Report: Obesity up in Ohio, state is tenth fattest
Maybe Ohioans should spend a little less time in line for fried Ding Dongs and more time on treadmills.
Ohio is the tenth fattest state in the union in terms of adult obesity, according to the “F as in Fat 2009” study released today, July 1, by the Trust for America’s Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
The state has packed some pounds since last year. The state was in 17th place in 2008.
Ohio might be fat, but it is not the fattest.
That title goes to Mississippi which tops the list for the fifth year running.
It and three other states - West Virginia, Alabama and Tennessee - have adult obesity rates over 30 percent.
Read depressing AP story about it here.
Colorado has just 19 percent of obese adults, the lowest percentage of all states. (Showoffs!)
Overall the nation is looking pretty chunky.
The rate of obese adults increased in 23 states over last year and didn’t drop in one, the study says.
The rate of overweight or obese children is shocking. The obesity rate for kids is 30 percent or greater in 30 states.
Just more than 33 percent of Ohio children are overweight or obese. Nearly 29 percent of adults are obese here. Twenty-seven percent of Ohio adults were obese in 2008.

Why use a treadmill? If we’re all supposed to be more energy efficient wouldn’t walking outside be better for us overall?By Don

I wonder if there’s any connection in the sudden sharp increase with the massive unemployment number in Ohio. We are one of the hardest hit states and have a lot of depressed, unemployed folks getting by on a lot of cheap, processed food. I just think that could partly explain the big increase here.By Chris2

A lot of people eat out of depression and not hunger. People are losing their jobs, homes and any chance of ever living the American Dream anymore. Why not turn to food, or booze or even drugs to try to escape the hurt of losing everything you ever hoped for? This problem is bigger then just good old tasty deep fried Ding Dongs.By real truth

This is something that has been going on for a LONG LONG time. The downturn in the economy and unemployment has nothing to do with it. Look at at all the bars and restaurants around. Look at the area’s alcohol cunsumptions numbers. Look at the way food is prepared, whether your eating in or out.By Jason

Nobody said obesity hasn’t been a problem fro a long time. But Ohio went up (or down?) 7 spots in one year. That’s a big change and suggests there’s more to it than a “continuing problem with obesity.” In the end, the ‘why’ doesn’t matter.By Joan

I would rather people turn to food than alcohol and drugs. Ohio is a falling state. The job rate is down so much and people are depressed. We to be less critisized and helped. What is it going to take for people to realize Ohio is on the brink of destruction!By kelly

What is their means of determining how much of the population is obese? The RWF web site certainly makes no mention of it. So I have to label this garbage science.By Meg

I think we are a very overweight and obese country. It is a product mostly of our lifestyles and society as a whole. What do we do when we want to celebrate something? We go out and eat and have a few drinks. And 90% of the food and drinks add more calories than you need for the entire day in one meal! Also, if you had a survey, many people would say that they would rather stay at home and watch tv over an evening walk. Something has to change!!By Bud Norton

The map accompanying the AP story definitely shows that America is fat in the middle.
