April 19, cost her the Miss USA pageant.

But you know what? She’s not sorry.

Openly gay gossip blogger Perez Hilton, a pageant judge and the self-proclaimed ‘Queen of all Media,’ asked Prejean if she thought same-sex marriage should be legalized in every state.

“We live in a land where you can choose same-sex marriage or opposite marriage,” Prejean said. “And you know what, I think in my country, in my family, I think that I believe that a marriage should be between a man and a woman. No offense to anybody out there, but that’s how I was raised.”

Some in the audience cheered, but several others booed.

Read article about pageant here.

Hilton during a YouTube.com post later that night called Prejean a dumb b-word.

He said he would have snatched the tiara off of Prejean’s empty head if she would have won the title.

The blogger took back the b-word thing, but later took back his take back.

Prejean on Tuesday, April 21, told Today Show host Matt Lauer she spoke from her heart and for her God when she gave her answer.

She said her answer was not about being political correct, but was being biblically correct.

“I’m so proud of myself,” Prejean told today show host Matt Lauer. “I wouldn’t change a thing. I knew I had a purpose, and I don’t take back what I said.”

Hilton said Prejean should have keep her politics and religion to herself because Miss USA represents all Americans.

Eatery’s new toilets talk of town

Talk about an upgrade.

The restrooms at Tank’s Bar & Grill, 2033 Wayne Ave., Dayton, have gone from stinky to swanky.

The recently unveiled restrooms are part of a renovation that includes a new kitchen and additional seating.

On another note, the bar now serves its popular breakfast menu throughout its operating hours.

DSCN2958.JPG

The blinged out powder rooms are the talk of Facebook. Some say they are too fancy while others like um.

The bathrooms feature no touch doors handles, actual mirrors and shiny metal ceiling panels. There is tile as far as the eye can see and get this, a baby changing station.

The restrooms are a far cry from the burger and brew joint’s old restrooms which were scary and cramped.

Damiene Iriarte apparently has one thing going for himself - flexibility.

The 26-year-old convicted child molester bit off the tip of his own wee wee, The New York Daily News reported Wednesday, April 15.

He was charged with raping a 13-year-old girl in 2003, but pleaded guilty to two misdemeanors and was sentenced to 60 days in jail and probation, the newspaper reported.

The woman allegedly threatened to castrate her ex-boyfriend’s genitals with a stun gun, The Local reported.

A whole lot of porn found in boy’s PSP player

A Florida boy received an eyeful of porn when he turned on a PSP player his mom says she picked up at a Wal-Mart near Bradenton, Fla.

The boy’s mother told Fox 13- WTVT that the Play Station Portable she bought her son for a late Christmas gift contained hundreds of pornographic images.

The 6-year-old saw a woman in her birthday suit when he turned the gaming system on for the first time Saturday, April 11, the station reported.

Fearing he’d be grounded, he ran to his mother in tears.

The mother said the game’s memory card contained hundreds of pornographic images.

A Wal-Mart representative told the station they are looking into the matter.

Is Facebook a brain drain?

Everyone knows Facebook can be a time sucker, but maybe it is sucking on brain cells as well.

A recent Ohio State University study has found a link between Facebook use and lower graders in college.

ddn120607facebookxxer.JPG

College students with Facebook accounts have lower grade point averages than students who have not signed up for the social networking site, according to the pilot study.

Facebook users had GPAs between 3.0 and 3.5. Non-users had GPAs between 3.5 and 4.0, the study reported.

About 220 Ohio State students took part in the study. More than half of the participants had Facebook accounts.

The study will be presented Thursday, April 16, at the annual meeting of the American Education Research Association in San Diego.

“We can’t say that use of Facebook leads to lower grades and less studying - but we did find a relationship there,” said Aryn Karpinski, co-author of the study.

The fact that Facebook user spent less time studying should come to no surprise.

Who has time to study when there is Mafia War to play and photos to tag?

Body Snake for people who don’t like to move in the shower

It’s like we are living in the future.

