Tweet64-year-old local college professor plans to smash one-arm push-up record
Matt McCormick has something to prove.
The 64-year-old Wright State University and Sinclair Community College martial arts professor is out to dispel the notion that older athletes are less physically fit than their younger peers.
And he’s planning to do it one one-arm push-up at a time.
McCormick will try to break the record of 143 one-arm push-ups in a minute set by 29-year-old Jeremiah Gould 6 p.m. Saturday in the town square of the Greene in Beavercreek.
Gould’s 2009 record has been retired so McCormick says his won’t be an official Guinness World Record attempt.
That doesn’t dissuade the Beavercreek resident who will be judged by Jack Giambrone, Sinclair’s athletic director, and Kathleen Querner, a Sinclair physical education professors.
A lifelong fitness buff, McCormick did 145 push-ups in a minute during a practice session.
“I am pretty confident I am going to do it,” said McCormick, also a tai-chi and yoga teacher. “What I really want to do is knock the hell out of the record. 60 is the new 40 and I am kind of representative of that.”
