Government workers glamorous in movies, UD research says
Talking about being hot for teacher, and police officer, and astronaut, and librarians …
While the stereotype is that government and civil servants are lazy, incompetent and dangerous, the camera sure does love them.
Research by University of Dayton professor Michelle Pautz and Laura Roselle from Elon University shows that government workers are most often described as good-looking, knowledgeable, well-trained and efficient in films.
“Are they ready for their close-up? Civil servants and their portrayal in contemporary American cinema” is published in the current issue of Public Voices.
The political scientists and their students examined the top ten grossing films of the year from 1992 to 2006, including Harry Potter, Star Wars, Austin Powers and Finding Nemo.
“The overall views of government were negative, but the individual actors were all good — there’s a disconnect there, and I think that’s fascinating,” Pautz said in a press release. “It would seem to parallel the experience of most Americans, who on the surface think government is bad but actually find their day-to-day interactions with government to be positive.”
It of course all depended on what sort of government worker the actor played and if he or she was a bureaucrat.
Sixty eight percent of CIA officials appeared in films that depict government negatively while 67 percent of teachers and 100 percent of astronauts were in films with a positively depicting government, the press release said.
What do you think? Are government workers generally hot tamales?

Chick-lit pioneer at the Greene tonight
Chick-lit pioneer Jane Green will discuss her new book, “Promises to Keep” (Viking, $25.95), at 7 p.m. today, July 7, at Books & Co. at The Greene, 4453 Walnut St., Beavercreek.
In the recipe-packed book, Green tells the story of a friendship impacted by cancer. Best known for her books “Jemina J.,” “Mr. Maybe” and “Bookends,” Green, when writing the latest book, channeled the experience of watching one of her best friends die.
Green says her friend wanted her to write about the experience.
As a preview, we asked her a few questions:
Q - What is the best lesson you’ve learned that could help a new author?
A - Don’t let rejection put you off, don’t give your book to everyone you know seeking validation, and do write what you know. Tell your story, the story that feels true for you, rather than what you think will sell, and write from your heart.
Q - How did your friend’s breast cancer change you?
A - I learned how to be a better friend. I learned not to take people for granted, and that love is a verb, that loving someone requires Acts. Of. Love. It is all about the doing, and what you can do for those you love.
Q -What is your favorite character from one of your books?
A - Too many to name, but I will always love Jemima J. for her sweetness, and I will admit to having a soft spot for Steffi in Promises to Keep. I love her journey from hip city chick to country girl, and how she finds peace amongst the chickens.
Q - What advice can you share about humorous writing?
A - Sadly not much, for I never think of myself as a humorous writer, rather that the humour comes from the recognition. I am a social observer, and write about the truths of life as I see them, and I think there is humor in recognising yourself in the characters.
Q - - What is the future of chick lit?
A - It continues to morph and change as we writers continue to morph and change. I haven’t written true chick lit for some years, but YA - Young Adult - seems to have taken its place, and good women’s commercial fiction continues to sell, particularly when there is a romantic angle - who, after all, doesn’t need a little romance in their lives?

A page at NBC in Los Angeles, Rough was punked by actor Jeremy Piven during a recent episode of “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.”
Piven, who once got mercury poising from fish, pretended to explode on discovering sushi in his dressing room.

“But don’t out act me because you will be punished,” Piven said.
The clip of the confrontation also appeared on “The View.”
Reached by phone, Rough, 24, called the whole thing surreal.
Everyone was in on the joke except him it seemed.
“I am finding more and more people who knew about it,” he said, noting that its been a wild ride. “It was a great experience once the (prank was revealed). I like to enjoy a good prank as much as the next person.”
He said he doesn’t know if he actually land on “Entourage”, one of his favorite shows.

Is federal tanning tax fair?
Achieving that golden glow just got 10 percent more expensive.
The controversial 10 percent tax on recipients of tanning services takes effect today, Thursday, July 1.
Federal officials say the initiative is expected to raise $2.7 billion in ten years to help pay for the $940 billion health care overhaul.
Tanning salon owners have another opinion.
The Indoor Tanning Association says it will “unfairly hit working women and college students who comprise the majority of indoor tanning consumers.”
Officials say tanning salon use has been linked to the deadliest form of skin cancer.
“People should avoid tanning bed, period end of sentence,” said Peter Osborne, a spokesman for the American Cancer Society of Northwest and Southwest Ohio.
What do you think? Is the tax on tanning fair or foul?
