Dayton team to be featured on Science Channel’s “Punkin, Chunkin”
Dayton’s American Chunker will be showcased Thanksgiving night on the Science Channel during the broadcast of the 25th annual World Championship Punkin’ Chunkin’ Competition held earlier this month in Delaware.
“Punkin, Chunkin” airs at 8 p.m. Thursday.
The team made of friends and coworkers from Wright Patterson Air Force Base placed third in their division, trebuchet.
Dayton Team ETHOS (Experimental Torsion Hybrid Onager System) placed sixth in the competed in the torsion division.
American Chunker uses gravity to throw their pumpkins.
“It’s the kind of machine you would have to have used in the middle ages,” team member Steve Beyer of Beavercreek said before leaving for this years’ competition.
The team sponsored by Southern Recipe pork rinds placed second in last year’s competition, their first time in the competing.
Formed six years ago, American Chunker is establishing an Endowment through the Greene County Community Foundation. It will provide scholarships to high school students interested in science and technology.
Foundation Director Ed Marrinan said American Chunker wants to get young people excited about math, engineering and related areas of study.
“Learning this type of stuff can be fun,” he said.

TweetBellbrook restaurant’s creation named ‘Most Delightful Dessert’
It was a battle royale with sugar, flour and lots of butter at Carillion Historical Park Sunday.
Eight area restaurants and caters competed in Dayton History’s Most Delightful Dessert Contest as part of its 16th annual Ring in the Holidays celebration.
The coveted People’s Choice award went to Amelia’s Bistro’s in Bellbrook for its rich Triple Chocolate Decadence Cheesecake.
A three judge panel including 99.9 Lite FM morning show host Paul Ellis, WDTN’s Jim Bucher and I favored Dayton Marriott’s Traditional Bread Pudding with Whiskey Sauce awarding it the Critic Choice Award.
Citilites in Downtown Dayton won top honors in the best presentation category.