The day has finally come that you can take a shower with little to no movement.

The Body Snake might be crazy enough to dethrone the Snuggie as the most ridiculous “ As Seen on TV” product on the market.

The handcrafted, intestine-shaped flexible foam mesh is apparently for people who either can’t bother taking a shower like the rest of us or are tripped up by “scrubbers and brushes that just don’t work.”

Yippee!

“No more fumbling and stumbling in the shower,” the commercial promises.

The offer also includes a Foot Scrubber.

“This amazing foot scrubber cleans and scrubs your entire foot without ever having to bend over,” the commercial says. “Guaranteed.”

It retails for $24.95 plus shipping and handling.

States declare war on lottery playing, drug-addicted poor

Doesn’t this seem just a little strange?

As more people seek public assistance, some states are adding more restrictions.

The Tennessee Legislature is considering a bill that would cap lottery winnings for people on welfare and other public assistance at $600.

And lawmakers in at least seven states want those who receive food stamps, unemployment benefits or welfare to submit to random drug testing.

Read Associated Press article here.

The states include West Virginia, Kansas, Missouri, Hawaii, Oklahoma, Florida and Minnesota.

The Arizona Senators attempted such a law, but it failed.

“Nobody’s being forced into these assistance programs,” Craig Blair, a Republican in the West Virginia Legislature, told the AP. “If so many jobs require random drug tests these days, why not these benefits?”

Ohio lawmakers haven’t picked up on this trend which may come as good news to lottery playing, drug-addicted welfare recipients.

What do you think? Should people on welfare be allowed to play the lottery? Should they be required to take drug tests? Comment below.

Billy Bob Thornton goes off on radio show host

Actor Billy Bob Thornton went a little ‘Joaquin Phoenix loopy’ before going off on a Canadian radio show host Wednesday, April 8.

Thornton, who was promoting his country- pop band The Boxmasters, got all ticked when host Jian Ghomeshi discussed Thornton’s other job - well-known actor who use to wear Angelina Jolie’s blood necklace.

Stupid CBC radio talk show dude, bringing up stuff people know.

Then again, the talk show host did imply that the band’s biggest claim to fame is that Thornton is an Oscar-winner with a passion for music.

Oh no he did not!

The ‘S’ bomb dropping Thornton set the host straight about agreed upon discussion points.

“We also said we didn’t want to hear anything about how this was my first love. You wouldn’t say that to Tom Petty would you?” Thornton told Ghomeshi. “‘I understand music is your first love.’ Well, my first love was a chick named Lisa Cowen.”

Levi Johnston to Palins - ‘liar, liar pants on fire’

The Palin/ Johnston feud may come down to the definition of the word ‘stayed.’

Days after being called a liar, Levi Johnston called his baby mama’s family members liars during a CBS Early Show interview Thursday, April 9.

Johnston, who hopes to be an electrician or model/actor, said he lived with Alaska Governor Sarah Palin and her family before Bristol Palin, his then girlfriend, gave birth to son Tripp.

But the Palins, following Johnston’s dirty laundry airing appearance on Monday’s “Tyra Banks Show,” called Johnston a big liar.

“Levi has never lived under the same roof as Bristol or any of the Palins,” a Palin family spokeswoman told CNN.

Johnston and his family said ‘whatever.’

In the CBS interview, Johnston said he had a toothbrush and pajamas at the Palin’s house and for awhile, slept there every night.

“They said I didn’t live there,” Johnston said. ” I ‘stayed there.’ I was like, ‘OK, whatever you want to call it’ — I had all my stuff there. So, if you wanna call it ‘staying there,’ that’s fine.”

Johnston’s mom Sherry, and sister Mercede, were also interviewed.

Mercede Johnston called the Palins snobby.

“Look what they are doing,” she said. “They are lying, trying to save their selves and they are the ones who ask for it. They brought him into the campaign. They should have knew what was coming. They can’t turn around and try to take it back now.”

