Is Dick Cheney right? Should gay military ban be lifted?
Fighting with Vice President Joe Biden was only one of thing things Dick Cheney did during his “This Week” interview Sunday, Feb. 14, with ABC’s Jonathan Karl.
The former vice president also said he thought the military’s controversial “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy will and should end.
“I think society has moved on,” Cheney said when asked if the policy that prevents gays and lesbians from serving openly in the military should be scrapped.
The father of an openly gay daughter said he thought the issue was a “generational question.”
“Twenty years ago the military was a strong advocate of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell when I was the Secretary of Defense. I think things have changed significantly since then, he said. “My guess is the that the policy will be changed.”
Is Cheney right. Has society moved on? Should the ban be lifted?

Yes. This may be the first time I’ve agreed with Mr. Cheney, and it may well be the last.

Dick’s daughter probably read him the riot act. He’s the kind of guy you have to hit with a 2x4 first, to get his attention.

Cheney is right. When the Chiefs of Staff for the Army, Airforce, Navy & USMC signal time is at hand to repeal the law which prohibits servicemembers from engaging in homosexual activities, Congress should move ahead with the repeal.

The Law should have never been in place to start with but Dick Cheney is a joke - he never served in the military + he eluded the draft 7 times with help of powerful money even after flunking out of Harvard U .

It seems like Dick has been more vocal since he left the office… I am not a big fan of his; However, I do agree this should be lifted. If you are going to be honorable and fight for this country the least we can do is be supportive!

No. Very frequently, during deployments and even at home, servicemembers must use showers and latrines with little or no privacy. Many heterosexuals would not like or maybe even tolerate being forced to be exposed to homosexuals in such a manner. Or if civilian social correctness is to be forced on the military, should all sleeping quarters, showers, etc not be segregated by sex, i.e. men and women are forced to use the same facilities? How would the vast majority of females feel about having to shower and share sleeping quarters and bathrooms and showers with the men they work with? That would remove any sexual discrimination also, but would it be practical or accepted by the service members or their wives, husbands, boyfriends, girlfriends or parents? Currently, service members deployed to Afghanistan are forbidden to enter sleeping quarters of the opposite sex. Sexual relationships are strictly forbidden. How should that be handled in such a way that both straight and gays have equal restrictions or liberties? As a recently retired officer with 24+ years service, I don’t think that the vast majority of civilians who support having homosexuals openly serve in the military have any idea of the multitude of practical, day-to-day problems that would be encountered. The military is NOT a mirror of the civilian world.

It sounds like ‘null’ at 11:20AM is a bit too preoccupied with a gay person getting a look at his teeny peeny. Dude, get OVER yourself. Gay men aren’t into straight dudes. Get a grip. Your reasoning has all of the merits of the argument of a third grader. I have served for over a decade. There are gay men that serve with me. And they are the BEST among us, not the worst, my friend. You need to look to God for healing…

“null”, maybe if someone is so afraid of serving in the military next to a homosexual, then they shouldn’t be going over seas in the first place. If you be a big transition, and maybe it would make some people uncomfortable, but it’s a step in the right direction. Some people are still uncomfortable with black people, should that keep them from serving? No. And whether it will make them uncomfortable or not, it’s the right thing to do.

John C - if you want to get rid of perverts, you better look at the straight folks. You too must be afraid someone will see your tiny wanker.

Now let me understand….it must accepted because why? what is right is right….there are no males or females in the animal kingdom that have SEX with each other..maybe we can LEARN from them…. who would want an alcholic to be bartender or petafileto be in daycare….or men that get aroused by seeing other men in the SHOWER this is no rocket science… but common sense…….WAKE UP AMERICA>>>>

It seems that anyone who disagrees with the gay military ban being lifted is pointed out to be “afraid” of one thing or another. How is that when someone disagrees with any discussion on gays, that they are automatically marked as a bad person? Do the laws throughout this country give gays the same rights as everyone else? I don’t think so. This must mean that the majority of people dislike gays and their thinking. So why should I have to agree to everything that the gays want? We all have our own beliefs and moral backgrounds.

taxpayer, boy did you show your ignorance, and you’re sitting in front of a computer. If you put in homosexuality in the animal kingdom there will be more than enough evidence to discredit your hollow, shallow, unintelligent comment.

Dick Cheney is ‘dead wrong’ on this and many other issues. Homosexuality is immorality and shouldn’t be allowed in the military. DADT is actually not strong enough but I think the best thing is to keep the policy in place.

scguy, you are entitled to your opinions, but realize that you are considered immoral by those judging you by standards you don’t believe in. Does this make you immoral ?? As far as homosexuality not belonging in the military, this law does not stop homosexuals from serving, we are already there. There will be no difference except that gay people can now freely talk about thier families, lovers, and lives just as everyone else does. WAKE UP.

And they also stoned adulterers; if someone had a physical malformation or was mentally deficient they were demon possessed. WOW weren’t we enlightened then, about as enlightened as you are.
