TweetDoes spanking lower IQ?
This will surely ruffle the feathers of parents who spank.
Sparing the rod may do something better than spoiling he child.
Children who are spanked have lower IQ scores than those who are not, according to a study presented last week at the at the International Conference on Violence, Abuse and Trauma in San Diego.
The new study by University of New Hampshire professor Murray Straus found that children who were spanked had IQs 2.8 to 5 points lower than those who were not spanked.
“All parents want smart children. This research shows that avoiding spanking and correcting misbehavior in other ways can help that happen,” Straus says in a press release issued by his university. “The results of this research have major implications for the well being of children across the globe.”
Straus’ study included 806 children ages 2 to 4, and 704 ages 5 to 9.
For starters, Straus reasons that corporal punishment is extremely stressful and can lead to post-traumatic stress symptoms such as “being fearful that terrible things are about to happen and being easily startled.”
But is this hogwash? Do you think there is a link better spanking and IQ or is the professor on to something?

TweetWoman gives birth to 19.2 pound baby
Can someone say ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhrrrrrrrgh?
An Indonesian woman gave birth to a 19.2-pound, 2-foot-long baby boy Monday, Sept. 21, according to AFP.
Visit msnbc.com for Breaking News, World News, and News about the Economy
Proof that there is justice in the universe: the baby was born by Caesarean section.
According to the AFP story, the baby’s super-size is likely due to the fact that his 41-year-old mother has diabetes. The baby may have received way, way too much glucose while in his mother’s womb.
The child doesn’t have a name yet, but his parents may want to consider naming him after Audrey 2 from “Little Shop of Horrors.”
Apparently he is really, really, really into being fed.
“He’s got strong appetite, every minute, it’s almost non-stop feeding,” said Binsar Sitanggang, a doctor who helped deliver the child.
Audrey 3 is the largest baby ever born in Indonesia, but he is not the heaviest child ever born.
According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the world’s heaviest baby was born to Anna Bates, a Canadian woman who lived in Seville, Ohio. That baby was born in 1879 and weighed 23.12 pounds. It died 11 hours after his birth.

TweetOhio woman pregnant with wrong child
Talk about a nightmare situation.
An Ohio couple is preparing to deliver another couple’s child, they said Monday, Sept. 21, in an interview with TODAY’s Meredith Vieira.
The wrong embryos were accidentally implanted in Carolyn Savage through in vitro fertilization.
Visit msnbc.com for Breaking News, World News, and News about the Economy
The 40-year-old Sylvania resident and her husband, Sean, had two choices: terminate the pregnancy or carry the fetus full-term and then turn the child over to his biological parents.
Due to their religious beliefs, the parents of three decided to carry the baby.
Carolyn Savage is now 35 weeks pregnant and could have the baby as early as next week.
“We want a moment to say hello and goodbye,” Savage said in the Today Show interview. “That will be hard.”
Savage, who has had trouble conceiving, can not get pregnant again due to medical issues.
She and her husband will work with a surrogate mother.
“We felt strongly that we needed to give every embryo that we created a chance at life,” Savage said.
The Savages said the child’s biological parents will decide if he knows anything about what happened.
“We know that they did not ask for this,” Carolyn Savage said. ” We are not going to impress ourselves into their lives. Of course we will wonder about this child every day for the rest of our lives and we have hopes for him, but they are his parents.”

TweetAnchor drops f-bomb on live TV
There are things appropriate to say about a chicken on TV news and things that should be left unsaid.
We’re betting “keep (f-bombing) that chicken” falls in the ‘keep it unsaid’ category.
That’s the F-bomb New York anchor Ernie Anastos dropped during a broadcast Wednesday, Sept. 17, on FOX5 WNYW
Anastos made the rather odd statement during an exchange with weatherman Nick Gregory, according to the New York Post.
He’s not the first anchor to make an oopsie on TV.
Note: they may be funny, but they are not PG.