Asa George replaced on ‘Fox 45 in the Morning’

Economic pressures have forced a familiar face from “Fox 45 in the Morning, ” Dean Ditmer, Fox 45/ ABC 22 general manager, said Wednesday, April 8.

Anchor Asa George has been let go.

George, who helped launch the 4-hour morning show three years ago, was told Friday, April 3, that she was being taken off the air and that her contract would not be renewed.

Ditmer said she decided to leave two months before the contract’s official expiration date.

The decision to replace George, a five-year employee, with Kylie Conway was economic and not entered into lightly, he said.

“This is a sign of the times,” Ditmer said. “ People are asking ‘what’s the story behind the story,’ unfortunately it’s the same story that has been heard before.”

The station, like many business, has been asked to tighten its budget , Ditmer said.

There were a series of staff cuts by the station last year, including Mark Pompilio, a news anchor at WKEF-TV Channel 22/WRGT-TV Fox 45 for 10 years.

Conway, who has previously worked in Toledo, joined Fox 45 earlier this year. She works with Pete Scalia, Rhonda Moore and Mike Terwilleger.

Ditmer said George had been a great asset to the station and community.

“Asa is a wonderful talent and she was a great face for the station,” he said. “I think Asa is going to do great things. I am looking forward to watching her career.”

When contacted Wednesday, April 8, George, who was raised in Houston, said she was saddened that she will no longer work for the station and now must leave the community.

“Dayton has been my home for five years, ” she said. “It has been a wonderful place. Its been a great place to gain experience. I’ve met wonderful people.”

George said she treasures the relationships she has built in Dayton and will miss serving the community.

“It kills me,” she said. “I have invested in this community.”

Despite a tight job market, George is trying to remain positive and is working with agents from New York-based NS Bienstock to find employment.

“It is like they always say, when one door closes another one opens,” George said. “I am looking forward to seeing what happens in the future.”

In the meantime, she plans to do volunteer work at organizations like the Humane Society of Greater Dayton.

Palin gets flak for daughter’s public baby daddy drama

It’s not exactly like the Hatfields and the McCoys, but there is definitely a feud between the Palin and Johnston families.

Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin’s family kicked hard Monday, April 6, basically calling Levi Johnston, Bristol Palin’s baby daddy, a big fat moose-loving liar.

“Levi has never lived under the same roof as Bristol or any of the Palins,” a Palin family spokeswoman told CNN.

Wowza!

The family referred to Levi’s appearance with his mom and sister on the April 6 episode of “The Tyra Bank Show.”

Sarah Palin swung back and is now catching flak from those who say that by commenting on Levi’s Tyra interview, she made it must-see TV.

A statement from the family Friday was even sharper.

“Bristol did not even know Levi was going on the show. We’re disappointed that Levi and his family, in a quest for fame, attention, and fortune, are engaging in flat-out lies, gross exaggeration, and even distortion of their relationship,” the statement said.

Read more about it here.

Johnston, who until recently was engaged to Bristol, said he moved in with the Palins in December, shortly before the birth of baby Tripp.

During the Tyra interview, Johnston, 19, also implied Sarah Palin, probably knew he was having relations of the sexual type with then underage Bristol.

And Johnston hinted he was suffering a case of baby mama drama, saying Bristol allows him to see Tripp, but won’t let him take the child anywhere.

Wayne Avenue store near rejected Kroger site closing

The intersection of Wayne Avenue and Wyoming Street will soon get another big, empty building.

A liquidation sale is going on at Rite Aid Pharmacy, 1431 Wayne Avenue, according to Rite Aid spokeswoman Cheryl Slavinsky.

Merchandise was 25 percent off on Tuesday, April 7.

getimage.jpg

The store’s pharmacy closed March 20 and pharmacy department workers were assigned to other area Rite Aid stores. Pharmacy information was transferred to the nearby Walgreens.

Slavinsky said the Wayne Avenue Rite Aid location “was simply under performing.”

“It just makes good financial sense to close under performing stores,” she said.

