Local grad to appear on Diddy’s new MTV show

A recent graduate of an area university will appear on MTV’s “Making His Band” when it premieres Monday, July 27.

“Wilberforce definitely prepared me for this,” Aston Turner said of appearing on the Sean “Diddy” Combs show.

The Los Angeles area native graduated from Wilberforce University earlier this year with a degree in mass media and communications.

The 28-year-old competed in several Wilberforce and Central State University talent shows while living in the Miami Valley.

The show has musicians compete for the right to back up Combs during his upcoming tour for his new album “Last Train to Paris.”

The elimination show included several music-based challenges and had contestants live together in Los Angeles while.

It is a spin-off of sorts to Combs’ popular “Making The Band” series.

Turner, an R&B, soul and pop vocalist, counts Whitney Houston, Brandy and Faith Evans among her chief influences.

Turner called being on the show a surreal experience.

“I would question ‘Am I really here?’ everyday,” she added.

In defense of mom jeans, Obama: ‘I’m a little frumpy’

President Obama made a startling confession on the heels of Mom Jeans-gate 09, one of the biggest scandals to rock his administration thus far.

“Michelle, she looks fabulous. I’m a little frumpy,” he told Meredith Vieira in a Today Show interview that aired Tuesday, July 21.

Obama was responding to fashionable-types who called the pants he wore to last week’s MLB All-Star Game mom jeans, dad jeans or/and nerd jeans.

Read more here.

Obama spent much of the interview talking about ‘important’ issues like health care, Brazilian custody battles, banking, proposals and budget offices.

He gets to the jeans 13 minutes into the interview.

Is the president wearing ‘mom jeans?’

Obama says up until a few years ago he only had about four suits and his wife use to tease him. He said his jeans are comfortable and he hates to shop.

” For those of you who want your president to look great in his tight jeans, I am sorry I am not the guy,” he said. “It just doesn’t fit me, i am not 20.” What do you think?

Elvis impersonator fights for the right to gyrate on Vegas Strip

And you thought Elvis Presley cleared the way for every man, woman and child to don a jumpsuit and “shake it baby, shake it.”

Well, not everyone and not on the Vegas Strip.

The ACLU is suing Nevada’s Clark County on behalf of musician Suzette Banasik and Elvis the Pelvis impersonator William Jablonski , the Las Vegas Sun reports.

Banasik, Jablonski and other street performers are routinely harassed by the ‘cruel’ coppers when they preform on sidewalks in front of casinos on the Las Vegas Strip, the lawsuit claims according to the newspaper’s report.

The lawsuit is one of a series filed against Vegas and Clark County concerning alleged violations of free speech on the Vegas Strip and the Freemont Street Experience.

‘Drop Dead’ show sparks big, fat controversy

From Laura Houser, Staff Writer

“Drop Dead Diva,” Lifetime’s newest and “biggest” hit this season, has created quite the controversy over body image on TV.

After dying in a car crash, Deb—a ditzy, size-0 supermodel—receives a new outlook on life after she is reincarnated as Jane, a smart but plus-sized attorney.

The lovely Brooke Elliott stars as Jane and provides a refreshing portrayal of an overweight lead character.

The acting and storyline aside, though, the show has received a considerable amount of attention for placing a full-figured woman at the helm.

Actresses such as Paula Abdul, Rosie O’Donnell and Liza Minnelli are lined up to guest star, and everyone from “The New York Times” to feminist blogs (as Rachel Syme of “The Daily Beast” pointed out, the show “screams girl power and body pride”) has been talking about the show since its premiere last Sunday.

Still, some have criticized the show for relying too heavily on stereotypical portrayals of obesity, including scenes featuring Jane salivating over donuts and downing Cheese Whiz in despair.

Others wonder if the show glorifies obesity, while others are championing Elliott as one of the few actresses who actually look like their audience.

Drop Dead Diva airs Sundays at 9 p.m. ET and Mondays at 8 p.m. ET on Lifetime.

What do you think? Does the show promote positive body images, or make a mockery of those it tries to support?
