A woman with one of the most recognizable faces from the 1970s will speak 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 6, at the University of Dayton’s Kennedy Union Ballroom.

Controversial political activist and history of consciousness professor Angela Davis will be the keynote speaker at the Annual Richard R. Baker Philosophy Colloquium hosted by the university’s philosophy department and The Concerned Philosophers for Peace.

The speech is free and open to the public.

Davis first gained national attention when then California Gov. Ronald Reagan removed her from a teaching post at the University of California-Berkley.

The feminist activist associated with the Black Panthers black power organization gained worldwide attention after being accused in the 1970 abduction and murder of Judge Harold Haley in Marin County, California.

Her arrest sparked the international “Free Angela Davis” campaign.

She was found innocent and has since rallied against racial injustice and been an advocate of abolition of the “prison-industrial complex.”

An author, Davis ran twice in the 1980s as vice president on the Communist ticket. She is reportedly no longer a member of the Communist Party.

She probably is advising the Obama administration, like all the other communist advisers he has. Why give these radicals more publicity, unless you are sympathetic to their ideas? Get rid of prisons?? What would we do with the prisoners? Oh yeah, forgot, you don’t have to have a solution, just a loud mouth!

Unbelievable: You are unbelievable. You are afraid of anyone that doesn’t think or look like you. Free your mind to listen to other points of view.

Kathy, keep smoking dope to free your mind. She is a radical and shouldn’t be rewarded.

Yep, let’s put everything on Obama. What idiots in this town!!! Not everything is communist in this world. Angela Davis is her own kind of radical—-just like UNBELIEVABLE is his own kind of ignorant fool.

Judi, everything in this world may not be communist but, Angela Davis is! Think she’ll tell her audience that communism is the most evil system the world has ever seen. It’s responsible for about 8 to 10 times the carnage of Nazism.

Freaky lady: That’s sounds about right for your name. All I am saying if you don’t agree with someone FINE. Everyone has a right to their own opinions. And my bet is that you or Unbelievable have no clue what her position is these days.

The strength of our country is when we allow people to give free speech that we disagreed with the most… in that regard the United States has never been stronger. Never take freedom of speech for granted whether it is Fox News or Angela Davis.

This woman is a highly respected Professor speaking at an academic conference hosted by UD. If you were secure in your own beliefs, it would be easy to embrace and respect ideas that were not your own without believing in them yourself. You would welcome it and rejoice that there were free thinkers in this world. The people of Dayton could not have always been like this, or else we would have never learned to fly. PS: she is a lesbian too - get your pitchforks!

Angela Davis broke from the Communist Party to help form the Committees of Correspondence for Democracy and Socialism. According to the organization’s website, she’s on their Advisory Board. She might not be a communist, but she’s a socialist.

@ irishguy, you know what accounts for 8-10 times the amount of carnage created by communism? That’s right, the catholic church. And that’s just the start of it, give the other religions some time to catch up.

Once a communist, always a communist.

Makes perfect sense and is a good fit. President Obama (an avowed Marxist) is recognized by a Catholic university, namely Notre Dame. Angela Davis (an avowed Marxist, now democratic socialist)is given a place behind a lectern at another Catholic university. What’s up with being Catholic these days?

Oh,I almost forgot. Ms. Davis also is an aquitted murderer. She was found not guilty of murder in the August 1970 abduction and killing of Judge Harold Haley in Marin County, California. She’s definitely someone worth listening to, HUMMMMMMMMMMMMM!

Hey Kathy, the democrats, sociallists, and communists like you are always preaching about being so open to other points of view, however when someone else espouses one, you immediately attack them! Thats a roit! So much for openness huh? Live by what you preach, then I’ll consider your view point!