There is no definite close date for the store housed in a 11,000 square foot building.

Current employees will have the option to relocate to one of Rite Aid’s other seven area Dayton stores, Slavinsky said.

The brick Rite Aid building is locate across from the Spanish Colonial Revival style Ecki Building.

That building’s site was to be apart of a new Wayne Avenue Kroger supermarket, but in December, the Cincinnati-based company announced it was pulling out of the deal.

The City of Dayton hopes to buy the land for redevelopment.

Local breastfeeding mom outdone, 19-year accused of breastfeeding while drunk driving

It seems Genine Compton - the Dayton area’s breast-feeding-while-driving mother - has been outdone by an Aussie.

A 19-year-old woman has allegedly raised the bad time for breastfeeding bar.

The woman was drunk and breastfeeding her five-month-old Saturday, April 4, when police say she nearly slammed an unregistered and uninsured station wagon into a police cruiser, Australia’s Courier-Mail reported.

The near accident happened as the teen drove away from a bar’s parking lot in the town of Alice Springs.

Police stopped suddenly to avoid the collision, but saw the young mother drive off with the baby attached to one breast, the London Daily Mail reported.

The woman faces a variety of charges, including failing to provide a breath sample, driving while disqualified in an unregistered and uninsured motor vehicle and driving with an unrestrained child, the Courier-Mail reported.

Compton, 39, of Harrison Twp., was recently sentenced to unsupervised probation and fined more than $300 after being convicted of unlawful child restraint and “disorderly/ persists” charges.

Kettering police cited Compton after another motorist saw her breastfeeding her child while driving and talking on a cell phone Feb. 26 near Far Hills Avenue and Dorothy Lane.

Sarah Palin mad at her daughter’s baby daddy

Oh snap, it looks like Levi Johnston has messed with the wrong baby mama mama.

Johnston, in an episode of the Tyra Banks Show set to air Monday, April 6, puts out some dirty, sexy laundry about his romance with former fiancee Bristol Palin.

His mom, Sherry, and sister Mercede, also get their 15 minutes of fame on the talk show.

According to clips, Johnston, 18, implies Bristol’s mama, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, probably knew he was getting it on til the break of dawn with then 17-year-old Bristol.

Johnston lived under the same roof with Bristol Palin and her family. Yeah, that couldn’t end well.

See Celebrity Worship blog entry here.

Now the governor’s family is ticked at tacky Levi and his tasteless mother.

“Bristol did not even know Levi was going on the show. We’re disappointed that Levi and his family, in a quest for fame, attention, and fortune, are engaging in flat-out lies, gross exaggeration, and even distortion of their relationship,” a statement from a Palin family representative posted on People.comsays.

“Bristol’s focus will remain on raising Tripp, completing her education, and advocating abstinence,” the statement continues. “It is unfortunate that Levi finds it more appealing to exploit his previous relationship with Bristol than to contribute to the well being of the child.”

Bristol Palin and Johnston broke up earlier this year, just months after Tripp was born.

Cool Queen gets iPod, doesn’t mind being touched by Michelle

Question: What do you give the woman who heads the Commonwealth of Nations and wears the bliggest crown in the world?

Awswer: An iPod.

President Obama gave Queen Elizabeth II the technological wonder during tea Wednesday, April 1.

He or his staff even preloaded the iPod with videos of the royal majesty’s 2007 visit to Virginia, according to London Telegraph.

The Telegraph reports that Obama also gave the Queen a rare songbook signed by Richard Rodgers.

It turns out the Queen is cooler than most women who wear crowns and love corgis. The Queen has a Wii and already had an inferior iPod Mini.

Oh and she wasn’t mad about the whole Michelle Obama putting her arm around her thing.

Seems the Queen didn’t see it as a breach of protocol.

“This was a mutual and spontaneous display of affection and appreciation between The Queen and Michelle Obama,” a Buckingham Palace spokeswoman said according to a Time article posted Thursday, April 2.