Umm…the commission of a crime is not the time to check a friend’s Facebook status.
A West Virginia burglary suspect was nabbed after he checked his account on the social networking site using his alleged victim’s computer, Martinsburg’s The Journal reported Wednesday, Sept. 16.
Jonathan G. Parker, 19, of Fort Loudoun, Pa., logged into his account, but oops, forgot to log out before leaving the home with two diamond rings in August, according to court record obtained by the newspaper.
If convicted, Paker could be sentenced to up to 10 years in prison.

TweetDayton native shines at Fashion Week
Dayton native Scott Sternberg continued a long string of successes this week with his Spring/Summer collection unveiled during Fashion Week. Sternberg’s Los Angeles-based labels were shown Saturday, Sept. 12.
See gallery of Fashion Week photos here
The New York Times praised the boat shoes that Sternberg, the son of Marc and Maureen Sternberg of Kettering, included with his men’s collection, Band of Outsiders.
Boy, his women’s brand, “had some clever ideas for spring as well, like an Herve Leger-style bandage skirt made of green-and-blue-striped suspenders,” the newspaper said.
The Wall Street Journal said Boy “seem inspired by how the cool kids in prep school wore their clothes, preppy attired a little more affected than the straight arrows.”
The Los Angeles Times called Band of Outsiders a “sunny, preppy at play collection” inspired by “Malibu circa 1978, Jacques Cousteau’s ‘The Silent World,’ and Dennis Wilson’s ‘Pacific Ocean Blue.’”

TweetEarth’s revenge: Climate change goes after beer
Here’s a reason to worry about the environment: it seems climate change has one of nature’s most beloved creations in its sights and we aren’t talking about the polar bears this time.
According to GAWKER.com and New Scientist magazine, a Czech climatologist and his colleagues believe that beer may be in peril.
Slight overstatement, but Martin Mozny thinks that the flavor-giving acidity of Saaz hops, which are used to make several pilsners, has declined in recent years due to increased air temperature brought on by climate change.
Hop-growing regions of Germany and Slovakia are also in danger, according to an European Commission crop expert quoted in the New Scientist article.

Tweet‘Backseat’ driving cat causes crash
A cat is blamed for a crash even though he or she doesn’t have opposable thumbs.
A Maine woman blamed a cat in her backseat for a crash that saw her car smack into an utility pole Tuesday, Sept. 8
The Lewiston woman told police she became distracted feeding the cat when the crash happened, the Sun Journal in Lewiston said.
Liked any good cat burglar, the cat disappeared after the crash.
New rule: don’t feed a cat while driving.
Incidentally, a new law is set to take effect in Maine this weekend that could see distracted driver fined for accidents.
What do you think? Should distracted drivers be fined here?

TweetPamela Anderson’s latest PETA ad banned by CNN
Pamela Anderson gets passengers down to the basics in the new (and how could it not be) risque PETA ad “Cruelty Doesn’t Fly.”
‘Cruelty Doesn’t Fly’—Learn More at PETA.org.
The video doesn’t show anything we haven’t seen on “NYPD Blues,” but according to the New York Post, CNN has refused to show it on its Airport Network.
The news network rejected the ad, saying it might not be suitable for children, the Post says.
Anderson plays a naughty airport security guard. She screens and generally abuses characters played by Carol Leifer, Steve-O, Andy Dick and Nina Hagen.
Passengers are stripped of leather, fur and other animal products.
Watch the video and judge for yourself. Be warned, there is a brief shot of two well-chiseled backsides. Don’t worry, neither belongs to Dennis Franz.

TweetWhat did you think of Chris Brown’s bow tie?
R&B singer Chris Brown appeared Wednesday, Sept. 2, on “Larry King Live” to discuss his legal woes, but the information super highway is still buzzing about the baby blue bow tie and matching sweater he wore to the interview.
(Watch the interview below.)
Some folks say he looked like a fool. Others thought the pop princess pounder looked ‘cute.’
(Gag!)
Brown was recently sentenced to five years probation and community labor on a felony assault charge for an assault on then girlfriend Rihanna.
The 20-year-old batted the singer around the inside of a car in February, leaving her bleeding and bruised.
To the chagrin of many, Brown’s outfit has been the talk of the cyber-town every since clips of the King interview were released earlier this week.
Really, who wants to tackle a critically important thing like teen domestic violence when you can go on and on about a stupid bow tie right?
