Are Matchy-Match bridesmaid gowns a thing of the past?

And the bridesmaid dress revolution continues.

I admittedly thought one of my best friends had gone slightly batty when she said we bridesmaids could pick our own dresses as long as the dresses were in her berry color bridal palette - reds, blues, pinks, purples.

That’s right, the dresses don’t have to be the same color, shape, length or style. Not even the fabrics have to match.

It seems my friend was perfectly sane and climbing the trendy ladder fast.

As the bridesmaids’ dresses hinted in “The Sex and the City Movie” (Charlotte wore black, Samantha wore red and Miranda wore blue Zac Posen) and the summer edition of “InStyle Weddings” confirms, one of the latest trends in matrimonial fashion is allowing bridesmaids to pick the color they want wear up to a point. But don’t get too excited ladies.

Chance are slim we will live to see the day where every bride abandoning her lifelong dream of friends in matchy-match dresses.

I guess I was trendy. For my wedding I had my bridesmaid all pick a black dress of there choice. The only criteria was that it had to A-line and tea length. They all ended up looking fabulous. A wedding guest told me it was almost like a fashion show and exciting to see what each bridesmaid had on and my Bridal gown was the finale. I must admit though, I went this route out of mostly laziness (didn’t feel like spending hours looking for dresses for all them and then bug them about sending in measurements and payments) :-) Plus they could all buy a dress that was economical for them. Some of the bridesmaids were single parents or currently unemployed, some had lots of money to burn. So it all worked out wonderfully for me and them.

Getting married in less than two months and every girls’ (there are 6 of them) are each a different color (jewel tones), but they are all same style. It looks beautiful, but of course that is my opinion.

For our wedding two years ago, each bridesmaid picked out her own dress. The only criteria we had was that the dress be red, the same fabric (not hard with all the options we had!), and full length. They also picked their own shoes in silver. Each girl looked comfortable and beautiful in her dress and it was fun seeing them choose.

I can see the point for individuality and costs, etc., but I think I’m too OCD to take this too far. A little variation in how the dresses are made would be ok, depending on what style compliments each girl, but I guess I’m too old-school for different colors. I know I don’t want such different colors and styles as in the Sex and the City movie! I want them all to look like they’re in the same wedding! :)

My maid of honor is NC, one bridesmaid is in TN, one is in KY, and the last one is here in Dayton. So I just told them to go to David’s and get something in Lapis. Once my MOH chose, I let the other girls know of her choice so they could pick complimentary styles. My girls all have different shapes and sizes so I thought it would be nicer to let them pick something flattering and comfortable for their own bodies instead of trying to find a one-style-fits-all dress. They also get to pick their own shoes.

Find and select some good things from you and it helps me to solve a problem, thanks. Henry
